Good Day Sunshine - Jackson Wy
A Light at the End of the Tunnel - Anonymous In this world I used to dream, that in another world, there’s another version of me. In that world–what happens there– there’s pain and sorrow that I feel and I bear. But then one day, there was a brand-new fresh start; a new year, a new me, a newly discovered change of heart.
But the good only comes after the worst blows past, and this kind of bad could never be rehearsed…
This new year, I found, started off with a bang. The chimes and bells anew, alike had already rang.
But long after traversing, through this cold, deep cave, I saw a tiny speck of light, and I knew that it would be me that it would save.
But something happened to me one day, and I was very confused. But I thought a conflict last year had been their motive to do. These little happenings became more frequent and more severe, but I had no idea how much they would impair. I saw that I was in this tunnel, in deep and in dark, and the days passing by were no longer a walk in the park. I entered the depths of this tunnel– into the deep of its core. Then, the world was all black, and I turned my back to where I was once before. But the fights kept going, and nothing was getting better; I was so lost in it that I couldn’t find the upsetter.
Then one day, I was under attack; hit with a ball in the head— the world went black— for a second—I knew this is where I would crack; and it was now most apparent: I will never turn back…
So I dashed to the light; it took my breath while I ran; then, I saw a bright-lit portal that had an outstretched hand. I took the hand, and it pulled me in tight; it pulled me into a new world, as the hole filled with blinding white light. So take this, dear reader, as a lesson to heart, that as long as you reach out, and have one to rely on… you can never– ever– be torn a p a r t.
In loving memory of Scout (Maggie) Cerveny, daughter of Mrs. Karen Cerveny. May your spirit live on through your art as well as creativity, and may you find a light at the end of the tunnel.

“...I used to dream...”
...I used to dream...
Tale of a Tragically Beautiful Girl Cheri K “Bella, for the fifth time this week, you can’t keep going out past curfew,” my dad scolded, annoyed. “You’re grounded, missy.” Hi, I’m Bella, and this is my crappy life. It’s so unfair. What’s the problem with staying out for an extra thirty minutes? Besides, it was already the next day. Dad was always so problematic. Paper Sea Turtle “Whatever. I don’t care. I don’t have to listen to you,” I scoffed. Lila H “That’s it!” my dad exclaimed as Mom walked in. “You’re going to summer school to learn some respect!” “What? You can’t do that!” I exclaim. “Mom, tell him how deranged he is!” I pout, consulting my mom. “Grayson and I think this is for the best. Your behavior needs to get under control,” my mom replied. “Ugh! I hate you guys! You never understand me! Why do you always act like this?” I complain. Why does Mom always have to be so submissive? This is so ridiculous! Before my “parents” could utter another word, I stormed out. I couldn’t stand it to be there any longer. Fire Dragon If they did say something, I couldn’t hear them. I sprinted down the Eye block, not caring where I ended up. Wherever it would be, it would have Lilah G to be better than the living standards I was currently in, right? Suddenly, I felt myself ram into a tree and fall over. Everything around me went dark. I could barely see the outlines of the thousands of trees. I must be in some sort of forest. But even though my feet were just on solid ground, it felt like I was falling down the tallest building in the world. I was still falling. Everything around me was spiraling in the most exotic colors and patterns I’ve ever seen that would make anyone go insane. I was just in a dark forest a few seconds ago, wasn’t I? Eventually, I hit the ground. Things were still fuzzy, and it felt like I could barely stand, yet I got up easily as if I never fell in the first place. The exotic colors were here, too. At first, what appeared to be a room was now a block-like endless land. It looked like the base of a video Cuts Hurt No game on a computer or something, profound in the code. The room was Matter How Big shifting, changing color, making things seem disorientating. Which way Brianna M was left again? It was too hard to tell. As insane as this...place is, I could spot some kind of figure moving about the changing material with ease.

“Hey! You! Who are you? Where am I? Why am I here?” I yell out. “Why, you’re in Gaelia, a place where lost souls find what they view their life to be back on Earth. Everyone’s perspective of this place is different, dear Bella. For example, I saw an endless field of flowers on a sunny day, with light rain, so the flowers stayed healthy. There are fluffy clouds to rest on in the sky and endless trails of rainbows for adventure. Oh, and I am Gaelia’os Diablis,” she explained, her form becoming clear to make out. She appeared to be a wise mage of some kind, dressed in a long cloak with a shifting galaxy sky imprinted on it. Her skin seemed to be a light blue. Her white flowing hair looked magical, almost… otherworldly. “How do you know my name?” I asked timidly. “I know everything. I am the creator of this realm, after all. The only things I cannot see are your perspectives,” she answered wisely in response. “How do I go back home?” I asked. “Going home is a difficult task, child. You must see yourself at home in your happiness. Tell me, what do you see around you?” she spoke. “Well, it appears to be chaos. Everything is constantly changing with exotic colors, making my head spin. I can barely even stand! It’s like I’m on a boat with crashing waves underneath,” I replied. “Oh, tragically beautiful girl,” she replied somberly, “it would appear that you don’t want to go home if that’s what you see. I’m afraid you can’t go back,” I can’t even describe how I feel at this moment. “Is there any way to change what I see?” I asked, hoping that there was still a chance. “That is up to you, dear. I cannot help you any further,” she replied. “No, please! Wait!” I exclaimed. But by then, the goddess was already gone. I felt… devastated. How was I supposed to get back home? The jumping floor made my legs give out, or did it? This was supposed to be better than my home. I hated it there. If that’s so, then why am I sad all of a sudden? My eyes shed a tear, and I was brought back to a time—a memory. What I thought was a dream. I had just turned seven at the time. I remember this vividly. It was when Aunt Danielle died. I remember standing beside the casket. Her casket. The same feeling of sadness washed over me. I was too young of an age to experience loss. But it happened anyway, and I learned. I’ve never been the same since. I haven’t cried since.

