RALLY FOR THE HOSTAGES
Perlman, Vartanov seek second term on BOE BY GEORGE HABER
On April 7, New York State Senator Steve Rhoads rallied with Run for Their Lives and over 1,000 Long Islanders at the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center in Plainview calling for the safe and immediate return of the Israeli hostages taken by Hamas in the October 7 terror attacks. The rally marked exactly 6 months since the October 7th attack and was a powerful testament to the enduring bonds of solidarity and support that transcend geographical boundaries, as the participants stood in unwavering support of the hostages and their loved ones.

Throughout his first term on the Jericho School Board Board of Trustees, Sam Perlman has been a persistent skeptic of the District’s policies, procedures, and occasionally, personnel. “My motivation has always been to make the District’s actions as transparent and rational as they can be ,” said Perlman, a former hedge fund manager who is a CPA and BS in Finance from the Wharton School. “Too often,” he said in an interview with the News Journal, “the School Board has become a rubber stamp for policies and recommendations from the Administration or the Board's advisors. There’s very little questioning or discussion from Board members. I don’t think that's the kind of oversight the Jericho community expects and deserves from its School Board.” Jennifer Vartanov, a principal in a national merchant services com-
pany, often sides with Perlman in questioning Administration policies. “I see my role as being one of representing parents and residents, and of course the students, who may not follow all the developments in the District, but who are very concerned about them.” In her first term as a Board trustee, Vartanov said, “I led initiatives to implement major security upgrades and I worked to establish a residency recertification process to uphold the integrity of the District.” Addressing his critics, Perlman said, “Some District personnel, and even Board members, have vigorously objected to my occasional opposition to their positions or perspectives. “But constructive criticism is not simply negativity for its own sake. With three children attending Jericho schools, I see myself, on occasion, as being a member of what the British call 'the loyal opposition’.” The School Board election is on Tuesday, May 21.
