In another matter, the Board voted to appoint Ingerman Smith LLP to serve as attorney for the Jericho School District for the 2023– 2024 school year, over the objection of Board member Perlman that the district issue an RFP to consider other law firms to represent the district. See page 12
On Thursday, July 6 the Syosset Central School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting in the South Woods Middle School auditorium. By receiving a nomination and 5 supporting votes, Carol Cheng, who has served on Syosset’s Board of Education since July of 2017, earned the nod over the 2022-23 Board of Education President Tom Rotolo to serve as the Syosset School Board President this year. Following the oath of office administered by District Clerk Francine Benjamin, Cheng took her seat to lead the rest of the July 6 meeting.
In her welcoming remarks as new Board of Education president, Cheng stated “I want to thank everyone for entrusting me in this position. It is a great honor and I look forward to working with everyone. This is a great team, and we have a lot of great work to look forward to.” Carol Cheng made history six years ago as Syosset’s first Asian American resident to run for the Board. Now, she is the first Asian American president of the Syosset Central School District BOE. BY RIKKI MASSAND During the Town of Oyster Bay Board meeting on June 27, the Board approved a resolution for a Local Law concerning drivers’ failure to stop for school buses. The resolution amended the Oyster Bay Town Code by adding Chapter 116, in accordance with Section 1174-A of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, “governing drivers who illegal-
ly overtake or pass a school bus that has been stopped to receive or discharge passengers,” Town Clerk Richard LaMarca explained. A public hearing on the new Local Law was held at the Town Board May 9 meeting.