Then, a new scene came into my mind, except that this was no memory. This is…the present? I see my parents. They’re crying. Why? An officer is standing next to them. I can make out words being said. “Missing… ran away… lost… Bella… dead?” They’re crying… about me? My parents care? A sudden sadness washes over me. They think I’m dead! I’ve made a terrible mistake. I don’t hate my parents. At times, maybe, but I love them! “I wanna go home!” I wept, sobbing. So many tears were falling that I couldn’t keep my eyes open. As I was crying, I suddenly felt the ground beneath me start to calm. It became soft. Through my tear-filled eyelids, I could make out a light. A bright light. Am I…dead? As my eyes opened, I saw a white room. I was in a soft, white bed. A hospital. How long have I been out for? My head hurts. Suddenly, I hear a voice—a yell. “She’s awake! My baby’s awake!” the voice exclaimed. It was Mom’s voice. I looked over and saw her looking shocked, sad, and happy all at the same time. A tragic, regretful smile came across my face. “Oh, Mom!” I bewailed as we embraced for the first time in forever, sobbing. It felt good and warm. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it! I love you and Dad, too!” Then Dad walked in and stood at the door with emotions similar to Mom's. Soon, he walked up to the bed and joined in on the hug. “I love you guys. I’m so sorry,” I wept, feeling calmer in my loved one’s arms. “It’s okay, sweetheart. We love you, too. I’m sorry for getting angry that night,” Dad replied. Mom and Dad pulled back, smiling at me while rubbing the tears away from their eyes. I smiled back. “This is for you,” Dad said, handing me an envelope with my name on it. “It’s a letter. It came in the mail yesterday. I take the envelope and look for the sender. No name. I open it and read the letter. It was only one sentence, with five words. I could instantly tell who it was from. I would ask myself how it got here, but I knew that question could never be answered. A smile forms on my face as I read it over and over. “Who’s it from?” Mom asked, curious. “A friend of mine,” I reply, feeling a sense of enlightenment. “It’s nothing important,” I look back down at the letter, reading it once more. “Welcome home, tragically beautiful girl.”

...I used to dream... Freed Soul Madelyn M
I (Marie) sat at my school lunch table just before Thanksgiving break. I held a tray in front of me: green beans, fish sticks, a mysterious slop, and an apple. The conversations weren’t unusual, with plans for the break, homework, and sports. However, I noticed Cassidy sitting across from me. She was nervous and fidgety. “Cass, you okay?” She nodded but kept her mouth clamped shut. Only moments later, I heard her say, “What is wrong with you?” I whipped my head around. She was talking to my best friend, Judah. I felt distraught, although I wasn’t sure why. I wanted to defend my friend, but I wasn’t even sure what the problem was. I was so caught up in my own thoughts I nearly missed Cassidy's shout, “There are no ghosts!” After school, my dad picked me up in his white van. “Are you ready to go to Mallory’s?” He asked. Mallory was my mom’s Mother. I didn’t know her well. Mom thought of her as crazy. She said she was always rambling on about things that didn’t exist. She passed a month ago, and Aunt Merrida- her sister- isn’t in a great mental state. My parents and I are left to clean out her large house. It had been passed down through generations. My mom broke that tradition. It lasted almost three hundred years. At the door, I met my mom. She embraced me and asked if I would start cleaning the basement. I complied. I reached for the door handle but heard steps behind me. I turned and met Merrida. She was essentially breathing down the back of my neck.

“Umm…Hi Auntie,” I greeted her. “Celine.” I was confused. “I’m sorry, what did you say?” Merrida had fear in her eyes and stood frozen, staring at the door. Almost as if she was staring past the door. “Okay?” I pushed the door open and drove away the strange interaction. I was hit with a cloud of darkness. The cloud was thick and foggy; I couldn’t see. I tried to inch down the stairs, but I managed to knock my lavender glasses off my face. They went flying into the dark basement, and I couldn’t find them because my surroundings were dark and now blurry. A sudden burst of adrenaline caused me to bolt across the sea of the basement. I ended up running right into the front of a door. The door handle stabbed me in the hip, and I bent in half. I looked up and faintly saw a sign hanging on the door. It appeared to be made out of a scrap of cardboard with red writing on it. I read the scribbled words “The Doll Room.” I reached for the handle that had so rudely stabbed me in the moments prior. It was frozen over. I shivered. Then I threw open the door. My lips chapped, and my eyelashes were glazed with ice. Somehow, my great aunt Merrida was already down there. I ducked behind a pile of boxes. While she was shaking something aggressively and shouting gibberish, I began to look around the room. There were towering shelves full of…dolls? Cracked dolls, doll heads, porcelain dolls, large dolls, small dolls. They all lined the walls. “I KNOW YOU DID IT! I KNOW IT CELINE!” There was a loud shattering noise. I snapped my head to where the sound came from. Merrida was staring guiltily at the ground—a ground covered in the glass shards of a doll. A blue aura filled the room. Then Merrida noticed me. She nearly jumped out of her skin. Then she bolted out of the room. “Careful Marie, she killed Mallory. I know it!” Who killed Mallory? I wondered. A translucent figure of a small girl emerged from the rubble. She had pale blonde curls and a pale face. She wore a lacy gown splattered with blood. Hello there…

I knew that we would get there soon, we got there at the height of moon. We never knew what ever could top, the beautiful view we got from atop. We saw there, we had a couple of friends, even just with three, the fun never ends. We knew then, the fun would never stop, it continued when we saw the view from atop.

