Linton’s Town Wide Garage Sale: Twenty Years of Bargains, Community and Fun Sunday, 18 October will see Linton come alive with garage sales, bargain hunters and plenty of community spirit. Around 20 years ago, Linton’s Jenny Stuart decided she wanted to hold a garage sale. After hearing about other towns successfully running town-wide garage sale days, Jenny thought, “Why not Linton?” She invited other Linton residents to join in and, before long, around 20 garage sale sites were operating around town on the same day. And so, the Linton Town Wide Garage Sale was born. With the exception of two years during the COVID lockdowns, the event has continued every year since. What began as a simple idea has become an eagerly anticipated day for both sellers and bargain hunters.
Last year, Linton joined forces with Cape Clear, which held its own town-wide garage sale on the same day. The partnership proved to be a great success, so the two communities will again hold their garage sales together this year. For Jenny, one of the most important things for prospective sellers is to register early. Although registrations have sometimes arrived only two days before the event, Jenny needs sufficient time to collect the information and complete the all-important map. She usually prints around 200 maps for the Linton Takeaway to distribute. There have been years when all 200 have disappeared, requiring more maps to be printed. That is a lot of potential buyers for a small town like Linton!
Much of the success of the event is thanks to Jenny, who does a terrific job organising it year after year. Once a convenient date has been chosen, advertising begins and registrations open. Jenny contacts each person who registers to find out what they will be selling, then takes on the sizeable task of putting together the map showing all the garage sale locations. Each sale site is also given something to help buyers identify it. In previous years there have been balloons. This year, as happened last year, sellers will be given orange bunting to display.
Ready, set, shop! The official start time is 8.00 am, when copies of the garage sale map can be collected from the Linton Takeaway.
More than just garage sales The Town Wide Garage Sale is also a great opportunity to come and enjoy Linton itself, with local businesses open and welcoming visitors throughout the day. The pub will be offering a café-style breakfast in the morning, providing the perfect fuel for a day of bargain hunting. The Linton Takeaway will be opening slightly earlier than usual, ready to welcome shoppers and provide those all-important maps. And don't miss the Hub, which will be opening its doors to visitors. There will be handmade crafts on display, along with free tea, coffee and chats with our lovely locals.

Of course, some particularly keen bargain hunters have been known to arrive at garage sales considerably earlier! It is up to individual vendors to discourage early shoppers, helping to ensure everyone gets a fair start.

Linton Progress As the weather starts to warm up, it is a beautiful time to be in Linton. The bulbs planted during our last Clean Up Linton Day are flowering outside the Hub and along the streetscape, the paddocks are greening up, the wattle is doing what wattle does best, the birds are making themselves known at all hours, and the gardens are starting to reward all that winter patience. It is a great time to get outside, take a walk around town or along the rail trail, and soak it all in. It is wonderful to see our community groups working together to make Linton a better place for everyone, and what an August that was. A big congratulations to the Linton & District Craft Group and Linton Goldbrush Painters for a wonderful showcase, on Sunday, of the incredible talents we have in this town. The day was an amazing success. Thank you also to Pamela and Andrew for organising Coffee and Chat with a Cop in collaboration with Cris from the Linton Takeaway, and to Jude and the team at the Linton Railway for the 80s Night and Karaoke Night, great fun all round, and to Karen and Chris from the Linton Cemetery Trust for hosting Dying to Know, with a lot of information being shared on a topic most of us dread. A big shout out to Ken as well, for the work he's put in with council to organise the E-Waste Drop Off. And it does not stop there. September is packed with events for everyone, hosted by various groups around town: Linton Bowls Club celebrating their new turf - 5 September. Father's Day - 6 September. Wishing all the Dads, Grandfathers, Stepdads, and father figures a day full of good company, laughter, and a well-earned rest. RU OK? Day - 10 September. A timely reminder to check in on those around you because a simple "how are you going?" can make all the difference. Trivia Night at the Linton Railway Hotel - 12 September. 2027 Linton Calendar entries due - 17 September. Over the years, there have been all sorts of weather conditions, but even the less-than-perfect days haven't stopped people from hunting for a bargain.
If you have things cluttering up the house, shed or garage, the Town Wide Garage Sale is a great opportunity to turn unwanted items into someone else's treasures.
When asked if there had ever been a disastrous year, Jenny remembered the year the drought finally broke. The rain and wind were so strong that her gazebo was of very little use.
If you have only a few things to sell, you don't necessarily need to run your own sale. Find out if someone you know is having a garage sale and ask if you can add your items to their bounty.
But the shoppers still came. All sellers must have their own insurance. “It was amazing,” Jenny recalled. There are often fascinating and unusual items on offer, and sometimes the sellers' pets are just as popular as the bargains. Last year, infamous local border collie Sky was a star attraction. Sky sported a sticker on her head announcing “FREE PATS” and clearly relished the attention; something she is already very accustomed to receiving.

LINTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
Happy Science Week! Our students have been enjoying a variety of hands-on learning over the past fortnight. Highlights included - creating sculptures from natural resources in our outdoor environment during Art. Also, late last week a big rain downpour created excitement, with students making sand channels for the water to run through. Everyone joined in and it was a flurry of teamwork, plumbing and fun to try and drain water from the oval! The students have really enjoyed the start of Science Week with interesting experiments – exploring colour, light and using carbon dioxide to blow out a candle.
Learning Update F-2 We are currently learning to tell the time
to the quarter hour. We have made our own clocks and have been making different times to show our understanding. At home, this learning can be supported through discussions about the time on an analogue clock as they are seen out and about, or reading watches and analogue clocks at home.
3-6 Students are drafting an opinion piece
comparing the book of The Lost Thing to the short film and sharing which they think is more powerful. In Maths we have been working through Time, planning for an event or journey and Statistical Analysis!

Linton and District Historical Society Inc. Annual General Meeting will be held in the Community Hub (the old Shire Offices), and on ZOOM (link to be sent on the morning)
Sunday 20 September at 2:00 pm Speaker: former Linton policeman Gary Thode VA ‘Memories of Policing in Linton’ Our guest speaker is former Senior Constable Gary Thode VA, who was Linton’s police officer from 1987 to 1993. His talk will be entitled “Memories of policing in Linton”, and he is guaranteed to come up with some fascinating stories of those days. For his bravery whilst working in Linton, Gary was awarded the Police Valour Award. His talk will include an account of how he came to be awarded this honour. A brief AGM will be held first. Business to be conducted: Presentation of Annual Report by the President Presentation of Financial Report by the Treasurer Election of Committee of Management for 2025-26 Setting of Annual subscription (proposed amount is $28)

Tackling Linton’s Rubbish Problem The disposal of household waste continues to be a challenge for Linton and surrounding areas, particularly because, unlike many urban communities, we do not have access to a regular hard rubbish collection. Our rates cover the collection of general household waste, recycling and most glass. However, other waste, including hard rubbish and green waste, requires residents to find their own solutions. Garden waste can generally be composted or, where permitted and safe, burned. Larger unwanted household items need to be taken to a nearby transfer station, where disposal fees usually apply. A sample of these fees is included in the table below. Tackling illegal dumping Illegal dumping is an ongoing problem across Golden Plains Shire, with reports increasing from 16 to 28 in one recent month. Household rubbish, mattresses, televisions, ewaste, tyres, construction waste and even hazardous chemical drums are among the items being dumped. The cost of cleaning up these sites is ultimately borne by ratepayers, ranging from hundreds of dollars for tyres to more than $5,000 for some soil and construction waste clean-ups. One option considered by the Linton & District Progress Association (LDPA) was hiring a large skip over a weekend for local residents. However, the cost, along with the risk of rubbish being dumped beside the skip once it is full, makes this less than ideal. The LDPA is happy to investigate other options and welcomes ideas and suggestions from the community. So if you have a practical idea for dealing with hard rubbish, the Association would be pleased to hear from you at lintonprogress@gmail.com. For now, our community relies on generous locals who give their time to collect dumped rubbish, while others report it to Council or DEECA for removal. Reporting dumped rubbish helps Council identify problem areas and arrange clean-up, rather than leaving the burden to local residents.
Report it, don't ignore it If you see illegal dumping in Golden Plains Shire, you can report it to Golden Plains Shire Council on (03) 5220 7111 or through the Snap Send Solve app. Reports can also be emailed to enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au. For major incidents involving hazardous materials, the EPA Victoria Pollution Hotline can be contacted on 1300 372 842. If rubbish has been dumped in the bush, it may be deemed to be on crown land which is the responsibility of DEECA. You can still send a Snap Send Solve to report the rubbbish, however, the request will be forwarded by Council to DEECA. Local waste options There are also some useful local disposal options residents may not be aware of: E-waste: Electronic items can be dropped off at in Linton on the 25th September. Small items any time at The Well in Smythesdale or for free at a Transfer Station if you have larger items. Scrap metal: Waste metal can be deposited in the skips at the front of Smythesdale Soil Supplies, on the highway on the far side of Smythesdale. The LDPA will continue working to find better waste solutions for Linton and the surrounding district and welcomes your help.

LINTON EMERGENCY RELIEF PANTRY
Another cold month in the workshop, but lots more noise and activity. From little dinky projects, to substantial objects. The mail box you could camp in is looking good. Large bench seats contracted by Linton Primary, and the Woady Yallock schools have changed from large piles of wood to very impressive features. Lots of good advice to the world on getting the place in order, but they haven't got on our wavelength. YET! The good Garden Fairy has been hard at it, with lots of new greens popping up in the raised beds. One member doing poorly, and we send our best wishes to "Uncle" Doug for his return. Still on membership. Ladies who want their own time and company, please don't be afraid to act to come forward. There is a definite increase in Womens' Sheds now, and we are only too happy to offer any assistance.
AUGUST IN THE PANTRY Hi all, a little whimsy on the month in the Pantry. On Monday 17th we held our AGM, followed by a general meeting. President; Warren Bowen. Vice Pres; Daryll Lees. Secretary; Rick Bushell. Treasurer; Murray Robertson. Committee members; Kerryn Williams, Dion Ventrice and Frank Clarey Our loyal Secretary, Dion, has had to stand down due to work obligations, and travelling. We thank him for his great work, and wish him all the best during this change. Funds are available to purchase necessary storage cupboards. These will be lockable, clearly labled with contents, dates of distribution, and in order of priority.

