Our Journey with Abacus Our journey with Abacus started a little over five years ago we had been recommended abacus from a friend who we had met who was fostering a boy who happened to be in the same class at school as our eldest son. We gave the agency a call and we had a lovely chat with an Abacus Social Worker named Rosemary who then came out to the house and met with myself and my partner and our children and had a chat with us all about the prospects of Fostering, we were nervous, however, Rosemary helped us to feel at ease straight away.
a traditional birthday party (which he really wanted) we had it in the garden lots of his school friends came and we had a bouncy castle and played pass the parcel he didn’t stop smiling all day! Also holidays we’ve had some fantastic adventures. He’s a really adventurous lad he loves extreme sports, he’s had a go at snow skiing, horse riding and rock climbing to name a few! He’s now ‘long-term matched’ with us he has been the most wonderful, rewarding and successful start to our journey he’s the one that has filled us with joy and confidence to further open up our family to two more children.
Right from the beginning Our Fostering journey was focused around our family. Our children were at the heart of the decisions, their views, worries and opinions all discussed and supported.
One who stayed with us for around 18 months and has since been adopted he is the most beautiful boy, full of fun and energy at only two years old when he first came and a little over four when he left for his forever family.
As we both work and with our own birth children to consider we knew the child that was going to be placed with us might take a little longer than what is typical and we were happy with that, it was important it was right.
We had such a sense of pride in the little boy that left us as he arrived non-verbal with some behavioural concerns and he left talking in full sentences and is now thriving and doing so so well.
The process to find the right child for the right family and the right family for the right child is called ‘matching’ and this is crucial and we were ready, prepared and happy to wait.
We still see him on a monthly meet up with his lovely family, which we all really look forward to. We consider his family close friends and know we are incredibly lucky to still be able to watch him grow up.
A few times we had ‘matched’ with a child and were excited for them to come but unfortunately for various reasons they went somewhere else, this was a little disheartening as we couldn’t wait to start fostering.
After our second foster son left for his forever family, we took a little time before opening our doors once more. We felt a strange sense of grief, pride and joy all mixed into one as he left and it was one of our more challenging moments as a family to work through.
We waited around a year for our first child, and we know now that was for the very best reasons as that little boy that has been living with us for just over four years. One of many highlights has been giving him 18
Our Health each and every little one we’ve welcomed as their own we are so grateful to them. As have our friends who are always supporting us.
Abacus supported us with counselling sessions to work through the emotions we felt. We also have regular supervision with our supervising Social Worker where we discussed how we were all coping.
Also our agency, the system can be confusing for a first time Foster Carer lots of acronyms, lots of legal information and court processes that can feel overwhelming but our agency and our supervising Social workers are always on hand 24/7 we can phone them we can chat to them or we can arrange to meet up. They never make you feel silly for asking a question and they can also support your learning needs with specific training.
Seven months on, we decided the time was right to begin ‘matching’ again and we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming a little one who is just four years old he’s been with us for a little over seven weeks now and we are loving getting to know each other, working through challenges and supporting his development, again he has some communication needs which we’ve been helping him with using makaton, Our older boys have been great at learning all the signs, they are really protective of him and love to help him.
Abacus fostering have arranged some fantastic events for the whole family where we get to share a day with the other fostering families both birth children and Foster children the whole family are welcome.
Fostering is 100% our greatest achievement, we are so proud to be able to Foster. You hear a lot about fostering and how you just need a spare bedroom and a big heart and although those two things are essential, you also need an awful lot more you need support, you need to have a robust support network of your friends and family who are just as much on this journey as you.

Wedding Fairs So, he has finally popped the question and you have agreed to marry him! Congratulations, but soon it dawns on you that actually there is so much to do and very little time to do it. There are so many options these days that the chances are that you will have so much spinning around in your head that you won’t know where to start. A dress for you, a suit for him, venue, food and drink. Table plans, invitations, flowers, cakes not to forget outfits and gifts for bridesmaids and ushers. There really is so much to think about that half way through the preparations, it wouldn’t be surprising if you wished you had hired a wedding planner! Thank heavens for the wedding fair, everything you could possibly think of to do with wedding all in one place.

