Dear Hiring Team,
I am writing to apply for the Interior Design Intern position at Gensler. I am currently a Master of Interior Design student at Pratt Institute, and I received my undergraduate degree in Environmental Design from Tsinghua University. My academic background has trained me to think across different scales, from massing and spatial organization to furniture, material, and user experience. In my design work, I have been interested in exploring different ways of beginning a project: sometimes from the facade and moving inward, sometimes from furniture and the human scale, and sometimes from volume and spatial division as a way of shaping space. Working between these approaches has helped me understand design not only as form-making, but as a way of organizing experience.
My interest in Gensler is also personal. During my undergraduate years, I often studied in the School of Economics and Management building at Tsinghua University, which was designed by Gensler. Spending time there left a strong impression on me. What stayed with me most was the way circulation connected spaces that at first felt separate. The staggered volumes created a strong sense of depth and hierarchy, while different routes and exits produced distinct spatial experiences. That project made me more aware of how design can shape movement, perception, and atmosphere in everyday life.
At Pratt, I have continued to develop this interest through studio work focused on concept development, spatial storytelling, representation, and user experience. My training has strengthened my ability to work through drawing, modeling, rendering, and research while thinking carefully about how people move through and respond to interior space. I have experience with Rhino, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite, and I value design as a process that requires clarity, sensitivity, and attention to detail. In addition to my academic work, limited professional experience has also helped me better understand how ideas develop through the design process.
I am drawn to Gensler’s Interior Design team because of the way your work moves across scales while remaining attentive to spatial experience. I would be excited by the opportunity to contribute my curiosity, visual sensitivity, and commitment to thoughtful design while continuing to learn from your team.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I have attached my resume and portfolio, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to further discuss my qualifications.
Sincerely, Lingxuan Li
