A MESSAGE FROM TEAM LION

Protection isn’t just delivered — it’s designed into everything we do.

At LION, our mission has always been to protect those who protect others. As LION broadens its mission with EN 469-certified turnout gear, we reaffirm our commitment to equipping firefighters and first responders with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with the highest standards of safety, performance, and trust.

The LION PPE line is more than gear—it’s a shield built for action. Designed to endure the toughest conditions, it delivers protection, comfort, and mobility where they matter most. Every detail, from advanced thermal barriers to integrated safety features, reflects our dedication to safeguarding lives in the heat of unpredictable environments.

Our principle is clear: readiness saves lives. Every stitch, every layer, and every certification stands for reliability in the most critical moments. Whether it’s structural firefighting or wildland response, LION turnout gear is built to keep you moving forward with confidence.

As you discover our PPE portfolio, remember that readiness isn’t optional. It is the foundation of safety, trust, and performance.

Team LION

OUR CORE BELIEFS

EXPECTING NOTHING SHORT OF EXCELLENCE

We understand that exceeding our customers’ expectations demands leadership, diligent planning, skillful organizing, rapid decision making, training and having the right tools. This is how we consistently and reliably achieve flawless execution.

LEARNING FROM EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING

We value curiosity and strong personal initiative in the pursuit of understanding our customers’ needs and exceeding them. We harness diverse points of view and even conflict as useful sources of leaning, innovation and continuous improvement.

BUILDING A LEGACY

Founded in 1898 by William Lapedes and his mother Rebecca, LION has developed an unyielding drive to protect those who protect us. After becoming a trusted supplier of firefighter station uniforms, we realized the need for advanced Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that would protect first responders as they continued to put their lives on the line in increasingly dangerous emergency situations daily. LION responded to the call for action to provide the very best gear for firefighters and first responders.

Today, this dedication to fire safety extends beyond PPE gear to comprehensive training solutions. Our focus on safety comes forward in our work with departments of all sizes, including volunteers, to ensure that all first responders have access to the best equipment and training. Our products are designed to empower first responders in every aspect of their duties. While remaining a family business, we have the organizational and financial resources to execute some of the largest uniform, personal equipment management contracts and training projects in the world, as well as the flexibility to tailor them to our customers’ expectations.

The original wagon,

OUR PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

At LION, we are committed to continuous innovation, collaborating closely to meet the evolving needs of firefighters and first responders with honesty and transparency. Our goal is to deliver quality products that support first responders in their critical roles.

Our training solutions are not one-size-fits-all; they are tailored to meet the unique needs of each organization and are advanced in their approach. LION is one of the few companies in our industry with dedicated staff conducting fundamental research, ensuring that our solutions are effective and safe.

LION is big enough to deliver on the largest contracts but small enough to care that every emergency responder and firefighter that uses our equipment gets the features they need to be safe and successful on every call. LION is the largest provider of training equipment and facilities for first responders, having built some of the largest first responder training facilities in the world.

BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER

At LION, protection goes beyond the call. Before, during, and after every operation, we stand with first responders through innovation, service, and care that lasts. Over the years, LION has established a worldwide reputation for creating and producing high-quality training equipment and gear that deliver reliable support over the long term.

LION TotalCare ensures safety and performance through comprehensive maintenance, expert aftercare, and ongoing support. Preventative services reduce downtime, protect users, and enhance training with tailored guidance and flexible rental or leasing options, keeping you ready for every challenge.

On the PPE side, Firefighters face more than flames—soot, toxins, and carcinogens can remain trapped deep inside turnout gear. Liquid CO₂ cleaning is the next generation of PPE maintenance: using pressurized carbon dioxide, it penetrates every layer to remove harmful residues that water and detergents can’t reach—without heat, friction, or fabric damage.

WHY PROFESSIONALS CHOOSE LION

Our turnout gear and HazMat/CBRN solutions might sound new to some in the EMEA and APAC markets, but they are built on decades of global expertise. In the US, LION has long provided firefighters and first responders with trusted protective gear, supported by proven performance, certifications, and recommendations from the field.

Today, these product lines are managed directly by our European headquarters to ensure seamless implementation and support across EMEA and APAC. We stand firmly behind the innovation, reliability, and quality of our PPE. Our certified turnout gear delivers protection, comfort, and mobility where it matters most, while our HazMat/CBRN ensembles are designed to safeguard against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. Both are reinforced by strict local certifications and testing, guaranteeing that every solution meets the highest safety standards.

