Zeman students aim to help A new after-school group for fourth- and fifth-grade students at Zeman Elementary School has a simple mission but one that could have a far-reaching impact: helping the community. Principal Rik Devney started the Young Scholar Committee during the first semester of the school year. The group of roughly 30 students, who volunteered to join, meet every other week for an hour after school. Last week they were huddled around tables in the library in small groups of three and four, brainstorming ideas for community service projects. Ideas included addressing issues such as homelessnes, hunger and litter. “This is an action-oriented group of scholars who want to make change and they have a strong desire to make a difference,” Devney said. “With our renewed focus on equity, we felt it was important to give students the opportunity to have a voice in making change. It's time that we take action if we want to see change. These scholars are eager to get involved.” He said the community service projects revolve around the four “equity lenses” for Lincoln Public Schools: kindness, civility, equality and justice. The students are researching and learning about the needs of the Lincoln community and Zeman. “The first step in making change is to be informed of the needs around us so change can happen,” Devney said. “Students have gone through activities that have increased their level of awareness related to the needs within our community and school.” The students also will soon be taking the children’s version of the Clifton StrengthsExplorer assessment. “Then we’re going to use our strengths to help the community,” said one of the students, Emery. “Doing the big projects that we’re planning, helping the community,” said another student, Shelby, “it just feels good.”

The best free gifts ever for kids By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS District Wellness Much of what kids need more of today is simple. Even better, some of the very best gifts we can give our kids are absolutely free. The gift of your undivided attention. Boy, that seems simple, doesn’t it? Now try doing it with true intent and consistency. A great starting place is to put away all devices and screens and give each child 20 minutes of undivided attention. You could read a book together, play a board game or just tell each other silly stories. It’s also important to label it for your kids as our “20 minutes of special time” so they both look forward to it and realize it is intentional. Teaching our kids they are important enough to us that we put the rest of the world on pause - best gift ever. The gift of you saying no and meaning it. Kids need to feel as though they have safe boundaries set for them. Especially in today’s world, it’s important kids realize, “We’ve got this” as adults and that they can slowly gain more of those decision-making skills as they progress through life. This is especially true with technology. Kids will try to push limits and tell us they need more access than we know is really safe for them. They will not understand the safety hazards that come with unlimited access. Purposeful boundaries with time away from technology are becoming more critical for child/teen safety than ever. Ensure that all keepers of the technology are consistent and on board with setting family guidelines.

The gift of manners. In building their skills to have the future we dream for them, chances improve greatly if we teach our kids the manners they need to have. From early please and thank yous, to how to write a simple thank you note and gulp, address an envelope! They likely haven’t received much mail themselves, so understanding this process is foreign to them. Even being able to kindly order food, respond to others or hold simple conversations with strangers is surprisingly a skill missing to more teens today than ever. True basics can give them a surprising edge. The gift of kindness. If you were to describe your child, would “kind” be among the first adjectives you would choose? Kindness is free and should be a top gift we give to our kids. How do they gain that gift? They quite often do what they see. Think about who is in the back seat of the car when you drive, how they see you interact with a store worker or restaurant server on a tough day or even a person with bigger challenges in life due to poverty, age or capabilities. Then be who you want them to be and talk about your choices. The gift of free time. One of the best tools of building imagination and creativity can be giving kids free time to be bored. In this over-scheduled world, lack of free time is decreasing our kids time they have to create and dream. A couple of blankets can quickly become a couch fort. They may start making up their own games. Let them know this is a “gift of creative imagination and free time.” Then have them “show and tell” their creation.

March TeamMates of the Month

Ebony and Stacey: I have her in my corner After graduating from Lincoln North Star High School this spring, Ebony has four goals: attend Southeast Community College, move to a Florida beach town, own a pet cow and stay close with her TeamMate, Stacey. “She’s going to be my best friend. Well, she already is my best friend, but then I can hang out with her outside of school,” says Ebony. “What should we do?” asks Stacey, her mentor of six years. “You know…I was thinking,” says Ebony, “I want to go pet cows.” “She loves cows,” says Stacey with a laugh. Ebony can’t wait to graduate. “I’m excited to move on and move forward and see what my life has to bring.” “It is exciting,” Stacey says. “So many years and memories.” Some of their favorites include finding the perfect slime recipe, decorat-

ing gingerbread houses, going for walks and many crafts. Ebony was a sixth-grader at Lefler Middle School when they were matched. They first played cards and mancala, crafted and got to know each other. “I knew I could be open and tell her whatever was going on,” she says. “I could tell her, ‘Today’s not a good day’ and she would say, ‘Let’s sit down and talk about it.’ I didn’t feel like I had to pretend it was okay. I felt like I had her in my corner.” Stacey’s encouragement helped Ebony build confidence in herself to overcome challenges. When Ebony was attending school virtually because of the pandemic, she Zoomed with Stacey, and in tears, talked about her grades slipping and the stresses of remote learning. Together, they were able to identify school staff members Ebony could contact, and Ebony wasted no time putting their plan into action. “As we’re meeting she’s emailing two

teachers,” Stacey says. “She started figuring out who around her she could tap into for support and she recognized she didn’t have to do it by herself. She figured it all out right then and there, and she felt so much better by the end of our meeting.”

says. “Today I was supposed to ask a teacher to retake a test and I was like ‘Ugh, I don’t want to get up and ask,’ but I heard that little voice in the back of my head that sounded like Stacey, saying ‘Come on, get up, go ask.’”