...I used to dream... A Tale of Two Bunnies Konrad F
Translation - Polish Bajka o Dwóch Zajączkach
Original - English
The bunnies lived in a flowering meadow, Where there was the golden sun and not much shadow. Thus many blue, blueberry bushes could sprout, And they all could spread far out and about. Two rabbits, by the names of Fluffy and Puffy, Heard that there were blueberries more stuffy In the leafy wood around the sunny meadow. They realized that to be happy they must harrow. “The forest is dangerous,” they were advised By the old, old, old hare, that was very much wise. Despite all the warnings, the bunnies left home, To find piquant berries and eat like a starved gnome. The path to the forest was long and tight, But Fluffy was using his legs with all his might. Puffy came too but had to tie her gray shoe, And went ‘till a sharp red fox popped out of the blue. “Hello there,” spoke the fox, a sly tone in his voice. Fluffy and Puffy knew they had to make a choice, The rabbits would need to run away or lie. “A chicken condo is close by,” Puffy replied. The silly fox was gullible, so he believed, And he left promptly to find his favorite feed. The bunnies clickety, clickety, clacked for food, And finally reached the spot that eased their mood. “A blueberry bush! Finally!” Fluffy exclaimed. Puffy clumped to the cluster and had it claimed.

Stwierdziły, ż e trzeba pracować by się radować. Puffy też przebierała, ale przerwały by zawiązać szary but I szli, aż nagle pojawił się rudy lis. Cześć - powiedził chytry lis. Fluffy i Puffy musieli zdecydować, Czy uciekać czy skłamać. Kurczaki są blisko - Puffy oszukała. Lis jej uwierzył I poszedł by znaleźć uwielbiony pokarm. Zające podskakując szukały jedzenia, I wreszcie znalazły upgranione miejce. Jagody! Wreszcie! - Krzknął Fluffy. Puffy podbiegła do krzaków i zaczęła zbierać. Niedługo koszyk był pełny i zające poszły. Nagle przyleciała sowa i przerwała sielankę.
Soon their basket was a whale, and they left the bush. However, an owl flew by and broke the hush.
Będziecie pysznym objadem – powiedziała, Zające przestraszyły się i uciekły. Fluffy i Puffy schowali się pomiędzy drzewami I zgubiły jagody, które rozleciały się jak pszczoły.
“Hello there,” spoke the fox, a sly tone in his voice. Fluffy and Puffy knew they had to make a choice, Z powrotem na łące, zające ponownie znudzone, The rabbits would need to run away or lie. Pomimo, ż e wróciły do domu całe i zdrowe. “A chicken condo is close by,” Puffy replied. Od tamtej chwili zające szukały jedzenia Na swojej łące, bez niepotrzebnej pracy i The silly fox was gullible, so he believed, niebezpieczeństwa. And he left promptly to find his favorite feed. The bunnies clickety, clickety, clacked for food, And finally reached the spot that eased their mood. “A blueberry bush! Finally!” Fluffy exclaimed. Puffy clumped to the cluster and had it claimed. Soon their basket was a whale, and they left the bush. However, an owl flew by and broke the hush. “You will make a delicious dinner!” She said, The bunnies, with the worry of being chewed, fled. Fluffy and Puffy escaped to the lush trees, And dropped the blueberries which flew like bees. Back in the meadow, the rabbits were very dull, Although they had escaped with their own skull. From then on, the bunnies got their snickety snack From their home meadow, with much of their work cut back.

“...an outsreched hand...”
...an outstretched hand... The Polaroid Violet K
The yellow box read: Color I-type Film. Below that, the box declared that it was from the brand Polaroid. Growing up in a very technological generation, I didn’t really know much about vintage cameras. I never really had heard the word Polaroid but what I did know about it at the time was that it was an older camera-thingamabob and that it was the title of a Liam Payne song. I stared back at the film filled with both gratitude and confusion. “There’s another present in there that will explain that.” My grandma told me. I dug through the bag of Christmas presents that my grandparents had given me for Christmas. The bag revealed another box of film and the “explanation present”. I was immediately cleared of confusion and felt its replacement of excitement. “A camera!” I announced, filled with lots and lots of joy. The camera was purple, my favorite color. My grandparents explained to me the process of how a Polaroid camera works. “After you take a picture,” My grandpa explained, “You receive a piece of film. You wait a little bit for that film and soon it will reveal your picture.” I was immediately hooked. I thanked my grandparents again and promised to take PLENTY of photos on our upcoming vacation to Starved Rock. “This was such a good Christmas. I LOVED all of my presents!” I declared a little while later. My mom and I both wanted to test out the Polaroid. We took the camera out of its box. We also found the instructions and started to read them. “So, you put the film in here,” My mom told me, “and then you turn the red button on, and then you press this yellow button to take the picture.” I followed the instructions exactly as I was told. However, I seemed to have hit a small problem as the camera would not turn on. “You probably need to charge it.” My dad informed me. I followed his instructions, immediately took out the charger, and charged the Polaroid in my bedroom. Two days later, it was my younger sister Ruby’s third birthday, and my family was going on a vacation to Starved Rock. After the long and treacherous one-and-a-half-hour drive, we parked at the villa we were staying at and unpacked our stuff. In the room my siblings and I were sleeping in, I put my camera and the charger charging it in an outlet. My family and I then started to hang out with each other and start our fun vacation. “You wanna try your Polaroid now, Violet?” My dad asked me. “Sure!” I answered as I dashed up the stairs to my room and got the camera. I attempted and failed to turn the camera on again.

