AROUND THE INDUSTY by Kiley McKinna
High Demand For Limousin Genetics.
W
elcome to the Limousin 365 annual Herd Bull Edition! As you page through this issue, you’ll find some of the breed’s very finest and mainstream relevant herd sires showcased in accompaniment with multiple feature stories and relevant industry news. As I write this column, pondering which direction to head, few words come to mind, but rather a feeling of the tide turning in regards to the overall demand for Limousin genetics. Currently, not only are we witnessing a massive surge in demand for Limousin-influenced show heifer prospects across the country but, perhaps more importantly, the beef industry appears to be thirsting for a Continental compliment of choice to our predominate Angus commercial cow herd base. That said, it’s with confidence I feel the Limousin breed is poised to meet the current industry narrative because of the improvements the breed cumulatively has made in terms of product quality and consistency over the last 15 years. As evidence to the aforementioned statements; First, to address the “show” world. I think it’s clear as you follow show reports across the country the acceptance, popularity, relative dominance of “Limi” heifers is truly remarkable and speaks largely to the phenotypic improvement of quality in our cattle. Now to address the current “industry call”. Traveling to most all the spring bull sales, it’s truly refreshing to visit with commercial producers that recognize the level of improvement in disposition, reproductive efficiency and carcass quality as reflected in their kill sheets. The improving sale reports are beginning to reflect that mainstream conversation and what’s more, is the rising number of new and younger faces in the sale crowds which lends itself to the assessment that we are inching closer to the industry call as the “Continental Compliment of Choice”. That in mind and in the spirit of the 2021 Herd Bull Edition, I’d like to encourage you to truly study your hole card this breeding season. First, understand your marketplace and the current cattle industry demands. Secondly, be sure to cater to your strengths while working towards improving upon your weaknesses. Third, be willing to ask questions, poll your customers, follow breeders
6
and industry affiliates. I think having a firm handle on those basic concepts along with a willingness to ask questions will undoubtedly simplify your breeding decisions and ultimately lead you to profitable breeding solutions. First and foremost, thank you to all of the advertisers, readership and those that continue to offer feedback on your official North American Limousin Foundation publication, Limousin365. Furthermore, there are a few house keeping items worthy sharing with you in regards to your publication. 1. From a staffing perspective, we’re pleased to announce the hiring of Sarah Johnson as well as the joint additions of both Peyton Haley and Lindsey Meyer (via Precision Marketing) to the Limousin 365 production team. We continue to strive to provide you with a service-oriented, industry-relevant and efficient Limousin promotion team. 2. The United States postal service continues to present challenges to all print publications from a mail delivery standpoint which we are not immune to. This subsequent challenge has created unique timing and delivery rates specifically to rural communities across the country. We appreciate your understanding and tolerance in this matter. The unique advantage Limousin365 has is our digital platform, www.Limousin365.com. This is two fold. It underscores our encouragement to frequently utilize the digital platform and you can rest assured, despite the current mail system inefficiencies, you can always view your print magazine on the appropriated publication date digitally. In closing, I hope you enjoy the 2021 Herd Bull Edition. I look forward to seeing you at spring sales and as always, we appreciate all constructive feedback as it relates to your magazine, Limousin 365. We are all in it together and Limousin proud.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I
by Dan Hunt
t is an honor to serve as your NALF President heading into 2021. The Limousin breed has been an integral part of my family’s livelihood for decades and we are truly invested in this breed of cattle and its membership. Since I have been involved with the NALF board, it is amazing to see how far we have come with technology and services, all in an effort to make superior quality seedstock. When I first began serving on the NALF board we were just getting used to our new registry system as we switched to DigitalBeef from the CREO system. The updated service has helped us tremendously to not only record and transfer cattle more efficiently, but helped us with our matings by utilizing the “matings tool” in the system as well. The ability to query potential sires against our cowherd with projected EPDs using the “matings tool” in DigitalBeef, has been of great value to us come breeding season to help us improve our EPD set as a whole. Having the ability to search for potential sires by their classification, along with polled and color status, is at our fingertips now. Revamping and upgrading the LIMS whole herd reporting program five years ago has improved information and accuracy on our EPDs as well. EPDs have improved dramatically the past five years on our cattle, which is a credit to our breeders and membership within the breed itself. The switch to IGS has proven to be a valuable asset to get EPDs generated on a weekly basis with the instantaneous incorporation of genomics, performance and pedigree data versus the old Cornell method of blending in MBVs into the genomic calculation. The greater accuracies reflected on our EPDs are apparent when looking at the progeny equivalents on both weight and carcass trait EPDs when combined with accurate performance data. The switch to SNP parentage versus the old micro-satellite has also helped to clean up parentage in our herdbook as well. We are continuing to upgrade to keep pace with technology and will remain focused on staying at that forefront as a NALF board. The LimVision Cow Herd project was launched last year and offered to LIMS members a chance to get their cow factories genomically-enhanced at a cheaper research rate. This program will be offered through the 2021 calendar year. This will also enable us to capture the research rate on genomics on our replacement heifers each year thereafter. I would encourage you to take advantage of the program prior to year-end if possible. The inclusion of more than 45,000 carcass phenotypes into the NALF herdbook this year puts Limousin down as a leader in actual carcass phenotype submissions among breed associations. This has increased the accuracy on carcass traits for many of our herd sires and their progeny in the system. This, in combination with the new USMARC update last year, resulted in improvement on our marbling
10
EPDs for both Limousin and Lim-Flex® by 0.2-0.3. Our family has seen this first hand, given the cattle dad and I feed and grid proving to us that our cattle not only excel in feed performance and lean yield, but have the ability to grade Choice as well. We feel Limousin cattle not only excel maternally as seedstock breeders ourselves, but realize their additional value when analyzing feedlot performance and harvest data as well. Capturing all of these dollars is critical when trying to stay in business given our tight operating margins today. We are excited as a NALF board to focus our attention to promoting and marketing the Limousin breed and the advantages they offer to the commercial cattle industry. In an effort to do this, our board feels we need to update the research on our cattle to verify those marketing claims through targeted research. We are excited to announce the formation of the North American Limousin Research Foundation, (NALRF). The mission of the NALRF is as follows: “To serve the beef industry through targeted science-based research efforts designed to advance, improve and promote the Limousin breed”. Read more about this exciting project later in this issue. This should be an exciting year for all engaged in the breed. Bull sale season has started off strong this year and we look forward to capturing more value for our genetics and increase the demand for both Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle in the future. I look forward to serving the membership throughout the next year and appreciate all your support in the country!

