Levittown Chamber celebrates holidays, collects toys
Town cautions of scam donation bins
The Town of Oyster Bay has cautioned residents who leave donations in collection bins to make sure the organizations behind those bins have good intentions. Particularly during the holiday season, Town officials have witnessed a proliferation in illegally-placed bins asking residents to drop off clothing or toy donations. Many of these structures appear to be homemade, contain stencil lettering and no sign of legitimacy.
“With the holiday season upon us, many people are looking for ways to help others, especially during this pandemic,” said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Unfortunately this time of year is also when we begin to see this particular type of scam. We want to make sure our residents are vigilant when it comes to making donations, and to be sure they are contributing to a legitimate, well-intentioned organization.”

Vermont’s Major Ski Resorts Prepare for Strong Season BY KAREN RUBIN TRAVEL FEATURES SYNDICATE GOINGPLACESFARANDNEAR.COM Skiing – and generally being outdoors – is still the best way to enjoy winter getaways this season. The best improvements to the guest experience made last year at Ski Vermont destinations are in place for this year – touchless ticketing, food and beverage choices, making outdoor spaces more comfortable with fire pits, wind screens. Visitors are encouraged to “know before you go” to check on policies and whether tickets and ski rentals need to be pre-purchased or reserved in advance, especially with the situation so changeable (see Skivermont. com/know-before-you-go for updates throughout the season). Three of Vermont’s major ski resorts – Mount Snow, Okemo and Stowe - are now part of Vail Resorts, which means they are also part of the Epic Pass and the Epic Local Pass is a great choice for those who want to mainly visit their “home” resort - much more affordable than a traditional, single-mountain season pass plus it also grants access to other great resorts across the region. (Details: https://www.epicpass.com/ passes/epic-local-pass.aspx). Three of Vermont’s majors are part of Alterra Mountain Company or partners with its IKON pass (Killington/Pico, Stratton and Sugarbush, see https://www.ikonpass.com/en/shop-passes/ikonpass) which also gives skiers that much more flexibility and diversity.

Storm Damaged Trees BY JEFF RUGG
Question: The recent storm winds blew lots of small dead branches off my soft maple. Should the tree be pruned? I did not think the tree was dying, but now I am wondering how healthy it is. Answer: Silver maples, honey locusts and many other trees will lose a lot of small branches during a storm. Mostly these are the small interior branches that stopped getting enough sunlight over the years and the tree cut them off from access to the sap. Their death is a normal part of the life of a tree. Many stay on the tree for several years until a storm blows them off. If any of the branches were bigger than an inch or so in diameter, it would be good to have the stubs that were left on the tree trimmed so that they do not allow water into the trunk. Large branches can leave large wounds that cause the trunk to rot and then the tree falls over in such high winds.
If only small branches fell, then next spring look at the tree and you will see more small dead branches. Any time of the year is a good time to remove dead wood from a tree. A large number of branches falling from one tree may mean it is overdue to be thinned out so that more light makes it through to the inside. Large branch pruning should be done this winter. Any large stubs and any branches that are not fully broken, but are hanging on, should be removed. Hire a licensed arborist to clean up storm-damaged trees. I have seen trees being topped by ignorant tree pruning companies. Cutting off the ends of every branch on the top of a tree results in more maintenance and less safety. It creates the weakest possible branch attachment, the exact kind that breaks apart in storms. Question: One of the three large trunks of our Bradford pear split off during the storm. How do we fix the remainder of the trunk? Answer: It may not be possible to save
the tree. Some trees have very narrow branch angles, and they are very hard to save when a large piece splits off from the main trunk. The first thing to do is clean up the wound to see how much trunk is left in good condition. Use a knife or saw to trim the ragged edges of the wound. Remove as little as possible of the good wood. Do not coat the wound with any black stuff or paint; research shows that all these coverings slow the healing process. The remaining trunks may need to be bolted together for support. This will require drilling a hole through the trunks. A threaded rod is run through the holes. Nuts and washers at each end hold the trunks together. Cables higher up that have adjustable nuts also offer support for narrow trunks. The bolts and cables are very useful to prevent trunks from splitting. An arborist should be hired to install these devices. Putting them in the wrong location could split the trunks.