“I think you’re using the wrong kind of charger.” My dad informed me. “Oh,” I said. We used a different charger. Within a few hours, the Polaroid was fully charged and I could take my first picture with it. “Psst. Isy, can I get a picture of you and Ruby?” I asked my older sister. “Sure,” Isy responded. “Thanks,” I replied, “Ruby, say ‘Cheese’”. Ruby turned to the camera and gave me one of her cutest smiles. I pressed the yellow button and soon a flash came and a piece of film was exiting the camera. I put the film on the counter and waited a few hours for the picture to reveal itself. “It looks good,” I declared, “Ruby’s face is a little bright though.” Still, I was very satisfied with this picture. “It probably has to do with the flash,” My dad told me, “You can turn it off.” For my next picture, I decided to turn the flash off. During the rest of the vacation, I took exactly two more pictures. Both of them of Ruby, of course. “They look wonderful,” I exclaimed. These pictures were a little more dimmer than the first one I had taken. A little while later, we headed back home to Lisle. A few days after that, my grandparents visited us again and asked me a few questions about the camera. “Do you need more film yet?” My grandma asked. “Not yet,” I answered. “I’m glad you figured it out.” My grandpa said. I thanked them again for the camera. It really was one of my favorite Christmas gifts this year. They also got me a case for my Polaroid so I didn’t have to keep it in the box when travelling. The box was black with a red zipper. “Thanks for the case,” I told my grandparents. This gift has meant so much to me. I love the quality of the pictures on my Polaroid. I am starting to get into photography because of it. This camera has taught me that I have the skills to create beautiful artwork even if it's not on paper or made of clay. The Polaroid has reminded me that there is beauty in everything.

I lay in bed. Staring up at the ceiling for two hours, thinking of what I could have been doing. I felt no reason to do anything. Reading? No, that was for nerds. When was the last time I read a book? When was the last time I brushed my teeth? What day is it? I shuffled back my thoughts like a deck of cards. Running? No, I don't have the motivation for that. I turned over in bed, so I faced a wall. Motivation, I whispered the word in my mind, having none of it. I looked towards the window with the white accents and deep redwood. I shifted my gaze to the photograph on my wall. It had a black frame. It was a picture of me in the first grade playing at a piano recital before a piano. All of a sudden, someone called my name. "Erin!" My father yelled. I came from a family of Ivy League school graduates and success, except me. I stood up, scrambled to find a hair brush, and brushed the tangled knots. I fled downstairs, a finger on the railing, looking down at my feet. I looked back up as I reached the bottom to see a woman. She wore a business suit, her hair neatly in a slicked-back bun. She was smiling, her mouth closed. Her eyebrows hugged her eyes strangely. "This is Mrs. Wensler; she will be your guidance counselor who will help select the proper electives you-" He breathed, his old eyes sharp on mine. "Are passionate about." That word, no. I thought—those words, motivated, passionate. My eye twitched. The comparison was like nails screeching on a chalkboard. Why can't you be like your brothers? Are you even trying? Oh, that's Erin, the useless one. They never knew, I wasn't always meaningless. Before he could finish speaking, I walked past him, folding my fingers in tight fists. Before the crescendo of side-eyes could finally break away into the main melody. Before I could even remember the last time I had felt passionate about something. After another quarter of rest, I would have been gone, but my father had stopped me. "The next step you take will decide your fate." I froze. Mrs Wensler quietly dismissed herself from the conversation. "You walk." He adjusted his glasses with his knuckle. "And you are out of the house." I grabbed a pancake from the stack on one of the plates on the table, sunk into one of the chairs of the long table, and accepted, aggressively taking a mouthful of dry pancake. The next day, I knew it had to be better. Then, I looked at it again—the picture. My mind instantly remembered that I couldn't defend myself from it any longer. That piano tore my mind to pieces. It was the only thing I would focus on. I was only about eight when all I ever wanted was to get those notes right. I had played the piano every day for what seemed like forever until it hurt. My teacher, Mrs. Larewski, didn't make it easier. I sat there looking up at her wrinkled face. Her cheeks sagged, and her eyes were always flat. She was never happy. I was playing a piece that had taken me months to prepare. I played the chords with light hops, dancing into the crescendo. But all I could focus on was her eyes. The slightest tension in her undereye and wrinkle on her nose meant I did something wrong. That would indicate she would start screaming at me. I became obsessed, and I knew it. Am I doing it right? Am I going to mess up? What if I slip? Stop it, stop it, stop it, focus, focus! My head was already spinning at the ninth measure, and all the thoughts seemed to get tangled with my focus, binding together in messy knots and thrown into the trash, where I almost lost that last piece of focus. Until that last chord. It was already pressed into the keys; It was over.
29
I blinked, realizing where I was. I breathed, got up from my bed, and changed, trying to get the image of my teacher screaming at me out of my head. Then, I hurried downstairs, through the halls, and into the piano room. I don't need that stupid counselor. I suggested. I'll find something myself. I took a step in. I stepped back behind the line, only a foot past the door. The last time I was here, I was eight. I realized that I hated that Mrs. Larewski always threatened before a deadline that she would die before I finished the piece, making me think it was my fault, and I hated myself for avoiding the room. I took a step and realized. Was it... I took a step. It couldn't have been... I stopped. I noticed Mrs. Wensler's presence. She leaned against the side of the doorframe behind me, gaze piercing my back. "Your father didn't sign you out of piano because he felt bad for you." I looked back at her. “Mrs. Larewski died.” I didn't finish the piece, my dad didn't care. My eye twitched. "How do YOU know?" I retorted, my fingers tightened, my face red. "Why do you think I'm here?" She walked off without saying anything. Rude. Mrs. Wensler's high heels clanked as they hit the floor "Well, if you're here to do something you didn't!" I yelled. The sound echoed around and through the halls, still hearing her footsteps. I pulled up my sleeves and sat down to play. My fingers began to flow like water, drifting. The chords flowed through my fingertips, scattering like tiny droplets in the keys. The elegant sound started to build and build until it dropped. A pause- then the sound ended with a single high note that soon disappeared in the air. I listened, and stared, my teary eyes watery, my mouth dropped, my face blank. Finally.