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY by Mark Anderson Executive Director North American Limousin Foundation
E
PDs have never looked better for the Limousin breed thanks to the dedication and commitment of members. Adjustments have been made with various inputs such as work order 1 at IGS and updated USMARC data, yet the vast improvement to EPDs has been achieved by exceptional matings made by NALF breeders. Vigorous usage of genomics is apparent, not only on AI sires, herd bulls, and donor dams but additionally, many members are taking advantage of the LimVision cowherd project. This is allowing breeders to make rapid trait improvement in short order. Those looking to market seedstock to the commercial cattle operator are not only improving their genetics, but also possess the power of increased accuracies of their EPDs as well. The recent large submission of carcass phenotypes, in combination with the previously mentioned advancements offer the opportunity to make rapid genetic progress for the serious Limousin seedstock breeder. Members have until the end of this calendar year to participate in the LimVision cowherd project to genomically-enhance their cow herds at the discounted rate offered by Neogen. If you have interest in participating and are a member of the LIMS whole herd program, you can contact Alison or Tammy at the NALF office. At the time of this writing, the bull sale season has started off extremely well throughout the country with averages exceeding last year, substantially in some sales. The opportunity and incentive to utilize Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics in a crossbreeding program for commercial cow/calf operators has never had more traction that it does today. When the breed switched its National Cattle Evaluation to IGS a few years ago, it became very apparent to the industry what Limousin breeders have known for quite some time. The Limousin breed offers the ability to make superior females with a solid set of maternal traits that can benefit the beef industry as a whole. This fact, combined with superior feed performance and carcass traits, should make Limousin cattle an evident choice to utilize in commercial crossbreeding programs. It is advantageous to benefit from the power of heterosis in a crossbreeding program, yet it goes to a whole other level when the cross is made with cattle that have a superior and well balanced EPDs. The commercial cow/calf operator desires calving-ease, fertility in the form of an easy-keeping female who delivers progeny that offer extra pounds at weaning time. After that, most want to be producing feeder cattle in high demand for feedlog performance and superior carcass

traits so they can market “reputation feeder cattle” at a higher price than market average. The end results increases their odds of achieving profitability on an annual basis. The current NALF board sees the improvement made by breeders of both Limousin and Lim-Flex® in recent years. They are intently focused on finding a vehicle and process to update research on our cattle which will hopefully document these advantages through targeted research. The ultimate goal is to attract more demand for Limousin genetics verified by an independent third party. To accomplish this, the board has approved the formation of the North American Limousin Research Foundation, (NALRF). Potential research projects will be funded by a combination of Founders & Contributors in addition to supplemental funding by the North American Limousin Foundation. Research conducted through universities and other entities can be rather expensive, but much of the documented research on Limousin cattle is outdated and not reflective of the kind of cattle breeders are currently producing. The NALF board strongly feels updated research on our cattle is needed to help increase demand and value for member’s cattle. Much of the membership have expressed similar views as well. Data provided through future research will be used to guide breed improvement efforts and inform breed marketing and communication strategies. Initially proposed research at South Dakota State University will focus on analyzing the supposed benefits Limousin and LimFlex® genetics can provide in a crossbreeding program. Updated EPDs and actual harvest data on fed cattle have indicated the high profit potential of utilizing our genetics in and Englishbased cow herd. The ability to make cattle have the power not only to provide more red meat yield in combination but also maintain the Choice quality grade and higher, is of major economic relevance. Cattle producing this kind of quality grade while only laying down 0.3-0.4 backfat with larger ribeyes and carcass weights lead to superior yield grades as well, which enhances profitability for both the feedyard and packing house sectors of the industry. In addition, utilizing Limousin genetics in a crossbreeding program with English-based cows allows feedyards to buy feeder cattle they can project and feed to larger outweights while maintaining feed efficiency resulting in lower cost of gains and provide lower breakevens on fed cattle. This is also a major economic factor when deciding which feeder cattle to purchase, but also to determine how much more one can pay for feeder cattle. The NALF board and members believe Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics can provide these valuable economic traits to the cattle industry. We just need to document and prove what our EPDs and current harvest data are telling us to help market and convey this

MEMBER AND INDUSTRY NEWS BRIEFS AI Sire and Donor Dam Information Reminder
All AI sires and donor dams born in 2015 or later are required to have a GGP-HD genomic profile on file in addition to parent verification for sires and sire verification for donor dams. Animals born before 2015 do not require the genomic profile but do require either parent or sire verification through SNP DNA typing. They must also be tested for any genetic condition (AM, NH, Proto, etc.) they are a potential carrier for. AI sire permits are recommended on any new AI sire and can be added by contacting either Alison at Alison@NALF. org or Tammy at Tammy@NALF.org or at 303-220-1693.
Ultrasound Data and Yearling Weights

Riding Shotgun It’s All About Product As we travel the highways and by-ways of the Limousin family and breed we often cuss and discuss the cattle business, sports, politics, great cheeseburgers and most of the time, the promotion and marketing of Limousin cattle. Through “Riding Shotgun” we invite you to join us in the righthand seat, so that we can let you in on what we find to be our marketing pet peeves, shortcuts and some of the favorite habits of top-flight professional producers. Grab a cup of coffee and take the ‘shotgun seat’—we are pleased to have you riding along.
T
he spring sale season is well underway and in our view from the Shotgun seat, it is obvious there is a demand for quality Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls. We see new people, repeat customers

and breeders with lots of interest in bulls that have thickness, power and a solid EPD set. There is a demand for performance bulls that can move, for thick bulls with expression and for bulls that have a number set with commercial appeal to it. In plain words, it follows completely one of our sayings on the road, “It’s all about product!” If you are finding that your customer demand is lacking, it might be time to look at your product. The market is extremely competitive. There are lots of places for commercial men to buy bulls of your breed and others. Pick up any progressive livestock paper and you can see the tens of thousands of bulls offered any week of the year. Now with internet buying and internet exposure, you are not only competing in your general area, but with the whole country. If your cattle do not compete, your marketing gets much tougher. You need to study your calf crop with a critical eye. There are lots of tools for improvement, if you are just raising a male calf with testicles, it is an uphill struggle. Speaking of product, I want to send a shout out to all of you that participated in benefit auctions through the early spring. Many of the auxiliary arms of the Limousin breed function with funds raised by quality organizations. NALJA, Heartland and various state organizations often have benefit auctions to continue their operations. Selling donated puppies, quilts, trips, embryos and semen gathers cash for worthy projects and all involved have a little fun in the process. Cheers to ACS, MC Marketing, R&R Marketing, Bev and Dean Summerbell of the Heartland and the nation’s Juniors and Juniors Advisors for finding creative ways to not only raise money but also foster camaraderie. If you see something at one of these auctions that you can use, give a call to the organizers, they could use your help and it goes to a good cause. Be careful out there and we will see you down the road. CONTACT THE AUTHOR Mark A. Smith email: grgenetics@aol.com phone: 515-229-5227

