Moore teacher named state Art Educator of the Year Bockerman called the honor “monumental.” “This recognition validates the work we are doing to facilitate student growth in self-exploration, collaboration, connectionmaking and cultural awareness,” she said. “Through the exploration of empathetic communication, problem-seeking and solving, and pattern-recognizing, visual art students are learning skills to prepare them for a global future.” LPS Art Curriculum Specialist Lorinda Rice praised Bockerman for her work that led to this award. “Jennifer projects authentic learning experiences on her students that allow for connection to critical life experiences and the meaning-making that happens when they research, create and reflect within the creative process,” Rice said.

A teacher with Lincoln Public Schools has been named the Nebraska Art Educator of the Year. The National Art Education Association honored Moore Middle School art teacher Jennifer Bockerman at the group’s national convention March 23 in Seattle.

Bockerman previously taught at Norwood Park Elementary School. In 2017, she was named to the Nebraska Department of Education’s STEM Fellows Academy. She was a team member on the Nebraska Fine Arts Standards team in 2015 and has collaborated with local museums for student access and programming. She also is an active visual artist herself, with numerous local, regional and national group and solo exhibitions.

Roper teachers honored with first WIT Award Lincoln Public Schools staff do such excellent work, they have inspired the creation of a new award - WIT/Whatever It Takes - to recognize the moments when people go above and beyond to do “whatever it takes.” Jane Stavem, associate superintendent for instruction, stopped by Roper Elementary School recently to present the first WIT Award, honoring the fourth-grade teachers for going above and beyond. Tysie Cournoyer, Tori Hupf, Charlene Simpson and Tara Topham went above and beyond and did “Whatever It Takes” to help the Lincoln Police Department locate a student who went missing one evening long after school was out. As soon as they heard a student was reported missing by family, the teachers returned to school to provide valuable information to police and began combing the neighborhood until the student was found and returned safely home.

Honoring LPS paraprofessionals The Individual Success Program (ISP) offered by Lincoln Public Schools provides an opportunity to succeed for special education students who need more individualized behavioral and academic instruction than their home schools can provide. Elementary students in the program attend Humann Elementary School, with older students attending the program at Lux Middle School and East High School. The program focuses on individualized instruction, with ISP team members working one-on-one with students as much as possible. For students, it’s all about their individual success. But for the ISP team at Humann, it’s all about their success as a group - a group so tight-knit that sometimes words aren’t even necessary. “I think that we have an amazing team dynamic,” said paraeducator Jill Hurtz. “We have such a good connection that a lot of times all we have to do is look at each other and we know what needs to be done.” Hurtz is one of thousands of paraeducators nationwide honored on Wednesday, April 4, as part of Paraprofessional Appreciation Day. A paraeducator, typically referred to as a para, is a teaching-related position generally responsible for specialized or concentrated assistance with students. Hurtz and two other paras, Helen Ristow and Toni Daro, are part of the ISP team at Humann. They’re joined by intervention specialist Samantha Bjorkman, team leader Katie Troupe and part-time special education teacher Rachel McNaught.

It’s the first year for the ISP program and the Humann team is already seeing results with their students. For example, parents have said their children are now using coping strategies learned at school at home. One student, a secondgrader, sometimes requests a “calming break” at home or at social outings with his family. Troupe said the program is serving an important purpose. “The ultimate goal for students is to come to our programming and receive everything instructionally that they need to be successful, to learn how to cope and self-regulate and deal with negative emotions, and to learn how to be a citizen of their school, ultimately with the hope that they’ll return to their home school with these new tools and be successful there,” she said. Ristow knew when she interviewed for the job that ISP was something special. “When I left the job interview, I wanted the job but I was even more happy that this program was going to happen,” she said. “I hoped I got the job but I was also just excited that there was going to be growth for these children.” Spoken like a true team player.

Park students treated to ‘Lunch with a Cop’

It’s never easy being the new kid at lunch, but members of the Lincoln Police Department quickly made friends at Park Middle School on April 3. Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister and several of his officers ate lunch and chatted with students as part of a new initiative called “Lunch with a Cop.” Officers recently made a similar stop at Scott Middle School and are in the process of lining up their next visit. The police department sees it as a commonsense approach to build and strengthen relationships within Lincoln Public Schools. “I truly believe that our presence at the schools improves the lines of communication and makes it part of the everyday

Everyone is working together to make a difference.” LPS Director of Security Joe Wright is a former captain with the police department and recalls the positive impact it had on other students when he visited his son’s school to eat lunch. “Anytime we can get police officers in the schools it’s a good thing,” Wright said. “It normalizes them for our students, as opposed to them only seeing officers during a time of crisis.”