Because work safety is inseparable from physical and mental comfort, our gear is designed to reduce heat stress, maintain visibility, and support unrestricted movement—so professionals can stay focused on the mission, not the limitations of their equipment.

BATTLE HEAT STRESS

For firefighters, heat is the enemy that never rests. Maintaining the right body temperature is essential for focus, reaction time, and effectiveness on the fireground. Even a slight increase in core temperature—rising from 37.5 °C to 37.7 °C—can impair reaction speed and compromise the ability to detect vital visual and auditory signals. At that point, heat exhaustion begins to set in, putting both the firefighter and their team at risk.

That is why heat stress management is one of the most critical feature that high-quality PPE must deliver. At LION, our turnout gear and HazMat/CBRN ensembles are designed as the firefighter’s second skin—gear that shields against flames, contaminants, and, above all, the dangerous effects of heat stress. By using advanced fabrics, ergonomic design, and targeted reinforcements, LION PPE ensures that protection never comes at the cost of mobility or comfort.

AS ONE FIREFIGHTER PUT IT:
If I can’t move, I can’t do my job safely. Gear must allow a full range of motion.

From crawling through confined spaces to climbing ladders and advancing hoses, PPE must move with the body. A suit that is too big or too small works against you—snagging, restricting, or leaving dangerous gaps— instead of working for you.

Trust is also fundamental. “Before I can protect others, I need to trust that my gear will protect me.” Every layer, from outer shell to thermal barrier, is engineered to support that trust—providing consistent protection, breathability, and durability under the most extreme conditions.

With LION PPE, firefighters can face their toughest enemy—heat—with gear that helps them fight longer, safer, and with confidence.

RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT & DESIGN

BENEFIT FROM LION’S QUALITY PROCESS

Throughout its 125-year history, LION has dedicated itself to providing quality products and services that protect first responders. To meet the highest standards possible, LION has spent the expense and effort to achieve and maintain ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications—proof of our commitment not only to product quality but also to environmental responsibility.

A REAL COMMITMENT TO QUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY CONSISTANCY, RELIABILITY & RESPONSILIBITY

ISO 9001 focuses on the highest quality in product development, manufacturing, and customer service, while ISO 14001 drives us to minimize environmental impact throughout our operations. These certifications ensure that LION’s protective clothing is designed and produced under strict quality controls. At the same time, our processes remain environmentally conscious—reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and supporting the long-term health of the communities we serve.

ISO 9001 certification requires that every step of our design and manufacturing process be formally documented and continuously improved, guaranteeing consistency and reliability in every garment. At the same time, ISO 14001 requires us to monitor and improve the environmental impact of these processes, ensuring that our commitment to protecting lives extends to protecting the planet. From sourcing sustainable materials to optimizing production, our approach integrates safety, performance, and responsibility in equal measure.

RESPONSIVE TO CUSTOMER CONCERNS

ISO standards also demand accountability. At LION, a dedicated Quality Review Board regularly reviews customer feedback and assigns responsibility to investigate, resolve, and learn from each concern. Our suppliers are also held to documented quality and environmental criteria, ensuring that every component of our PPE contributes to the same standards of excellence. This continuous feedback loop not only enhances customer trust but also drives our innovation and sustainability strategy forward.

DISCLAIMER

Protective clothing is only practical when worn correctly and as part of a complete ensemble. Turnout gear should never be worn without proper training, nor without all protective elements in place. CBRN ensembles provide no protection against flames and only limited protection against abrasion, puncture, bodily fluids, other liquids, and gases. Structural firefighting gear offers limited protection against heat, flames, and hazardous exposures but cannot eliminate all risks of injury, heat stress, or contamination.

No PPE product—including garments, footwear, or handwear—can provide absolute protection, even when new. Protective performance will naturally decline with wear, tear, abrasion, and exposure over time. Users must follow proper inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and retirement protocols to ensure ongoing safety.

STRUCTURAL GEAR

FIT FOR THE FIGHT

MATCHING GEAR TO TACTICS FOR OPTIMAL SAFETY

Choosing the right fire protective clothing is no small feat. It requires a deep dive into the specific needs of your fire department. Comparing NFPA 1971 and EN 469 certified turnout gear is like comparing apples to oranges. Each standard represents different firefighting tactics and community risk assessments from different regions.

Both NFPA and EN 469 standards deliver the highest levels of firefighter protection, each designed for distinct operational needs and environments. NFPA-certified gear supports intensive interior and highheat operations typical in North America, while EN 469-certified gear focuses on extended wear, breathability, and versatility for diverse European conditions.