s we are experiencing a high demand for our Limousin and Lim-Flex product, it is critical to maintain a focus on our customers. When demand rises, and the prices continue to be easier to obtain, there are some instances where we fail to pay as much attention to the details as we should. With the visibility of the Limousin and Lim-Flex product in the marketplace, there is an incremental growth of customers offering genetics for sale, creating more internal competition. cases, it can be difficult to ensure that all of the necessary customer follow-up is completed (i.e. thank you note, follow-up call, etc.), so it is imperative that we make a concentrated effort to stay in close contact with our clientele! Those of us in the seedstock marketing business have realized over the years how important it is to pull into the driveway of repeat customers, along with any potential new ones. There is nothing better than a firm handshake and warm welcome for any customer. I urge all of you in the business to take time to write a “thank you” note, make a phone call and/or send a text to all of your customers shortly after their purchase of your product. We are all guilty of waiting until the night before a sale to make the effort to check in with our customers to see what their needs are, but staying in touch throughout the year helps connect you closer with the customer and helps convey your appreciation and gratitude for them, their time, their resources, and efforts in supporting your program. I firmly believe that when you get your “boots on the ground”, get out, visit, and socialize with your customers, it will pay huge dividends and more importantly solidify a long-lasting relationship. I know that the above comments are very simple concepts; however, reverting back to the basics is exactly what needs to happen to ensure our position in the cattle industry as one of the most sought after Breeds! I want to congratulate all of the Breeders that have already went to the marketplace with their sales! The product, natural interest, and resulting prices have been very commendable and for that I am proud to be associated with this Breed. For more than 30 years, I have been an eyewitness of all things good and bad in our Breed, and I could not be more excited and encouraged about what the future holds for all of us in this wonderful family of Limousin breeders! NALF ESTABLISHES THE NORTH AMERICAN LIMOUSIN RESEARCH FOUNDATION
W
hen the breed switched its National Cattle Evaluation to IGS a few years ago, it became apparent to the industry what Limousin breeders have known for quite some time. The Limousin breed offers the ability to make superior females with a solid set of maternal traits that can benefit the beef industry as a whole. This fact, combined with superior feed performance and desirable carcass traits should make Limousin cattle an evident choice to utilize in commercial crossbreeding programs. The current NALF board sees the improvement made by breeders of both Limousin and Lim-Flex® in recent years. They are intently focused on finding a vehicle and process to update research on our cattle which will document these advantages through targeted research. The goal ultimately is to create more demand for Limousin genetics verified by an independent third party. To accomplish this, the board has approved the formation of the North American Limousin Research Foundation, (NALRF). Potential research projects will be funded by a combination of Founders & Contributors in addition to supplemental funding by the North American Limousin Foundation. The mission of the North American Limousin Research Foundation (NALRF) is as follows: “To serve the beef industry through targeted science-based research efforts designed to advance, improve and promote the Limousin breed.” Research conducted through universities and other entities can be rather expensive, but much of the documented research on Limousin cattle is outdated and not reflective of the kind of cattle breeders are currently producing. The NALF board strongly feels updated research on our cattle is needed to help increase demand and value for members cattle. Much of the membership have expressed similar views as well. Data provided through future research will be used to guide breed improvement efforts and inform breed marketing and communication strategies. Initially proposed research at South Dakota State University will focus on analyzing the benefits Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics provide in a crossbreeding program. This research is expected to capture feed performance and harvest data on three different
32
contemporary groups. Updated EPDs and actual harvest data on fed cattle have indicated the highly profitable potential of utilizing Limousin genetics in an English-based cow herd. The proposed research is intended to capture and document that data. The ability to make cattle having the power not only to provide more red meat yield and lower external fat, but also maintaining the Choice quality grade and higher is of major economic relevance. Cattle that can produce this kind of quality grade, while only laying down 0.3-0.5 backfat with larger ribeyes and carcass weights, leads to superior yield grades as well, which enhances profitability for both the feedyard and packing house sectors of the industry. In addition, utilizing Limousin genetics in a crossbreeding program with English-based cows allows feedyards to buy feeder cattle they can project and feed to larger outweights while maintaining feed efficiency, resulting in lower cost of gains while providing lower breakevens on fed cattle. This is also a major economic factor when deciding which feeder cattle to purchase, but to also determine how much more one can pay for feeder cattle. It is estimated the cost of feed is the number one cost to the beef industry annually (65% the cost of beef production). The NALF board and member breeders believe Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics can provide these valuable economic traits to the commercial cattle industry and ultimately increase demand for Limousin genetics. We now just need to document and prove what our EPDs and current harvest data are telling us to market and convey this message to the feedyard and commercial cow/calf sectors of the beef industry. If you have an interest in helping fund future research for the Limousin breed and would like to be a part of the Founders & Contributors of the NALRF effort, please contact the NALF office in Aurora for details to make a fully tax deductible contribution to this important effort. DAVIS RANCHES Faith, Family & Limousin Cattle by Sarah Anne Johnson
A
Texas family devoted to faith, family and Limousin cattle, Davis Ranches is nestled in the heart of central Texas right outside the city of Brownwood. Brad, Traci and Blair Davis are the essence of true passion for the Limousin breed. Established in 1984, Davis Ranches began with three head of cattle Brad purchased with profits from his show steer. Today, they run more than 150 registered Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle. “Limousin was a great decision,” Brad mentioned while explaining his initial research before delving into what is now Davis Ranches.

A common denominator throughout every aspect of the Davis’ lives and cattle business are the people they’ve surrounded themselves with. An early mentor to Brad was Jack Stepp, the manager at M&L Limousin in the 1980s. Jack and his family have deep roots within the Limousin breed and show cattle industry. Brad reminisced, “Jack was and still is a huge influence in my life, not only as a cattleman, but as a Christian influence.” Another pivotal influence for Brad and

I grew up doing it and quickly realized why my dad “It’s important for me to befriend as many people as I can and have Corey and Brad partnered on a few loved it so much. I appreciate the good cattle for them to show, that’s why we do what we do. If I make cattle together while he was away at Texas A&M University and their upbringing my parents and this a difference to one kid, this is all worth it,” Brad Davis said.

relationship continued to flourish into something quite special. “My dream in college was to come back and run Brad’s program for him and it’s crazy to think of where we’re at now,” Corey said. As relationships and faith are the foundation of Davis Ranches, a very special female is at the core of each conversation and the foundation of many instrumental cattle throughout the entire program. EXLR Wonder 066M was the cow that started it all for Davis when Blair was an active junior. She exhibited a bred & owned champion heifer out of EXLR Wonder 066M, DL Wonder’s Tabitha 300T, who was by far a favorite throughout her years in the show ring. “We’ve had countless show heifers and bulls, incredible cows and even herd bulls that go back to Wonder. She still holds a special place in our hearts on the ranch,” Blair remarked. There are several cows Corey is truly proud of, but one that sticks out in his mind and for the future of Davis Limousin Ranch is the

For Blair, she can think of few things more beautiful in life than a pasture full of cows, especially Limousin cows. “Dad and Corey have done a great job purchasing, maintaining and breeding over the last several years. Dad has always had a great mind for the cattle business and Corey has a keen eye when it comes to good cattle. We

