Design User Research

Interviews 1. Pre-Covid-19 Lockdown a.

What mode of transportation did you use and why?

2. During the Lockdown a.

What has changed in your behaviour due to the lockdown?

3. Post Covid-19 Lockdown a.

If there is one thing you could control, what would it be?

Highlights “Just touch as little as possible, carry wipes with me, On return, take shoes off, wash hands, clean my phone with wipes.” “No, because I don't trust that the people will listen and follow the rules” “I don't want to use any public transport I'd rather walk due to safety and I actually don’t really travel.” “I wasn’t able to get on the bus because it was too crowded (15 people) and so I arrived late for work” “No I don’t feel like it’s safe enough, there are too many people on public transport and it seems more dangerous, especially because it’s a closed space.”

On field research

Research Insights 1. Hesitant to interact with people 2. Avoiding physical touchpoints 3. Concerned about crowd control

Problem Statement

How might we provide a safe, accurate and easy to use system of information dissemination with respect to accessing public transport and travelling safely in a post Covid-19 world for the elderly?

Target user Analysis

User Persona About Was born in Guildford and moved to London when she was very young. She has been retired for 9 years. She got married at a young age and has a daughter.

Audrey Age: 74 Job: retired Family: Daughter and grandchildren City: London

She became a widow three years ago and currently lives alone. She moved recently, so is still not that familiar with her new neighborhood. She takes the bus occasionally to go to visit her daughter and to the hospital. Both buses stop close to her house, but she still needs to cross the street to get there.

Motivations ● ●

Get on time to the doctor’s appointment Occasionally visiting her daughter

Frustrations ● ●

Stroke from 5 years ago causes trembling in her right hand Difficult to get information on public transportation routes by herself, and doesn’t want to rely too much on her family

Use of technology ● ●

Has a mobile phone, but only uses it to call or video chat her family. Finds it difficult to type and select things on a touchscreen because of her trembling right hand

Empathy map THINK AND FEEL Hope that the bus arriving is clean and sanitized. Hope that I don’t have to stand for too long waiting at the bus stop. Feels anxious and worried.

HEAR That people complain about the frequency of the buses

SEE That the bus driver won’t allow any more passengers to get on, because it has already reached the maximum safe capacity. That many people at the stop have waited for a long time, but still didn’t manage to take the bus.

SAY AND DO Before leaving home, check the routes to see if she can get there. Check the schedules before going to the stop. When she waits at the bus stop, she looks at the information panels but does not understand them

Interaction Format Through the analysis of our target user, we have been exploring different types of interactions in order to make the user experience easier and more accessible. We explored common best practices in accessibility, such as improving the readability of the screens, alternative methods of input and various assistive technologies.