East High takes second at State Debate Lincoln East High School placed second in the State Debate and Congress Championships, held March 23-24 at Lincoln Southwest High School. Scott Middle School hosts Make a Difference Fair Scott Middle School held its annual Make A Difference Fair on April 19, when sixth-grade students presented the culmination of months of research and writing about many of today’s societal issues - and how people can lend a helping hand. Students from the 6A pod set up nearly 80 displays in the gym that displayed information about various causes and organizations. Family and community members were invited to the event and encouraged to make donations to those organizations.

The 6A language arts teachers have extended this “Make a Difference” theme into the classroom and incorporated it into the curriculum. Students are required to complete a research paper, a persuasive paper and give an oral presentation on their chosen topics and organizations. Sixth-grader Marco Spinar hoped the event left a lasting impression on those who attended. “I hope that people can learn that there are lots of ways they can help people in our society, and that sixth-graders can also make a difference.”

May 2018 TeamMates of the Month

It’s Life Changing

She seems comfortable relating to teenagers. In fact, Judy and Kara seem incredibly comfortable together. They have a connection. The sort of connection garnered by a decade of being friends. They are adamant, however, that they have had that connection since the very beginning. “From the first time we met there was never awkward silence,” Judy says. “Even as a little girl, she was energetic and fun. I brought a bag of stuff…” “And I did the stuff,” Kara finishes the sentence to Judy’s delight. They are on the same wavelength—harmonized. It is easy to see. “It seemed natural,” they agree. “I don’t think it was anything either of us did,” Judy says. “When you talk about a match, we were a match. That’s it. We clicked.” Though their connection seems deeper than most matches. Kara is a self-aware young woman who speaks from the heart. She remembers feeling excited when she first met her mentor and that instant, unexplained connection. “In my life I haven’t really trusted a lot of people, but I just trusted her right away,” Kara explains. “It’s not a thing that I’ve had happen a lot.” Kara and Judy did the things any match might do - played games, did crafts. Judy recalls playing Mancala in the early days, “With the little glass beads.” She says, “We didn’t know how to play, but Kara would tell me ‘this is how you do it.’ She would make the rules up and she cheated all the time.” Judy laughs, “I let her cheat for a while, then I called her out and she said, ‘OK, I won’t cheat anymore.’” “And then I cheated,” Kara says with a smile. “We don’t really play games anymore, though.” She continues, “now we talk.” “And she shows me how to do things on my phone,” Judy adds. They have an enduring friendship. But things haven’t always been happy-go-lucky. When Kara was 10 her mother passed away and Judy struggled to figure out how to help her. “It was hard for me to know what to do and what my role would be. You don’t want to overstep, so I would just let her talk about it if she wanted to talk about it.”

Judy Christensen and her mentee, Kara, have been matched for 10 years. Having started together in third grade, the pair is now preparing Kara, a senior at Lincoln Southwest High School, for the next step as her final days of high school move quickly toward graduation. Thinking back on the beginning, Judy remembers first hearing about TeamMates. “I learned about [the program] through my church,” she says, “then, at the job I had at the time, a friendof-a-friend came in and talked about the program. I ended up signing up at that time.” Still getting used to both of her sons going to college, Judy was looking to stay connected with young people. “My boys and all their friends were grown. They were out of high school, in college,” she says. “We always had boys in the house—always. I just missed that and thought I’d like to keep hanging out with kids.”

