Award honors tradition of fine arts at Sheridan Elementary Sheridan Elementary School has been named one of two recipients for the 2021-22 NebraskARTS Award, recognizing schools and school districts that make a notable and worthwhile contribution to the arts and arts education. “This is really special, we are so excited to receive this award,” said Sheridan Principal Amy Clark. “We see this as a great match for us, an opportunity to share all the pieces we use to connect the arts to learning – a demonstration of how important the arts are to our school ... It puts Lincoln Public Schools and our Sheridan community on the map.” Clark said Sheridan has a grand tradition of fine arts and has found a broad variety of ways to engage students in the arts, including: • The school’s annual art fair, a celebration showcasing artwork from every single Sheridan student. • Annual fine arts presentations from each grade level. • An annual school musical. • Field trips through LPS. • A partnership with the Sheridan PTO to extend learning into the evenings. Clark said the award is especially meaningful to the elementary school as it “highlights the unique ways that we make curriculum connections and find ways for students to show who they are as individuals.” The award is presented by Nebraskans for the Arts (NFTA), a non-profit membership organization promoting the advancement of learning in and through the arts for all Nebraska residents.

Kendall and Leslie: Friendship at first sight Starting middle school a week or two late due to quarantining is not ideal, but Schoo sixth-grader Kendall’s worries were unfounded. “I was kind of nervous that everyone knew everyone else, but I made a ton of friends on the first day,” she says. “Her social skills have grown,” says her TeamMates mentor Leslie. “She’s outgoing, energetic, and welcoming.” Kendall finds she can still feel a little shy at times, though has never felt reserved with Leslie in their three years as TeamMates. “I remember they said she might be kind of nervous and might not talk a lot,” says Leslie. “Then I met her and we just hit it off. There was never any awkwardness.” “Instead of love at first sight, it was like friendship at first sight,” jokes Kendall. “After talking over the years she feeds me little tidbits of [personal] stuff, then we learn more and more about each other,” says Leslie. “It makes you realize that you don’t know what’s going on in people’s lives and everyone is different.” Kendall finds that meeting with Leslie every week has built her self-confidence. “I can be myself around her, so I started being myself at school,” she says. Leslie calls Kendall one of her favorite people, and says their meetings are the highlight of her week. When her workplace, Ameritas, continued to work remotely last school year, their in-person visits were especially refreshing. “I am a social person, so working from home was hard for me,” she recalls. “I looked forward to our meeting probably more than any other time in the week.”

They often play games or do craft activities, but one of their favorite memories arose from not having a planned activity one visit. “Kendall had her computer and put a bunch of random words into a wheel and spun it. We played charades, but the words were like ‘carpet, wall’. Trying to play charades as ‘paint’ was so dumb, but it was hilarious.” They remember having to stifle their laughter in the quiet school library. “It was so funny,” says Kendall. TeamMates mentors are “kind of like your best friend,” says Kendall. “It’s really fun to hang out with them.” Kendall looks forward to their future as TeamMates, especially “getting closer as we both grow up.”

Dawes Middle School named ‘Inspire School of the Year’ On Friday, the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools announced that Dawes Middle Schools was awarded the 2022 Inspire School of the Year Award to students and staff during a special assembly. "One of the best parts of being a superintendent is celebrating the success of staff and students," said Steve Joel, LPS superintendent, during the surprise announcement. "Dawes Middle School staff have worked extremely hard to help students achieve and create a positive culture here at Dawes; and principal Miller has worked to increase staff input and leadership, and also listens to student voices to build a positive culture. It is clear that Dawes Middle School values the lived experiences of all Dawes community members, and sees those experiences as strengths." To be considered for the Inspire School of the Year award, principals must detail the initiatives that have led to accomplishing considerable progress toward their school improvement plan. A selection committee comprised of community members, LPS District Office staff and the Foundation Board of Directors select the school that had the most significant impact on the students, staff, faculty and the community. “Dawes’ focus on building and strengthening their school community culture is evident in all that they do,” stated Wendy Van, president of the Foundation for LPS. “The improvements in student engagement in the last year and a half are a direct result of that effort and should be applauded.” As part of the award, Dawes Middle School will also receive a check for $5,000 to use on any upcoming project of their choice. Funding for the award was provided by Allstate. Principal Liz Miller told the crowd, "We've been named the Inspire School of the year because of you and because of our community. Students, Dawes is a success because of your energy, engagement and willingness to share your voices with us. Staff, Dawes is being honored because of you and your relentless hard work."