...nothing is getting better... Divide it by Two Kendall M
It’s been almost a week of being fourteen,
I want to be a kid,
I have all I could ever want and or need,
A kid who would play outside all day and use my grand imagination.
But all I truly want is to be seven again. Time flew by too fast. When I only ever stressed about the monsters under the bed,
Seven was quickly multiplied by two,
Now I am afraid of the monsters in my head.
Which doubled the amount of responsibilities big and small,
When I was seven I didn’t have to do my hair or make-up to feel pretty,
The biggest responsibility I had at seven was
When I was seven all I had to do in sports was have fun because it didn’t matter how good I was,
brushing my hair or cleaning up my toys, But now it’s so much more.
At seven I did not have to take care of anything or anyone besides my stuffed animals and my dolls,
I am supposed to feel more free at fourteen, So why do I want to go back?
When I was seven I never had to worry about an A in the grade book,
I dislike fourteen.
I only had to worry if I could color in the lines.
How about I divide it by two?
But now I’ve turned fourteen and it’s all changed, When I was younger I wished to be a teen because all the older kids were “cool”, But I learned teenagers are nothing but cruel. I wish I could go back to seven, I just don’t want to get older. So no I’m not “excited for high school” or “excited to drive”,

I wanna live today. I wanna live today. I wanna live today. Maybe then I’ll have a really, really, really, really, real good day.
The more they are used The duller they get
(spoken) You know what? Let’s not think about that right now.
I don’t know why I’m in This situation. If this is just a movie, It’s got underration. No matter how loud, No one hears my screams. Will someone just help me?
But sharpen too much And the pencil runs out Push too hard The pencil snaps Any defects Thrown away
I wanna live today. I wanna live today. Maybe then I’ll have a good day. (Instrumental)

...nothing is getting better... I Was a Timid Crybaby Kid Anonymous I was a timid crybaby kid. The looks I got while my eyes were rivers still haunt me, and always will. That nightmare. I arose out of bed like toast popping out of a toaster, and started w a l k i n g down the hall, the darkness creeping behind. Yet the light of the warm, carpeted living room held my hand like a guardian angel, or like a mother guiding her child; a mother I lack. I can hear her light whispers, saying “No need to fear the darkness, child, for I am with you. You will always feel the warmth of my tight embrace, and it shall comfort you through dark times.”
The Unfulfilled Life - Anonymous The love I don’t have The joy that I want The friends I don’t have The kindness that never lasts The perfectness that doesn’t exist The life inside of me wants to be free The feelings that I don’t feel The cut that always hurts The happiness that doesn’t stay The life of mine that gets ignored The same schedule that never changes Life is like living in a pattern always the same The time that’s always wasted The life that’s never fulfilled Life is like a dream never real The tiny things people say can lead to much bigger things The things you say can come back to haunt you It's like the words that people say are written on you The words lead to namecalling The words lead to pain The words that people say aren’t true The words that people say aren’t real The tiny things that can affect someone so much Life is unfair, cruel, and brutal But even if life can also be Hopeful, Surprising, and beautiful Life is famous for being all those things But it always turns out good No matter how depressing life can be now There are always gonna be good in the end You just have to get through the bad parts
It does. My mother has been there for me my whole life. But behind the looks that I got when they yelled at me can only see a pitiful, timid crybaby kid, all alone in this world.

It would be a long day, but it would be worth it. Right? Hi, I am Rachel. I am also the president of the 2030 class, but at least that's something. No, I can’t say that. Try again. Hi, I am Rachel. I am also the president of the class of 2030, and I can’t wait to… Come on, that’s where I get stuck every time. I just can’t… “Ray, come down and eat, please.” “Coming, Mom.” Why, at this moment, is Mom calling me for breakfast? I woke up an hour early to make my speech. I don’t even have an entire paragraph, let alone one hundred words. I wonder what’s for breakfast? What if it’s salted caramel drizzled cinnamon rolls? My favorite! What about Otis? Is he still having breakfast with his friends? “Hey honey, how are you?” “Same as always, Mom, but I’m worried about my speech.” “You’ll do great; you always do. Please tell Otis it’s time for breakfast.” “Yeah, I'm on it.” “Otis, breakfast.” “Okay, I'm coming, Ray.” “Otis, how are you doing since, you know?” “Since Dad died. I’m just taking it all in.” “Okay, let me know if you need anything.” Hello everybody, I am Rachel. As most of you know, I am also the president of the 2030 class. I have high hopes for all students going to Six Flags tomorrow behavior-wise, but that’s not what is essential right now. As a class, as a school, and as a community, we will come together to represent our small town. We live in a world that needs a new tomorrow from me, you, your parents, and even your family that you only meet at gatherings. Everyone is needed to make the sunshine and the world spin. Come give back to our school by being yourself and embracing it. Always know you have a second home to come back to. Never wish to rewrite the stars.” What am I thinking? This has nothing to do with our ice cream party for high scores on state testing or the new anti-anxiety fidgets. “For all of our hard work on state testing, we will have an ice cream party, and for students with higher levels of anxiety, we have some teacher-approved fidgets to use throughout the school day. Thank you for listening, and have a great day.”

But at this moment, I felt radiant. I was beaming with joy like when a toddler gets a new toy, And the spotlight was on me.

But what does this mean for me?

Where do I belong now? Maybe I’ll have the spotlight with the rock band.
To make this janky camp even worse, We were forced to watch a neighboring rock band camp practice and perform.
That is to be answered When I return. Or maybe, Just maybe, I’ll still be stuck on the beats of that drum.
Thankfully, that menace Gianna had to leave for a family trip or something, so it was slightly enjoyable.
Dat da-da dat dat. Then, like a light switch being turned on, the rock band asked us if we wanted to be the lead singer for “We Will Rock You.” Be the lead singer. Be in the spotlight. This was my chance. There was another girl, Chantal but she was too shy.