Making New Year’s Resolutions for 2022 BY CLAIRE LYNCH Last year I was talking to my niece, Kylie, about her New Year’s resolutions and she mentioned the most popular ones: eating in a healthier way, losing weight, joining a gym class and exercising more even if she can’t get to her gym class. Then she added one that surprised me a bit. She and her husband, Josh, were making a commitment to rescue a dog from an animal shelter. When I followed up with them a few months later, I discovered that in January they had adopted a Border Collie mix that their three kids, Chuck, Danny and Alex decided to name Hero. In June they went back to the same shelter in their home state of Virginia and chose to adopt a Great Pyrenees mix, a female they later named Fluffy. It struck me as a funny name for a dog but when I saw Fluffy’s face, and the hair all over her body, she looks very fluffy indeed. She’s got the sweet, smiling face of a Great Pyrenees dog and its gentle disposition. Fluffy was an 11-week-old puppy when they took her into their family. She was small compared to Hero but even as a puppy she had the large paws and long legs of a Great Pyrenees. Great Pyrenees dogs are calm and well-mannered and historically they’ve been known to be loyal guardians of their families. The experts say that these dogs are usually affectionate and trustworthy - and they will do their best to protect their family and their territory if a situation comes up. I thought it was great that Kylie and Josh had adopted two dogs from a rescue organization what a great New Year’s resolution. My other niece, Kathleen, and her husband Paul, have three kids: Mary, Nick and Elle. They live outside Charlotte, NC, and each New Year’s Eve they sit around their kitchen table talking about what each of them has chosen for resolutions. Kathleen knows that individually each person has tossed around various ideas but deciding can be hard. And a New Year’s resolution should be challenging but not impossibly hard. Mary, who’s 13, has played the piano for a few years and she chose to step it up and master a song that she’s been avoiding because it’s definitely challenging. Mary said, “I’m comfortable playing some basic and intermediate
songs - and my piano teacher is happy with my progress - but we both know that with some work, I can play a difficult song. I’ll practice and try out a good one and if I get to where I want to be, I’ll even give the family a mini concert.” Nick, 11, said that basketball is his favorite sport but he’s decided to try baseball in the spring - just to spread his horizons. “I like being on the basketball court and have lots of friends there,” Nick said, “but who knows? Maybe I’ll have fun being on a Little League team. I like taking a bat and hitting a baseball when dad and I play so I’ll try it. That’s my New Year’s resolution for next year.” Elle, 9, had a hard time making up her mind but with some coaching from her mom and dad, she said, “I’ve always wanted to make pottery.” Mary and Nick laughed along with their parents then Kathleen explained, “Actually New Year’s resolutions are meant to be a challenge like doing your chores around the house more responsibly or keep your room clean every day - not just to pick up a hobby.” Not one to be thrown off track, Elle shot back, “For me doing pottery and using a kiln would be a challenge. I’ve never done it before and my friend, Leslie, has done it and says it’s fun. Well, she says it’s challenging and fun at the same time.” Elle’s brother and sister smiled while Kathleen said, “Okay, I see your point. You can try pottery and I bet you’ll come home with some very nice vases, mugs and plates for all of us.” Happy with her mom’s answer, Elle sipped her hot chocolate with mini marshmallows thoughtfully. Pleased with her New Year’s resolution, she was eager to start her classes and determined to do a good job with her pottery. Before watching the New Year’s Eve festivities on TV, Paul said that he decided on a New Year’s resolution for the whole family. Living near Charlotte, they could drive to a special attraction in the “Queen City.” First he told them why Charlotte is called that it’s named in honor of the wife of King George III, Charlotte of Mecklenburg. And Charlotte is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. The kids nodded, understanding, but Kathleen encouraged Paul to move along from the his-

tory lesson and say what attractions he had in mind. “I’ve chosen a few different places and we can decide together where we’ll go first,” Paul said. “Next year we can choose another place to go visit. There’s the Discovery Place Science which is a hands-on museum for kids, the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Canoeing or kayaking would be done in the summer, obviously. Plus there are restaurants where you can have high tea. You dress up, choose your tea, eat little, bitty sandwiches then have your choice of dessert.” Nick rolled his eyes at the thought of going to a high tea service - “it sounds too fancy for me,” he said - but it interested the girls. As a family they decided to spend a large part of a day at the Discovery Place Science and it was settled. Not only would they have a good trip but each year they would do something different. Paul added something about getting into his exercise program and stick-