This is a passion for every member of the team and we are constantly working to be better.” An especially important aspect of the herd at Davis Ranches is the prolific and recently deceased ELCX Kings Landing bull. Over the past year, ELCX Kings Landing has been an incredible animal for their program and far beyond. Not only is he a favorite of many throughout the Limousin breed and one of Brad’s favorite bulls, Kings Landing holds a special place in Corey’s heart as well. “He has continued on page 40

continued from page 38 changed gears for us, he produces so many different types of good. I’ve always said I wanted to be a part of something that special and that was that bull for us,” Corey said. Everything the ranch has done and continues to do has surpassed any goal Brad ever had. Brad loves the young people, the show ring
A common denominator throughout every aspect of the Davis’ lives and cattle business are the people they’ve surrounded themselves with. Here Brad and Traci are pictured with friends and customers after a successful Limousin event.
and a goal of his is to see a young person win a national junior heifer show with a Davis Limousin female. “It’s important for me to befriend as many people as I can and have some good cattle for them to show, that’s why we do what we do. If I make a difference to one kid, this is all worth it,” Brad said. The relationships and family atmosphere are at the core of each goal Brad sets for the ranch and for good reason. Corey truly believes in the momentum behind the Limousin breed and the program at Davis Ranches. “We’re doing what we love and that to me is what makes this place special. Winning is fun, but we can go out in a pasture and talk about cows for hours with each other and that’s something that sets us apart,” Corey explained. At the end of the day, it’s all about the people, the cattle and a foundation of faith for the Davis family. Davis Ranches will have a presence in the Limousin breed for decades to come because the passion runs deep and it’s truly a family effort coming full circle. rices should begin a prolonged climb later this year. Finally. Fundamentals suggest cattle prices will start finding some traction later this year, before making more aggressive gains for at least the next couple of years. Part of the optimism has do with beef supplies relative to domestic per capita disappearance. USDA projects beef production in 2021 slightly more than last year at 27.2 billion lbs. But, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) expects per capita meat disappearance in the U.S. to decline about 1%, due to increased exports and reduced beef imports. Part of the price optimism moving forward also has to do with market leverage returning to producers and away from beef packers. During January’s annual International Livestock Forum, hosted by Colorado State University and the National Western Stock Show, Randy Blach, CattleFax CEO, explained fed cattle slaughter capacity utilization ranged from 102% in 2016 to 110% last year as cattle numbers ran ahead of hook space. As fed cattle supplies decline, capacity utilization will drift back toward 100%, mostly after this year. “The number of steers and heifers going through our packing plants over the course of the next several years is going to shrink. As it declines, so will our beef production, and prices are going to get higher,” Blach said. “We’ll see a transition to a higher trending, more profitable cow-calf operator, seedstock operator and cattle feeder. For this year, ERS forecasts the five-area average direct fed steer price at $113/cwt. in the first and second quarters, $115 in the third quarter and $120 in the fourth quarter for an annual average of $115.50. Last year’s average was $108.51 As for feeder cattle, ERS projects the average feeder steer price (750800 lbs., basis Oklahoma City) at $134/cwt. in the first and second quarters, $139 in the third quarter and $140 in the fourth quarter for an annual average of $136.75.
42
Early-release tables for USDA’s Long-Term Agricultural Baseline Projections are more bullish. They estimate the average feeder steer price this year at $138.50 and then just over $148 the next two years. Those projections peg the average five-area fed steer price at $114 this year, $120.99 in 2022 and $117.39 in 2023. That’s with the season average corn price projected at $3.60 to $3.65/bu. from now through 2024-25.
Grain Prices Pose Headwinds
Those projected corn prices seem plumb low, especially for this year, given the rampant increase in recent months. In the January World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE), USDA increased the forecast season-average corn price received by producers by 20¢ to $4.20/bu., based on lower production and ending stocks. The season average soybean price was forecast 60¢ higher at $11.15/bu. “The impetus for surging prices (soybeans) has come from adverse crop development conditions in Argentina, the third largest soybean producing country in the world and the leading exporter of soybean meal,” according to analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC). “Reduced availability of soybeans and soybean products from Argentina is forcing the world to focus on U.S. soybean supplies…Tightening supplies support a rising price trend in order to bid more plantings of the crop in the U.S. this spring versus corn and cotton.” Higher grain prices will change how beef production occurs more than the level of production, says Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in his earlyJanuary market comments “For example, higher ration costs will change feedlot demand for the type and size of feeder cattle preferred in feedlots. As high feed

continued from page 42 prices push feedlot cost of gain up, feedlots have an incentive to buy more pounds and place heavier feeder cattle,” Peel explains. “The change in feedlot demand for light versus heavy weight feeder cattle simultaneously provides incentives for stocker producers to add the needed additional weight to feeder cattle.” Of course, drought could further impact feed prices, as well as cattle flow. The U.S. Drought Monitor classified 62% of the continental U.S. from abnormally dry to exceptional drought, at the end of January. That was 35% more than the previous year.
COVID-19 Still Directing Traffic
All of the above comes after considering when exactly the nation and world contain the pandemic and how quickly domestic and global economies recover. “Although recent vaccine approvals have raised hopes of a turnaround in the pandemic later this year, renewed waves and new variants of the virus pose concerns for the outlook,” according to the January World Economic Outlook Update from the International Monetary Fund. “Amid exceptional uncertainty, the global economy is projected to grow 5.5% in 2021 and 4.2% in 2022.” Closer to home, the U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) expects COVID-19 vaccinations to reduce the number of new infections significantly, as well as social distancing. CBO forecasts real U.S. GDP at 3.7% this year and 2.4% next year. That’s based on an average of possible outcomes under current law. “But these projections are subject to an unusually high degree of uncertainty, and that uncertainty stems from many sources, including the course of the pandemic, the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies, and the response of global financial markets to substantial increases in public deficits and debt,” according to CBO’s An Overview of the Economic Outlook: 2021 to 2031. “As a result, the economy could expand substantially more quickly or more slowly than CBO projects. Labor market conditions could likewise improve more quickly or slowly than projected, and inflation and interest rates could rise more rapidly or slowly as well. Also uncertain is the impact of the pandemic on the economy over the longer term, including its effects on productivity, the labor force, and technological innovation.” Whether economic recovery is robust, anemic or average, the road ahead also likely depends on how various animal proteins respond to shifting supply chains spawned by pandemic disruptions.
Foodservice Sales Remain Under Pressure
“As the U.S. foodservice sector climbs out of the hole left by 2020, the animal protein sector will not only need to realign itself with the survivors of the last year, but also remain flexible,” says Will Sawyer, lead animal protein economist with CoBank. In the recent Great Grocery Grab report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange Division, Sawyer explains the pandemic spawned a shift to at-home food consumption not seen since the early 1980s. The abrupt change also forced the most significant shift in meat supplies the industry has experienced, diverting massive volumes of meat and
44
other food originally intended for restaurants into retail distribution channels and grocery stores. Further, Sawyer explains the importance of individual foodservice channels varies significantly by animal protein species and by producer. For instance, ground beef makes up a majority of beef volume through foodservice, but it represents only about one-third of the value, due to its low price point. Conversely, the high-value steaks and roasts that are primarily sold in full-service restaurants and hotels comprise a quarter of the volume of beef sold through foodservice, but nearly half of beef sales. Some foodservice channels rebounded through the pandemic, but full-service restaurants continue to face double-digit declines in sales. In November, full-service restaurant sales were down 36% compared to last year while total foodservice sales were down 17%. Sawyer adds that in-restaurant dining will be vulnerable as long as consumers remain wary of dining indoors and COVID-19 cases remain elevated. Although foodservice sales continue to improve, the report suggests sales may not return to pre-pandemic levels until the second half of 2022.
Beef Demand is Extraordinary
In the meantime, domestic beef demand continues at a remarkable pace, especially considering all thrown at it through the pandemic. In fact, using the Annual U.S. Consumer Beef Demand Index as the gauge, Blach says beef demand last year was the strongest in more than three decades. “Consumer demand will be supported by additional federal stimulus for a time, but continuing macroeconomic challenges will persist through the year,” Peel explained. “The continuing pandemic and the time needed for vaccine implementation suggest that much of the promise of 2021 may be pushed into the second half of the year. In the meantime, uncertainty and volatility are likely to remain elevated and risk management continues to be a key management and marketing consideration.”
Prices and inflation could pose some demand challenges.
Retail beef prices for 2020 were 9.7% more than the prior year, the steepest increase since 2014, when prices climbed 13.4% year over year, according to David Anderson, Extension livestock economist at Texas A&M University. Anderson explains price increases in 2014 stemmed from tight supplies fostered by the drought. This year, much of it had to do with disruptions caused by the pandemic. “Most of the increase in beef prices in 2020 occurred in the second quarter of the year, with price increasing 18% year over year. Beef prices also increased by 11% in the third quarter over the prior year,” Anderson says, in a recent issue of In the Cattle Markets. “In the aftermath of the drought, beef prices registered five consecutive quarters of year over year increases as supplies continued to decline and demand grew. In case anyone wondered, 2016 and 2017 were the last years that average all fresh retail beef prices declined compared to the prior year.” Anderson notes All Fresh retail beef prices last year were above 2019 the entire year. The pre-pandemic price in March averaged $5.96/lb.

