Thank You Teacher winners announced Five educators were selected among more than 500 nominees in the annual Lincoln Public Schools Thank You Teacher contest, which asks current and former students throughout the community to write about how a favorite teacher impacted their lives. The winning educators and students were honored this year at a ceremony with limited attendees held March 2 at LPS District Office. The event also was available online.

The event was held in conjunction with Nebraska Teacher Recognition Day, which also was March 2.

“At first, I had a lot of trouble at school and I don't know why I just couldn't do what I was supposed to, but Mrs. Shada always made me feel like it was ok to make a mistake and it didn't make me bad. I wanted to be a good student and she helped me learn what to do when I am mad or frustrated so I can do the right thing and make better choices. She makes me feel like she is proud of me and that makes me feel good because sometimes, before this year, I didn't feel like I could do a good job in school. But now I love going to school and learning new things. I think Mrs. Shada deserves an award because she is the best teacher I had in my life!”

This year’s winners in the five categories were: Preschool-Grade 2: Ashley Livers, Beattie Elementary School, nominated by Jessica Mitchell-McCollough and her daughter, Violet. In her nomination letter, Mitchell-McCollough and her daughter said Livers has gone above and beyond to help her daughter, who has been a remote learner this school year. “Mrs. Livers has truly been an example of resiliency and community building during a challenging year, always open and honest and willing to be flexible, always supportive and cheerful. What could have been a very hard year has instead turned into a year of opportunities for new kinds of growth and celebrations of new learning. Mrs. Livers deserves to be recognized for her

She credits her former teacher for her success in high school and now Nebraska Wesleyan University: “I struggled with science courses throughout school and I absolutely hated them because I always felt weak and incapable due to my Cerebral Palsy. March TeamMates of the Month

Andru and Chris: Strong character, good company Andru is a Lincoln Southeast High School junior who enjoys art and biology, works at a local restaurant, and is learning to play piano. He has been meeting with his TeamMate, Chris, so long he can’t recall their first visit back in 2012. Then a shy third grader, their meetings often involved Chris asking questions and Andru responding. “He was very quiet at first. I would always try to ask questions but not too many questions where it just gets tedious,” recalls Chris. Knowing their shared interest in art, Chris began bringing comic books and sketchbooks, and the pair would recreate the cover in their own styles. They played games, too, like Racko and cards, and a ping pong table spurred some fierce competition once they transitioned to Pound Middle School. “Chris brought Racko the other week and that brought back some great memories of elementary school and how we first met,” says Andru. Andru still enjoys their competitiveness, as well as the conversations they have during games. “I can tell you really anything,” Andru says to Chris. “Now that he’s older and more mature, he asks me questions a lot more, too, about either work or home stuff,” says Chris. “To me, that’s a sign of real maturity, that it’s not just answering questions, it’s asking questions, too.” He admires the young man and leader Andru is becoming. “I see integrity and self- confidence about who he is,” says Chris. “He has a strong character…If he can’t make a meeting he makes sure the office knows and they call me in advance so I don’t have to leave work. He’s very trustworthy and responsible that way, and I think that’s really important.” “I’m just grateful he’s taking time out of his day and busy work schedule to come see me once a week,” says Andru. Chris doesn’t see mentoring as an obligation, but rather something he looks forward to. “It’s fun. He’s good com-

Andru and Chris are looking forward to graduation next year and plan to stay in touch thereafter. While Andru isn’t sure which career path he’ll pursue just yet, Chris has every confidence in him. “Andru has a ton of potential, whatever he does.”