A Big, Dumb Jerk Takes a Tumble! BY TOM MARGENAU I recently shared a humorous story about a trip I took to Poland in the 1990s to train some of their Social Security officials on how we handled information outreach to American citizens about our Social Security programs. I received so much positive feedback on that column. Here is a typical example: “I have been a faithful reader of your column for many years. I have learned so much about Social Security. But it’s nice to get a break once in a while from all the details about that complicated program and read some of your human-interest stories. Keep them coming!” Well, it’s the holiday season and maybe we can take another little break from all the nitty-gritty details of Social Security, and I can share another funny story with you. This story takes place around Christmastime in 1997. My family and I had just moved to San Diego, California -- where I was in charge of public-affairs activities for the Social Security Administration in that part of the country. In addition to being the frontman for the SSA with local media outlets, that also meant I’d be running around town giving speeches to various community groups about Social Security and conducting retirement seminars with local employers. To set the scene for this story, I must tell you two things. First: We had moved to San Diego from gritty old Baltimore. And prior to that, we had lived and worked in many cold and wintry northern cities. So, moving to Southern California, where every day would be sunny and 72 degrees, was like a dream come true. And second, at the time, my mother was in failing health and I was planning a holiday season trip back to her home in Wisconsin. Before I took the trip, I thought it would be a good idea to make a little video for my mom to give her a taste of life in San Diego. I knew she would never be physically able to come visit. So, I rented a video camera. It was a big, bulky piece of equipment. (This was before cellphones became cameras and video recorders.) I took some shots of our family and home life. But I also went all around San Diego making little video clips. One morning, I had gone to the Social Security office in Pacific Beach, a coastal San Diego neighborhood, to give a training class to the office employees. After that, I had a lunchtime speech scheduled at a Rotary Club in downtown San Diego. After I finished the training class, I had some time to kill before I had to leave for the speech. Knowing I’d have this extra time, I had brought along the camera. So, off I went to the Pacific Beach boardwalk, which was just a couple blocks from the Social Security office. And there I stood on a bluff overlooking the ocean, taking panoramic shots of everything there
was to see. I knew my mom would be impressed. I was slowly walking backward, and I was panning from one side of the coast to the other. And I was doing a running commentary on all the sights we were looking at. Then I panned along the boardwalk to show all the people who were out on such a pretty day. (I still wasn’t used to the fact that hundreds of people were at the beach in the middle of December!) As I panned the boardwalk, in my lens viewer I suddenly spotted the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She was young. She was blonde. She was perfectly tanned. And she was wearing a rather skimpy bikini. She looked like one of those models from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. And she was running along the boardwalk toward me. I was transfixed. Even though this was supposed to be a travelogue for my 85-year-old mother, I couldn’t keep my camera off the gorgeous goddess! I followed her as she slowly ran toward me, keeping her in perfect focus as she approached. And again, all the while, I am slowly backing up. And just as she approached me, I tripped. I thought I was on a path with no obstacles, but I had backed right into a small cement bench along the ocean bluff. But to say I “tripped” is to put it very mildly. Actually, I was falling backward, uncontrollably, just as she ran by. As I was falling, I pivoted my body so that I wouldn’t land on my back; I also was trying to protect the expensive camera I had rented. I started to put out my hands to break my fall. But that never happened. What broke my fall was my head! It slammed with a BANG right onto the concrete boardwalk! For a short while, things were just a blur. I must have blacked out. But I did so for only a few seconds. I remember lifting my head off the concrete and slowly focusing on an odd shape that was blowing gently by me along the boardwalk. It was a bloody red blob of skin, about the size of a quarter, with some hairs sticking out of it. What could that be? I felt the top of my forehead and my hand came back a bloody mess. What was blowing in the breeze beside me was a piece of my scalp! Fortunately, a Florence Nightingale came to my aid. And it wasn’t the gorgeous blonde in the bikini. I’m sure she had a good chuckle, and maybe a “That serves you right, you big, dumb jerk” grin on her face as she passed by my mangled body. Instead, my savior was a nice 70-ish-year-old woman who helped me to the bench I had just fallen over. She had some water and used a hankie from her purse to help clean me up. As I slowly regained my senses, I realized there were a lot of contusions and abrasions, but no bones were broken and there really was no pain. But I was a bloody mess. My head wound was not deep, and the bleeding stopped quickly. But I had several