Re arranging of fridges to reduce handling and help with stock storage. When milk arrives by the pallet load, it tends to create a small problem. We are thankful at this time for donated space. The fresh items, when in large amounts, have all to be examined for spoilage, disposed of if necessary, which galls greatly. The banter between volunteers, a good sign, improves our working together, and is noticeable by callers.

LINTON AND DISTRICT CRAFT GROUP Pink Up Linton Throughout October Linton is once again fundraising for the McGrath Foundation’s McGrath Cancer Care Nurses.
Some of the other work Craft Group members have been busy with over the past month includes another shawl in the colour Lavender Silk by Janet – this one is for her granddaughter.
Raffle tickets are available at the Linton Takeaway with some fantastic prizes to be won, including a quilt made by the Linton Craft Group and artworks by the Goldbrush Painters. The new venue for the morning tea and raffle this year is the Linton Community Hub at 10 am on Friday 30th October. Here’s a sneak peak of part of the quilt to be raffled:

Linton Movie Mates ... Movies Are Better Together! Love going to the cinema, but prefer not to go alone? Linton Movie Mates might be just what you’re looking for! There’s no membership, no commitment and no set days or times. It’s simply a group of locals who enjoy going out to see films at the cinema and would like some company. When someone spots a film they’d like to see, they put it out there into the Linton Movie Mates group chat and see who else would like to join them. There’s also the option of heading for a coffee afterwards to chat about the film, share opinions and perhaps debate whether it was actually as good as everyone thought!

CARNGHAM LINTON FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB
The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club has completed its 2026 season. Thank you and congratulations to all the players, parents and volunteers for their great participation this year. The 17 & Under netball team qualified for the finals in fourth position, going down to Ballan by just 3 goals in a semi-final at Creswick to complete their season. Our Senior C grade and B grade netball teams also made it through to the finals, with the D graders being eliminated by Gordon in the first week of finals.The C grade team recorded a win against Ballan in their elimination final, before being defeated by Waubra the following week in an extra time semi-final, after scores were level at full-time. The club also held its Vote Count Presentation Night for the 17 & Under netball and Under 18 football team at the Sebastopol Bowling Club on Wednesday 19 August. The night was a wonderful success, with those in attendance looking splendid in semi-formal attire and enjoying a two-course meal. Congratulations to Alana Burns and Hunter McDonald for winning the Best & Fairest for those grades in the netball and football respectively. A full list of award winners will be published with other grades in the next newsletter.
We were very fortunate to have both Lauren Cox and Jake Lohmann attend the night as guest speakers.Lauren has played some senior netball games for Carngham Linton early this season, and is also a professional volleyball player in Australia’s national team. Jake has played over 50 VFL games with North Ballarat, Sandringham, Brisbane, and Werribee. His leadership credentials are outstanding, with key roles at Sandringham, GWV Rebels, and St. Patrick’s College. Both spoke about their sporting journey and provided valuable motivation and advice for players in our top-age junior teams on how to make the most of the opportunities going forward. The Carngham Linton FNC Vote Count Presentation Day for other junior teams will be held on Sunday 13 September at the Carngham Recreation Reserve. The Senior Vote Count Presentation Night will then be held at the Sebastopol Bowling Club on Friday 18 September. We were also thrilled to see Alana Burns win the Central Highlands Netball League 17 & Under Netball Best & Fairest this year, an outstanding achievement. Carngham Linton’s Ned Nash was also named backpocket in the Central Highlands Football League Team of the Year. Well done and congratulations to Alana and Ned!

Free Coffee'n'Cake with a Cop and Safe Pl8 Day On Saturday 15th August the Linton Good Neighbour Initiative held a free Coffee'n'Cake with a Cop and Safe Pl8 Day for the community. This collaborative event saw Warren and Rebecca from Victoria Police (covering Linton, Smythesdale and Rokewood Police Stations) doing the honours with fitting free secure number plate screws to people's vehicles. These antitheft screws help make it harder for number plates to be stolen and used for criminal activities. Warren and Rebecca also spent time chatting with the community and answering questions. Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey, Deputy Mayor Cr Emma Robbins, Cr Des Phelan, and Cr Dom Cook all attended too, enabling many members of the community to raise issues with them. This was all done whilst enjoying barista coffees and cakes kindly supplied by The Linton Takeaway and with the delicious cakes generously decorated by Clare Bears Sweets. There were more than double the previous maximum recorded numbers of people present at similar events run in Victoria so it certainly seems as if the event was a success! Thank you to all who participated.
