Carbon Reduction Annual Report 2024/25

Introduction The Housing Network (THN) is committed to achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2050. THN is dedicated to continually reducing its carbon footprint through operational improvements, fleet efficiencies, energy management, and sustainable travel practices. We recognise our responsibility to minimise emissions arising from our services and are actively developing a long-term roadmap to reduce carbon year-on-year.

Understanding where we are Our journey begins with understanding our current position. For the 2024/25 financial year, we have carefully measured our total emissions using established methodologies. Our assessment considers all three Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission scopes, including a defined initial set of Scope 3 emissions: Scope 1: Direct emissions (e.g. fleet vehicles, organisational offices). Scope 2: Indirect emissions (e.g. purchased utilities and refrigerants). Scope 3: Defined and measurable indirect emissions (e.g. train and air travel). Following a thorough review of internal records and using the Carbon Trust SME Carbon Footprint Calculator, we have identified a total tCO2e of 542. This increase from last year is due to growth across our organisation, including more residents, expanded operational areas, additional staff, and increased resources. Our defined Scope 3 emissions continue to focus on organisational travel and air travel as a manageable sample of broader supply chain impacts. Over the coming years, we will expand measurement across more Scope 3 categories.

Our baseline position Our baseline emissions (145.6 tC02e) are recorded for the financial year 1 April 2022 – 31 March 2023, and form the reference point against which we will measure our progress; this is calculated as 36.4kg per resident. Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Emissions Reduction Target The Housing Network is committed to: Short-Term Target (by 2030): Reduce total emissions by 25% from baseline. Medium-Term Target (by 2035): Reduce total emissions by 40% through fleet decarbonisation and energy efficiency. Long-Term Target (Net Zero by 2050): Achieve Net Zero across Scopes 1, 2, and required Scope 3 categories. Progress will be reported annually.

Carbon Reduction Initiatives THN has already implemented or plans to implement the following measures: Fleet & Travel Introducing lower-emission vehicle options and exploring electric vehicle trials. Optimising fleet routes to reduce fuel usage. Training staff in eco-driving techniques. Reducing non-essential travel and increasing use of remote meetings. Increased use of public transport where operationally viable. Energy Efficiency Optimising electricity use across office sites. Continuing to procure energy-efficient equipment. Exploring renewable energy options where feasible. Operational Practices Enhanced monitoring of fuel and electricity consumption. Staff awareness campaigns focusing on sustainability. Incorporation of carbon considerations into procurement. These measures are expected to deliver incremental annual reductions and support long-term decarbonisation.

Summary The Housing Network (THN) is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting environmental sustainability across all operations. This plan sets out THN’s current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including energy use, fleet operations, and other key activities, and identifies priority areas for reduction. Key initiatives include improving energy efficiency in properties, transitioning to lowemission vehicles, and embedding sustainable practices in procurement and daily operations. THN has established measurable targets to track progress and ensure accountability, with regular monitoring and reporting to demonstrate tangible reductions. Through this plan, THN aims to reduce environmental impact, support a sustainable future for the communities it serves, and align with national and international climate objectives.

The increase in overall total tCO₂e emissions recorded between 2024 and 2025 can be largely attributed to the continued growth of The Housing Network across the UK. Reflecting the need to invest in the increase of key central and enabling resources and functions ahead of growth being fully realised, in order to ensure sustainable and high-quality growth across future years. While this has contributed to an increase in absolute emissions, this is very much seen as a short term increase in the 'per resident tCOce value, which will be reduced as further expansion and growth is realised. We remain focused on improving efficiency and reducing emissions relative to our operational footprint as the organisation continues to grow.
