Moore students lead effort to collect, translate children’s books A trio of Moore Middle School students started with a relatively modest idea: Organizing a book drive for elementary schools throughout the city, particularly those with a high percentage of students who come from low-income families. The service learning project would be part of their participation in Destination Imagination, a national nonprofit organization that encourages student innovation and community service through state and global competitions.

From there, the idea grew...and grew...and grew. The final result: Moore students Lily Ardinger Stibal, Matthew Killham and Darian Kauk collected more than 800 children’s books. They worked with bilingual liaisons from Lincoln Public Schools to have 17 of those books translated into seven different languages for English Learning Learner students at West Lincoln Elementary School. Finally, the Moore students wrote a play about the project and performed it for the West Lincoln students on April 5 before presenting the books to Principal Scott Schwartz.

And they are starting at a good place. They were intentional about wanting to see what the issues within our community are.”

“We all love to read and we know that not everybody has the same opportunity as us to read,” said Kauk, a seventh-grader. “It was so much fun to present them to the kids and see their faces when we presented all of the books to them.”

The Moore students chose books with fewer words and plenty of space on their pages for translations to be included on stickers next to the English. At Friday’s event inside the West Lincoln library, six LPS bilingual liaisons each read a book in a different language for the roughly 20 ELL students in the audience, as well as their parents who participate in the LPS Family Literacy Program. Each student in the audience spoke one of the translated languages, which included Russian, Spanish, Kurdish and Vietnamese. (Overall, there are roughly 150 languages spoken by LPS students.) Rios Pohirieth said this project, spearheaded by middle school students, can serve as a valuable lesson for people of any age.

“I may not know you, but I can learn by doing a little bit of research, by asking you questions, by trying to collaborate with you, in the hopes that through that process I can help.” Update: The Moore students performed the play about their service-learning project at the state Destination Imagination competition in Kearney. They placed first at the middle-school level and also won the Project Outreach Torchbearer Award, which honors teams whose solutions have had an extraordinary impact on their communities. The students will participate in the global competition in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 22-25. They’ll join about 17,000 other students representing 1,400 teams from 40 states and 20 countries.

May TeamMates of the Month

Verla and Rose: Rooted and Blooming Verla met Rose during one of the most difficult years of her life - the year she and her family were coping with the death of her older brother. Rose was a fourth-grader at the time, and her mother made the decision to request a TeamMate to support her daughter. Verla was new to Lincoln, finding her place in the community through various clubs and activities. Her son advised her to get involved in TeamMates. She did, and a few weeks later she met a very shy girl at Adams Elementary School. During their initial meeting, Verla observed Rose as she found a tiny scrap of paper and began drawing. Art seemed to be Rose’s safe place, and Verla saw she was talented. Their next meeting, Verla came equipped with a box of art supplies so that Rose could draw while they talked. The art box stayed at the school, and at each visit it was pulled out. “I still have an eraser from that box,” Rose says. She pulls out a well-used, white eraser from her backpack. “It’s my favorite.” It took months before Rose was willing to trust Verla, but over time, the walls came down and a strong bond formed. More than eight years later, the two have an amazing connection and great admiration for one other. “She’s like a rose that has opened up and blossomed,” Verla says. “I’m so glad to see that she has many interests, and she is so intelligent.” In middle school Rose became interested in music, and over the course of high school she has played the clarinet in Jazz Band, Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. Verla has attended many concerts, as well as diving meets and Color Guard competitions. Just last month Rose received recognition for her 4.0-plus grade point average that she has maintained for the past three years, and between academic and extra-curricular commitments, she makes time to volunteer at FoodNet. Like most teens, Rose has faced challenges, including bullying. A few times she has met Verla with tears in her eyes. “It’s nice to have someone to talk to who doesn’t demand answers.” With Verla’s support, Rose has learned to set boundaries, recognize toxic situations and seek assistance. “Rose realizes that it’s okay to ask for help, a good lesson to learn so young,” Verla says. Rose and Verla’s relationship has produced many moments of joy. “Just last week we were playing Jenga in the quiet library, and every time the stack of blocks was knocked down – well, it was just hilarious,” says Rose. “Meeting with Verla gives me something to look forward to each week.” Now on the cusp of graduating from high school, Rose is apprehensive about the changes.