Each Inspire Award recipient was selected by their school principal for regularly going above and beyond, taking initiative and are a positive inspiration to others. Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Freight Farm to School If you drive by The Bay in Lincoln, you might notice a metal container in the parking lot. This metal freight container is actually growing food inside! Beyond School Bells has brought the first Freight Farm to Nebraska, which is a state-of-the-art hydroponic farm in a shipping container that produces the equivalent of a 2.5 acre farm. Unlike a traditional farm, this container allows plants to grow vertically, without soil, and requires very little water. Dakota Staggs from Beyond School Bells shared that “this farm uses only five to ten gallons of water per day, which is about 98% less water than traditional agriculture”. There are many exciting destinations planned for the Freight Farm food, and Lincoln Public Schools is fortunate to have two of their cafeterias be included in that list! Kale, bib, and red leaf lettuce were grown and freshly picked to be served in the cafeterias at Elliott Elementary and Lincoln High School less than 24 hours later. The first tubs arrived on a chilly morning in December. Cafeteria staff were amazed at the intense color and pristine quality. “Absolutely beautiful. It still takes my breath away every time we get a delivery,” said Lincoln High Cafeteria Manager Wendy Mathiason. After a quick trim to remove the root and soil plug, the remaining plant is fully edible, unlike most produce which requires additional trimming to remove wilted or damaged leaves. The mixture of lettuces were used for both side salads and chef salads, and they were a big hit with the students! Lincoln High noted an increase in daily salad consumption as well as a subsequent decrease in salad consumption on the days when the freight farm lettuce was not available or had all been used. The students definitely noticed and preferred the Freight Farm lettuce. Elliott students were excited to learn about the lettuce being grown fully indoors and also so close to Elliott school. Students and staff members were eager to try the lettuce and learn about this exciting program. Nearly all the students enthusiastically raised their hands when asked if they’d like to try some lettuce that “grew on a wall”. There was much appreciation that Elliott was chosen to receive the lettuce and be included in the partnership between Freight Farm Food and LPS Nutrition Services. The pictures that Farm to School volunteers brought to Elliott were a hit with our students. This connects well with existing Farm to School efforts in the district. The LPS Nutrition Services department strives to incorporate local foods, defined as a 250 mile radius, into the cafeteria when possible. From August 2021 to March 2022, over $800,000 of local purchases were made including; 3,600,763 cartons of milk; 138,768 chicken thighs;, and 6,456 pounds of apples and watermelons. “Using local produce is a fun way to engage with students, said Nutrition Services Director Andrew Ashelford. “When students know the story behind where the produce comes from, it seems like they are more likely to try it.” Hundreds of pounds of lettuce were donated for these first experiences with the greens, but it is the hope of Beyond School Bells and LPS Nutrition Services that this local food will become a regular product in these cafeterias in the future. “Not only is this an example of Farm to school, but Beyond School Bells is proud to engage students across Lincoln Public Schools in the farm itself so that students contribute to producing food for themselves, their peers, and their community,” Staggs said.