Poor Sportsmanship: Why Winners Can’t Enjoy Their Hard-Earned Wins Natalie S
Also known as a sore loser, poor sportsmanship is sometimes part of the game. A game wouldn’t be fun, or a game if everyone was a winner. If your team has no losses, then that's awesome. You should give yourself a pat on the back. But winners, ask yourself two questions: 1. Is it hard to enjoy a victory with the other team spitting complaints at your team? 2. Is your team like that when you lose? Poor sportsmanship is hard to take, but it's part of the game. Now, if the other team is cursing at you just because they lost, or are losing in the game, that's a problem. Sometimes the winning team is celebrating their hard-earned victory and then the losing team starts complaining REALLY LOUDLY how they should have won. This makes the team that won really sad. It makes it hard for them to be happy when the other team is like “We should have won. They totally cheated.” Now, if the other team did cheat and called an in an out, or called their out in, that's bad. I’ve seen this happen before. I was playing a fun game of Nuke ‘Em on the third to last day of school. Just by rock, paper, scissors the team I was on made it to the “Championship”. The other team made it so they won. Well to wrap it all up, poor sportsmanship is part of the game and it's probably a good idea to learn to deal with it. Thanks for reading this story!

...you can never, ever, be torn apart... The Time I Had A Nosebleed Anonymous
I hope I don't have a nosebleed again to make this day two of another nosebleed. I walk to the bus stop. As I walked to my bus stop, the wind was relaxing and calming. I sat down in front of a tree. I touch the bark of the tree. It was like sand under my hand. And I was calm and all of a sudden “Lilah come here!” Preston yelled. “Oh no not again,” I whispered to myself. The bus comes, I go on the bus, and a big wind hits my face. The old dusty bus and it was vibrating like it was about to move. The sounds were vibrations. I didn’t feel as calm on the bus as I was outside. I sit in the seat that I was assigned. So did Preston. The bus started moving once everyone sat down. “Preston, please stop singing the FNAF song” I declared. “No, I will not stop singing the song.” Preston snapped. “Preston, please stop singing it is so annoying to hear you sing the song.” Riley snarled. “No, I will not listen to both of you!” Preston snapped. Charlie hits Preston in the head hard bonk. “Ow Charlie, you will pay!” Preston yelled. “No, stop. Preston, you leave her be.” I breathe in so I can calm down and not yell. I smelled something bad and my nose hurt a lot. The smell just got worse and worse until I could not handle it. My nose felt funny like water was going down my nose, but very slowly. And that’s when I knew but it was going to be too late. “Preston, I think I have a nosebleed." I worriedly answered. My friends yell to the bus driver that I have a nosebleed. After they told the bus driver, I blocked out everyone's voices so I won’t freak out and worry. I put my head down so I can see right. The blood got on my hand and started dripping off of my hand. It got really messy really fast. It got on the seat, fell to the floor and I could not stop the bleeding. I tried to stop the bleeding but it would still not stop. So I didn't think of it as a bad thing or a good thing and I pretended that I was in the water, and a shark was trying to get me, like I was in the water getting away from the shark I got on a ship. And a person helped me kill the shark and I was safe. They took care of my wounds. I talked to the captain and told them that I would stay with them until I found my ship. I found my ship and the captain asked if I was ok, and I told them I was just fine. But what really happened in real life was this: By the time we got to the school, I had to get off the bus and go to the nurse’s office. The nurse helped me and I sat on a bed. And the nurse put a trash can near me so I wouldn't bleed everywhere. I hung my head over the trash can. I changed my napkin. The nurse helped me change the napkin. It won’t have trouble changing it. My nose finally stopped bleeding after an hour. I felt so much better. And I could finally not hold a piece of paper to my nose anymore. My nose hurt after a while when I held the piece of paper. My hand hurt, my nose hurt.
45
I felt a little dizzy like the world was spinning. And I felt like I was going to fall but I focused, and I calmed myself down. The nurse gave me water to drink and the water helped me feel a lot better. I washed my face in the bathroom, and the water on my face felt refreshing and got rid of the rest of the blood on my face. The water helps me be refreshed and calm. I was being gentle to my nose so I won't have another nose bleed. My nose hurt and I couldn't smell anything for a while. But all I smelled was iron and blood. I went to class. Mrs. Hicks worriedly inquired, “What happened?” “I had a nosebleed again,” I replied, “But I'm ok, don't worry.”

