Volunteers clean town waterways Jericho man sentenced in fatal DWI crash

A Jericho man has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for a DWI collision on Jericho Turnpike that killed a 29-yearold father of four in March 2022. According to Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, Jordan Solomon, 32, pleaded guilty before Judge Caryn Fink on March 20, 2023, to Aggravated Vehicular Homicide (a B felony); Assault in the Second Degree (a D felony); and Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (an unclassified misdemeanor).

Students from Bethpage High School visited Tappen Marina in Glenwood Landing to assist the Town of Oyster Bay in cleaning and monitoring the Collec’Thor equipment, which helps keep waterways clean throughout the season with the assistance of volunteers. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Environmental Resources has returned the floating litter trap technology, known as the ‘Collec’Thor,’ to Tappen Marina. Provided to the Town by the Suffolk County Cornell Cooperative Extension last summer through a grant from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund, the Collec’Thor is a silent, motorized waste collector which attracts and engulfs all solid or liquid waste floating on the water

surface. “This innovative technology helps protect our environment and strengthens the ecosystem by removing debris from the water,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I thank all of the local environmental organizations who assisted the Town in implementing this environmental technology, which collects up to 220 pounds of floating debris in just one cycle. Through partnership with Cornell Coop-

erative Extension, Friends of the Bay, The Waterfront Center and the Oyster Bay/ Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, we are continuing to work together to improve the quality of our waterways and protect our environment.” As the Collec’Thor returned to the waterways this spring, students from Bethpage High School visited to take part in marine debris See page 11

Solomon was sentenced to 6-1/2 to 15 years in prison. The NCDA recommended a sentence of 7 to 21 years in prison. The District Attorney said, "Jordan Solomon, out celebrating a new job at a local restaurant, made the decision to get behind the wheel of his car at nearly three times the legal limit for alcohol and speed down Jericho Turnpike. That disastrous choice resulted in a crash that cost Stanley Soobrian his life See page 11

This award recognizes outstanding teachers dedicated to providing education with an enhanced purpose. Jericho High School senior Kevin Zhu was named a Coca-Cola Scholar, one of only 150 students who are creating positive change in their communities and around the world. He received $20,000 for this recognition. After being named a scholar, the students then have the opportunity to nominate a teacher, coach, principal or counselor that inspired and encouraged them

most as their Educator of Distinction. Kevin nominated Mr. Deaner, his guidance counselor, and he was named a winner!
