Linton: A Name Shared Around the World

Most of us think of Linton as our own special corner of regional Victoria, but did you know there are dozens of places around the world that share our town's name?

The name Linton has ancient English origins and is generally believed to derive from the Old English words lind (meaning a lime or linden tree) and tūn (meaning a settlement or village) In some cases, it has also been interpreted as referring to a settlement associated with flax or a hillside, depending on the locality Whatever its precise origin, the name has been associated with English villages for well over a thousand years.

Our own Linton has a distinctly Australian story European settlement in the district began in 1839, when Scottish immigrants Mary and Joseph Linton established the Emu Hill pastoral run after arriving in the area then known as Wardy Yallock In 1855, gold was discovered on the northern portion of the run, attracting hundreds of miners from around the world The rapidly growing settlement became known as "Linton's Diggings", and when a new township was established on Surface Hill in 1860, it marked the beginning of the Linton we know today

Today there are numerous places called Linton across the globe - see the list below However, our Linton is the only town in Australia’s to bear the name

England – at least 10 villages, including Linton in Derbyshire, Cambridgeshire, Kent, North Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Somerset, West Yorkshire and Northumberland, plus Linton-on-Ouse

Scotland – East Linton, West Linton, Linton (Scottish Borders) and Linton in Orkney

Canada – Linton, Ontario and Linton, Quebec

New Zealand – Linton, near Palmerston North

United States – Linton, Indiana; Linton, North Dakota; Linton, Georgia; Linton, Kentucky; and Linton, Wisconsin

Last year I (your editor) had the opportunity to visit Linton in Derbyshire, England - pictured on this page. Although very different in appearance from our own town, it was fascinating to walk through another Linton on the other side of the world. One thing that certainly caught my eye was a house painted entirely in what could only be described as "Barbie pink". In amongst the village's terrace houses, it was impossible to miss! (Apologies for those reading the non-colour version of this newsletter )

It's fascinating to think that while our Linton and the many other Lintons around the world are separated by thousands of kilometres, they are connected by a shared name while each has its own unique history and identity

President’s Report

I will not pretend the past little while has been without its challenges. Like any small town, Linton is not immune to the occasional rumour or misunderstanding, and I want to address a few things openly, not just for our members, but for anyone in the community who has had questions or concerns about how the L&DPA operates.

This committee is eight volunteers giving their personal time each week because they genuinely care about this town. Everything we do is aimed at making Linton a better, more inclusive, and more enjoyable place to live, for everyone. There is no personal agenda, no hidden motives, and nothing to hide. Just people who love where they live and want to see it thrive.

If you have a concern, bring it to us directly. We have an email address, a phone number listed below, Messenger, and committee members who walk around this town every day. What does not help anyone is rumour, second-hand commentary, or putting your narrative into someone else's voice. Bringing up old topics that have already been dealt with only because you do not agree creates division and stress in a community that deserves better. It also makes it harder for volunteers to keep showing up and for anyone coming into the community to feel safe and welcomed. We are asking for the same respect we extend to everyone else.

Small towns only work when people support each other, and that includes every small business, whether they have a shopfront on the main street or run something from their kitchen table. These are your neighbours taking a risk and trying to build something for this community. They deserve support, not scrutiny. On a personal note, having owned a business here and having made the heartbreaking decision to close the doors after a tumultuous time and rumours flying around, when all we ever wanted to do was create something for this town to enjoy and to bring the community together, I know firsthand how much that lack of support costs. Not just financially for us but for our staff who were all locals trying to earn a living, and personally for our mental health. Opening those doors is something that is still missed today. We do not want to see that happen to anyone else. So, before you pass judgement, ask yourself whether you are lifting someone up or pulling them down. In a town this size, it makes a real difference.

President’s Report (continued)

Now, to the good stuff, because there is plenty of it.

We have now met three times, with our most recent meeting open to members in person and online. Six committee members, six members in the room, one joining remotely, and not one person stayed silent. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and came with an open mind.

Here is what was agreed by all:

Events In the past four years, Linton has had just two community-run events, the movie night and murder mystery night. Only two. Bringing people together is a priority and we would like to change this so there are more community events and are already working on it.

Working groups. We are forming working groups across events, grants, social media, the new website, finance, youth activities, and more. There is no formal process, reach out by phone, email, or drop a note at the Hub. The more hands involved, the more we can achieve.

