Summer Tech Program builds on lessons learned at school More than 140 students entering grades four through nine participated in the annual Lincoln Public Schools Summer Technology Program, which was held over two, one-week sessions in July. Courses were held at the Bryan Community Focus Program building near 48th and O streets. Students could sign up for a variety of courses, which met for three hours a day. Courses included WeDo Lego Robotics, Digital Art and Design, and Creating Animations and Games with Bloxels. The program has evolved and grown during its more than 20 years - enrollment was 60 students when it began - but one thing hasn’t changed: It offers students the opportunity to hone the creative and critical thinking skills they developed from August through May.

Irving Middle School business teacher Patrick Fielder taught the WeDo Lego Robotics course this summer. “It's really collaborative. In the summer I’m more of a facilitator than a teacher,” he said. “It's really easy for the kids to pick this stuff up. Kids are a lot more resilient and resourceful in this stuff than a lot of adults give them credit for. They are a lot more willing to try things out - and that's really what this is about.” Eloise, a fifth-grader at Elliott Elementary School, participated in Fielder’s class. “I think it's pretty cool that you can still do coding in the summer,” she said. “I think it's really fun.”

American Indian students explore focus programs A group of American Indian students from Lincoln Public Schools on July 28 were able to spend a day of exploration at both the Arts & Humanities and Science focus programs, an experience that included discovering turtles and crawdads at Antelope Park Creek, dissecting frogs and tie-dying t-shirts. The 10 middle school students from across LPS also heard multiple presentations about the two focus programs, both from teachers and administrators, and current students. LPS Director of Strategic Initiatives and Focus Programs James Blake said younger students aren’t used to choosing alternate options when it comes to school. He hopes such an immersive experience opens their eyes to their options when they enter high school. “Some people may have a misconception that these focus programs are ‘honors’ programs. This is understandable because we have so many engaged and curious students,” Blake said. “However, we serve the spectrum of all types of learners. We are not judging them on perceived academic ability when they apply. Participating in this day hopefully prevents these possible barriers to application.” The trip was organized by the LPS Federal Programs Department’s Indian Education staff and funded through the American Indian Youth Demonstration Grant. “The grant has made it possible for our students to have unique experiences that broaden their views of what their futures can hold,” said LPS American Indian Youth Demonstration Grant Coordinator Barbara Buttes. Blake added that these focus programs don’t currently reflect the demographic makeup of LPS students as a whole, including racial diversity. It’s an issue the focus programs - and the school district as a whole - is working to address. “We hope efforts like this help increase the number and diversity of students applying to our programs,” he said. Both focus programs are for students in grades nine through 12. Students spend part of their mornings at their home high school before attending their focus program for the rest of the day. Transportation is provided. Students can still take part in extracurricular activities, clubs and events at their home high school.

August TeamMates of the Month

Julie and Madi: Curiosity and learning “Both of my parents are educators, so I grew up really believing in the importance of having someone that you could trust and talk to and was always there for you,” says Julie. Her friend Lynne, a TeamMates staff member, encouraged Julie to mentor because she knew she would make a great listener and confidante. “She is trustworthy, nonjudgmental, fun, and creative,” Lynne says. Julie’s TeamMate, Madi, agrees. Asked her favorite thing about Julie, she says, “Everything! She’s amazing and wonderful.” The fondness is mutual. “Madi is amazing and wonderful. She’s smart and she’s mature,” says Julie. “You have this wisdom about you that you don’t always see in a grown-up, let alone a seventh grader.” They’ll begin their fifth school year together later this month. Originally matched at Roper Elementary School, Madi and Julie now meet at Park Middle School, where they enjoy playing games and researching whatever strikes their curiosity. After checking out the turtles in Roper’s courtyard, the pair learned

more than they anticipated through their research afterwards. “Remember how they breathe?” Julie asks, making them both giggle. (The answer: through their rear ends). “We are both really curious, so we’ll start talking about something and by the time we get done we’re on a completely different thing. We start following these breadcrumbs and trails, and pretty soon she’ll have

15 windows open on her Chromebook,” says Julie. Their curiosity has also helped them get to know one another and find their commonalities. Both inquisitive people who love caretaking children, the most specific mutual interest is their favorite food - mashed potatoes. Madi acknowledges that Team-

Mates’ model of matching based upon common interests works. “They take their time to think about how people have similar things in common,” she says. “It’s easier for us to understand each other more.” “I learn so much from her,” says Julie. “We’ve said that from the very beginning, that we learn a lot from each other.”

Southwest students perform in festival Lincoln Southwest High School was one of only 13 high schools from across the country chosen to perform this summer in the International Thespian Festival, a prestigious annual event that was held virtually this year. Southwest students, directed by Bob Henrichs, performed “Newsies: The Broadway Musical.” Southwest also was invited in 2007 and 2015. Southwest is the only Nebraska school to be invited in the last 30 years. The Educational Theatre Association puts on the festival to celebrate students' achievements in the performing arts. In addition to their performance, drama students and teachers can participate in workshops, interact with colleges in a college fair and audition process, and meet with industry leaders and Broadway professionals.