“College is another big step,” she says. “Verla has provided recommendations for each scholarship and helped me with some of the paperwork.” She plans to pursue nursing at the University of Nebraska to receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She has completed a phlebotomy class and hopes to work at a hospital drawing blood once she graduates from Lincoln Southeast High School in May. Rose feels more grounded because of Verla’s presence in her life. “She’s been a constant for me. TeamMates has given me a defined space to talk, to have someone there for me, willing to hang out, and listen without judgment.” Rose’s eyes glisten with emotion. “Verla is no blood relation to me but such an important part of my life.” Their bond of friendship will continue. Verla and Rose are considering the TeamMates’ post-secondary program, TeamMates Plus. “I want to help Rose to be strong in whatever happens in her life,” says Verla. “We will definitely continue our relationship. We cannot simply drop a nine-year bond.”

What’s in a name? A couple’s love for Elliott Elementary Amber and Cailen O’Shea’s love for Elliott Elementary School runs in the family. Amber has taught first grade at the school just south of 25th and O streets for five years — and hopes she never has to leave. Cailen, her husband, also taught there for one year and still proudly sports an Elliott t-shirt. His grandmother, Mary O’Shea, taught fourth grade at Elliott for 15 years. And now the family’s connection to the school has been passed on to another generation. The O’Sheas named their newly born son Elliott in honor of the school they have grown to love like family. “It’s just a great school,” Amber said. “It’s had a big impact,” Cailen added. Baby Elliott was born Feb. 6. Amber and Cailen initially included Elliott on their list of potential names, then removed it. They added it back to the list on their way to the hospital. After their baby was born, they looked over the potential names again. Finley, Henry, Cormac... “We were like, ‘He doesn’t look like any of these other names. He’s Elliott. He looks like an Elliott,’” Amber said. The couple met during college when they worked together at the Dawes Middle School Community Learning Center after-school program. Amber always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Cailen “hated school” as a child and decided to become an educator to affect students who might feel the same away. “I wanted to take that kid who I saw myself in and say, ‘You can do something if you want to. I’m going to make

it interesting for you,’” he said. Cailen taught fifth grade at Elliott before joining Arnold Elementary School as an instructional technology coach. Now he’s a full-time student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln pursuing a doctorate degree in educational leadership and higher education — still wanting to make an impact on students but in a different way. Amber returned to Elliott (the school) this week. It’s tough being away from Elliott (her baby) but she said it’s great seeing her students again. After all, they’re family, too.

ive educators were selected from 500 written nominations to be honored as part of the annual Lincoln Public Schools Thank You Teacher celebration, which asks students throughout the community to write about how a favorite teacher impacted their lives. On April 2, the winning educators and students were formally recognized during a special reception and program in the board room at LPS District Office. The original event to honor the winners, scheduled for March 7 at the Governor’s Mansion, was cancelled due to inclement year. The event may have been delayed but its emotional impact remained the same. Students and colleagues read their nominating letters aloud, followed by brief remarks from the winning educators – often times followed by tears from everyone involved and many in the audience. “You’re amazing, darling, and I want you to remember you had a third-grade teacher who was crazy about you,” said one of the honorees, Meadow Lane Elementary School teacher Ardis Koehn, speaking to her nominating student, Jackie Stoebner.

Student project celebrates stories of Latinos in Nebraska A special event March 29 celebrated the work of students from Lincoln Northeast High School, Lincoln North Star High School and Lincoln High School who have completed an oral history project that celebrates the stories of Latinos in Nebraska. The roughly 60 students involved in the event are enrolled in a course, Spanish for Spanish Speakers - Level Three, designed for students who already speak Spanish at home. In this course, they’re able to expand their vocabulary and maintain the Spanish they already know through reading and studying history. For this project, students interviewed family or friends who were born outside the United States of America about their life experiences, both

in their native countries and in Nebraska. They recorded the interviews and wrote essays in Spanish about what they learned. The students also created posters that feature select responses and photos of those who were interviewed. The March 29 event, “Nuestros Tesoros: Historias Reales De Las Vidas Latinas De Lincoln” (Our Treasures: Real Stories of Lincoln's Latino Lives), was at El Centro De Las Américas and allowed students to share their work with family and friends.