Meeting structure We opened with this topic and asked that everyone hold their views until the very end of the meeting. We then went around the room so that every member present and every committee member could have their say before any decision was made. The result was clear and agreed to by all.

Every second meeting will be open to members, available both in person and via Zoom. Committeeonly meetings allow us to work through the operational detail efficiently, but everything remains transparent. Members can submit anything they would like raised at any point, if you want it on the agenda, that is exactly where it will go. A summary will be sent to all members after every meeting. If something significant arises between scheduled meetings, a special session will be called with members involved in the discussion.

This structure is not about shutting anyone out. It is about making sure we can get things done and move projects forward for the whole town. We have working groups that will meet regularly and anyone on them will have a voice. The more focused and organised we are, the more we can deliver for Linton.

There is a view we are trying to do too much at once. Personally, I think that is a risk worth taking. If we achieve even two or three things this year, we will have accomplished more than has been done in a long time.

This town has so much going for it. We are asking you to back us, get involved, and help us build something worth being proud of.

World Cup Fever!

The ‘World Game’ has certainly taken hold here at school with most students playing Soccer every recess and lunch break since returning from holidays It has been great to see our students active and social - in all sorts of weather.

Senior students hit the ground running this term with an amazing session with Dr Karl online Our students quizzed Dr Karl on all things space, evolution, non-Newtonian fluids and more Thanks to Dr Karl for giving up his time and being so engaging.

Towards the middle of the term, we have Science Week in Week 6 and Book Week in Week 7 with the highlight being an excursion to Sovereign Hill!

Learning Update

We are excited to be back after school holidays. In class we have been learning about how illustrators can create mood in a story, by thinking about the colours they have used In maths we have been learning about fractions

Senior students have started a text study unit on The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan We are comparing the book to the short film and discussing the mood, themes involved and how the book encourages you to ask more questions. Students have also been busily finishing their marble runs and studying fractions in Maths

Community Update from the Linton Community Hub Management Inc. Committee

In light of recent public social media posts regarding the request for the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry (the Pantry) to relocate within the Linton Community Hub at 68 Sussex St to the former Council Chambers, ante room and kitchen area, the Linton Community Hub Mgt Inc committee would like to share the following:

BACKGROUND

The Linton Community Hub Mgt Inc (LCHM) was formed in 2024 as a result of the local community wanting to maintain access and control of the former Council premises at 68 Sussex St.

LCHM is an incorporated association with representation from the following seven Hub user groups including:

Linton & District Craft Inc;

Linton & District Historical Society Inc;

Linton & District Progress Association Inc; Goldbrush Painters;

Linton Cemetery Trust;

Linton Emergency Relief Pantry; and Coffee, Cake ‘n Chat group.

While there are other users of the Hub, these groups represent the majority of the users. The LCHM committee reports regularly to Golden Plains Shire Council and annually to Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Golden Plains Shire Council (GPSC) offered a 12month licence agreement to the newly formed LCHM in 2024. After delivering on requirements set by GPSC during 24/25, in mid-2025 GPSC offered LCHM Inc a three-year licence to manage the Hub.

RECENT EVENTS

In a meeting on 4 May 2026, LCHM committee members received a proposal from the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry stating that they were planning to ‘take over’ the former Council Chambers room, the kitchen and ante room, make substantial changes to the room and remove all historical items from the Chamber The proposal was brought to the committee by Rick Bushell from Haddon Community Learning Centre and was not discussed with the LCHM committee beforehand.

Objections to this proposal were raised at the meeting and the LCHM committee resolved to investigate the views of all user groups regarding the proposal. The committee also expressed concern that some views put forward by the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry and nominated representative Rick Bushell were misinformed, in particular, the claim that the former Council Chamber was ‘underutilised’

A range of alternative options for storage space were presented to the Pantry representative. To date there has been no clear offer to consider alternative proposals nor any other option presented by the Pantry to the LCHM committee.

At the 1 June meeting, the committee was presented with a letter from LCHM President Daryll Lees who resigned from his position effective immediately. LCHM Treasurer Jennifer Cromarty stepped in as Acting President to chair the meeting.

LCHM committee agreed to write to the President of the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry Warren Bowen –inviting him to attend the next meeting of LCHM Inc in July and discuss a way forward (and consider who would represent the Food Pantry on the LCHM committee). After learning that the Food Pantry representative had contacted GPSC, the LCHM committee agreed to write to Golden Plains Shire Council with a summary of the issues.