bad scrapes on my knees and elbows. My khaki dress slacks and blue shirt were torn and bloodstained! After maybe 10 minutes of intensive beachside care, I thanked the nice old lady. I just barely had time to get to a nearby drugstore where I bought antiseptic ointment and some bandages. I sat in my car and did an amateurish first aid job on my many cuts and bruises. I knew I didn’t have time to get home and change before my speech. I made it downtown
just in time. So, picture a room full of some of San Diego’s top business leaders. And at the podium, there was a guy who looked like he just survived a bomb blast! Fortunately, I was able to wow them with my Social Security presentation, so they were mostly able to ignore my pitiful appearance! Oh, by the way: The camera survived the crash, and so did the film it conContinued on next page

Going forward, will renting be more to your advantage? BY PHILIP A. RAICES
O
bserving current prices of housing as well as the cost of renovating and upgrading older homes and those places that have been neglected and in need of TLC, could renting could be your best path to pursue in 2022? It all depends upon your specific financial and personal situation. There are many questions to be asking yourself, one being will you be staying put at least 5 years in the place you want to purchase? Will all the tax deductions, potential appreciation, costs to own, lifestyle, current and future financial position be strong enough with your job and/or business? For the past 18 months the Covid pandemic unfortunately has had a huge devastating impact on earnings. Many jobs and businesses, especially restaurants, travel, and hospitality were shut down and many closed forever. Those that had bought homes in 2019 were affected tremendously and could not have possibly anticipated what was coming down the pike. How many homeowners had at least 6-12 months worth of additional savings to weather the pandemic storm that would throw a financial curveball to their job and/ or business? This should always be a standard item on the list of crucial things to consider when buying unless your job or business is guaranteed, which most are not! Those that went into the purchasing mode on a shoestring with the Covid hysteria and being safe with the lure of the historically lowest rates drew many to leave major cities for more space with the ability to work from home. However, as mortgage bailouts and forbearance programs are ending, foreclosures surged 32% in the 3rd quarter and are 67% higher than the 3rd quarter of 2020 as per CNBC. But due to greater increased equity accumulation in the majority of properties
over the last 10 years, this provides options to either work out something with their lender or consider selling. For those that are considerably astute, smart, and disciplined investors, putting the difference between the costs of ownership, (mortgage, taxes, repairs, and upkeep, etc.) and renting into another type of investment e.g. consumer staple stocks, emerging markets abroad, metals,(silver or gold), cryptocurrencies or a business that they have worked in and are well versed in and have years of experience may potentially do better financially. The bottom line is it’s all about diversification and realizing your risk tolerances. I am not a certified financial planner or a CPA, so I cannot offer any advice. However, my suggestions should be discussed with your CFP or advisor and CPA who will provide guidance. Renting can provide the flexibility of being able to move, as long as a shortterm lease is signed or if you are not concerned with leaving before your lease is up. However, the landlord would have legal grounds to try to collect the additional rent due as per the lease. The halt to evictions and foreclosure actions for millions was supposed to expire at the end of Dec 2021, but President Biden has extended the moratorium on foreclosures and evictions until January 31, 2022, and maybe further extended for those who have a lease assuming that they qualify after filling out a CDC Eviction Declaration Form and provide it to their landlord. The form certifies that you have been specifically impacted by the Covid-19