High energy, Whole Brain Teaching at Sheridan Elementary Someone new to Emily Wiebeck’s third-grade classroom at Sheridan Elementary School might think she looks as much like a musical conductor as a teacher. Her arms and hands dart and weave and wave in every direction throughout the day. “I’m a high-energy person.” She’s not leading a musical ensemble, though. She’s guiding her 23 students through lessons in reading, writing and math using an instructional method called Whole Brain Teaching. This method is intended to maximize student engagement by focusing on mimicry, which is considered a natural way for the brain to learn. Whole Brain Teaching gets its name from the idea that if you’re engaging multiple parts of the brain while learning - through speaking, listening, seeing, moving - you can better retain the subject matter. So when Wiebeck makes a hand motion to represent an apostrophe, for example, her students mimic the hand motion. When she makes a noise or says a word to represent something being learned - “zoop!” in the case of an apostrophe - her students repeat it or say it in unison with her. “They still remember these things three years later because we’re doing them constantly,” said Wiebeck, who taught at Elliott Elementary School and Roper Elementary School before joining Sheridan four years ago. There’s a book’s worth of specific techniques

and strategies for Whole Brain Teaching, but Wiebeck concentrates on three when she’s teaching a new concept: • “Hands and Eyes” - Students close their hands and listen to her explain the material. • “Mirrors Up With Words” - Students repeat what she says and mimic her actions. • “Teach-Okay!” - Students use “Mirrors Up With Words” to teach a partner what they just learned. “It’s also about community because they’re learning from each other and building on each other,” Wiebeck said. “That’s a huge part of this - the classroom community.” Wiebeck first learned about Whole Brain Teaching seven years ago as she began her classroom career. Since then, she has slowly built her knowledge and use of the method. Two years ago, her colleagues at Sheridan took notice and wanted to learn more. Last year, Sheridan teachers used time during four of their early-release staff development days to learn from a Whole Brain Teaching trainer via web conferencing. Viviana Morales, a fellow teacher and the instructional coach at Sheridan, said Wiebeck's dedication to Whole Brain Teaching has had a major impact on her students. "It helps her combine classroom management, flexible learning for all students, constant formative assessment for next steps and all the while keeping students enthusiastically engaged," Morales said. "It's a class where we'd all love to learn."

Wiebeck stresses that she’s by no means an expert on Whole Brain Teaching, nor is she the only teacher at Sheridan who is now a practitioner. “There are so many amazing teachers here who are implementing Whole Brain Teaching with their own twist.” She also is quick to point out that it’s certainly not the only effective way to teach. But it works for her. “It’s been life changing.” Not to mention tiring.

2019 GRADUATION CEREMONY INFORMATION The Lincoln Public Schools class of 2019 will celebrate graduation ceremonies on Sunday, May 26 – for all six high schools. LPS high school graduation ceremonies for 2019 are scheduled as follows: Pinnacle Bank Arena North Star High School – noon Lincoln High School – 3:00 p.m Southwest High School – 6:00 p.m. Bob Devaney Sports Center Lincoln East School – 1:30 p.m. Southeast High School – 4:30 p.m. Northeast High School – 7:30 p.m. The Bryan Community Focus Program will hold graduation ceremonies at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in the Lincoln East High School auditorium.

Appropriate Dress Participating seniors must wear the traditional graduation gowns, caps and tassels. We would like all students to dress appropriately for a dignified ceremony. Tassels will be worn over the right eye. Mortarboards are to be worn with the flat surface horizontal. • Please leave purses or bags (or any other valuable) with family or at home. • Nuisance items (e.g. sunglasses) will not be allowed in the arena. • Keep your mortarboards and gowns neat. No writing or taping will be allowed.

Graduation Tips

Distracting and discourteous behavior will not be tolerated. We request that family members and students leave air horns and other noisemakers, balloons and other items which might cause a distraction at home. Seniors who do not wish to abide by these expectations should not plan to attend the ceremony, which has always been optional. If a student is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, he/she will be ticketed by the police and will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.