...you can never, ever, be torn apart... Finding the Filth of ‘05 Violet C
Throw me into the ocean; I would like to feel something. Except I'd complain on the subway unless if we catch an open window on the train car. I think that was only a thing in London, though. There'd be sand in my shoes, and I would be freezing and full of salt water. It's like, what? An hour away from Brooklyn? We'd have to grab a seat because I would complain about standing up anyway. And it would be difficult to share headphones like that because we use cords, I'd complain about that, too, yet it sounds so much better in cassette form. So, I guess, we should go. Catch the next one, Put on Room on Fire or The Velvet Underground, You really are a tourist at heart, huh? And you've been here for what? Like six months? Why have you not realized it's not as grand as they make it out to be? CBGB's shutdown, and every other gig's a social media stunt. What exactly did you expect when you left Rhode Island? You crave a torn-up scene, Left for the outsiders and atheists.
Some cosmic business that wants somebody to want "someday" 's that won't happen. Just don't waste any more time. I've learned the hard way to listen, but not to myself. Learn that, too. Learn better influences, Copy them if you like. Just don't sound like every other indie band trying to find the filth of the '05. Oh, I can't win. See, that's how you do it. And we now we're off at the last stop.
47
Get home, Put on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs And the song that recently resurged came on. We listened carefully to those ten words before anyone on the streets even knew of the song, Yet they don't even know what the title stands for. Nothing in the fridge, but that's the aesthetic you dreamed of People in and out of the place But you hate to socialize, So why focus on the lifestyle of dreams when it isn't the lifestyle you live? Take a nap at six to stay up till that same hour. Try our luck at the first place, Are they really playing a cover? That's not what we're looking for And we should have just left after we noticed there wasn't a mirrorball. Next one, Another cover band, At least they have good taste, But it's filled with less than twenty people And it just sounds like they're trying too hard Well, it's already two, so we'll stop at one more. Walk in after twelve blocks It better be worth it, But as we peer at the rugged Converse and glass shards on the floor, The jean jackets with holes in the elbow and leather jackets from second-hand stores, Then, finally, up to the band capturing the unexplainable feeling that's impossible to grasp until you hear the right chords, Knowing that this was the right feeling: The one that's only found as a reward after searching for the aromas of an ideal Saturday night, Well, a Sunday morning. My, isn't it a perfect start to the week of October 9th?
Diary of a New Kid -
Tuesday, August 16th, 2024, Violet K Dear Diary, The Spark of HopeI know it’s been a little while since I last wrote to you, but I feel like now is as Heidi K important a time as ever to write down all of my feelings. You see, tomorrow is my first day of eighth grade at Bridgeport Middle School. I’ll be a new kid. I’m not quite sure how to feel yet“Elise, dinner!” My mother’s voice calls. I smelled my mother’s homemade lasagna as I dashed downstairs to the dining room for dinner. During dinner, my parents were talking to me and my younger sister, Lizzy, about how proud of us they were that we were able to change schools and make new friends so that way my mother could take care of our Aunt Tilly, who was a nurse and had gotten some chronic sickness (Mama wanted to move closer to Aunt Tilly just in case we needed to help with her daughters. Aunt Tilly is doing a lot better now) along with our father accepting a promotion. I, however, didn’t hear much of this talk tonight as my mind was buzzing with nerves and excitement. After dinner, I got ready for bed, hoping that the kids at Bridgeport Middle School would be nice. Wednesday, August 17th, 2024, “Do you need anything else?” I asked Lizzy as I dropped her off at her locker in the sixth-grade hallway. “I’ve got it from here. Love you. See you at lunch!” Lizzy announced. I responded similarly and watched as her two dirty blonde braids disappeared into her homeroom. “Miss Mayor,” A middle-aged brunette woman wearing all red said, “My name is Ms. Sanders, vice principal of student interactions here at Bridgeport Middle School, and this is Joan Acer and Diana Archer, they will help you learn the ropes of our wonderful school.” I must have looked toward Lizzy’s homeroom because Ms. Sanders said, “Don’t worry, your sister also has guides helping her.” As soon as Ms. Sanders left, I decided to start a conversation with my guides. Joan had short, jetblack hair, and was wearing black nail polish to match the rest of her outfit. Diana had flaming red hair that had light waves and was wearing green and black with purple nail polish. They were super nice. I had lunch with Diana but not with Joan. In my classes, I met a girl with a Regina George aesthetic, but a sweet personality named Martha (though Joan claims she’s really mean), a sweet girl named Kendra (who’s apparently best friends with Martha), and a REALLY sweet boy named Jayce. All in all, my first day here at Bridgeport Middle School was pretty successful. Thursday, September 12th, 2024, Dear Diary, School has been going GREAT! At lunch, I sit with these girls named Diana, Joanna, Felicity, Ellie, and Kendra. I see Lizzy every day at lunch, she seems to have a decent group of friends also. I feel bad for Joan because she has to sit at the same table as Martha, who does seem to be kind of mean. Today in Literature, Jayce complimented my French braid and I told Kendra that it really made my day. Joan says that I shouldn’t trust Kendra because she’s “best friends” with Martha. But Kendra claims that she gets a new best friend every year and that this year it’s Felicity, so I don’t know-

...you can never, ever, be torn apart... “Elise!” I hear Mama shout out to me, “That was Mrs. Acer from down the block. She was wondering if you wanted to hang out with her daughter, Joan, this weekend.” “I would LOVE that!” I answer, glad to finally hang out with my friends outside of school. Tuesday, October 8th, 2024, Dear Diary, I fear that Joan, Diana, and Kendra are right… I DO have a crush on Jayce. But, who could blame me, he’s so kind, and nice, and funny, and sweet, and kind, and smart, and kind, and“Are you in love?” The voice of Lizzy taunted me, “Because it’s pretty obvious!” “If I say yes and it’s a boy named Jayce, you CANNOT make fun of me for it!” I insisted. “Don’t worry about that.” Lizzy exclaimed, “Because I like a boy in my Hope math class named James.” Ms. Katherine Braun Monday, February 3rd, 2025, Dear Diary, I DID IT!!! I CONFESSED!!! TO JAYCE!!! HE FEELS THE SAME WAY!!! Today is officially the BEST day ever. I’m starting to think I finally fit in. “Tell me more about your new boyfriend, Elise,” Mama whispered in my ear, “Is he nice?’’ “Yes, Mama.” I assured her, “And his name is Jayce.” Friday, March 7th, 2025, Dear Diary, Today I went to Starbucks with Jayce! And Diana and Joanna and Jayce’s friends, Johnny and Nate! Anyways, Jayce and I held hands“How was your date honey?” Mama asked me. “It wasn’t really a date, more of a get-together,” I pointed out, “But it was great.” Mama chuckled then followed up with “Glad to hear Elise.” Mama then left the room. Friday May 16th, 2025, Dear Diary, What I Carry I cannot believe that I am about to graduate eighth Hylie W grade and move on to high school. I no longer feel like I’m just some new kid at Bridgeport Middle School. I have amazing friends, and grades, and hope that they will stay. I feel that I’ve found my place here. I’ve learned so much, including that being kind to others will get you far and that new opportunities are always arising, so don’t be afraid to try new things and walk into everything with a positive attitude and a kind heart. Love, Elise

Jazzy Days Violet K
Every Monday ‘round seven o’clock, Out the car, and into school I walk, With an alto saxophone in hand, I start to make my way to Jazz Band. Taking out my saxophone, Helps me musically as I hone, All of my skills from sax playing, To clarinet playing, to everything, Inbetween. These are my Jazzy Days. And once again I’m lost, Book Spine PoetryIn the band’s playing that others might consider as squeaks and squawks, Giuliana R But I consider, playing with this band to be such a pleasure, To help make this musical treasure, On these Jazzy Days. And maybe, we play one or two wrong notes, But being there is fun that’s measured in loads, During these Jazzy Days. Don’t get me wrong, we sound GREAT, Even if we enter late, It’s such a bliss And our music can be a chef’s kiss, On these Jazzy Days. These Jazzy Days are days of reflection, These Jazzy Days of moments of Joy and Happiness, I’m very grateful for these Jazzy Days, ‘Cause, these Jazzy Days have shaped me, I am who I am partially because of these, Jazzy Days.