“Ebony, that was all you,” Stacey says. “I was just there to support you.”

“Last year was really tough and Stacey kept telling me you got this,” Ebony says. “When I finally passed math, my biggest struggle, I was like, ‘You know what, I do got this. I’m going to do amazing, and I did do amazing. And I still am!”

Ebony believes their friendship has helped her learn to advocate for herself even when it takes effort. “I’m a pretty quiet person,” she

Girls on the Run of Nebraska offers after-school programs to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident with a curriculum that creatively incorporates running. Teams of third- through fifth-grade girls meet twice weekly after school for two months to train for a 5K run/walk at the end of the season. Our awardwinning nationally standardized curriculum combines exercise, education, mentoring and “Girl Power” in a fun and engaging environment to help girls put their best foot forward. Delivered by trained volunteer coaches, the program offers lessons on goal-setting, community, healthy habits, problem-solving and the power of positivity.

Emotional event honors Thank You Teacher winners F

ive educators were selected from more than 500 written nominations to be honored as part of the annual Lincoln Public Schools Thank You Teacher celebration, which asks both current and former students throughout the community to write about how a favorite teacher impacted their lives. It’s held in conjunction with Nebraska Teacher Appreciation Day, which was March 1. On March 2, the winning educators and their nominating students were formally recognized during a breakfast reception at the Governor’s Mansion. On hand for this special event were family, friends, colleagues, LPS administrators, members of the Lincoln Board of Education and representatives from the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools.

Melissa Christensen

First-grade teacher, Kooser Elementary School Nominated by Abby Roth, now a Schoo seventh-grade student

PREK-SECOND GRADE

Angie Stahl

Special education teacher, Holmes Elementary School Nominated by Rose Lorenz, fifth-grade student

THIRD-FIFTH GRADE

“The Thank You Teacher event has always been one of my favorites,” Duncan told the crowd. “I always leave here with a tear in my eye but a smile on my face…I want to thank the teachers here and those back at their schools for their dedication over the last few years.”

Said Lorenz: “ Mrs. Stahl is an amazing teacher and an amazing person. She is kind, compassionate, patient and loving. She has always been there for me and for my family. I know that no matter what goes on during the day, I can always count on Mrs. Stahl to help me and guide me in the right direction. Mrs. Stahl not only teaches me in her classroom, but she also teaches me and helps me understand what is right and good.”

Counselor, Dawes Middle School Nominated by Zoe Ingram, eighth-grade student at Dawes

Jill St. James from co-sponsor Alpha Media, KFOR and KFRX emceed the event. LPS Superintendent Steve Joel and Lincoln Board of Education President Connie Duncan addressed those in attendance, both emphasizing the vital role that teachers play in the lives of students. “Congratulations to our honorees this morning. You represent the best of the best in Lincoln and Nebraska,” Joel said. “You are the embodiment of honor, integrity and passion that our educators bring to the classroom each and every day. Indeed, teachers provide so much to our students, and it is even more evident during a pandemic. You provide inspiration, motivation, and ultimately, dependability.”

Said Roth: “Mrs. Christensen really opened my eyes about how kids can really make a difference in our community. Every time I see her outside of school she will aways stop and take time to talk to me. She has really made a difference in my life and I will always remember her and she is someone that should get appreciated greatly. I hope that she never stops teaching and never stops showing kids how much of a difference they can make in our community and in our schools. Thank you, Mrs. Christensen, for changing my life.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Said Ingram: “She is so special to me and I couldn’t have made it through some of the things I did without her. I have no idea where I will be in the future but I will always thank her for getting me through the worst times of my life. There are so many times I remember that I would be having a horrible day or I had a hard morning or night before and she would for just a couple minutes or seconds make me forget that I’m having a hard time. There were times I would just go sit in her room and completely break down or I would rant but there were other times I would just talk and she would listen and other times we would just laugh.”

Brent Noser

Music teacher, Lincoln High School Nominated by Lincoln High School student Zeph Siebler

HIGH SCHOOL

Said Siebler: Mr. Noser not only gives kids who are having troubles a place to belong, he looks at each of us, asks us what we want to do, what we need to do to do that, and does his best to get us that. In addition, he is good at identifying what we need even if we don’t see it: a place to eat lunch, music to express what we can’t express in words, and a tribe to belong to. When I am a teacher, I want to be the kind of teacher Mr. Noser is. By offering the world of music and a community of peers to each student, especially those at the margins, Mr. Noser genuinely enhances and saves lives. We are better humans because of his work.”

Sue Hedrick

Retired LPS teacher Nominated by Hope DaCosta-Schiltz, second-grade teacher at Rousseau Elementary School

Students read their nominating letters aloud, followed by remarks from the winning educators. As usual with this event, there were tears and sniffles from most of the honorees and many in the audience. RETIRED

Said DaCosta-Schiltz: “A quote that really captures the two years I spent with Mrs. Hedrick (She was my first-grade teacher and fifth-grade teacher) comes from Carl Buechner: ‘They may forget what you said, but they will not forget how you made them feel.’ Every day was filled with fun in Mrs. Hedrick’s class. While I am certain she used highly effective, research-based strategies and the activities had 100% of students engaged, most importantly she made me feel safe, loved and so incredibly special.”
