DWELLING IN TRANQUILITY

——THE TRANSLATIONS OF CHINESE LANDSCAPE PAINTING

Location: Huzhou, China Instruclor: Ting Chen Time: 2025.6- 2024.9 Area 9m²

Based on the translation of Chinese traditional landscape paintings, the aesthetics of “ a place to live, to stay and appreciate ” are integrated into modern design. The project starts with the material properties of bamboo itself and combines them with the unique spatial needs of the tea pavilion, allowing the design to be integrated into the local culture and natural landscape. The tea pavilion uses bamboo structure to simulate the cascading tea mountain, and gauze curtains to simulate the wind sound in bamboo forest. It creates a spiritual space that can be used, listened to, tasted, appreciated and stayed in, conveying the charm of oriental culture.

TRANSLATION OF CHINESE LANDSCAPE PAINTING

The painting features a serene landscape of mountains and water, with a small, tranquil dwelling by the riverside. The structure, surrounded by trees, suggests a secluded and peaceful setting. The hermit within the dwelling is engaged in reading or study, enhancing the theme of intellectual solitude in nature. The calm and meditative atmosphere reflects a harmonious relationship between human life and the natural world.

SPATIAL STRUCTURE IN CHINESE PAINTING

In the painting, the contrast between the distant mountains and the near water creates a farreaching visual space, while the house and the bridge form a spatial axis that guides the eye. The painting not only shows the vastness of nature but also conveys the intimate relationship between human beings and the environment through the hermit's meditations inside the house, forming a spiritual space that can be learned, listened to, tasted, appreciated, and lingered in.

The site is located in Anji County, which has the reputation of Chinese bamboo hometown, situated in the bamboo sea among the mountains and water. The bamboo traditional craft has been inherited for thousands of years, and the Anji white tea is nourished by clouds and mist in the mountains, which attracts a large number of tourists.

CULTURE & INDUSTRY

TEA CULTURE

The residents make their living by planting bamboo and tea, giving birth to a unique tea and bamboo culture. The bamboo weaving crafts passed down for long history provide the basis for bamboo construction, industrial products, processing, and other industries. The long history of white tea cultivation and the unique white tea Tea making process have been passed down in this area for more than a hundred years.

The design is based on the translation of traditional landscape paintings, with bamboo joints to simulate the Cascading tea mountain and gauze curtains to simulate the sound of the wind blowing through the bamboo forest. Pedestrians can enjoy the bamboo landscape and lotus in the water while resting in the pavilion. It creates a space where you can walk, listen, taste, enjoy and stay, conveying the charm of oriental culture.

THE MOUNTAINS AND MIGRATORY BIRDS OF WATCHTOWER

Dali, China

BACKGROUND & CONCEPT

Botou Village is local in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, and facing mountains to the west and Dali West Lake to the south. Relying on the unique charm of the lake and mountains and the Bai culture, the watchtower constructs an anchor point for the senses between the lake and the mountains. The design is inspired by the framed aesthetics of the round windows of the Bai dwellings, and the of the wooden frame and polycarbonate panel echoes tradition and modern simplicity and lightness. Through the multi-directional observation decks, people are guided to move with the scenery - either stopping to look at the silhouette of the lake and mountains or the migratory birds. Harmonizing “outward exploration” and “inward perception” with spatial rhythms. The design abandons the grandiose conquest of the landscape, and instead uses the scale of the body to measure the subtle traces of wind, light, and seasons, allowing each ordinary landscape to become a medium for dialog between the self and nature.

ENCOUNTER WITH CIVILIZATION: A DIALOGUE

BETWEEN

THE CAMERA AND HISTORY

Meeting civilization in every trip, every time you press the shutter, it is a dialogue with history. Architecture is never just an object to be viewed. When my viewfinder frame is aligned with the traces of light and shadow on the pink walls of th Suzhou garden and the Anhui-style architecture, it is just like the same ray of morning sunlight that the owner of the garden was gazing at a hundred years ago; when the remnant columns of the ancient temples are turned into silhouettes in the backlight, the broken heads of the Corinthian columns are still telling the complete civilization with the mutilated geometry. These photos are not a romanticization of ruins, but an attempt to use visual language to ask: how do we salvage unwritten history from material decay when wood cracks, stone flakes, and metal oxidizes?