Untitled Mr. Paul “Kemo” Kim The world is vast, the path unknown. But within you lies a seed that's sown. A spark of light, a dream to grow, A place where endless rivers flow. Each day you rise, a chance brand new, To build, to shape, to see it through. Mistakes may come, and doubts may call, But courage stands to face them all. The books you read, the steps you take Are bricks of wisdom you will make. Your teachers guide and may inspire, Together you’ll climb even higher. Remember, storms may cloud the skies But after the rain, the rainbow flies. With every trial, your strength is built And dreams will bloom where hope is tilled

Fully Exposed -
Ms. Katherine Braun
I thought I had killed So, I gathered my shovel the miniature orange-red rose plant and despondent rose that had caught my eye and in my yard dug last week in the floral aisle. a six-inch hole. Its buds’ ombre petals, once reminiscent I lowered my rose of dancing flames, into the ground, of streaks across a sunset sky, said my good-byes, began to turn brown, wither, and die. and packed the soil down. Decaying potential may be the most underrated tragedy. My rose was watered, its soil moist; my rose resided near a window in indirect light. I had read the directions and followed them all, but more and more barely opened buds began to fall. Unwilling to give up, I continued my regime as though sheer persistence would fix everything. Yet, no matter how many times you try turning a key in a lock, the door won’t open if one ridge or notch matches not. By every calculation, that rose should have grown, safe and secure inside my home, and yet here was blatant proof that life never goes as you expect it to.
Heaven started weeping warm summer tears as I walked back inside– fully exposed, my rose plant and I.
No, she wasn’t protected from hardship but nor was she hidden from the magic of a rainbow, from the relief of a gentle breeze, from the calm that follows calamity. She experienced it all, raw and real. And perhaps that’s why after three weeks, a new bud had the courage to emerge,
The next day, I went back to remove for without the dark, we would never seek light. the dead buds and partial blooms that my rose refused to release, hoping to help make peace with the past, let go of the old, and make room for new growth. The rest of the week brought no visible change. Yet, I watched as my rose held its ground, withstanding a thunderstorm and pelting rain, the harsh humid heat of a hundred-degree day, and a menacing wind that took my breath away. She wasn’t protected; she had no shelter nor shield. She experienced it all, raw and real.

Letters of Fate Yasmeen A
I have been writing more and more ever since I got my letter, the letter that decides our future, our fate. It started a while ago when a kid got a letter assigning him a future career path. He didn't like the suggestions and ignored the letter. No one ever saw him again. It has been fifteen years, and everyone follows the letters now. My letter mentioned writing and poetry. I have become quite good at writing; people said I could work for the mayor if I keep up the good work. Working for the mayor has been my dream ever since I was a little kid. "Wake up, Sophie! Wake up!" my little sister shouted. I groaned and stared at her beaming face, "What is it, Ella?" I grumbled. She dashed into the kitchen and waved a letter in my face. I took it from her hands and read it. It was from the mayor. My eyes could have popped out of my head! He wanted to interview me for a position in his office! I squealed and showed Mother, she was so excited! The interview was next week. So soon! I spent some days writing formally, and other days I wrote poetry. I wanted to show the mayor both sides of my writing. I picked out my finest clothes to wear. Most people congratulated me, but some were concerned about a sixteen-year-old working for the mayor. I ignored the disbelievers and focused on my writing. The day arrived too soon, but I was ready. As I walked into the office, I noticed the neat stack of notebooks on his desk and the comfy-looking furniture. The room smelled like vanilla. The mayor greeted me with a warm smile and handshake. He greeted my mother and showed her where to sit outside. He started the interview by asking basic questions like my age and how long I had been writing. Then, I showed him the writing examples I had worked on. He preferred formal writing, which was fine, but he also liked my poems. He also asked me what I thought about the letters. He said that he loved them and wished that they had existed sooner. "I agree," I replied reluctantly, even though they have cost people their lives. The interview ended with another handshake. I exited the room and embraced my mother. She was in tears on the way home. She treated my sister and me to ice cream. I told them all about the interview and the mayor's kindness. Even if I didn't get the job, I was happy to have met him. The next day, I visited the library. I wanted to research the mayor to get to know him better. I found a couple of books about him. Some of the books mentioned his son. Interesting, I never knew he had a son. The books also mentioned his tragic disappearance. Wait, what if his son was the boy that disappeared fifteen years ago? No, it couldn't be. Why would the mayor support the letter system if his son vanished after receiving one? Once I got home, I asked Mother about this mysterious son. She informed me that she knew the mayor had a son but did not know if my inference was correct. She suggested asking the mayor. Later that day, I entered the town hall and knocked on the door of the mayor's office. "Who is it?" he asked. "It's Sophie. You interviewed me a couple of days ago," I answered, eager to get some answers.
54
...you can never, ever, be torn apart... "Ah yes, come in, Sophie," he replied. I told him all about the books and my inference. He sat there the whole time, listening to every word. I could tell that my guess was correct by the surprised expression on his face. He asked me to sit outside as he talked to the lady at the front desk. She nodded and walked over to me. "I'm sorry, sweetie, but you need to leave," the lady said quietly. "Why? Did I do something wrong?" I asked, hoping that I wasn't in trouble. She had an unpleasant expression on her face. I could tell she had no patience to argue, so I left. The next day, there was an announcement that the mayor was resigning. I also got a letter saying that someone else got the writing position. Although the mystery of the mayor's son remained unsolved, everyone was free of the letters from then on and could choose their future. Subheading
