WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT routine excellence
Kate Walkup’s secret to success in the swimming pool and the classroom is establishing a routine and sticking to it by ellie holstine ’23
T
hough she’s wild about sports, Kate Walkup’s talents are not limited to the swimming pool. The Linfield University junior also excels in her role as a sports editor with The Linfield Review. As tough as she is to beat in the 200-yard butterfly race, she is equally relentless in the pursuit of a career in sports journalism. Being a student-athlete has always been second nature for Walkup. A natural-born swimmer, she takes cross training seriously. In her three seasons with the Linfield swimming program, Walkup has become a force to be reckoned with in the pool. Her dedication to her sport is unmatched. Most days, she spends close to four hours in the pool or in the gym. There’s no question where Walkup’s priorities lie. As far as events go, Walkup is considered a sprinter in the pool. Her favorite and best event is the 200 butterfly. “I have done (the butterfly) since I was 12. I did it for the first time during a summer meet and I ended up getting the team record,” says Walkup. “It’s one of those races that if you do it really well, it doesn’t hurt at all.” Using dedication and determination, Walkup enjoys sticking to a routine to in order to stay focused. She has a fire about her that keeps her on track to pursue her goals not only in the pool, but in her classes and career. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that she will become a professional sports journalist one day after she completes her four-year run with the Linfield swim team. “Kate is really serious about swimming,” says teammate and training partner Gabe Dawson. “At 5:45 a.m., while we’re waiting for practice to start and everyone else has low energy and moping around, she is waiting eagerly with her cap and goggles on. She is super motivating and a great teammate.” Walkup enjoys seeing herself and her team improve as the season progresses. Her favorite part of the season is the Northwest Conference Championships, because all team members have worked tirelessly to train for that single weekend with hopes of recording noticeable improvements. She says it’s especially
gratifying to see all of the early morning wakeups and the long hours training in the pool come together into one meet with all team members realizing new personal-best times. “It’s the changes in the big meets at the end of season, and the good races that show what we have been working for all season.” Growing up in Eugene, Oregon, home to Hayward Field and famous Tracktown USA, Walkup grew up surrounded by elite athletes who pushed themselves to their limit. She grew up recognizing the importance of fueling her body properly and cross training for swimming. And in order to achieve success, she understands the need to do more than just swim. During the offseason, she competes in many road races with her family, including The Cascade Relays, a 216-mile relay race with participants running a different legs. “When I’m not swimming, running is my automatic cross training,” Walkup says. Over the summer, Walkup had the incredible opportunity to experience the magic of Hayward Field as an intern with Tracktown USA. Her job was to cover major track meets, including the NCAA Division I Championships and the U.S. Olympic Trials. “I interned for Tracktown USA in communications starting in April and ending around the Olympics Trials,” explains the Journalism and Media Studies major. “I would work 15-hour days, produce a story a day and write meet recaps.” Having to juggle the demands of staying fit for swim season, 15-hour work days and living a healthy lifestyle, Walkup relied on following a routine and putting in the work. She finds peace in establishing a regular routine and sticking to it. To avoid burnout, she varies her routine with different forms of cross training. “During the Trials, I tried to run 10 miles a week and got into doing CrossFit.” On campus, Walkup is involved in the Alpha Phi sorority. As the Director of Sisterhood, she plans bonding events for her sorority sisters. She also manages the Linfield swim team social media pages. Walkup is preparing herself well for a future in sports media. From the pool to the camera to the computer, Walkup is a talented and dedicated student-athlete who is preparing herself for positive outcomes. The future is bright for the next great sports journalist.