Pandemic and have pursued all other remedies to no avail. There are also income requirements for single renters who have earned less than $99,000 ($198,000 for couples) in 2020 or received a stimulus payment. Also, renters who were not required to report income in 2019 to the Internal Revenue Service were also exempt from eviction and foreclosure. Here is a link to a site that will provide an enormous amount of clarity and information as to available options on forbearance, foreclosure actions, and evictions: https:// themortgagereports.com/69687/caresact-mortgage-forbearance-endingwhat-to-dos A survey done with the major banks and lenders revealed that they are not considering foreclosure actions after forbearance ends. They are also aware that so many have positive equity in their homes and will not abandon and leave their homes, as they did in the implosion of the market in 2008. have The majority of homeowners have a viable option to sell as opposed to going through a foreclosure action, which can only start when 120 days in arrears on payments. Renting or staying where you are just may be the only viable option for you as prices have increased beyond the reach of many. As prices continue to rise, but maybe only by single digits over the next 1-2 years, more will continue to leave the expensive markets, like NY to other states, like Florida and Texas where the cost of living is considerably less especially with no State income tax and where other locales provide the benefits of a lower cost of living and a more stress-free lifestyle for millennial and Generation
Z groups. Happy New Year to all my clients and friends and to a happier, healthier and lucrative 2022. Philip A. A Big, Dumb Jerk Takes a Tumble! Continued from previous page tained. That evening, I gave my wife a preview of my nice travelogue of San Diego scenes that ended with a picturesque overview of the Pacific Ocean and people walking and jogging along a boardwalk. And just as a gorgeous bikini-clad blonde comes into sharp focus, the camera suddenly lurches upward and sideways and then down -- and then the film goes blank! And my wife, looking at my battle scars, echoed the sentiments of the boardwalk beauty when she said, “That
serves you right, you big, dumb jerk!” I hope you got a little chuckle out of that story. And next week, I promise we’ll get back to some serious Social Security issues!

BY TRACY BECKERMAN “We’re going to eat more kale in 2022,” I said to my husband. He looked at me morosely. “Why? What did I do?” “What?” I said. “Nothing.” “Then why are we going to eat more kale?” “Because it’s good for you,” I said. “So is kelp,” he said. “But I don’t want to eat that, either.” I frowned at him. I had no idea why he was so biased against kale. Kale didn’t taste bad. In fact, in a recent survey of the top 20 most hated vegetables, kale was No. 19 ... much less unpopular than Brussels sprouts, which clocked in at formidable No. 1 and had a 98% yuck rating. Even people who don’t eat vegetables said they hated Brussels sprouts, so that should tell you everything you need to know about Brussels sprouts.
You’ve Got Kale!
Even my dog, who would eat anything, including dirt and slugs, would not eat a Brussels sprout if it fell on the floor. Personally, I happen to like Brussels sprouts, and kale, so I’m not sure what that says about my husband and me other than, perhaps, opposite vegetable haters attract. Up until just a few years ago, I’d never even heard of kale. When it came to dark green leafy vegetables, I was firmly on Team Spinach. Then, all of a sudden, everyone started talking about superfoods, like quinoa and kale, and how eating them could make you feel better, live longer, see through walls, and pick up a car with one hand. You could get kale salads, kale smoothies and even kale cookies, which, even I’ll admit, is a sin against Keebler. Social media said kale was the new dandelion greens, which didn’t mean much to me since I don’t routinely graze in my
backyard. Eventually, though, I got on the kale-wagon and decided to add more kale to my diet. I was ambivalent about the taste, but my husband was not. He hated it. Detested it. Loathed it! And this was coming from a guy who once tasted our dog’s dinner to make sure it hadn’t gone bad. We’d actually been down this newfood road once before. Years ago, I tried to introduce tofu into our diet. My husband refused to believe it was a food item and tried to convince me that it was actually used to grout tile. Meanwhile, back at gross food central, I wondered how I could get my husband on board with eating more kale. I thought maybe I could hide it in his food the way I used to chop up spinach for the kids and put it in their macaroni and cheese. So, I looked online for a kale reci-
pe and found one for a “Hearty Kale Salad.” I read through the instructions and then stopped at step three, which told me to massage the kale. Massage the kale? Did I have to take it to a spa? Would I have to spring for a facial for it, too? I scoffed and slammed my laptop shut. If anyone was going to get a massage, it was going to be me after having to deal with all this kale nonsense.