“I feel like I closed up a little bit,” Kara says. “There were times when I couldn’t stop thinking about it, I was only 10 at the time - ‘What if she were still here?’ ‘Was it really an accident?’ I’d talk to Judy about that stuff and she’d listen. Then, we’d play a game to forget about it.” She is thoughtful on this subject. “I feel like I became more of a closed-up person,” she says. “If it wasn’t for Judy I think that’s who I’d still be.” Judy believes Kara would still be her “fun, energetic” self without her, but they are both grateful for the friendship they have developed through TeamMates. “We have a good friendship. I know I’m still an adult and she’s younger but we have a relationship built on friendship and respect.” “It’s life-changing,” Kara continues, “absolutely life-changing. For a kid who, in second grade, doesn’t really know how to trust people and then somebody comes along and it is just there, it’s perfect. Then the kid, a few years later, loses someone and that person is there for them… It’s just amazing to have that net that catches you when you fall.” “Wow,” responds Judy. “I don’t think I can say it any better than that.” Kara graduates this month. She and Judy plan to maintain their friendship as she transitions into the next phase of her life.

NEBRASKA ACADEMY OF VOCAL ARTS The Nebraska Academy of Vocal Arts (NAOVA), a place to explore, discover, and refine the singing voice, is now enrolling for the 2018-19 school year for students in grades 2 to 8. The academy has a spot for any boy or girl, regardless of level of singing ability. There currently are two groups of singers: the Nebraska Children’s Choir for more capable singers (requiring some vocal music experience) and the Pillar Choir for singers with less experience or skill. Both choirs learn from a dedicated and experienced director and perform in settings and with other choirs at a level appropriate for their level of skill. Five new principals named for next year Middle Schools “We welcome three new principals who will serve at Schoo, Park and Scott middle schools,” said Jane Stavem, associate superintendent for Instruction at Lincoln Public Schools. “These leaders know the importance of strong middle schools as part of the transitional years between elementary and high school and are eager to assume their new roles.”

Lincoln Public Schools recently announced new principals at three middle schools and two high schools.

Marco Pedroza Principal, Scott Middle School Pedroza will serve as the new principal at Scott Middle School. He is currently associate principal at Lincoln Southwest High School, and has previously served as instructional coach at Schoo and teacher at Southwest. Pedroza earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his Master’s degree from Doane University.

Charlotte Everts Principal, Park Middle School Everts will serve as the new principal at Park Middle School. 24th Annual Earth Wellness Festival Lincoln Public Schools and a host of community education partners held the 24th annual Earth Wellness Festival at Southeast Community College on March 20-21. The event drew roughly 3,000 Lancaster County fifth-graders to the college’s Lincoln campus for a series of creative and hands-on lessons in the areas of water, land, air and living resources. Examples of sessions included: Reptiles and Amphibians of Nebraska; Watershed Mayhem; Turtle Talk; Worm Wrangling; Endangered!; and Wow Wind! Students also saw firsthand a barred owl, vulture, bald eagle and Johnny the serval from Lincoln Children’s Zoo. A serval is a medium-sized African wild cat native to sub-Saharan Africa. Festival organizers worked closely with LPS and other districts to ensure the activities and materials correspond with their fifth-grade curriculum. The 300 volunteers and presenters included educators, environmentalists and government representatives.

“This is a great sight - to see a room full of young people interested in becoming educators is a great thing,” Pedroza said.

The day’s activities included small and large group discussion about a variety of topics, including multicultural and teaching issues; educational videos; and a panel discussion that featured a group of culturally diverse LPS educators: Pedroza, Lincoln North Star High School Principal Vann Price, LPS Director of Curriculum and Instruction Takako Olson, and Park Middle School music teacher Jai Burks.

He was referring to the 56 Lincoln Public Schools students who attended the district’s annual Future Multicultural Teachers Workshop, held April 6 at LPS District Office. One of the day-long workshop’s primary goals is to further encourage culturally diverse students who have expressed interest in being teachers. Along those lines, the workshop also aims to increase the number of culturally diverse teachers in the district. “The idea is to emphasize ‘home grown’ when it comes to recruiting teachers. Hopefully, through events like this, we can help prepare current students to be some of our

Multiple students said afterwards they felt inspired and energized by the event. Lincoln High School senior Jack Buchanan said it solidified his interest in being a teacher. “It’s a great way for me and other kids like me who want to pursue educational careers to get that experience,” Buchanan said. “I think it would really make a difference for kids to see someone like me as their teacher.”