continued from page 37 and finished the year at $6.23. It peaked in June at $7.38. “Several factors may be contributing to higher reported retail prices when wholesale and live cattle prices have been at or below last year’s levels,” Anderson says. “The data reflects only grocery store prices. Grocery stores have sold more beef, in volume and value, compared to the year before, due to restaurant shutdowns. It’s also likely that costs have increased between wholesale and retail levels due to compliance with coronavirus restrictions and constraints in processing. It may be difficult to get average retail prices below pandemic levels in coming months as beef production is expected to decline cyclically this year and, hopefully, the economy is able to fully open expanding restaurant demand.

International demand for U.S. beef should also rebound from last year’s pandemic-based supply and demand disruptions. “Demand for U.S. beef in the global retail sector has been outstanding and we expect this to continue in 2021,” says Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). “Unfortunately, foodservice continues to face COVID-related challenges. We expect a broader foodservice recovery this year, especially from mid-2021, but will likely still see interruptions in some markets.” Although U.S. beef exports for January through November remained lower year over year, they stormed back in November, according to data released by USDA and compiled by USMEF.
November beef exports totaled 115,337 metric tons (mt), up 6% from a year earlier and the most since July 2019. Export value climbed 8% year-over-year to $707.5 million. November beef muscle cut exports were the third largest on record at 91,338 mt (up 13%), valued at $630.4 million (up 11%). Beef export value averaged $338.43 per head of fed slaughter in November, up 10% from a year earlier and the highest since April. The January-November average was $298.01.
Cow Numbers Static
So far, neither the pandemic, nor drought, altered the size of the nation’s beef cow herd much. There were 31.16 million beef cows at the start of the year, according to the latest semi-annul Cattle report from USDA. That was 181,000 head fewer or 0.58% less than the previous year. The number of beef heifers retained for replacement of 5.81 million head was 3,200 head more than the previous year, just 0.06% more. “Both the inventory of beef replacement heifers, at 18.7% of the beef cow herd, and the number of heifers calving are at a level that does not indicate either herd liquidation or expansion, though the levels could support limited herd expansion in the coming year,” Peel explained. MAN BECK G CK AND FARMIN LIVESTO

estled in the heart of potato country in Idaho is a herd of beautiful Lim-Flex cattle. On the irrigated plains of the Snake River Valley near Roberts, Idaho, is the home of Beckman Livestock & Farming. Owned by Wade and Vicki Beckman, alongside their son, Sedar Beckman, and his family, Danna and Winston, the operation features 100 purebred Limousin, Lim-Flex® and Angus females, as well as an 800-acre farm where they grow row crops, alfalfa, hay and malt barley. “Our annual precipitation is about 10.5 inches here,” said Wade Beckman. “We are a desert without the river, and irrigation makes things work around here. It’s a very scenic spot. I can see the Tetons from my window, and Jackson Hole and Yellowstone are just 100 miles from our place.” In addition to the gorgeous Idaho scenery, the Lim-Flex cattle that roam the valley make the views extra sweet for Wade and his family. The Beckmans got their start in the Limousin business in 1979 after they checked out some powerful and muscular Limousin bulls at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. “I was so impressed by the big butts on those Limousin bulls, I just knew I had to try this breed out for myself on our commercial cows,” said Beckman. “Back at home, a neighbor was using Limousin bulls already, and we had the opportunity to purchase a percentage bull from him for use

in our own herd. Being in the red meat industry, I figured this was a good way to add more beef to the cattle I was raising.” In the ’80s and ’90s, Beckman worked for a seedstock operation where he gained valuable experience in running a purebred cattle business. In 1994, when the operation dispersed, Wade and Vicki started their own seedstock company and have been focused on building the genetics of their breeding program ever since. The Beckmans run a 100% artificial insemination program, aiming for a 50-day calving window without clean-up bulls. Over the years, they have invested in semen interest in several bulls, including MAGS Aviator. They use a wide variety of bulls to match their desired breeding goals including LVLS Bank Account, MAGS Cable, CJSL Creed, CJSL Data Bank, CJSL Dauntless, AHCC Earning Power, AHCC Easy Rider, TNGC Empire, MAGS Firestone, AHCC Hemi, MAGS Zodiac, Musgrave Exclusive, SAV Raindance, SAV Renown and SITZ Stellar. “Every cow is designed to raise feminine females and big stout bulls,” said Beckman. “We are focused on raising cattle that will help

our commercial buyers by adding value to their calves. We believe in heterosis and carcass quality, and the Lim-Flex® cattle are hard to beat!” The Beckmans have DNA-tested the entire cowherd through the LimVisions program. The data collected, he said, has been valuable in making breeding and culling decisions. To assist in putting this data to work is their son-in-law, Matt Spangler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln beef genetics specialist, and their daughter, Devori Spangler, who has her master’s degree in animal breeding and genetics. The couple reside in Nebraska with their son, Jack, but they share their knowledge to help shape the breeding program for the Beckman herd back in Idaho.
Beckman Livestock and Farming hosts an annual bull sale in March, alongside area breeders Adams Angus Acres, LLC and Rimrock Angus. Working together allows the three seedstock businesses to compile the volume needed to attract buyers. The Snake River Valley Genetics sale is held at Blackfoot Livestock Auction Company in Blackfoot, Idaho, each year. All bulls are DNA tested. continued on page 52