LPS names nine new principals Multiple new principals at Lincoln Public Schools were announced recently. They all will begin their new duties on July 1. Congratulations to the following new principals: Shayna Cook will be the next Kloefkorn Elementary Principal. Cook has grown into a leadership role through her time at Schoo Middle School. She began teaching at Schoo in 2009 before being named an instructional coordinator in 2015. After two years, she was promoted to associate principal. Cook earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Amy Clark, current Adams Elementary School principal, is returning to Sheridan Elementary School. She began teaching first grade at Sheridan in 2005, before moving to fifth grade in 2009. In 2011, Clark served as Sheridan’s coordinator until she took on the associate principal role at Adams Elementary in 2015. In 2017, Clark became the principal at Adams. Kellie Joy, current Lakeview Elementary School principal, will be Kooser Elementary School’s next principal. Joy was promoted to principal at Lakeview in 2018, after serving as instructional coordinator there since 2015. She also taught at Clinton Elementary School and served as instructional coach and continuous school improvement co-chair. Joy also has experience as an instructor and master teacher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Rob Rickert will be the next Hartley Elementary principal. Rickert has been at Hartley since 2018, serving as instructional coach for one year before becoming the assistant principal in 2019. Prior to Hartley, he taught fourth grade at Kooser Elementary School for seven years and science at Schoo Middle School for 2 years. Rickert earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Doane College. Jason Shanahan, current Irving Middle School principal, will move to Mickle Middle School as the principal next year. Shanahan taught in Kansas, Kearney and Bellevue before joining Lincoln Public Schools as a teacher at Schoo Middle School in 2009. He was Schoo’s instructional coordinator from 2012 to 2014, before moving to Irving as the associate principal. Shanahan was named Irving’s principal in 2016.

Susan Hershberger will be the next Lakeview Elementary principal. Hershberger has been at Lakeview since 2018 as coordinator after serving as a special education coordinator at Huntington Elementary School for two years. Prior to that, she taught at Hill Elementary School for four years. Hershberger has a Bachelor’s of Science in Business/ Accounting from the College of Saint Mary, a Master’s Degree of Education in Special Education from the University of Nebraska, and a Master’s Degree of Education in Educational Administration from Concordia University. Jeff Rust will be the new principal at Adams Elementary School starting next year. His new duties will begin on July 1. Rust has served as Hartley’s principal since 2012. Prior to Hartley, he was Saratoga’s coordinator, then assistant principal from 20062012. He taught at Belmont elementary from 2001-2005. Rust received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. Rust will replace Adams principal Amy Clark. Clark was recently announced as the new principal at Sheridan Elementary School after DeAnn Currin announced her retirement. Rachael Kluck-Spann will be Irving Middle School’s next principal. Kluck-Spann started at Irving in 2014 as instructional coordinator before moving into the associate principal position in 2016. She has served as a counselor at Schoo Middle School from 20092014 and Culler Middle School from 20072009. Kluck-Spann has a bachelor’s degree from Montana State University, a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Doane College. Ryan Escamilla will be Schoo Middle School’s next principal. Escamilla has been the associate principal at Lincoln High School since 2017. He has plenty of middle school experience serving students at Park Middle School as a coordinator from 201517 and as a teacher at both Lefler and Pound middle schools from 2005-15. Escamilla has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, a master’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan, and a master’s degree from Concordia University.

Principal announced for new high school in northwest Lincoln Cedric Cooper, current Schoo Middle School principal, will serve as the first principal of the new high school located in northwest Lincoln. Opening in the fall of 2022, this high school will be the seventh LPS high school. In addition to traditional classes, it will also house the new Medical Science Focus Program in partnership with the Bryan College of Health Sciences. “We are excited for Mr. Cooper and this opportunity to open our new high school in northwest Lincoln. In his three years at Schoo Middle School, he has distinguished himself as an effective instructional leader, relationship builder and champion of equity for all students,” Joel said. “Mr. Cooper’s previous background as a high school principal in Wyoming and his teaching career with Omaha Public Schools positions him well to recruit a high-quality staff, engage a growing community and create an

I felt I needed to take advantage of this opportunity, and I know I will continue to work with many of the same Schoo students and families

Cooper obtained his Bachelor of Science in Health Education from Montana State University and his Master in Educational Leadership from Doane University. He is currently working on his Educational Specialist degree. Cooper will finish the school year at Schoo and transition to his new position July 1.

