Rotary legacy gives children with disabilities a place to thrive BY VIJAY THILLAINATHAN At the Floral Park-Bellerose Rotary Club’s May 12 dinner meeting, Patrick Barry of the Patchogue Rotary Club shared stories about Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck that stayed with many of us long after the evening ended. The camp, located on 37 scenic acres along Kaler’s Pond in Center Moriches, has deep Rotary roots. It grew out of an effort by the Rotary
Club of the Moriches to give children affected by polio the chance to enjoy a real summer camp experience. The first campers arrived in 1948. Nearly eight decades later, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck continues that mission, serving children and adults with a wide range of disabilities through overnight camp, day programs, recreation, and respite for families. Barry spoke about one camper
in particular: the sister of a fellow Rotarian, who was born with spina bifida and was not expected to live past her teenage years. She began attending Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck as a child. She went on to live to age 50, marry, graduate from law school, raise a family, and build a full life. Barry said the camp helped her focus on what was possible, not on what others thought she could See page 3