CURRENT POSITION

On Friday 17 July the LCHM received a letter from the GPSC CEO. In summary:

GPSC has provided a community licence to LCMH committee to manage, control and operate the Hub for the benefit of the community

GPSC understands that the Council Chamber at Linton Community Hub is not available (as a dedicated location for the Pantry at this time) –with a range of other community uses/activities currently occurring in this space.

GPSC thanked the volunteer members of LCHM Inc. for its valuable ongoing governance and management of the facility.

The LCHM committee wishes to state that it:

Supports the work of the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry for those in need

Does not support the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry expanding into the former Council Chambers

Wants to move forward with the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry in a positive and collaborative manner

Supports the work of the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry but has not been presented with any other options for consideration

Invited President Warren Bowen to the LCHM July meeting who did not attend.

The LCHM committee believes the Linton Community Hub former Council Chamber room, ante room, kitchen and general meeting areas need to be available to the whole community and that the historic and cultural importance to Linton of the former Council Chamber of the original Shire of Grenville be preserved.

Craft Group helped celebrate a significant birthday recently – and even got some work done afterwards!

In the latest interpretation of “show and tell” Janet shows us her completed shrug while Lyn L models her crocheted beanie while remaining incognito

Meanwhile, Margaret continues to do her bit for the nation’s productivity by sewing more aprons for the Betoota Hotel, knitting enough beanies for all the heads of at least the colder regions of Australia, and just generally creating for most her waking hours, if not more.

The Linton & District Craft Group meets every Thursday at the Linton Community Hub, from 10am until 3pm New members or curious visitors are always welcome to pop in, have a cuppa, and see what everyone is working on.

Our guest speaker will be former Linton policeman Gary Thode, who was the local police constable from 1987 to 1993. His talk will be entitled “Memories of policing in Linton”, and he is guaranteed to come up with some fascinating stories of those days.

In addition to this, the elections for the 2026-2027 committee will be conducted, and the meeting will include the annual President’s Report and the annual Financial Report

LINTON & DISTRICT MEN’S

Winter hasn't slowed things down at the Linton Men's Shed. July has been another busy month, with plenty happening around the Shed and a good mix of projects keeping members occupied As with any workshop, not every project goes according to plan one in particular left behind a memorable mess but that's all part of the fun!

Looking after our building continues to be a priority One of our doors has been repaired, while another has reached the stage where replacement is the best option. Years of weather exposure are beginning to take their toll, so we're currently obtaining quotes for a new north-facing door Although it hasn't endured the same punishment as the south-facing side of the building, it's ready for an upgrade and will help keep our Shed in good shape for years to come.

Our meeting on Wednesday, 15 July, was a productive one, with plenty of ideas discussed and enough projects lined up to keep everyone's hands busy over the coming weeks.

We're also delighted that a local resident has offered to bring our unused raised garden beds back to life Funds have already been set aside for seeds and other gardening supplies, so once the weather becomes a little kinder, we'll be ready to get growing. It's another great way to make the most of our grounds and add something new to the Shed

For now, our opening hours will remain Mondays and Wednesdays from 11.00 am until 4.00 pm. With members juggling family, work and other commitments, numbers have been a little lower at times That's prompted us to start planning another membership drive, and we'd love to welcome some new faces through the door

One exciting idea discussed this month was the possibility of establishing a Women's Shed We all know women in our community with practical skills, creativity and a willingness to learn or share their knowledge. We'd love to hear from anyone interested in becoming part of such a group. We encourage women throughout Linton and the surrounding district to give the idea some thought They would be warmly welcomed as full members of our Shed community

Inside the workshop, we're continuing to rearrange the workspace to make it more practical and give more members a dedicated area to work on their own projects Small changes like these make a big difference to how comfortably everyone can work together.

Technology isn't everyone's favourite subject, but thankfully Neil has it well under control He has installed Trend Micro antivirus protection on our laptop and is busy retrieving important files from the cloud before removing the old cloud storage. It's all part of keeping our records safe and our systems running smoothly

A special thank you goes to Geoff R. and Jeff M., who have completed a $5,000 grant application to help fund gravel for our driveway. It's a worthwhile project that will improve access to the Shed, and we appreciate the time and effort they've put into preparing the application.