The NFPA standard defines one level

of protection for structural firefighting, complemented by other NFPA standards for Wildland, Technical Rescue, and EMS. In contrast, EN 469 features two protection levels: Level 1 for exterior firefighting and support activities, and Level 2 for interior fire attacks. Additional letter ratings: X for heat transfer, Y for water resistance, and Z for breathability, help specify performance.

NFPA and EN standards share the same goal: firefighter safety, but follow different approaches shaped by regional needs, environments, and tactics.

Selecting the right gear requires a community risk assessment that considers local hazards, response tactics, and environmental conditions. Aligning PPE with operational strategy ensures firefighters receive optimal safety and performance on every call.

RISK ASSESSMENT: KEY CONSIDERATIONS

ۘ Approach to Firefighting: Offensive or defensive

ۘ Duties Performed:

Ventilation, search and rescue, forcible entry, surround and protect

ۘ Frequency of Use: How often each gear element is used

ۘ Geographic Location: Climate and terrain

ۘ Incident Operations: Types of emergencies encountered

ۘ Care and Maintenance: Cleaning and repair frequency

Aligning your turnout gear with your department’s risk assessment and response tactics is essential for ensuring firefighter safety and operational efficiency. The charts on this spread break down key differences between NFPA 1971 and EN 469 standards, helping you make an informed decision.

Note that this is not an exhaustive list of the testing requirements for either standard as the testing requirements are extensive in order to ensure an adequate level of protection for the firefighter.

GEAR STANDARDS

THE DIFFERENCES

Certified to EN 469:2020, our turnout gear delivers trusted protection and lasting performance for firefighters operating in high-risk environments. Every garment is engineered to combine robust durability with lightweight comfort and freedom of movement, helping you perform with confidence under pressure. With LION’s turnout gear, you are equipped with a reliable partner that adapts to the demands of the job—keeping you safe, agile, and ready for action.

INTRODUCTION TO CUSTOMISATION AND LEADING GLOBAL FABRIC SUPPLIERS

For firefighters, turnout gear is more than clothing – it is a second skin, trusted in the most extreme conditions. Built on the proven three-layer system of outer shell, moisture barrier, and thermal barrier, it balances heat protection, comfort, and mobility:

ۘ Outer Shell: Flame-resistant layer that shields against flames, sparks, and abrasion.

ۘ Moisture Barrier: A breathable yet waterproof shield against steam, liquids, and contaminants.

ۘ Thermal Barrier: Insulation that traps air and slows down heat transfer, giving firefighters critical extra seconds in the heat.

Together, these layers form a composite system that protects without compromising mobility, endurance, or breathability.

WHY FABRIC QUALITY COUNTS

Choosing the right fabrics is a matter of safety and performance. High-quality textiles deliver flame resistance, strength, and durability, as well as comfort and reduced heat stress – helping firefighters stay focused on the mission.

CLEANING & REPAIR

CLEANING & REPAIR

The Future of Firefighter PPE Decontamination

At LION, we believe that firefighter protection extends far beyond the frontline. That’s why we partner with DECONTEX, a company that shares our commitment to health, safety, and sustainability. In Europe, DECONTEX leads with its DECO₂FIRE 1M liquid carbon dioxide (CO₂) cleaning technology, while in the U.S., our RedZone CO₂ Clean system follows the same science-driven principles.

Both systems are supported by rigorous quality control processes to ensure PPE is not only decontaminated but also preserved at peak performance. Together, we are raising the global standard for PPE care, keeping gear clean, safe, and mission-ready after every call.

Every intervention leaves behind more than smoke. Firefighters’ turnout gear absorbs toxic residues, PAHs, and carcinogens that can threaten longterm health and compromise protection. Traditional washing methods often fail to remove deep-seated contaminants and may damage advanced protective fabrics.

Liquid CO₂ cleaning changes that. Using pressurized CO₂ in liquid form, the process penetrates every layer of turnout gear, dissolving and removing harmful substances without the need for heat, friction, or water. The patented DECO₂FIRE™ process is a proven technology, verified by eight independent notified bodies, delivers full decontamination, reducing toxins to below detectable levels while preserving fabric integrity.

This 100% waterless, ISO 23616 compliant, low-temperature, and non-abrasive process also disinfects, deodorizes, and re-impregnates the gear, restoring its water repellency and breathability. It extends garment life, lowers environmental impact, and keeps firefighters safer, longer.

Cleaner, safer, longer-lasting gear — because proper protection continues long after the fire is out.

LION TotalCare™ powered by DECONTEX. Ready for action.