This year will also mark the Beckman’s second annual female sale, which is scheduled for the last Saturday in October. Bull and heifer information can be found at www.beckmanlivestock.com. In addition to raising high-quality Lim-Flex® cattle, Beckman also serves as the secretary for the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) board of directors. “I’m starting my second term this year, and my experience on the board has been a positive experience where I’ve been able to listen to viewpoints from a diverse set of producers, running different types of cattle in vastly different parts of the country,” said Beckman. “Last year was tough in increasing our registration fees, and we saw our numbers dip, but our breed continues to move forward with new and innovative research projects that I believe will highlight the breed in a very positive way. We have a great deal of exciting things to look forward to, and I’m proud of our breed for continuing to move forward in tough times.” As for the breed, Beckman is excited about the growing enthusiasm for Limousin and Lim-Flex® genetics. “With Limousin cattle, I admire the things they are good at — highyielding carcasses, heavy muscling and big ribeyes,” said Beckman. “Anytime you can put less into something and get more, it’s a very good deal. We just need to continue to improve our quality grade and breed for added marbling to continue to move the breed forward. “The longevity of the females is also fantastic. We are set up to dominate the black cow market by increasing the commercial producer’s bottom line with the type of cattle we raise. I believe we can add marbling without taking away the breed’s heavy muscling. “With the attributes our breed has, we can make some exceptionally good cattle. These Lim-Flex® females are as good as they make them. I would stack them up against a black baldie cow anytime, any place!” ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Amanda Radke raises Limousin cattle with her family at NOLZ Limousin in Mitchell, SD. espite pandemic disruptions, consumer demand for beef at home and around the globe remained strong in 2020, a trend that will continue in 2021 and beyond, especially as foodservice operations begin to fully reopen. The strong demand, combined with expected higher cattle prices, signal an optimistic future for the beef industry, according to CattleFax, which presented an outlook session during the virtual 2021 Cattle Industry Convention Winter Reboot in February. According to CattleFax CEO Randy Blach, cattle numbers will continue to contract in 2021, and producers will gain leverage on packers and retailers and margin distribution will be more equitable. Packing capacity is expected to increase slowly with the addition of more small-scale plants, and U.S. meat exports will continue to grow. Overall, profitability is expected to improve significantly for cow/calf producers. Lost incomes due to unemployment were replaced by government transfer benefits and household wealth increased more than $620 billion in 2020, according to Blach. In 2020, total meat sales volume at retail was up 10 percent and total dollar sales at retail up 18 percent, with beef ’s share of the increase in spending accounting for 45 percent or $5.7 billion. Consumers also saved at record levels during the pandemic resulting in U.S. household net worth rising $5 trillion, which bodes well for beef demand going forward. As beef demand reached record highs in 2020, cattle producers didn’t capture much of the margin with the bottleneck created due to plant closures as a result of COVID-19. According to Blach, the margin exists, and redistribution will lead to improving prices in the second half of 2021 and into 2022 and 2023. “The bottom line is that things are on the mend, with producers gradually recapturing margin,” he said. “A one percent shift in margin will result in $6 per hundredweight increase on fed price.” Kevin Good, vice president of industry relations and analysis at CattleFax, reported that 1.2 million head of cattle were liquidated in 2019-2020 after a 6.3 million head expansion between 2014 and 2018. Even with fewer cattle in the system, beef production still increased. Mild liquidation is anticipated in 2021 due to drought conditions and higher feed costs, said Good, and he estimates a U.S. beef cow inventory of just under 31 million head in 2022.
54
Good says 2021 is a tale of two halves. “There are more cattle in the system early in 2021 with big supplies on feed and heavy weights, however the second part of the year will transition to tighter calf crops and tighter slaughter,” he said. In 2021, total slaughter is expected to be up 700,000 head to 33.5 million head, average carcass weights 4 pounds lighter and beef production up 500 million pounds from 2020 to 27.6 billion pounds. Per capita beef consumption is expected to grow slightly to 58.6 pounds per person in 2021, up from 58.5 pounds in 2020, although per capita red meat and poultry consumption is expected to decrease to 218.7 pounds per person from 221.7 pounds per person in 2020. “Over the last 20 years, beef market share increased from 40 to 48 percent, up 2 percent in 2020,” said Good. “Improvements in genetics, quality and consistency have created a better product from five or 10 years ago and have helped increase demand, taking market share away from pork and poultry.” Good forecasts the average 2021 fed steer price at $119 per hundredweight, up from $109 per hundredweight in 2020, with a range of $110-$128 per hundredweight throughout the year. All cattle classes are expected to trade higher than a year ago, and prices are expected to improve over the next three to four years. The 800lb. steer price is expected to average $145 per hundredweight with a range of $135-$160 per hundredweight, and the 550-lb. steer price is expected to average $168 per hundredweight, with a range of $160-$180 per hundredweight. Finally, Good forecasts utility cows at an average of $64 per hundredweight with a range of $52$74 per hundredweight. Trade continues to be a hot topic, with U.S. beef prices competitive for Asian markets. According to Good, exports in 2021 are expected to increase by 5% primarily to Asian markets like Japan, South Korea and China, with declining imports from Australia and New Zealand. Although only 120 million pounds of beef were exported to China in 2020, that market is expected to grow to more than 300 million pounds per year over the next few years. “The U.S. is the largest beef producer on the planet, producing 75 percent of all high-quality fed beef in the world, and our product

is different from competitors,” said Blach. “As the global population increases at a rate of 83 million people per year, U.S. agriculture is poised to play a key role with increasing exports.” Mike Murphy, CattleFax vice president of research and risk management services, estimates there will be 181 million planted acres of corn and soybeans in 2021, the largest ever combined acres for those two commodities. “That number is likely to be even higher, and in some regards it needs to be larger to balance the demand and build back supply,” said Murphy. Although corn should be able to balance supply and demand, soybeans will have a tighter supply globally, with a smaller crop expected from South America. As China rebuilds its pork industry following their battle with African Swine Fever, they are looking for higher quality feed ingredients, such as corn and soybeans, according to Murphy. The U.S. has the supply available to provide the estimated 700 million bushels of corn that China is expected to accept. Spot prices for soybeans are expected to be $13.50-$16.50 per bushel for the remainder of 2021. “As soybean prices drive higher, soybeans will have a greater influence on the value of corn, bringing corn prices with it,” said Murphy. He noted, however, any scares from Mother Nature this spring and summer will have concerning impacts. All session panelists agreed that weather will be a major factor impacting the beef industry and agriculture as a whole in 2021. Although the La Niña weather pattern has leveled off, it will be making a return with warm and dry conditions over most of the United States into the summer, according to Dr. Art Douglas, professor emeritus at Creighton University. Douglas indicated that the southwest U.S. will be warmer than normal, and the western half of the country will be relatively dry. In addition, dry conditions in the Rockies will eventually extend into the central corn belt, causing concerns for corn and soybean growers. “The Pacific jet stream is positioned far north from normal preventing moisture from reaching the continent,” said Douglas. “The only significant moisture will be in the Ohio Valley and along the Canadian border from northeast North Dakota into Minnesota.” Blach concluded the session with an overall positive outlook, expecting beef demand to remain solid, foodservice markets improving significantly and beef and cattle prices trending higher through 2024. He also noted that plant-based protein alternatives will continue to grow market share, but gains will be slow. Blach indicated that increased consumer interest in sustainability, food safety protocols, animal care and traceability creates opportunities for producers to differentiate their products if they choose. “Consumers are voting with their pocketbooks and buying beef,” said Blach. “The industry should take note, stay focused on quality, continue delivering what the consumer desires and tell their great story.”