Look on FaceBook or the fairs website to check out the number of suppliers that are showcasing. It may be that you have something very specific in mind say a certain style of floral display or a unique table favour. At a good wedding fair there should be plenty of options available that will give you ideas and options and also an idea of cost. Some fairs can be more expensive than others, for example The National Wedding show is £15 a ticket in advance with ‘on-thedoor-tickets’ starting at £20 per person. This can add up especially if you are taking your bridesmaids along too. However, this is a large and impressive show and if you simply want to gather as many ideas as possible then it is well worth a trip even if you come away only know what you don’t want!
Many couples planning a wedding visit at least one wedding fair as it is an event where different companies in the business of supplying goods for weddings come together to showcase their products and services. Everything that you can think of that is concerned with the wedding day will be available to see and sample and most importantly the providers themselves will be there. If you are short of inspiration or looking to make your budget stretch that little bit further then wedding fairs are great for viewing many different styles and designs from

Take photography for example, the photographer who has worked at a particular place on many occasions will know the best locations and hidden places to enhance your wedding portfolio. If they know the venue and have a good relationship with them then they may even be able to offer you

Take time to speak to as many suppliers as you can. Take samples, get brochures and have a chat about some of the ideas you have. They will be able to help you develop your ideas, suggests different ideas and options around your particular theme or plan. You will be able to see samples of work such as wedding stationary or floristry and

Added to which if the venue is recommending them then you have the added security that the supplier is reputable and will do a good job as they wouldn’t in any way want to risk that relationship. And of course there is the bargain hunting side of wedding fairs. The larger supplier may have deals or discounts that can be snapped up on the day. Many companies exhibiting wedding and bridesmaid dresses and accessories will have a sale and sample rails and you can pick up a real bargain. Don’t forget that things can be altered or shortened if you find a good seamstress so don’t think it has to be a perfect fit. It is worth asking the particular company if in fact they do alterations. All in all the wedding fair can be a great source of inspiration and for those short of time a one stop hit of everything you can think of to do with weddings and probably things that you haven’t thought of too!

Angry fires that quickly spread, panick set in, alongside the dread,. of watching how close the flames were travelling, enormity then quickly started unravelling,. How could this happen so close to us all, ferocious flames growing so tall., The sky turned black, filled with smoke, fear of people starting to choke,. Emergency services a vast majority, taking control assuming authority, Thank god for those people, with knowledge and skill, who fought the fires, a bitter pill, that victims have had to painfully swallow, people bereft and left feeling hollow., Houses on fire, burnt to the ground, the crackling of branches, the dulcet sound. Sirens, tractors, engines so loud, 28
surrounding the area, alarming the crowd, People standing in shock, disbelief, From everyday living to total grief, They called it an apocalyptic blaze in fields where our wildlife loved to graze. The firefighters, police, farmers, volunteers, doing their best to allay people’s fears Whilst trying to keep some order and calm, And making sure of no ill harm., People with courage being so brave, on a day that was gruelling, scary and grave, But somehow order was put into place, for the efforts of services, fighting at pace, Against all the odds, the raging heat, tirelessly fighting, they wouldn’t be beat Finally the fires were under control, safety and order their ultimate goal., For firefighters risk their lives each day, but since this disaster I hope and pray, They are recognised for their sheer tenacity, bravery shown at the highest capacity., We pray for the victims who’ve suffered such pain, and hope in time they may regain, hope, a future some kind of healing, For we can only imagine how they are feeling., Nothing compares and nothing measures, to loosing their homes, their life long treasures. summer diary Summer has been in full swing for Nick and Royston, with a calendar filled with celebrations, special occasions and memorable escapes. From milestone birthdays and Royal Ascot to charity fundraising and a luxurious Devon retreat, it has certainly been a season to remember.
JUNE’S 70TH CELEBRATION Friendship is something Nick and Royston treasure, so when their dear friend June celebrated her 70th birthday, it was the perfect excuse to host a very special weekend. June and Tim Buckley were welcomed with a few glasses of champagne before enjoying an afternoon shopping in Knutsford, followed by lunch at Piccolino. After a relaxing afternoon, it was time to dress for the evening’s celebrations at San Carlo in Alderley Edge, where excellent food, great company and plenty of laughter set the tone for a memorable night. Naturally, the celebrations continued with a visit to a few local bars - because landmark birthdays deserve to be celebrated in style.