Brightest Stars of the Year BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of December 26, 2021 - January 1, 2022
If you haven’t been stargazing for a while, you might be surprised to step outdoors under a dark sky to see the stars rising in the east during late December. You may often hear astronomers refer to the winter sky as the most brilliant of the year. What we mean, of course, is that the stars appear much more dazzling during the Northern Hemisphere winter than during any other season of the year. Folks tend to think that the stars shine so brilliantly at this time of year because the weather is so cold and crisp and that this somehow makes the stars appear brighter, but there’s actually a more fundamental reason for the stars’ brilliance: The winter night sky contains more bright stars than it does during any other season. It really is as simple as that. Each season of the year features its own collection of stars and constellations; the springtime and autumn skies contain relatively few bright stars, and the summertime sky features the magnificent band of the Milky Way arching overhead. But the winter sky ... oh, man, that is something else! Just a few hours after dark during late December, January and February,
step outside and you’ll be able to find eight of the 25 brightest stars in all the heavens. The most dazzling, of course, is Sirius--the main star in Canis Major, the great dog. This week can now find this sparkling gem low in the southeastern sky shortly after dark. It may appear to twinkle wildly as it rises over the horizon; this occurs because its low elevation means its light must pass through a greater column of turbulent air on its way to our eyes than when it’s higher in the sky. Sirius is the most brilliant star in all the heavens (except, of course, for the sun!) It outshines number two -Capella, in Auriga, the charioteer -- by more than four times. You’ll easily spot Capella high in the east-northeastern sky after dark this month. It is the brightest star in a pentagon-shaped grouping that is much easier to trace than a charioteer. Following Capella are, in order of decreasing brightness, Rigel (marking the southwestern corner of Orion, the hunter), Procyon (in Canis Minor, the lesser dog), reddish Betelgeuse (the northeastern-most corner of Orion), Aldebaran (the brightest in Taurus, the bull), Pollux (in Gemini, the twins), and Castor (also in Gemini). If seeing so many bright stars in the sky isn’t impressive enough for you, just wait until mid-January. You’ll have another brilliant celestial object to add to the collection, one that’s consider-
ably brighter than all these stellar gems combined. I’m referring to, of course, the moon. The advantage of this brilliant winter sky is that one doesn’t need to venture far off into the wilderness to see it. Even urban stargazers can easily enjoy the display right from home. If, however, you decide to travel to a dark-sky site for your stargazing this
winter, you’ll need to bundle up and take some warm liquids with you. I promise that your extra effort will be rewarded by the glittering stars that make up this magnificent wintertime night sky. Visit Dennis Mammana at dennismammana.com. COPYRIGHT 2021 CREATORS.COM

Plainview Water District Commissioners Andrew Bader, Amanda Field, and Marc Laykind stand behind the generous toy donations that will be sent to support the Toys for Tots Foundation.
Plainview-Old Bethpage continues to show its generosity year in and year out by contributing to the Toys for Tots Foundation. As it has done in years past, the Plainview Water District (PWD) proudly partnered with the Toys for Tots Foundation, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. This year, over 100 toys were collected by the District. “We are consistently impressed each year with the kindness and participation shown by the members of our community during the holiday season,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Despite all of the challenges of the past year, we had an excellent turnout. These contributions are so valuable in making certain the holiday season is special for so many others. We look forward to continuing to support the Toys for Tots Foundation next holiday season.” The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve ‘Toys for Tots’ Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide all children across the United States with happiness and joy throughout the holiday season. Through the gift of a new toy, disadvantaged children will not be overlooked during the holidays, and will know that a community of people cares for them.