Mineral Imbalances Should Be Considered by Susan Himes Communications Specialist Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service
R
anchers need to keep in mind that the wrong quantities of minerals can be dangerous or even deadly to cattle, said experts from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. What works for one livestock operation will not always work for a neighbor when it comes to mineral supplements. When it comes to cattle and minerals, what works for a rancher 700 miles away may actually work better for you than what works for a neighbor seven miles down the road; it all depends on what is in your soil, supplements, feed, forage and water supply. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to minerals,” stressed Joe Paschal, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Corpus Christi. “What works for your neighbor’s cattle won’t necessarily work for you. There are a lot of factors producers must take into consideration.”
“Proper livestock nutrition is a key factor in your cattle’s health and productivity,” added Thomas Hairgrove, DVM, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension cattle veterinary specialist in the Texas A&M University Department of Animal Science. “Knowledge of your herd’s mineral status is fundamental to developing an optimal herd health program.” The key to understanding individual needs centers on the total nutrition of the herd. For example, diets high in protein and/ or potassium or low-carbohydrate diets can impair magnesium absorption, said Hairgrove. He said zinc and copper need to be absorbed in a specific ratio. Excess zinc reduces the amount of copper absorbed and excess iron or sulfur can interfere with absorption of other minerals. continued on page 60

Upshur County Case
“In other words, an excess or deficiency of one mineral affects how other minerals function in the animal,” said Hairgrove. Sometimes, he said, extreme cases can lead to death in a herd. So, what happens when you find a dead cow, or multiple dead cows over a period of a few months or a year?
Burleson County case
“In Burleson County we had a producer who had almost 20 head of cattle die over a period of a year,” said John Grange, AgriLife Extension agent for Burleson County. “This was an older producer in his 90s and when his son became aware of the situation, they consulted their local veterinarian.” The veterinarian was having trouble diagnosing the issue, so she contacted Texas A&M AgriLife. Grange said once he, Paschal and Hairgrove put their heads together, they decided to conduct several tests to rule out possible causes. “Working as a team, we conducted tests on hay, forage, soil and water samples,” he said. “Dr. Hairgrove also pulled blood and urine samples on the cattle.” Grange said they were able to rule out many common issues and get to the core problem for the producer and that by utilizing the entire team not only were they able to help this producer, but ultimately aid in another local case as well.
Testing
The Burleson County producer found most of the animals observed experienced a sudden death in the pasture. The few animals observed appeared to exhibit grass tetany signs, which are usually associated with magnesium deficiency. Urine and blood samples were taken from 10 cows and submitted to the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory to determine mineral status. These indicated only a low serum copper status, which would not cause sudden death. Magnesium deficiency cannot always be evaluated from urine or blood. The most sensitive and practical test to determine the animal’s magnesium status and predict supplementation value requires measuring urinary creatinine and magnesium. Further testing indicated these cattle were deficient in magnesium in their diet. These cows were determined to be also deficient in selenium, as shown in alternate testing strategies. Analysis of soil, forage and water confirmed the deficient dietary status of this herd. Protein, energy and mineral supplementation based on forage, water and soil analysis began, and follow up with the owner indicates no more death loss. “It is never as simple as putting out a mineral block and assuming that it will meet your cattle’s needs,” stressed Hairgrove. “This producer’s mineral supplementation consisted of white salt, yellow salt and trace mineral block, yet the deaths of 20 animals appear related to their mineral status.” Hairgrove said the take-home message is to work with your local veterinarian and extension county agents to interpret laboratory results relative to your cattle’s body condition, forage and water quality, and potential for disease ortoxic plants.
60
Hairgrove and Paschal both recall other memorable cases over the past year scattered across the state. A novel case involves bison in Upshur County. “When the producers first came in my office about their dying bison, I didn’t have a clue about bison,” said Kaitlyn Slover, AgriLife Extension agent for Upshur County. “I quickly called my regional program leader, Larry Pierce, and he pointed me in the direction of Dr. Hairgrove.” Bison are known to have issues with internal parasites, especially with high-density stocking. After speaking with Hairgrove, Slover determined she needed to collect fecal samples to determine if internal parasitism was the cause of the deaths. Internal parasites were present, but the results of three necropsies indicated a severe mineral imbalance with high zinc and low copper liver levels. “We also ran soil samples, water samples, forage samples and hay samples,” she said. “Through all these tests, we were able to confirm the bison were suffering from high zinc and low copper levels.” They also consulted with Jason Banta, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist in Overton, on feed, minerals and hay. They were ultimately able to come up with a plan for the producers. Although cattle and bison belong to the same family, Bovidae, and share a distant ancestor, their nutrition and health needs are not the same. “Everyone hates to hear about animals dying, but the research that we have been able to conduct because of these deaths will prove to be important for other producers worldwide for years to come,” Slover said.
Anderson County Case
In Anderson County, a producer lost four cows over about a year. This was concerning because the cattle were not old and didn’t have any apparent health issues. The producer contacted the local AgriLife Extension office in an effort to find aid in determining the possible causes of death. After looking at and ruling out a range of possibilities and evaluating tissues samples, it was determined that the cattle most likely died of copper toxicity. “Unfortunately, trace mineral toxicity is becoming more common especially when producers feed multiple supplements with added trace minerals or use drenches or injectable mineral products in addition to a well-formulated mineral supplement,” said Lamb. “It is important to provide a mineral supplement, but you don’t want to overdo it as that can lead to additional problems.” “The reality is there is a lot of cropland that has been turned into pasture that is very low in soil mineral, not just nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, but many of other soil minerals too,” said Paschal. “Before putting animals out to graze on a new location, a little soil and water testing and forage analysis can go a long way. If you know what you are working with in advance, it will really be to your animals’ benefit.” Paschal added that “Dr. Google” doesn’t have the answers and should not be considered a reliable source and that a little testing, common sense, and best management practices can go a long way in stopping preventable deaths.

