Dear Stakeholder

Editorial Team

Thank you for choosing WholeSay One of the key responsibilities of a SETA is to develop a Sector Skills Plan (SSP) to inform the skills priorities for a particular sector. As a key deliverable, the W&RSETA has to develop this five-year plan and review it annually to provide a blueprint for the skills priorities for the Wholesale and Retail Sector emanating from credible research which highlights the sector’s skills demands and supply trends. The W&RSETA has recently embarked on consultations to engage employers, industry associations and training providers in preparation for the annual submission of the SSP to the Department of Higher Education and Training by 31 August 2021.

Martha Shingange – Editor-in-Chief Rhulani Mavunda – Editor Desmond Mashao – Production Coordinator

The full schedule of the engagements is provided on page 5. We are very pleased with our efforts to professionalise the W&R Sector through our research initiatives. It is a pleasure to introduce the newly appointed Retail Leadership Chair of the Wholesale and Retail Leadership Chair (W&RLC) at the University of Johannesburg. The chair was established in November 2020, becoming the W&RSETA’s third W&RLC, following the ones at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Durban University of Technology. Meet our newest Retail Leadership Chair on page 2

We encourage decision makers and key role players from our wholesale and retail companies and organisations that represent the interests of the sector and training providers to participate in the various sessions that have been scheduled up to 5 July 2021 to provide input and insights into the labour market, economy and skills development focusing on the growth of the sector.

Until next month, Yours in skills development,

Martha

MEET THE W&RSETA LEADERSHIP CHAIR AT UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG

T

he W&RSETA is pleased to announce its third Wholesale and Retail Leadership Chair (W&RLC) at the University

of Johannesburg (UJ). The SETA made history in Africa in 2011 with the introduction of the Retail Chair initiative launching the first chair at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. In 2017, the second chair was established at the Durban University of Technology. The aim of the Retail Chairs is to professionalise and improve skills levels in the Wholesale and Retail Sector and position the sector as an attractive career proposition for young talent through the development of qualifications at NQF level 5-10 and innovative research. The Retail Leadership Chairs serve as conduits between industry and institutions of learning, in terms of constructive engagements, best

2021/22 ANNUAL PERFORMANCE PLAN

T

he W&RSETA has completed the second month of the 2021/22 financial year which kick-started with the Grant Season. We have hit the ground running with the implementation of our priorities as outlined in the Annual Performance Plan.

Following a challenging 2020/21, we are slowly regaining ground on the targets that were deferred due to the reprioritisation that was necessitated by budget reductions as a result of the four-month SDL payment levy to provide relief to companies from the impact of COVID-19. The W&RSETA’s skills development mandate remains, but our directive now extends in line with the requirement for SETAs to contribute to South Africa’s burdening challenges of unemployment, particularly among the youth. We will focus on working closely with community education and training colleges; infrastructure support for TVET colleges; the implementation of candidacy programmes; and facilitating entrepreneurship development and support, as well as Information Communication Technology interventions for 4IR

SUCCESS STORY W&RSETA MBA/PhD Bursary Scheme

T

he W&RSETA’s bursary scheme for MBA and PhD qualifications is in its ninth year of implementation after it was established as a component of the Retail Chair’s initiative. The primary focus of the scheme is to professionalise the W&R Sector by encouraging employees to pursue qualifications at higher levels to address skills gaps in the sector. Kevin Naidoo is the epitome of dedication and commitment to succeed against all odds. Born with a hearing disability, Kevin did not allow this to stop him from reaching for his dreams. His story of one who started off cleaning toilets to completing an MBA degree is one of sheer brilliance. Kevin applied for an MBA bursary from the W&RSETA to complete his studies with MANCOSA which he started in 2017. The SETA fully funded his programme including study materials. “The financial burden was lifted off my shoulders, thanks to the W&RSETA”. Kevin admits that the journey was not easy but worth all the effort and sacrifices as he completed his MBA cum laude.

Kevin Naidoo, Training Officer, RCL Foods

“I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to each one of you for being part of my journey in completing the MBA. It has been my dream to complete the MBA. The cherry on the top is that I achieved a distinction in my dissertation. I will graduate on 5 June 2021. The W&RSETA can stand tall and proud that they were part of a disabled person’s dream. I salute you for being part of my journey. Next stop is my PhD.” Kevin is a marathon runner and has completed the Comrades Marathon three times. He is also an author of a book titled “Aim Higher” which is currently being translated to Braille.

Advocacy TEA with SMMEs

O

n 22 May 2021 we joined the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) for a day of empowerment with SMMEs

from various sectors including wholesale and retail. TEA is an organisation that focuses on the education and W&RSETA Gauteng North Provincial Manager, Lebogang Khoza engaging with the audience

empowerment of small businesses in townships through various initiatives including workshops. SMMEs joined physically at The Hang Awt in Tembisa, outside Midrand and spent the day engaging institutions, including the W&RSETA, on small business and development support. The W&RSETA identified this event as an opportunity to reach out to SMMEs in the Wholesale and Retail Sector

to participate in the skills development and create awareness

which accounts for over 90% of its stakeholders. The SETA’s

on various programmes that are available to non-levy paying