Invited by friends to join them in the prestigious Royal Enclosure, Nick and Royston donned their morning suits and top hats for one of Britain’s most iconic sporting and social occasions. The day offered everything Ascot is renowned for - world-class racing, elegant fashion and the opportunity to catch up with longstanding friends while making a few new ones along the way. With several winning bets adding to the excitement, it proved to be a truly memorable day.
ASGARD CHARITY BALL Over the months, while Asgard Builders transformed Nick and Royston’s home, a valued friendship also developed. They were delighted to accept an invitation to Asgard’s inaugural Charity Ball at South Staffordshire Golf Club, raising funds for Compton Care - a charity that holds a special place in the hearts of Nick, Royston and many across Wolverhampton. Guests were welcomed with champagne before enjoying an excellent three-course dinner. An exciting charity auction generated enthusiastic bidding, followed by an evening of dancing and celebration. Joined by friends, including Claudia Sharples, guests helped raise an impressive £7,000 for Compton Care. Judging by the success of the evening, this promises to become a much-anticipated annual event.

BEEF PORK AND SMOKED HAM RAGU PARPADELLE Serves 6 COOKING TIME 3.5 HOURS
500g braising beef (such as chuck or brisket), cut into 2cm cubes 250g smoked ham joint, cut into small cubes 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely diced 2 carrots, finely diced 2 celery sticks, peeled and finely diced
Ingredients ragu 500g pork shoulder, cut into 2cm cubes 38
Our Food & Drink 6 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp tomato purée 250ml full-bodied red wine 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes 500ml good quality beef stock 2 bay leaves 2 tsp fresh oregano 1 tsp fresh thyme 1 tsp fennel seeds, lightly crushed (optional but recommended) 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp dried wild mushroom powder (optional) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Add the tomato purée and cook for 2 minutes before pouring in the red wine. Allow it to bubble until reduced by around half. Return the pork and beef to the pan, then add the chopped tomatoes, beef stock, bay leaves, oregano, thyme, fennel seeds and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover with the lid slightly ajar and cook on a very low heat for 3 to 3½ hours, stirring occasionally, until the pork is meltingly tender and the beef is soft enough to break apart with a spoon. Using two forks, gently pull some of the larger pieces of pork and beef apart while leaving plenty of chunky pieces for texture.
PARPADELLE 600g Italian '00' flour, plus extra for dusting 6 large free-range eggs 1 tbsp olive oil (optional)
PARPADELLE Tip the flour onto a clean work surface and make a large well in the centre.
EQUIPMENT
Crack the eggs into the middle and add the olive oil, if using a fork, gradually draw the flour into the eggs until a dough begins to form. Knead for 10 minutes until smooth, elastic and silky.

Wrap in cling film or beeswax wrap and rest for at least 30 minutes. Divide the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece through a pasta machine, reducing the thickness one setting at a time until about 1.5mm thick (setting 6 on most machines).
METHOD RAGU
Dust lightly with flour, roll loosely and cut into 2cm-wide ribbons. Unroll and dust lightly with flour until ready to cook.
Season the pork and beef generously. Heat half the olive oil in a large casserole over a high heat and brown the meat in batches until deeply caramelised. Remove and set aside.
Cook the pappardelle in a large pan of wellsalted boiling water for 2–3 minutes. Reserve a little pasta water before draining.
Add the remaining oil and cook the smoked ham for 4–5 minutes until it starts to colour and releases some of its fat.
Stir the butter and Parmesan into the ragù. Toss the pasta through the sauce, adding a splash of pasta water if needed to create a silky finish.
Add the onion, carrot and celery, reducing the heat to medium. Cook gently for 10–12 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.
Serve with extra Parmesan, parsley and plenty of cracked black pepper.

