LINTON NEWS October 2026
Historical Society AGM an Engaging and Informative Event The Linton & District Historical Society’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday 20 September was a resounding success, attracting 40 people to the Community Hub, with a further seven joining the meeting via Zoom. The guest speaker was former Senior Constable Gary Thode VA, who was Linton’s police officer from 1987 to 1993. In his talk, entitled “Memories of policing in Linton”, he recounted what it was like to be a young police officer during that time, first in the city and then in country towns, including Linton. He spoke of some of the tragic and heart-breaking scenes he had to attend, with little preparation or training and no de-briefing afterwards.
For his bravery whilst working in Linton, Gary was awarded the Police Valour Award, and talk included an account of how he came to be awarded this honour. The enthusiastic audience consisted of many local folk who lived in Linton during Gary’s time as policeman.

In the formal part of the meeting, LDHS’s President, Jill Wheeler, presented the Society’s annual report, and the Treasurer, Karen Ronan, tabled the annual financial report. Deputy Mayor Emma Robbins took the chair for the election of the new management committee for 2026/27. The following were elected unopposed: President: Jill Wheeler; Secretary: Drew Hopkins; Treasurer: Karen Ronan; Committee: Sue Collins, Monica Keefe, Clare McMahon, Scott McMahon.
With such a strong turnout and an engaging guest speaker, the AGM provided an excellent opportunity for members and the wider community to come together, reflect on Linton’s history and look ahead to another year for the Historical Society. Open days The next two open days will be on 11 October and 8 November 2-5pm, at the Letty Armstrong Resource Centre.

Linton Progress September has been a big month for Linton, and it is one worth celebrating. First and foremost, a heartfelt thank you to all our members and sponsors. Your contributions support the events we put on, the plants for our Clean Up Linton Days, and the printing and distribution of the Linton News for the whole community to enjoy. Without your membership and support, none of this would be possible. We are forever grateful, and every new member who joins strengthens what we can do for this town. New members are always welcome.

Our recent community event, the Linton Trivia Night, was a sell-out success. It was a night of fun, fierce competition, and plenty of laughter, proof that when Linton comes together, we know how to have a good time. A special thank you to all the local businesses who contributed to the raffle prizes. The proceeds raised will go towards future grant projects and community events, and the Movie Day & Night on 2 October is happening because of your generosity. It will be completely FREE for the community to enjoy.

A special thank you to Frank Clarey for organising the community chat with Martha Haylett. It was a productive afternoon and a great opportunity to raise the issues that matter most to our town. Topics discussed included Jennings Park, tourism and attracting visitors to Linton, making the town RV friendly, Devil's Kitchen and surrounding areas, signage and local information, the Linton information board, community transport, social isolation and mental health, health services, and waste and tip services. Clear actions have come out of the discussion and we will continue to work through these together.

Clean Up Linton Day Returns The next twice-yearly Clean Up Linton Day will be held on Saturday, 10 October, giving locals the opportunity to lend a hand and help make Linton look its best ahead of the Townwide Garage Sale the following weekend. Volunteers are invited to meet outside the Community Hub at 10:00 am. There will be plenty to do, including weeding, planting, collecting rubbish and tackling anything else that will help make our town look beautiful. Some tools and plants will be provided. Previous Clean Up Linton days have been a lot of fun and a great way to meet others in our community, so come along, bring your enthusiasm and enjoy a morning helping to spruce up Linton followed by a free barbecue lunch at the Railway Hotel. If you’ve noticed somewhere around town that could do with some extra care and attention, please let us know. Enquiries: text 0404 376 384.
Linton E-Waste Day a Resounding Success Linton showed its community spirit on Friday 25 September, when residents turned out in force for the EWaste Collection Day at the Linton & District Bowling Club car park. From 9am to 1pm, a steady stream of locals dropped off old phones, computers, cables and other unwanted
electronics, all free of charge. Every item will now be safely dismantled into plastic, glass, metal wiring and circuit boards, then sent to specialised recyclers to be made into new products. Since 2019, Victoria has banned e-waste from household bins and landfill. Batteries and electronic components can spark fires in collection trucks and leach hazardous materials into soil and groundwater, so safe disposal really matters. Thanks everyone who took part. A special thank you to Ken McLachlan for organising the day, and to the Bowling Club for hosting. Together, as a community, we have made our district cleaner, safer and more sustainable.