A meaningful summer for your kids By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness After two years of less physical activity and too much technology as entertainment globally, our kids are at an especially dangerous crossroads. Especially our teens and tweens. They may be hard-wiring life-long habits of a sedentary lifestyle and battle against all of the health issues that come with that choice. We didn’t mean for it to happen. We kept telling ourselves that this is temporary. Now, is it? That is ultimately up to us as parents. What future do we want for our kids? It is going to require of us as parents to take back the reigns and support the growth of our kids in different ways. Yes, this is going to take some consistent effort. But our kids are worth it. Take back technology limits. Kids will not and cannot find a healthy balance with technology themselves. The makers of tech are too crafty at keeping them hooked. They’ve got many of us adults too, right? Our kids’ best hope is to be part of activities that separate them from their technology for meaningful periods of time. Use new tools. As device designers have updated technology, they have added tools which can help you set time limits on devices, as well as some safety features for searches, but know that kids have a friend network of tech support helping them find work-arounds. You might find the best solution involves removing power cords and controllers until other activities are completed. Believe me. It’s effective. It cannot be an idle threat. The kids need to learn to expect it as part of your family plan. Make play pacts with friends. When you are determining households you let your child visit, work with the parents to determine what kids will

have access to when together. Do you have first and last names? Phone numbers for parents and the kids? What types of games do they let their kids play? Are they willing to team with you in getting kids to engage in play outside of screens? Do they have firearms in the home secured? Access to controlled substances? These temporarily awkward discussions can have life-saving impact for kids. Utilize our awesome Lincoln resources. From summer feeding programs, Community Learning Centers (aka CLCs), libraries, parks programs and more. A simple Google search can lead you to endless free resources for your family. Watch end of school year family newsletters for information specific to your community location. Kids thrive in structure. They are used to it and it helps them feel safe and secure. Take time to draw up a plan of what their day will look like throughout the summer and how it fits with your personal schedule. It doesn’t have to be extreme, but you might be amazed what a difference it makes if you build this schedule together. Schedules can set contact times which help you both feel secure and on track. Schedule times help limit whining and negotiations. If they have a favorite activity and a time assigned to it, they begin to look forward to the schedule. Try it. It works. Whatever we give our energy will grow. If kids spend hours shooting baskets, they get better at shooting baskets. Or reading. Or writing. Or doing art. Or singing and dancing. What do you want to grow in the life of your child? What do they want to see grow? Get together and share summer bucket lists. Then build a way to help support these opportunities come to life. Together, our efforts will build a brighter future for our children and our community. Make the most of this summer!

‘We’re motivated.’ LPS hosts Aspiring Diverse Educators Symposium Lincoln Public Schools hosted more than 50 students from elementary, middle, and high schools across the district who have expressed an interest in education for the annual Aspiring Diverse Educators Symposium on Monday, March 28. Students participated in the daylong event by engaging in meaningful discussion with diverse staff from across the district, and hearing presentations from special guests Amanda Morales, an associate professor in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education; Ebony McKiver, social studies education specialist for the Nebraska Department of Education; and Lee Perez, 2022 Nebraska Teacher of the Year from Alice Buffet Magnet School in Omaha. A central theme came to the surface early on in the day: What did it mean to students to have educators who looked like them? “I think it matters to me, mainly because I feel like I’m being empowered when I have teachers who look like me,” said Layla, a junior at Southeast High School. “I feel like I strive to do better because I want them to look at me and like, look at us go. We have this knowledge. We have this power. We’re motivated.” Hiring more diverse certificated staff is one of the goals the Lincoln Board of Education set back in August 2021. Guest presenters at Monday’s symposium said LPS is setting a strong foundation to achieve that goal. “I think what LPS is doing, especially when it comes to helping students of color, is really transformative and something that’s new that I really haven’t seen in other districts across the United States,” said Ebony McKiver, social studies education specialist for the Nebraska Dept. of Ed. “There’s really a focus to get to the root issues of what’s happening, why there is a gap in student achievement, why there are less teachers of color, why we don’t see as many students of color in honors in gifted programs.” LPS staff in attendance echoed those sentiments, noting the significance of the roundtable discussions that allowed students to ask questions of staff on a more personal level. “I think that’s so important in education that we work to help really all students,” said Falla Halsey, social studies teacher at the Arts and Human-

ities focus program. “Especially when we’re having in-group conversations, to help students feel seen and complete and their whole selves, and to make sure that folks aren’t feeling marginalized, and to celebrate them.” The day concluded with students coming back together to reflect on the discussions of the day, and a quote from TED Talk educator Rita Pierson displayed up on the projector as a parting reminder: “Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.”