METHOD MAKE THE BASE Crush the digestive biscuits into fine crumbs. Mix with the melted butter, brown sugar and sea salt.
Ingredients FOR THE BASE
Press firmly into the base of a 23cm springform tin. Chill for 30 minutes.
300g digestive biscuits 100g unsalted butter, melted 1 tbsp soft light brown sugar Pinch of sea salt
PREPARE THE FILLING Beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the icing sugar and vanilla. Fold in the salted caramel.
FOR THE FILLING 600g full-fat cream cheese, room temperature 300ml double cream 100g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 150g salted caramel sauce, plus extra for serving 150g Crunchie or homemade honeycomb, roughly chopped
In a separate bowl, whip the double cream to soft peaks before folding into the cheesecake mixture. Finally, gently fold through the chopped honeycomb.
ASSEMBLE
TO DECORATE
Spoon the filling onto the chilled biscuit base. Level the surface with a palette knife.

Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church
EXPLOrING GOA by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist The Sé Cathedral, the largest church in India, is also located in Old Goa. The cathedral, completed in 1619 was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese over a Muslim army, which resulted in the capture of Goa. This spectacular building reflects the Portuguese –Manueline architecture and features an impressive Tuscan exterior and a magnificent Corinthian interior, where several elaborate paintings are displayed and the baptismal font, dating back to 1532, was used by St. Francis Xavier.
Goa is India’s smallest and wealthiest state attracting more than two million tourists annually, drawn to its beautiful beaches thronged with swaying palm trees, the sedate pace of life and World Heritage architecture. Goa, ruled by the Portuguese for nearly 500 years, offers visitors a fascinating insight into a rich and vibrant culture and a colourful history. To discover Goa’s historical Portuguese influence I visited the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site and an outstanding example of baroque architecture. Located in Old Goa, the basilica is the final resting place of St. Francis Xavier, a Basque Roman Catholic missionary who co founded the Society of Jesus. Known as the Apostle of the Indies he is considered one of the most notable missionaries and pilgrims from all over the world visit this site to view his elaborately decorated silver casket. The Basilica, consecrated in 1605, is recognised as a landmark of Christianity and I was enthralled.
Panaji, the capital of Goa, lies on the banks of the Madovi River and on the main square is another striking example of baroque architecture. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, surrounded by tall palm trees, eatures an ornate white façade with a large church bell, which was installed in 1871. This beautiful church was once a chapel, built by the Portuguese in 1541. Panaji, at that time, was the first port of call for Portuguese vessels sailing from Lisbon and the ship’s crews would frequent the chapel. The church was rebuilt in 1691 and is one of Goa’s main attractions. 46
Our Travel Goa offers an extensive selection of exotic beaches including Baga Beach, known for its crowded parties, enthusiastic nightlife and an abundance of beach shacks serving fresh seafood dishes. The popular water sports and dolphin cruises attract the hordes and national wind surfing competitions take place every year from September to November. After my explorations I headed to the Taj Exotica Resort, which covers 56 acres and is located at Benaulim, a one hour drive from Panaji. On arrival, I was escorted to the checkin desk in a flash and I selected a luxury suite measuring 115 square metres. Located in the resort’s main building this sumptuously furnished suite, facing the Arabian Sea, consists of a separate living room with plush seating and a dining area and a bedroom featuring a large double bed swathed in cool, crisp linens and plump pillows. After a comfortable and deep slumber I headed for the Sala Da Pranzo for breakfast. I ordered the delicious homemade pancakes with maple syrup and a piping hot cup of tea and I decided to head for the hotel’s pool and selected a comfortable sun lounger. I ordered a glass of iced fresh orange juice and held my glass aloft to make a toast to gorgeous Goa and then I swiftly embarked on a wonderful snooze.