The Linton and District Craft Group Inc. was deeply honoured to be asked to take over responsibility for organising the annual Pink Up Linton fundraising activities and host the annual Morning Tea. This is because many members of the Craft Group have had either a relative or friend (or both) who has been affected by cancer and know first hand how vital it is to receive professional and caring support during their cancer journeys.
What’s happening and when? On Friday 30th October 2026 at 10:00am there will be a Pink Morning Tea at the new location of the Linton Community Hub, 68, Sussex Street, Linton, Victoria, 3360. The cost will be $5 per person with proceeds going to support the McGrath Foundation which provides support to people experiencing cancer. Tea, coffee, cake, and scones will be served with a “Pretty in Pink” themed display by the talented Goldbrush Painters. In the Craft Room will be a wonderful display of handmade items (some for sale), including the stunning quilt which was deservedly awarded a Judge’s prize in the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Fair.
The Craft Group is totally committed to making these worthwhile fundraising activities a success so that the wonderful and deeply appreciated work of the McGrath Foundation can continue. Now we just need all the kind folks in Linton and our neighbouring communities to get behind us too! The McGrath Foundation’s Cancer Care Nurses provide expert nursing care and support to people experiencing any type of cancer, and their support network. For free. Right across Australia. Everyday 450 people in Australia are diagnosed with cancer – helping fund the care they need starts with us. What can people do? Decorate your home / business / mailbox from 1 - 31 October to raise awareness of cancer. Come to the Pink Morning Tea. Wear something pink. Dig into your wallets, purses and piggy banks and buy some raffle tickets. Donate a raffle prize. Buy a handmade item from the talented Craft Group.
Raffle tickets are available for sale at The Linton Takeaway and the Linton Railway Hotel with lots of lovely prizes including a first prize of a quilt made by Linton and District Craft Group Inc. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 and this will be drawn at the Morning Tea. If anyone would like to donate prizes, they will be gratefully accepted at The Takeaway or at the Craft Group. History of Pinking Up Linton Cristine Gall is well known in Linton for initiating the Pink Up Linton fundraising activities in aid of the McGrath Foundation over 6 years ago. This began both after a very close friend and family members of Cris's were diagnosed with cancer. Cris, who is a long-term generous donor to various charities, knew she simply had to do something on a bigger scale to help, aside from the obvious of providing her personal care and support to her loved ones. Pink Up Linton has raised a total of over $7,000 since 2021 in a warm, inclusive, positive manner which is an outstanding achievement. Cris has handed over the baton of responsibility for continuing her legacy with regard to fundraising for the McGrath Foundation to the Linton and District Craft Group Inc. However, both she, and her business, The Linton Takeaway, remain keen financial supporters, wearing pink, helping the ladies of the Craft Group, and as a place where you can buy your raffle tickets.

LINTON & DISTRICT MEN’S SHED
This month in the Shed has been a mixed bag, and very unhappy. Our beloved member Doug succumbed to a nasty complaint in St. J of G earlier this month. A lovely notice from our Secretary is below. We attended a wake for Doug at their house last Sunday. The house was full of people, an indication of how many friends, family and social contacts he had. And, damn me, Peter, our most recent member died from Sepsis two days later. Good Morning All,
On a more cheerful note, plenty of action in the workshop. A letter box big enough for a large animal is finished. Two very attractive bench seats are also awaiting delivery. And, we cleaned the mess up. More good news. Two of the lads got a $7,000 Grant from Sovereign Energy, which is being used to purchase gravel for the drive way, and the car parking area. I've noticed really nice biscuits in the Rec. room. Better than my cheap contribution. Maybe a windfall? Keep well my friends, and enjoy Spring.
It is with a sad heart that I tell you that a long time shed member, shed manager & friend, Doug Phillips, sadly passed away yesterday morning. We will miss this member's impish smile & mentoring attitude. May we offer his loving wife, Margaret, our sincere condolences. Rest in peace Doug, you will be sadly missed. Best regards, Neil Kempster, Temporary LDMS Secretary

Hi Fellow Lintonions, it’s time to register to be a seller at this year’s town wide garage sale. So far we’ve received 16 registrations. It is simple. I prefer a text, but phone if you like. Same as in the past: $10 to participate, I get the maps printed, and you get something to make the public aware you’re having a sale same as last year - a strip of orange bunting. We advertise online, there are a couple of ads in the Courier and signage you can see driving in to Smythesdale from Ballarat. You are responsible for Insurance. The Take Away will kindly open early to distribute the maps on the day. Groups are most welcome to participate. Also if you want to open earlier or stay open later, just let me know and it can go on the sheet. Jenny Stuart - Ph 0427 447 416

GOLDBRUSH PAINTERS The last Sunday in September saw another successful Open Day at the Linton Community Hub. It was more focussed to suit those who are unable to attend the regular Friday Goldbrush Painters session with more of an emphasis on a workshop/demonstration atmosphere. As always everyone is welcome to join in, or, in the words of Gary Eats, “Let’s give it a go!”. In other news the latest iteration of the Golden Spaces Exhibition has now arrived and is on display for the next few months at The Well in Smythesdale.