For those attending, here are some tips to help ensure you fully enjoy the event:

Seating at Graduation The configuration of the seating and stage does not allow for parents or family members to be on the floor before, during or after the graduation ceremony. This includes access to the floor for photographs during the ceremony. Only graduates and faculty members are allowed on the floor. A professional photographer will be taking individual photos of graduates as they receive their diplomas. The only exception to this is at the Bob Devaney Center where the handicapped seating is located behind the graduates on the floor.

Receiving Diplomas Students will be ushered out one row at a time to walk up to the stage. As the student comes to the stage they will hand their card to the reader and wait for their name to be called. Once their name is called, the student will walk onto the

• Be patient. This works with the actual graduation ceremony and all the activities surrounding it: Friends and family who want those extra pictures, drivers who want in your lane, students who take too long to get ready, and so forth. • Traffic could be busy and slow in the downtown areas. Give yourself plenty of time to get to, park and walk to the venue. Doors open one hour prior to the ceremony • Identify the best parking places and directions to them (especially those one-way streets). • Likewise, arriving too soon could create additional slowdowns as traffic leaving the venue might not have left suitable parking spots. So find the right balance. • Consider not holding a family-and-friends celebration party immediately before or after the graduation ceremony, as it may cause extra stress in trying to get to or leave the venues. • Get creative. Ask other families to consider joint celebrations. Hold your celebration a week ahead of time – or a week after. • Enjoy! This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for our graduating seniors. There currently are two groups of singers: the Nebraska Children’s Choir for more capable singers (requiring some vocal music experience) and the Pillar Choir for singers with less experience or skill. Northeast program celebrates 25 years of building homes This school year marks the 25th anniversary of the partnership between the Lincoln Housing Authority and Lincoln Northeast High School’s Student-Build House Program, in which students and industrial technology teacher Bob Freese dedicate about 400 hours to the construction of a house that a family eventually calls home. Freese was reminded of the program’s lasting impact on March 19 as he made the two-mile drive from Northeast to Lincoln Public Schools District Office, where he and his current students presented as part of the latest LPS Learning Lunch, “Twenty-five Years of Student-Built Houses.” “Just on the short drive I passed three houses we’ve built over the years. They’re part of the community; families are living in those houses; they have children going to Lincoln Public Schools” he said, later adding, “There are a lot of people who have been impacted by this program.” Students - typically about 15 a year - take the house-building program as a course for school credit. Freese and his students work with a general contractor who coordinates the more specialized aspects of the project, such as electrical work and plumbing. The Lincoln Housing Authority owns the property and works to find a resident who otherwise could not afford a new house. At the Learning Lunch, Freese projected photos of student-built houses during various stages of construction and called on individual students to join him at the podium and explain that phase of the project - for example, laying anchor bolts as part of the foundation or installing insulation. “This program gives the opportunity for young people to learn some skills in construction, where there are many good job opportunities available,” said Freese, who has taught at Northeast for 35 years.

They’re part of the community; families are living in those houses; they have children going to Lincoln Public Schools.” Home Builders Association of Lincoln President Denny Van Horn, a former industrial technology teacher at Northeast, spoke at the end of the March 19 program about the impact Freese and this program has had on the local construction industry. As an example, he talked about a former student who now owns his own plumbing business. “He said the only reason he went in to the construction business was because of Bob Freese,” Van Horn said. “In Lincoln we have a shortage of skilled, qualified laborers. We need the kind of people that Bob is teaching.” And now, after 25 years, Freese is teaching students who have benefited twice from the program.

New CLC sites coming to Northeast and Lincoln High, Randolph More community members, families and students from Lincoln Public Schools will soon benefit from the many opportunities offered by the city’s Community Learning Centers (CLCs), thanks to federal grant funding approved by the Nebraska Board of Education recently.

The $182,700 grant will fund new CLCs located at Randolph Elementary School, Lincoln Northeast High School and Lincoln High School, beginning with the 2019-20 school year. The award is part of $2.2 million in funding distributed statewide through the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.

The city’s 26 current CLCs are located in schools throughout the city. They offer safe, supervised before- and after-school programs, weekend and summer enrichment opportunities and other support services for children, families and neighborhoods.

