Six Bethpage students receive science grant award BY GARY SIMEONE Six students from Bethpage High School were the recipients of a prestigious science research award. The students were part of four science research projects, which garnered the SAAWA (South Asian American Womens Alliance) mini research grant award in the district. and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces, along with children in children’s hospitals. Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe will oversee their distribution and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino also honored the Big Hy for Heroes

Organization. Founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman with the help of his son Arthur Strachman, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today.

had partnered with the SAAWA organization and had applied for the grant. “The students projects were recognized as four out of sixteen grants that were awarded to student groups throughout Long Island,” said Dulaney. “We are very proud of our students here at Bethpage for achieving this great honor.” Riya Saha, a junior, was part of a three-member group who was recognized for their project, which focused on assembling a See page 10

Arrest in overdose case

Nassau County Police arrested a Freeport man during the investigation of an overdose that occurred on Thursday, December 8, in Bethpage. According to Narcotics/Vice Squad detectives, an investigation into a fatal overdose of a Nassau County resident led to the arrest of Nicholas S. Leroy, 30. See page 16
