ABOUT LITERARY ARTS

Portland Book Festival (PBF) is a program of Literary Arts. Founded in 1984, Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit literary organization located in Portland's Central Eastside. Our mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature.

Literary Arts creates opportunities for readers and writers of all ages and walks of life to engage with books and stories. Explore our programming in the concert hall, in public high schools, on the radio, and in our community space, cafe, & independent bookstore all year long.

Dear Friends,

Every November, we have the privilege of watching what happens when great books, big ideas, and curious people share the same space. Portland Book Festival has always been more than a celebration of literature; it’s a celebration of connection.

This year’s lineup reflects the extraordinary range of voices shaping our cultural moment, from bestselling authors like Rebecca Yarros and Stacey Abrams to poets, essayists, and storytellers whose work reminds us that there’s no single way to tell a story, or to see the world.

Across ten stages, through workshops, pop-up readings, and lively conversations, we’ll gather downtown to listen, reflect, and be reminded that dialogue—the real, in-person kind—still matters.

We’re proud that each year, this festival brings thousands of people to Portland’s South Park Blocks to experience the power of words and the joy of community. Whether you’re here for discovery, inspiration, or just a really good day surrounded by people who love books as much as you do, welcome.

Yours,

GENERAL FESTIVAL INFORMATION

Portland Book Festival features more than 100 presenters in onstage author events, kids’ story times, pop-up readings, and writing workshops. This city-wide celebration also includes a book fair featuring more than 80 national and local vendors, as well as local food trucks and other activities.

Writing workshops for youth and adults will run online and in person throughout the festival week. In addition, Portland Book Festival Cover to Cover, a week of neighborhood literary encounters, takes place from November 1–9 in multiple locations throughout the Portland area. Find more information about other activities around the festival on pages 15–21 in this guide.

WHEN

Saturday, November 8, 2025 • 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

The box office tent in front of Portland Art Museum's Mark Building opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. Venue doors and the book fair both open at 9:00 a.m. All events conclude by 6:00 p.m.

EVENT ENTRY INFO

A festival pass in the form of a wristband admits you, space permitting, to all day-of PBF events, with the exception of the Rebecca Yarros and Stacey Abrams special events, which require separate tickets for entry. We encourage you to purchase and pick up your passes in advance. More information is available at pdxbookfest.org.

In observance of PBF partner venues' policies, bags, backpacks, or items larger than 11"x17"x6" may not be admitted. Babies in carriers are permitted. All items are subject to inspection.

Entry to and seating at Portland Book Festival events is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and standing in line does NOT guarantee entry to any specific event even with a festival pass. The only exceptions are those who hold tickets for the Rebecca Yarros and Stacey Abrams special events and advanced book purchases for Newmark Theatre events, which must be purchased separately from and in addition to the required festival wristband.

Plan to arrive early to your desired events. Saving seats is not permitted. All rooms will be cleared between events. If your desired event is at capacity, you can check out a different discussion, find a pop-up reading, explore the Portland Art Museum (PAM), or take a break at the food carts.

ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY

WHERE

The Portland Art Museum, The Judy, and neighboring venues in the South Park Blocks. Find the map on page 11 or online via Google Maps.

BOOK SIGNING AND POLICIES

Authors will sign books immediately following their onstage event unless otherwise noted. Books must be purchased from a festival bookstore in order to be signed, with the exception of one preowned book per author. Why do we restrict pre-owned books? On-site book sales are absolutely critical to the success of the festival. By purchasing books at the festival, you support the independent bookstores that partner with us, as well as the authors and publishers who travel from near and far to share their work at the festival. Thank you for your support and understanding of this policy.

Book dealers are NOT allowed to bring books into the book signing area. Dealers with rolling carts and/or wagons are not allowed on the festival grounds.

Portland Book Festival features satellite bookstores at every all-day PBF stage, where attendees can purchase a book and get it signed on site. See page 11 for details on each satellite bookstore. Festival booksellers include: Annie Bloom's Books, Broadway Books, Literary Arts, Powell's Books

Literary Arts has a zero tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, including but not limited to: race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual orientation, age, body size, disability, appearance, religion, citizenship, pregnancy, marital or familial status, and military or veteran status. Harassment includes, but is not limited to: stalking, verbal or physical intimidation, offensive verbal comments, physical assault and/or battery, harassing or non-consensual photography or recording, bathroom policing, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome physical attention.

Literary Arts recognizes that reading and writing, by their nature, include exposure to controversial and challenging ideas. Therefore, harassment does not include respectful disagreement or critique in good faith.

Literary Arts reserves the right to revoke, without refund, tickets of any attendee or participant not in compliance with this policy, as well as the right to remove any person not in compliance with this policy.

For more information, please visit literary-arts.org/anti-harassment-policy.

SPECULATIVE FICTION IN 75 MINUTES (TEENS)

Facilitator: Déy Rivers • 10–11:15 a.m.

Can you really write a Spec-Fic story in 500 words or less? Yes. Yes, you can. Join the adaptable world of Drabble, Micro Fiction, and Vignette. Use artwork to prompt exploration into Spec-Fic lines of thinking: “What if…”, “If only…”, and “If this goes on…” It’s challenging but glorious!

This workshop is free, but please use this QR code to register in advance.

REMEMBER MY NAME POETRY WORKSHOP (TEENS)

Facilitator: Nicky Nicholson-Klingerman • 11:45 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

The veil is thinnest, now is the time to envision your legacy, strengths, and grave mistakes through the poetic lens of the elegy. Delve into Susan Dickinson's heart-wrenching poems for Emily among other elegies and epitaphs of the past, and learn a thing or two about yourself in the end.

This workshop is free, but please use this QR code to register in advance.

WRITE AROUND PORTLAND PRESENTS: PRE-TEEN WORKSHOPS AT THE JUDY (1000 SW BROADWAY) | AUBREY STUDIO 1

SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY WORKSHOP (MIDDLE GRADE)

10–11:30 a.m.

Science fiction and fantasy can transport us to the distant future, the distant past, or to a reality far detached from our own. Join Write Around Portland for a workshop that will use sensory activities to truly unleash your imagination! Along the way, we’ll do a lot of writing and sharing, and we’ll practice giving each other positive, specific feedback. Finally, we’ll explore answers to the question: what makes an imaginary world feel “real”?

FAIRY TALES & FABLES WORKSHOP (MIDDLE GRADE)

12–1:30 p.m.

We all want our writing to be memorable. In this workshop, we’ll examine a portion of a fairy tale or fable that’s stood the test of time. What about the tale has stuck in people’s imaginations for so long? And how can we use imagery, voice, or powerful words to have a similar effect on modern audiences? Along the way, we’ll do a lot of writing and sharing, and we’ll practice giving each other positive, specific feedback.
