Scam prevention seminars

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL

The Town of Oyster Bay and the Nassau County District Attorney's office are partnering to host a series of educational seminars this fall. The initiative aims to equip seniors and their caregivers with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognize, report, and combat fraudulent schemes. Senior citizens, often targeted due to their limited familiarity with modern technology and scam tactics, face heightened risks of manipulation. Factors such as loneliness and medication-related vulnerabilities can exacerbate their susceptibility. The seminars will cover a range of topics including: • Common scam tactics and how to identify them • Steps to take if you suspect a scam • Practical strategies for safeguarding personal information • Resources for reporting fraudulent activities These informative sessions will be held at community centers throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, ensuring easy access for residents. The fall schedule includes: See page 12

Mad for Chicken, a new restaurant and bar in Plainview, recently hosted the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce’s monthly meeting. Owner Mike Choy, a Woodbury resident, welcomed over 50 Chamber members on a warm summer evening, serving appetizers and discussing his journey into entrepreneurship. Choy explained that despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his wife were determined to open a community-focused restaurant in Long Island. After a year of searching, they found the perfect location on Washington Avenue. Choy, a former financial services executive in New York City, said he saw the pandemic as an opportunity to invest in the local community. “I come from the corporate world of financial services, banking, management consulting and more. It was during the pandemic, when all the restaurants were shut down or takeout-only, that my wife and I considered that the community would be ‘coming back’ at a near point in the future. We love the communities of Syosset, Woodbury, Plainview, Jericho and Bethpage and we wanted to invest in this area. We wanted to have a place in the community that’s a little bit different and we ended up finding this location. Though the space needed a gut renovation, we invested here and figured out decor and ambiance to add a nice vibe to the area,” Choy explained. Choy’s career included roles at Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, and Wells Fargo, where he served as CFO and COO for technology and operations. He believes his business management background translates well to running a restaurant. “My career background is in business management but 95% of running a successful restaurant will be about the same things – it’s what you can’t see, what’s behind the scenes and all that we put into the establishment. It starts with financial management and HR, and that is second nature to me as it’s what I started with at the big banking and financial companies. This is an approach I am bringing to our local business and I plan on walking the walk. Here, it will be more tangible to make a See page 11