Make a Difference Fair at Scott Middle School Scott Middle School held its annual Make A Difference Fair on April 11, when sixth-grade students presented the culmination of months of research and writing about many of today’s societal issues - and how people can lend a helping hand. Students from the 6A pod set up rows and rows of displays in the gym that displayed information about various causes and organizations. Family and community members were invited and encouraged to make donations to organizations of their choice. Examples of organizations included: • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention • Food Bank of Lincoln • Autism Speaks • People’s City Mission • United Nations Refugee Agency • Veterans’ Community Project • Nebraska No Kill Canine Shelter Sixth-graders at Scott have raised more $60,000 for nonprofits in the Lincoln community and around the world through this annual project. The 6A language arts teachers have extended this “Make a Difference” theme into the classroom and incorporated it into the curriculum. Students are required to complete a research paper, a persuasive paper and give an oral presentation on their chosen topics and organizations. One of the students, Oliva, said she learned a lot through the project. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what you look like, how old you are or who you are, you can still make a positive difference in the world.” Said one of her classmates, Cali: “It’s a way the kids and adults alike can get educated and help stop the problems in our world.”

Secret Summer Survival Guide for Parents By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Facilitator and Registered Dietitian As spring and summer slide toward us, here are some quick tips for better survival with your family. • Summer Free Feeding Programs. Each year, approximately 100,000 free meals are provided to school-aged children in the Lincoln community through sites across the city. Where is the closest one to you? Simply text “FOOD” to 877877 to always know where to go for the closest location. More information on summer food opportunities may also be found at https://www.fns.usda.gov/ summerfoodrocks or http://www.education.ne.gov/NS/SFSP/index.html and get updates via Twitter at #NESummerMeals and the Nebraska Department of Education Nutrition Services’ Facebook page. • Home alone meals. If your kids are old enough and will be making some meals for themselves at home this summer, ideas for stocking your pantry and simple, healthy, inexpensive meals are available through the “Home Alone” video series on LNKTV Health, which is both our city health channel on TV and on YouTube, which has been touted and archived by the national CDC. Subscribe to LNKTV Health to keep up to date on this and great local resources for your family’s health. • Safety is job one. As parents, we want our kids to be safe. Recognize the risks in your home and safe-proof spaces; for instance, anchoring your TV or cabinets that could tip if your kids are trying to be active on an indoor day. This isn’t just for little kids. Many a victory dance in front of a TV has led to tragedy. It’s worth investing a bit of time and effort for safekeeping — of kids and technology alike. • Bring on the books. A cozy read on a summer day, rather at home or out and about can stir the imagine and help kids develop a love of reading. It can also help cut out the “I’m bored” that accompanies summer lulls. Our Lincoln City Libraries have resources galore to engage your family, free of cost. Consider taking part in the summer reading program for added perks and events. • Build your barriers. Too much sun and itchy bug bites can cut summer fun short. Getting in the habit of putting on a layer of sunblock before leaving the house can stop slippery mid-stride hassles and spotty application. Staying ahead of the sunset mosquitoes is important. Be sure to check kids closely if they have been playing outdoors for ticks trying to gain free rides. Watch labels to ensure products are kid-friendly. Having kids shower/bathe before bed gives you a chance to check for sunburn, bugs and to cut down on bringing pollen in the house for kids with allergies. • Find your active family fun. Don’t we all miss a bit of that spring and summer fun as adults? The secret to having kids is getting to act like one, too, every now and then. Power up your silly and play some yard games or go exploring on a family walk. Your kids are looking forward to spending a sneaky bit of the summer with you. Blame it on the kids. Get out there and play

LPS Mariachi 2019 Spring Tour

New this school year to Lincoln Public Schools is Los Mariachis de las Ciudad Estrella. This ensemble of musicians is comprised of students in grades eight through 12 from all over Lincoln. During the school year, they’ve learned and performed the traditional music of mariachis. On March 29, the group traveled through Lincoln treating different schools to its unique sound. They performed at Kooser Elementary School, Lincoln Southeast High School, Huntington Elementary School and Scott Middle School. The LPS mariachi ensemble is made possible through the generous support of the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools.

Moños or the wide bow ties are traditional neckwear for mariachis. These moños were custom made for the LPS Los Mariachis de la Ciudad Estrella and feature the Nebraska State Capitol building. The group chose the colors red, black and goldenrod.
