EAB meeting to address preserving village trees

Garden City’s Environmental Advisory Board (“EAB”) invites all residents to join its meeting on Wednesday evening, September 21st at 7:30 p.m., at Village Hall or by Zoom to learn more about the challenges of preserving the trees in our Village and how we

At its September 13th work session, the Garden City Board of Education met with key members of the district to debrief the community on the effectiveness of its in-person and online 2022 summer programs. “Summer was a very busy time for the Garden City schools,” Dr. Kusum Sinha, Superintendent of Schools, began before introducing Lauren Kaufman, director of literacy, who provided an overview the reading support program’s initial objectives and results. For added context, the program was funded by Garden City’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation and was developed to strengthen and accelerate the literacy skills of students who received academic support in the 2021/2022 school year. Post-program assessments proved growth among participants and progress reports were shared with classroom teachers to help them more intentionally plan instruction for the next year. Teachers shared that they felt supported throughout the process while students and their families shared their excitement about the skills they learned. “You say there was progress, which I find phenomenal. What was the secret formula there?”

asked Board Vice President Tom Pinou. Kaufman explained how she and her team believed that there needed to be a way for students to pick their learning style to be worked into the program. And so they did. That thinking likely led to increased engagement as now students were able to play some sort of a role in their own learning. “You just hit on it. The children had a choice and a voice,” Pinou added. “I love that.” Dr. Edward Cannone, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, then detailed the results of the iReady online program. He highlighted the digital, self-paced functionality of this program, which served as a more flexible summer learning option that accommodates families’ less standardized summer schedules. The program had 331 active participants. He also shared that student success directly correlated with the number of hours they put in. The adaptive program challenged students more and more as they spent more time and rose in skill level. Much of the success of the program was credited to instructor office hours, on-demand access to diagnostic performance data for families and teachers See page 48