Learning resilience from our students Students are a resilient lot! I have spent many mornings in our schools and always enjoy the opportunity to converse with our young people. They are honest, forthright and not afraid to ask the difficult questions. I have said many times that the future of our country is bright as these students make their own way forward. Of course, they will be different than the previous generations, but then so were we. We managed to figure it out and so will they. I saw an example of this recently at one of our high schools. After offering a weak apology to a senior young lady (with big post-high school plans I might add) for how rough her 11th- and 12th-grade years have been, she quickly corrected me. She said that she has learned so much about herself in terms of dealing with such a major crisis that she knows she is ready for the next chapter in her life. She was thankful for her teachers, principal, parents and the fact that she, unlike several millions of students around the country, was able to attend school. While there were things she definitely missed about “normalcy,” she felt the life lessons she learned were very impactful. Oh, and she casually mentioned prom as we concluded our talk. I have not been able to get that conversation out of my head as it reinforced to me the power of education, teachers and how each day we strive to help students be the very best they can be. The news concerning the virus and vaccinations is wonderful for all of LPS and our community. While we still have a long way to go to really be safe, I believe we are heading to the other side of this incredible challenge. With data demonstrating again that our schools are safe, we invited all high school students to come back in-person after spring break – ending the 3/2 schedule. This invitation comes with the caveat that we won’t hesitate to go back to the 3/2 schedule if advised to do so by health officials. We have done a great job thus far in keeping our schools safe and cannot let our guards down. As we progress through the final quarter of the academic year, I want to thank all members of the LPS staff for their incredible effort to make it work under very difficult circumstances. I would also call out our parents and incredibly supportive community for their confidence. While this has been a year like no other, I am beyond confident that we will emerge stronger than ever in our resolve to help every single student succeed.

Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Eco efforts stay strong in 2020 Even though there were many challenges in 2020, LPS is proud to share that we kept up our recycling and composting efforts across the district. LPS has been recycling materials like paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles in all of our buildings since 2002. But did you know that we recycle and reuse so much more than that? We also recycle other materials like electronics, batteries, light bulbs, wood pallets, metal, and milk cartons. LPS started collecting organic materials to be composted in 2014, and the program is now district-wide in 59 cafeterias and offices. This program keeps organics out of the landfill and creates a valuable soil amendment that returns nutrients to our soils. Waste diversion is one of many ways that LPS strives to reduce our impact on the environment and use our Earth’s resources responsibly. This is a great reminder as Earth Day is coming up on Thursday, April 22nd. We will have plenty of resources and opportunities available for our students and their families to celebrate, just visit home.lps.org/sustainability for more information.

Moore Middle School team wins state science bowl Multiple teams from Lincoln Public Schools competed in state-level science bowls recently, with a team from Moore Middle School placing first. The annual science bowl competition is organized and typically hosted by Wayne State College. This year’s competitions were held virtually via Zoom on Feb. 6 for middle schools and Feb. 13 for high schools.

Plant some growing ideas with your kids By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS Wellness Facilitator Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow? You may be familiar with that nursery rhyme, but how about planting or gardening? Spring is the season of dreams for those who like to dig in the dirt and plant flowers or foods. This might be a great year to introduce the concept to your children and have a little fun yourself. Each family is unique in resources and opportunities. However, we are extremely fortunate to have several school and community gardens in Lincoln. Some schools even have gardening towers with hydroponic growth in vertical gardens. If your child is in summer programs, they might be taking part in some growing adventures, but how can you bring that home? Container gardening in little pots or containers can be a great way to get started introducing growing to kids. Two of my favorite items to grow with kids are lettuce and herbs, such as rosemary, parsley, basil or cilantro. Herbs are great in an area that receives full sun and are great on a patio, where their fragrance can add to your experience sitting outside on a breezy day. You can start both lettuce and herbs with seeds or starter plants, depending on your level of patience. Both crops do well in containers and are fast growers that

keep producing if they are pinched off and used across the season. Kids having a connection to where food comes from and how it grows is a meaningful way to get them to experiment with eating new, nutrient-rich foods. It can also help them have “a job” to check the planters for moisture, as containers can dry out quickly and do well with regular, sometimes daily watering in hotter months.

Be a “Growing” Family Planting and tending a garden provides your family with fresh and tasty food, sunshine, and great exercise.

In addition to learning about foods, they are tucking in science, math and reading lessons without even being aware of it, with reading packets, measuring distance when planting, exploring sun impact - so many lessons tucked in those little sprigs. Shhh… that’s our little secret. Have fun planting and exploring with your kids. Looking for a new place to explore? Did you know that Lincoln