Lincoln High debate coach earns national honor The National Speech & Debate Association has honored the Lincoln High School debate coach for her dedication to improving awareness and willingness to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities. The organization named Victoria Freeman the recipient of the 2021 James M. Copeland High School Coach of the Year Award. Freeman also was honored with a formal resolution at the May 25 Lincoln Board of Education meeting. Freeman said she was both excited and humbled to win the award. “It is great to see the efforts and work of so many people to make speech and debate a more inclusive space acknowledged in such a profound way. I wholeheartedly believe that as a community, we can rise to confront the challenges in front of us today - not only of accessibility for those with disabilities but also the issues of sexism, racism, and other forms of bigotry within the speech and debate activity and society more broadly,” said Freeman, who teaches science at Lincoln High. “The thing I love about speech and debate, more than anything else, is that it empowers students with the skills to communicate and advocate effectively.” Lincoln Southwest High School Debate Coach Toni Heimes said Freeman’s knowledge of tournament logistics and her work to transition competitions to an online setting during the pandemic have been invaluable. But, Heimes added, “Most importantly, Victoria's work with equity and inclusion in the debate space has made her a crucial voice in our community.”

Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Growing School Gardens: Summer Garden Gathering Many school buildings were quiet over the summer, but their gardens were thriving. In August, LPS Sustainability partnered with Community Crops to host a “School Garden Gathering” at Beattie Elementary. The day started with a tour provided by Beattie master gardener Karen Creswell, who highlighted the many beautiful gardens and outdoor learning spaces that have been built there over 20 years. The tour was followed by settling inside to hear more school garden stories from Calvert Elementary School, Sheridan Elementary School, Dawes Middle School and Lefler Middle School. The garden gathering provided a space for schools to come together and share the successes and struggles with starting and maintaining an outdoor space. Over 30 school staff, CLC staff, community partners and volunteers registered for the August gathering. Experience in outdoor spaces ranged from beginners to experts, which was a great mix for learning and fresh ideas. Throughout the gathering, conversations revolved around student and staff engagement with outdoor spaces, funding opportunities, community support, planting schedules and curriculum connections. Participants were encouraged by what they heard and were ready to make next steps, many already connecting with community partners in the room, including Nebraska Game and Parks, Nebraska Forest Service and Lincoln Electric System. Following the success and excitement from this first event, garden gatherings will be held quarterly to allow for further networking and training related to outdoor learning spaces. The LPS Sustainability Team strives to provide support for outdoor learning spaces in order to bring equal engagement opportunities for all students across the district. Currently, only about half of LPS schools have a designated garden or outdoor classroom space. If you are interested in helping grow outdoor learning spaces at LPS sites, please reach out to your nearby school and ask how you can get involved or contact the Sustainability Team at sustainability@lps.org.

Jones the new director of The Career Academy This summer Southeast Community College (SCC) and Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) selected Josh Jones as the director of The Career Academy (TCA). Jones served as interim director since July 2020. Prior to that he was the TCA coordinator.

He has the vision, energy and dedication to ensure that TCA leverages its past successes and continues to expand to meet the needs of its students, industry partners and communities.”

Jones will continue to lead TCA at a time of tremendous growth, both in academic offerings and enrollment. TCA began the 2021-22 school year with just under 700 students enrolled in 18 career-oriented pathways. Prior to joining TCA, Jones was assistant principal at Elliott Elementary School and a special education teacher at Lincoln Southeast High School. Before joining LPS, he held numer-

ous leadership positions with Aurora Public Schools in Colorado. Jones earned his Educational Specialist degree from the University of Colorado at Denver, his Master of Science in Special Education and Elementary Education from Mercy College in New York City, and his Bachelor of Arts in Jewish History from The Ohio State University.

Ashelford new LPS director of nutrition services This summer Lincoln Public Schools named Andrew Ashelford its new director of nutrition services. Ashelford takes over for Edith Zumwalt, who is retiring after 31 years with LPS.

Breakfast Programs, monitoring federal and local health codes, and coordinating the menu, operation, marketing and annual $700,000 budget of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

Ashelford previously served as a nutrition services supervisor for LPS, a position he held since 2012. In this role he supervised the foodservice operations at 19 schools, with 19 managers and roughly 100 employees. His other duties included monitoring the regulations of the National School Lunch and

fast and half lunch) during the spring and summer of 2020 when schools shut down. • LPS served more than 3,165,000 lunches and 965,000 breakfast meals during the 2020-22. LPS also served more than 11,000 remote learner lunches and 11,000 remote learner breakfasts. • There are 85 staff members who worked through the pandemic to make sure Lincoln children ages birth-18 had access to healthy meals from March until July 2020.

Southwest High School starts year with new principal Lincoln Public Schools announced this summer that John Matzen is the new principal at Southwest High School. Matzen follows Mike Gillotti, who accepted a position with the school district in Bettendorf, Iowa. Matzen served as associate principal at Southwest since 2018. Prior to that, he spent 13 years at Lincoln North Star High School, where he was a business teacher, instructional coordinator and associate principal.

