RIDE TO END CANCER
BY GEORGE HABER
Town of Oyster Bay officials recently announced a partnership between the town and Empire State Ride Long Island to host Long Island's largest charitable fundraiser to benefit cancer research.
Volunteers needed to help terrapin turtles
The Town of Oyster Bay and Friends of the Bay will be co-hosting a Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Centre Island Beach. “The Town of Oyster Bay joined forces with Friends of the Bay to launch ‘Team Terrapin,’ to help protect the Diamondback Terrapin
turtle, as this small species lives in fresh or brackish waters in our Town,” said Town Councilwoman Laura Maier. “These turtles, which have distinctive diamond-shaped rings covering their shells, have a near-threatened conservation status and we are working with our environmental partners and local volunteers to help protect this vul-
nerable species.” During this Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day, volunteers will be trained to identify signs of nesting terrapins, briefed on how to collect data and how to deploy protective cages around nests. These structures keep natural predators like raccoons and fox away from See page 10

More than 350 Jericho residents have signed a petition to prevent Jericho school teachers from actively supporting and funding candidates for School Board elections. The petition on the website Change.org was launched by Jericho resident Cherilyn Weiss, whose two children attend Jericho schools. “It’s an obvious and blatantly conflict of interest for Jericho teachers through their union to endorse a candidate for the school board,” she said. “Of course, teachers have a right to support candidates of their choice,” she said. “But when a united front is formed to finance a campaign and to sway parents of school children to vote a certain way, that is an obvious abuse of the teachers’ position.” Weiss said teachers were making phone calls to parents and knocking on doors to enlist support for specific candidates. “When school boards vote on teacher contracts or discuss issues involving teachers, it is inappropriate for the teachers’ choices to be board members with obvious vested interest in these issues,” Weiss said. Weiss said the School Administration sees no problem with teachers supporting specific Board candidates, and one education lawyer contacted by the News Journal said he saw no legal basis for preventing teachers or their unions from taking sides in school board elections. Weiss said she recognizes everyone’s right to free speech, but “to keep elections and board decisions fair,” she said, “board members elected with the backing of aggressive and coordinated support from teachers should have the sensitivity” to recuse themselves from decisions affecting teachers such as salary negotiations and certain issues involving teachers. The petition will be submitted to New York State agencies that oversee School Board activities.