has a food forest? The Southern Heights Food Forest is a twoacre community space, meant for children to explore and learn about growing food. It is located at 5750 S. 40th Street. Check out its social media pages for details and programming/educational events for kids and families. Breathe easier with April flowers, May showers More this year than ever, our kids are ready to get out of the house and play outdoors. However, if your children are heavily impacted by spring seasonal allergies or asthma, they may be less likely to stay active. Thanks for doing all you can as parents to get ahead of these issues in a preventative way, so when at school and home they can get out and play. Visit with your healthcare provider about a treatment plan to keep your student from getting sidelined by seasonal impacts. Many allergy medications work better if they are built up in the system with daily use. Depending on the severity of asthma for your child, they may have both a controller and a rescue medication. Quite often these can get flip flopped with each other, so label them clearly. Ask your pharmacist if you aren’t 100 percent sure which is which. Be sure to have your child follow their personal plan closely, paying close attention to use medications as prescribed for use 15-20 minutes before being active, so that each active moment is one of fun instead of fear. Also, ensure that your school’s health office has a copy of this plan to support your child. One side note for parents of kids with asthma, the next time you are talking with your healthcare provider, consider discussing the use of a spacer with your child’s inhaler. Spacers are a device about the size of a toilet paper tube that connects to your child’s inhaler and may help make delivery of medication much more effective.

Two LPS employees win school social work award The School Social Work Association of Nebraska has honored two Lincoln Public Schools employees with its Friend of School Social Work award. Director of Student Services Russ Uhing and Supervisor of Counseling and School Social Work Brenda Leggiadro learned of the award in a surprise announcement recently at LPS District Office. The award honors a professional or volunteer in Nebraska who has made a significant impact supporting the field of school social work, specifically in the areas of family children’s services, education, community support/outreach and advocacy. Uhing and Leggiadro both praised the Lincoln Public Schools school social workers and credited them for the award. “As mental health experts, school social workers are tireless advocates for students and their families as they connect school, family, and community to ensure student success. Lefler Honors Cadre students participate in Discover Engineering Days with UNL Students in Lefler Middle School’s Honors Cadre recently participated in Discover Engineering Days, an event held multiple times throughout the year that introduces middle school students to the various fields of engineering and the programs offered at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This year’s event was held virtually so there was not the typical trip to the UNL campus. But UNL College of Engineering students still led sessions about electrical nanotechnology, acoustics and the construction of rockets. “My hope is for students to see engineering as a possible course of study,” said Barb Miller, the cadre’s facilitator. Miller and Lefler Principal Jess Fries started the Honors Cadre seven years ago when they invited fifth-grade students from their feeder schools to be part of an academic support community. It’s now a three-year middle school program that fosters an academically focused peer group for marginalized students who were not identified as gifted in elementary schools. Incoming Lefler students are identified by test scores, as well as recommendations from teachers and principals. Cadre members are then enrolled in differentiated courses and take part in a variety of experiences meant to enrich their academic work. They draw from local universities and high schools to provide mentors, tutors and field trips. “My goal is to give cadre students many diverse experiences so they can see what opportunities are available to them,” Miller said. Eighth-grader Kyquel Snyder is one of the cadre members this year. “I really like it,” she said. “We do a lot of things that I wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.” Miller plans on starting similar cadres at three more middle schools in fall of 2021.

Mayor visits Climate Champions Club at Saratoga CLC Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird is used to answering the tough questions, so she was fully prepared recently when she visited the Community Learning Center at Saratoga Elementary School. She was there to speak with students in the Climate Champions Club about her proposed climate action plan for Lincoln. But, just like in one of her press conferences, there were a few curveballs. “Hold old are you?” “What’s your favorite color?” “Is it fun being the mayor?” Mostly, though, the students stuck to questions related to what they’ve been learning in their new after-school club, topics such as climate change, greenhouse gases and measuring your carbon footprint. Questions included: How do you shrink your carbon footprint? Are you shrinking your carbon footprint? Do you like to garden? How will you help our planet? How will you get more wind turbines and bigger solar farms? How do you think climate change is affecting animals? They also asked the mayor about the climate action plan. “The climate action plan is sort of like a roadmap,” she told the students. “If you know you want to get somewhere you need to know the path to get there. The climate action plan is a pathway to a brighter, stronger, more sustainable future for all of us.”

LPS Sustainability Coordinator Britney Albin said future topics for the club will include water, waste and transportation. The mayor’s visit offered a valuable learning experience. “This was not only an amazing experience for students to learn about climate issues and what is being done to help in their community,” Albin said, “but it was also a window into civic action and an opportunity for students to have their voices heard.”