Matzen earned his Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Doane College and his Certification in Business Education, Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “John’s energy and passion for Southwest make him a great fit for this new leadership role,” said Matt Larson, associate superintendent

for instruction. “He has an ideal mix of teaching, administrative and leadership experience that will continue to serve the Southwest community well.” Eric Weber, associate superintendent for human resources, added, “John brings a wealth of knowledge and experience within LPS, and this will be a great opportunity for continued growth at Southwest.”

Summer school graduation 2021 More than 140 seniors from Lincoln Public Schools completed their graduation requirements by finishing six weeks of summer school this year. LPS hosted high school summer school at North Star and Southeast. After students finished their final class for the day, they were able to pick up their diplomas and pose for pictures in their caps and gowns.

Ada Robinson Elementary underway Family, friends, former colleagues and students, LPS administrators and members of the Lincoln Board of Education gathered Sunday, May 23, at the future site of Robinson Elementary in northeast Lincoln. The guest of honor was Ada Robinson, the school's namesake, who taught at Clinton Elementary School for 37 years. The new school, funded by the voter-approved 2020 Bond Issue, is set to open in fall 2022.

No better meal deal in town: Free meals at LPS By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS Wellness Facilitator

All LPS students may receive free breakfast and free lunch at school each day this school year, regardless of family income history. Let me repeat that: yes, your student’s school meal will be at no cost to you. The only items that will cost anything out of pocket will be additional items outside of the reimbursable school meal. Students will be required to choose all meal components to reach a school reimbursable meal.

How do I know what is on the menu for breakfast and lunch? LPS Nutrition Services has an excellent website, sharing information about meals and pictures of offered items specific to the school. Go to https://schools.mealviewer.com/district/lincolnne

This can have a major benefit for both your personal costs as well as your student’s nutrition. Imagine not having to worry about packing a lunch? Skipping the breakfast mess as you run out the door to school in the morning? LPS is excited about this opportunity to ensure better health and learning for students during the 2021-22 school year. My student has not previously taken advantage of school breakfast, what time is it served? Please check your school

How is this free meal opportunity possible? Not to get too technical, but it is about some changes in how schools are being reimbursed for serving school meals and how these are counted within the USDA meal program. LPS Nutrition Services determined that with the current reimbursement options available that schools would be able to convert to this method to help keep dollars in the pockets of student families since the pandemic began. Do we still need to fill out the free and reduced paperwork? For other benefits, absolutely. Completing a free or reduced meal benefit application may qualify you for P-EBT payments and fee waiver items, such as band or string in-

struments, driver education, Learn to Dream scholarships, etc. That paperwork also impacts access to other sliding scale programs within LPS, so for those who are in the ballpark financially, absolutely. It is well worth your time for the other opportunities completing this bit of paperwork will provide. Do we still need to have funds in a meal account for our student? That depends on your family. If you have your student bring a lunch and buy milk from the school a-la-carte, yes. Also, if you have a student who chooses to buy items outside of the standard meal, such as a second entrée or other item if available via the a-la carte system, they would need

money in their account to purchase those items. Was this available last year? Yes, it was. However, with the complications of communication during the pandemic, we wanted to start the year with families aware of these resources. We hope this year that students and families take full advantage of these meal opportunities. Get excited for a healthy school year with students in classrooms with optimal nutrition available to support their classroom success. We are extremely happy to support education for all students by preventing hungry tummies entering classrooms.

LPS marks milestone in construction of new high school

Lincoln Public Schools and its construction partners on Friday, July 23 held a symbolic "topping out ceremony" for its new Lincoln Northwest High School currently under construction. The ceremony was held at the southeast corner of the construction site, which is at Northwest Holdredge and North 48th streets. A topping out ceremony is typically led by a construction project's ironworkers. It celebrates the completion of the skeleton of the building structure or that the building has reached its final height. It’s a symbol of growth and good luck for the remainder of the building project. On Friday, ironworkers placed a small evergreen tree and American flag on a beam after it was lowered into place at the top of what will be the school’s main entrance. The tree signifies completing a project with no worker injuries. On hand for the event were representatives from Patriot Steel Erection, Hausmann Construction and Clark & Enersen architectural firm, as well as Lincoln Board of Education members Lanny Boswell and Kathy Danek. LPS Associate Superintendent for Business Affairs Liz Standish addressed the crowd on hand. “The last major steel beam was just placed, which is a celebration, a major milestone,” Standish said. “We are excited. Lincoln Northwest High School is here behind me - and it's going to make a major mark in this area of the community.” Also in attendance was Cedric Cooper, who previously was the principal at Schoo Middle School and has been named principal at Northwest High School. “It's surreal to be out on the grounds of our school that's being built,” Cooper said. “This is a moment that I will never forget, and to be able to do this not only with the construction crew, but also with our school district and our board, is special.” Northwest High School will open in the fall of 2022. This project is being paid for through the 2020 Bond Fund, which voters overwhelmingly approved in February 2020.