Irving students give back to Beattie Elementary “It’s our old school so it’s nice to come back and help,” Barnett said. “Plus it’s really fun,” Styskal added, “and I just like helping the kids.” They first volunteered at Beattie in the fall as part of Irving Community Outreach, an annual event organized by the Irving Parent Teacher Student Organization that involves students volunteering their time and effort in the community. The students ask for donations from family and other community members in conjunction with their activities. Emily Faubel leads the MakerSpace club at Beattie. Faubel, a paraeducator at Roper Elementary School, was looking for volunteers to help with the club and reached out to Irving. Barnett and Styskal were among the students who volunteered for what initially was a three-week commitment during the community outreach fundraiser. But the boys had so much fun, they asked if they could keep coming. “I had other volunteers lined up for the rest of the year so I figured if they came, great, if they changed their minds I was covered,” Faubel said. “Fast forward to the end of the year and the boys have attended every day except one.” On a recent Wednesday, Barnett and Styskal arrived at Beattie at 3:15 to help with the club. They jumped right in, asking students if they needed any help with the day’s activity. They patiently answered questions and offered advice. “They’re very creative so they extend my plans past what I envisioned,” Faubel said. “They ask the kids great questions, and assist but don’t do the work for them.” You sometimes hear about people wanting to give back to their old schools. They’re not usually in sixth grade, though. Irving Middle School sixth-graders Eddie Barnett and Reid Styskal have chosen to volunteer at Beattie Elementary School, helping out once a week with the MakerSpace Club that meets after school.

“I love building stuff anyway,” Barnett said, “and the kids really like having us around.” Correction, Fauble said, the kids love having them around. “It is a magical moment to observe.”

It’s a time to plan how we - as citizens of a community, a state and a nation - will better meet the needs of all young children and their families. This year, LPS will serve more than 2,000 young children (ages birth to five) and their families through comprehensive and family-centered services.

The Top 11 Family Hacks for a Low Cost, Happier, Healthier Summer By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS Wellness Facilitator 1. Seek active supports. If you are utilizing daycares, summer camp, sitters or others, pay attention to how they are approaching nutrition, activity and safety for your precious kids. Set expectations up front if you are choosing a sitter/ nanny regarding screen time, activity and treats. 2. Find your feeding site. Hunger is a real issue for many LPS families. Last year, over 100,000 free breakfasts and lunches were served during the summer for kids at over 40 sites. To locate the free meal site closest to you, go to: www.fns.usda. gov/summerfoodrocks 3. Grow some goodies. Container gardens in basic planting containers can be great experiences for kids. My favorite items are lettuce and herbs, as they are quick and easy. Look on the package to see expected growth time. Kids love to see how food grows and are more likely to try items they have grown. Saves on food cost as well. 4. Build a big book habit. Both school and community libraries are a treasure of free entertainment and can not only prevent those “I’m bored” moments, but it can also help prevent the summer academic slide. For elementary-age students, ask about “Play Aways,” which are graband-go devices with books on tape. 5. Market water to your family. Less cost. Less cavities. Less sticky everything. More health. From water bottles on the go to insulated cups to prevent sweating glasses on your furniture. Everyone wins with water between meals. 6. Let them play in a real way. Unplug your kids from the devices more often and help them find their play. Be it obstacle courses made from random items, made-up games or the traditional shooting hoops in the driveway, bring back active fun as the centerpiece of their summer. 7. Travel the trails. Walking, biking, scooting, whatever your family likes, the Lincoln area is rich with trail resources for free family adventures. Check out the map of community trails atwww. gptn.org. 8. Create food adventures. No money for travel? No problem. Explore a new world through trying new fruits and vegetables as they come into season. A couple of bucks can decrease your doldrums and potentially find a new family favorite. 9. Make alternative indoor plans. Extremely hot or rainy days can foil your outdoor plans. Keep kids active by helping them use www. gonoodle.com at home. Most students have had active classroom fun with these activities and they are built for kids to be active in smaller spaces, such as classrooms, so they can work well in homes. It also offers opportunities for calming, focus and stress reduction, which parents might find extremely helpful. 10. Bug repellent and sunscreen. All of that outdoor fun needs protective partners. If getting two layers on your kids is an issue, look for products that have both sunscreen and bug repellent in one. Be sure to give kids a once over for ticks and make sure they keep you aware of any bug bites. 11. Soak up the sleep. More hours of sun can lead us to later bedtimes. Still keep a structure to bedtime to help kids receive adequate rest and recovery. It’s one of our most vital tools to better health.

