Ms. Beverly Fiore arrived at Lisle in the fall of 1969. She taught speech, debate and film but her heart was in theatre. In her distinguished teaching career, Ms. Fiore directed over 50 productions. In 1973, while the new high school building opened on Short Street, the theatre productions were still held at the Junior High in the auditorium, requiring a great deal of commuting for after school practices. Many of the productions she directed ran for two weekends due to the popularity of the show. Ms. Fiore was very popular as a teacher. She was a member of the Illinois High School Theatre Festival Board for four years and founded the Thespian Troupe at Lisle High School. She was also involved in the AFS program as well as serving as the Ski Club sponsor. Words often used to describe Ms. Fiore by her former students are dedicated, funny, tough and caring. The outpouring of support from her former students was such that the Carlin Nalley Foundation named an annual scholarship after her. Every year, the thespians at Lisle select an outstanding senior through an established process. Beginning in 2012, the foundation began providing a scholarship for the winner in the name of Beverly Fiore.
It is hard to be more involved in high school than Amanda Grumbles was in the late 1990’s. She played basketball for four years, competed in volleyball, track & field and was a member of the National Honor Society. Her true passion, however, was music, specifically band. She was a member of the Lisle Band for four years, which included three years playing in the Musical Pit Band and four years as a member of the Lisle Jazz Band. Her success was such that she participated in the AllDistrict Band and All-State band her senior year. She was a member of the Interstate 8 Conference Honor Band her junior & senior year and was the featured soloist her senior year. Amanda also participated in the highly prestigious Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Program. She went on to major in French Horn Performance at Indiana University and obtained her Masters Degree in Performance from DePaul University.
Pete Mastandrea exemplified the Lisle multisport athlete in the mid-1970’s. He excelled in four sports: football, basketball, baseball and track & field. He was a three time all-conference baseball player, two time all-conference basketball player and an all-conference football player in 1973. In track & field, he was conference champion of the 440 relay and the 880 relay in 1974. He was also recognized by the Suburban Life as an all-area football and basketball player and became one of the few Lisle All-State football players. Pete was the basketball team’s leading scorer, setting a school record 37 points in one game as a senior. After graduating from Lisle, Pete went on to find more athletic success at neighboring Benedictine University in football and baseball.
Dr. Mulcare served at Lisle High School from 1965-1993. Prior to coming to Lisle, he had served in the United States Army for two years and worked in chemical sales for Standard Oil for five years. At Lisle, he taught Chemistry and Physical Science. He was ultimately named the Science Department Head and served as the National Honor Society sponsor until his retirement. Outside of the science lab, Dr. Mulcare served as a class sponsor, the Science Club advisor and as an assistant drama director. In fact, Dr. Mulcare even performed in a few Lisle musicals and plays. Strong support from Dr. Mulcare’s former students was such that the Carlin Nalley Foundation named an annual scholarship after him. Every year, the outstanding Science senior at Lisle is selected through an established process. Beginning in 2014, the foundation began providing a scholarship for the winner in the name of Dr. John Mulcare.
Marty Wilson excelled beyond the norm in two sports, football and wrestling in his time at Lisle High School. In football, Marty played four years, was voted allconference for three of those years and all-area his senior year. After graduating from Lisle, Marty went on to play football at Northern Illinois University. It was in wrestling, however, where Marty made history. He competed in wrestling all four years at Lisle and was named allconference in his junior and senior years. Also, in his junior year, he finished third in the state wrestling meet. In his senior year, he finished as a state champion, winning the 275 pound division. Marty had a big personality and was widely recognized as one of the best athletes of his era. He was awarded the Brian Piccolo Award by the Carlin Nalley Foundation. The Piccolo Award is given to outstanding male senior athletes at Lisle High School.