Looking ahead, we're excited about our Small Engine Display on Wednesday, 27 July Cristine from the Takeaway will be looking after the catering, and we're looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon together. We'll bring you all the highlights in next month's newsletter.

CARNGHAM LINTON FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

The Carngham Linton FNC participated in the TAC ‘Band Together Round’ for road safety at Waubra on Saturday 25 July.

In wintry conditions, our footballers and netballers donned blue TAC arm bands in their matches. We also held a ‘Drive to Training’ night at Linton in the Thursday leading up to the game, encouraging our L plate juniors to get driving practice in night conditions.

The club will also be participating in the ‘Culture or Respect’ Round on Saturday, 8 August, with our senior football team and A grade netball team to be wearing special uniforms with orange Respect Round trims and logos The Culture of Respect initiative is designed to enhance club culture, and highlight the positive behaviours of leaders within the football/netball clubs A vision, where everybody can feel heard, valued, safe and free from gendered violence

The club has had mixed results on the field and court during July, with our senior football team currently sitting on 6 wins for the season and still a chance to make finals with 3 rounds remaining. Our C grade, D grade and Under 17 netball teams have been our highest performing teams to date this season, all looking to secure a finals berth in 2026. We wish all teams well for the remainder of the home and away season, with matches against Daylesford, Dunnstown and Newlyn coming up in August.

The Carngham Linton FNC will be holding its Sponsors Day and ‘Thousandaire Night’ fundraiser for the last home and away match of the season against Newlyn at Snake Valley on Saturday 15 August GO SAINTS!!!

GOLDBRUSH PAINTERS

The Linton Community Art Facility was officially opened on the 28th February 2002. It serves as the home base for the Linton Craft Group and the Goldbrush Painters with both groups holding regular weekly sessions.

Both groups belong to that rank of many extraordinary volunteer community groups who make a valuable contribution to the Golden Plains Shire community

The history of the Linton community art spaces is deeply rooted in the Linton Community Hub (historically known as the Grenville Shire Office) Rather than being a standalone, purpose-built modern gallery, the town's dedicated art and craft facility is an adaptation of a prominent 20thcentury civic building. Coming up, Sunday 30 August will see another Goldbrush Painters Open Day with an exhibition and demonstrations throughout the Linton Community Hub from 11am-3pm.

The Golden Spaces 2026 Winter Exhibition will soon be making its way to the north of the shire, for display at The Well in Smythesdale. The Goldbrush Painters proudly represent 30% of the 29 exhibiting artists. The current catalogue can be viewed here:

LINTON EMERGENCY RELIEF PANTRY

The Pantry continues to be a welcoming place thanks to our wonderful volunteers, generous community support, Foodbank deliveries and the many donations that keep our shelves stocked

A recent Foodbank delivery has helped replenish our supplies of longer-lasting pantry staples. We also have fresh produce available, including mushrooms, potatoes, oranges, apples, beetroot, corn and lemons, with special thanks to Ted for his generous donation of lemons.

We encourage everyone to follow the Linton Emergency Relief Pantry on Facebook for regular updates, upcoming events and Pantry news Your likes and positive comments help raise awareness of the support available in our community.

On 23 July, the Thread Van visited the Pantry and was a great success, providing quality new clothing for local people and families Future visits and special events will be advertised on Facebook, at the Pantry and in the Linton News.

We are also looking for local hairdressers who may be willing to donate a little of their time and skills to help people doing it tough

Recent improvements to our shelving and floor space have made the Pantry more practical, and generous funding will soon allow us to install lockable cupboards for secure storage

The Pantry is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.

I/We agree to support the purposes of the Linton and District Progress Association, as outlined below, and to uphold the Values and Behaviours of the Association in the spirit of community and respect.

Purposes of the Linton and District Progress Association

1 To promote the economic, social, and cultural development of the Linton community, while protecting and enhancing the local environment, and to publish the Linton Community news.

2.To foster relations with other associations and bodies with similar goals.

3.To promote and assist worthy causes as agreed at a general meeting by members with a majority vote.

4.To invest funds of the association, not immediately required, in such a manner as the members or committee shall determine suitable. The funds of the association shall be derived from advertising fees from the Linton News, membership fees, donations and other fund-raising activities as the committee determines applicable.

5 To facilitate government grants for applicable community projects.