April LPS Learning Lunch: ‘Developing Young Men and Women’ Learning to be responsible. Making a difference in the community. Acting politely and respectfully. Dressing for success. Those are some of the lessons learned by members of the Young Men’s Club and Young Women’s Club at Huntington Elementary School. The two student clubs were the subject of the March LPS Learning Lunch, “Developing Young Men and Women,” held March 27 at the LPS district office. Huntington Principal Rik Devney started the Young Men’s Club five years ago with the overall mission of molding hand-selected fifth-grade boys into young men before they enter middle school. Three Huntington teachers started the Young Women’s Club two years ago with a similar mission. “It’s about how to empower and educate our students to make a difference in the community,” Devney said. “We really see some good things happening with the work we’re doing.” Since the clubs formed, 65 boys and 25 girls have been members. They participate in a variety of activities, including: • Volunteering at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo and Capital Humane Society. • Holding formal dances twice a year. • Learning table manners - which fork do I use for the main course? What do I with my napkin when I’m finished? How should I act at a formal meal? • For the boys, handing out carnations to female students at nearby Nebraska Wesleyan University on Valentine’s Day.

LSE students role models for respect when talking politics Chase Alphin and Abby Peterson don’t agree on much when they talk politics. Alphin, a junior, is president of the Young Republicans club at Lincoln Southeast High School. Peterson, a senior, is president of the school’s Young Democrats club. One thing they do agree on: People need to change how they talk about politics.

• Taking a field trip to a department store, where students pick out formal outfits, including ties for the boys and scarves for the girls. Boys learn how to tie their own ties.

Alphin and Peterson took turns reading the following joint statement over the school’s intercom system on March 28 during student announcements:

We have to make a presence. We have to have relevance wherever we go - and that’s in school and out in the community.”

However, it is more important than ever that we are all respectful and listen to each other. Each of us here has the common goal to make schools as safe as possible and this cannot be accomplished without help from everybody, regardless of differing opinions. So both of us, together, are asking for your help. In order to encourage respectful and progressive conversation, it is important that everyone, on both sides of the political spectrum, are listening and working to understand the other person’s point of view. Let’s all work together to create positive change.” Alphin and Peterson sit next to each other in economics class. It seems even more divisive following the Parkland shooting, Peterson said. “In a lot of our classes, people had different opinions and that led to some disagreements and disrespectful conversations,” she said. “We knew that wasn’t going to solve anything and we wanted to encourage positivity.” “I think students have a big role to play,” Alphin added. “I think we can be an example.”

Moore Middle School hosts Genius Hour Fair Moore Middle School hosted a Genius Hour Fair on March 26, the culminating event for sixth-graders who spent third quarter researching topics and creating displays and presentations that showcased their findings.

The term “Genius Hour” comes from Google, which allows employees to spend 20 percent of their work time on projects of their choice. This freedom for employees to pursue their passions has led to innovations such as Gmail and Google News.

Students and their projects filled the school’s multi-purpose room, where family and friends moved from one presentation to the next as students described their work.

Moore sixth-grade teacher Megan Jorgensen read online about teachers across the country using the Genius Hour concept to encourage “passion-driven learning.” She decided it would be a good fit for Moore, which opened in August 2017 with a mission of igniting a “passion in learners.”

They delved into topics as varied as their personalities - from chicken eggs to architecture, from electricity to influenza, from global extinction events to the effects of radiation on animals. They learned how to research their topics using reliable websites and databases, how to cite sources, how to analyze data and how to clearly present their information.

“Students learn so many lessons from this project. They learn how to make connections to all subject areas with their topic,” she said. “They learn to follow their passions.”

Southwest runner-up at State Speech

Arts & Humanities students plant seeds of community “Be not solitary, be not idle.” The quote is from the 17th-century author Robert Burton, but more than 400 years later it appeared in the book “Seedfolks,” written by Paul Fleischman and published in 1997. It also applies to students at the Lincoln Public Schools Arts and Humanities Focus Program and one of their recent projects, which centered around “Seedfolks” and its theme of building community through community gardens. First, students worked with a visiting slam poet and performed their own poems for each other. Then they attended a live performance of “Seedfolks” - a one-woman show that incorporates poetry - at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. And now they’re volunteering to plant a garden at the Bennett Martin Public Library.