LIMOUSIN LEADS THE WAY IN COLLECTING CARCASS DATA
C
arcass trait EPDs for Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle are now among the most accurate and predictable in the industry, thanks to a cooperative effort between the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF), International Genetic Solutions (IGS) and Feedlot Health Management Services, Ltd. The leap forward comes with the inclusion of more than 45,000 actual harvest data phenotype records from pedigreed Limousin and Lim-Flex-influenced cattle into the IGS national cattle evaluation. “An ongoing challenge in estimating carcass EPDs is the lack of carcass phenotypes,” says Randie Culbertson Ph.D., IGS lead geneticist. “Considering carcass phenotypes measure the attributes of the actual end-product we are focused on producing in the beef industry, improving accuracy of our carcass EPDs is imperative to making genetic improvement in these traits. However, the collection of carcass data to be used in genetic evaluations remains an ongoing challenge. The implementation of more than 45,000 carcass records into the IGS genetic evaluation represents a 52% increase in actual carcass phenotypes in our entire IGS database and will have a significant impact on the accuracy of our genetic prediction for carcass traits.” “Incorporating this amount of actual carcass data, directly into the National Cattle Evaluation at IGS, is unparalleled,” says Mark Anderson, NALF Executive Director. “What’s even more exciting is the large volume of data we plan to add on a quarterly basis. The carcass phenotypes generated will greatly enhance accuracy, not only on the EPDs of sires in the NALF herdbook, but also on related cattle throughout their pedigreed bloodlines. This will also greatly enhance carcass progeny equivalents when genomicallyenhancing cattle and will result in improved predictability in the mating decisions our breeders make, especially as it relates to highly heritable carcass traits.” Wulf Cattle of Morris, Minnesota, made inclusion of the unprecedented number of carcass phenotypes possible. Wulf Cattle is one of NALF’s largest producers of Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle. Besides producing seedstock, the operation also feeds cattle in commercial yards throughout the central United States. Wulf Cattle has long made a significant commitment to capture carcass records from fed beef cattle purchased from commercial cow/ calf operators using their Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls. This same commitment applies to collecting carcass records from the firm’s BeefBuilder™ cattle. Other NALF members engaged in cattle feeding are also providing carcass phenotype records for the enhanced genetic evaluation. “With the initial data set and the expected large monthly flow of new records from the BeefBuilder™ program, Limousin and LimFlex cattle are among the best characterized carcass genetics on the
64
planet,” says Robert Weaber, Ph.D. of Kansas State University, a noted industry geneticist. He worked with the IGS science team to usher in this new era of carcass evaluation for NALF and Limousin breeders. Weaber explains each Wulf Cattle bull in the genetic evaluation represents at least several hundred progeny carcass records, with some having 1,000 or more. “The new carcass evaluation provides Limousin and Lim-Flex breeders the information necessary to make more precise and predictable breeding and selection decisions than ever before as they continue their quest to increase profitability throughout the beef value chain,” Weaber says. “Enhanced data-sets, like the one we’re creating, enable our breeders to not only create better cattle at an accelerated rate, but provide more consistency and predictability to commercial cow/calf operators and the entire beef value chain,” says Curt Wieczorek, NALF ex-officio and second-generation Limousin breeder from Mount Vernon, South Dakota. “This effort is a win for the beef industry and will certainly help solidify our breed’s long-standing position as the carcass breed,” Wieczorek says. “The current market place demands cattle that can hit consumerdriven targets in terms of quality grade while achieving a higher percentage of Yield Grade 1-3 carcasses that deliver improved red meat yield,” Anderson says. “As importantly, current market signals are asking us to do that while simultaneously taking cattle to larger out-weights without sacrificing feed efficiency.” EDITOR’S NOTE: BeefBuilder™ cattle from Wulf Cattle are the result of crossbreeding proven Limousin and Lim-Flex® bulls with Holstein and Jersey cows. BeefBuilders are high quality grading, consistent, beef-type cattle with improved feeding performance and superior red meat yield, compared to straight-bred dairy cattle.

Building Upon the Legacy Bringing the Limousin breed back into the commercial sector is a goal the Callahan Brothers are hoping to aid in. They were recognized for their efforts this past January when they were named the North American Limousin Foundation Commercial Producers of the Year.

or more than three decades the Callahan family has worked to build their operation with quality Limousin cattle. Brothers TJ and Jake Callahan are striving to build upon the legacy their father founded back in 1990. Based in Centerview, Missouri, the Callahans run their operation on both owned and rented ground in the area across a 30-mile spread. “We are right around the 300 head mark, which was our goal at one time. Now we are looking forward to 350 or 400 head,” says TJ. Watching the growth in their operation has provided pride beyond measure; but while looking to the future, it is clear the growth will continue. The brother duo says, “Ultimately, we would like to own everything outright, eliminating the debt lowers the overhead, which would allow us to operate easier.” In a world where cattle margins are tighter than ever it is important to carefully watch the operation input. Feed costs account for a large part of input budgets, so a careful balance must be provided. Backgrounding cattle demands enough feed to have the average daily gain (ADG) at peak performance, while mitigating the cost of that feed.
“We have started using silage and that has helped cut back on the amount of grain fed,” says TJ. Also helping with feed input cost is the brother’s feed business. They mix and deliver bulk feed to clients across the area while also being able to provide their own product. Ensuring the proper mix and amount of feed for the cattle during each stage is crucial to their outstanding ADG numbers. Creep is fed to calves and once they move to the background pen they are started on a total mixed ration (TMR) which consists of silage, corn and a complete pellet. “We build them up to 750 or 800 pounds through a balanced diet and then send them to market,” says the brothers. Building the herd to its current size and growing their feed business has allowed Jake to work the farm full time. “An ultimate goal would be for us both to be able to work the farm full time along with my son, but for now, I continue to work off-farm full time,” says TJ. Running a herd split between spring and fall calving allows them to be more critical of the cattle they retain versus the ones they sell. Having two seasons of calving allows them to work through and

rotate heifers and cows to ensure their efficiency during the calving season. This also provides them with a twice a year opportunity to sell beef direct to consumers. TJ says, “We take orders for spring and fall sales and keep enough head back for that. It is usually somewhere around 15 to 20 head each year.” The brothers attribute a host of their success to their critical culling protocol. Evaluating docility, conformation, birth weight, and calvingease they can easily group them into a keep or cull group. “We’re looking to raise the fertility level of our cattle, so now we’re picky; if they are open, they are gone,” says the brothers. Evaluating their head like this specifically calls for detailed records. As most traditional producers, the Callahan Brothers utilize a paper record system. That system provides them birth and weaning weights, and any other illness or treatment records which helps them with each cow’s health and performance records. As the world transitions from hard copy to digital, producers may find it tedious to change how they keep their records. North American
Limousin Foundation’s DigitalBeef system is a convenient way to input records and have traits logged digitally. “It will be easy once I get comfortable with it, having everything right there will be great,” says TJ. Bringing the Limousin breed back into the commercial sector is a goal the Callahan Brothers are hoping to aid in. Several breed characteristics make Limousin an ideal commercial beef breed.
“We have started using silage and that has helped cut back on the amount of grain fed,” says TJ.

“Muscling, that’s a big one and average daily gain after weaning. The performance after weaning for the Limousin breed is outstanding,” says the brothers. With their outstanding leadership and production, the Callahan Brothers hope they can provide insight to other commercial producers to the benefits of the breed. Continuing to build their commercial operation on the solid Limousin foundation their father started has proven successful, and they want to share that success with other commercial producers. “We do a good job and people see our success and that spreads through word of mouth. If we continue to perform, then it will help push the breed,” says TJ. The benefits to adding Limousin traits to a commercial herd can be observed in the Callahan operation. The performance of the breed during the backgrounding stage has proven to be profitable, even in uncertain years as of late. With lean cattle margins, producers are forced to think out of the box to continue being profitable. One solution seems simple: adding performance characteristics. “We have a small registered herd and raise our own bulls. I’m hoping with our performance being seen that more producers will look to add a proven Limousin bloodline to their operation,” says TJ. By proving the benefits of Limousin characteristics with their intensive herd management the Callahan operation proves to be an essential component to promotion of the breed. Many years of continued hard work and dedication has brought their operation to the forefront of the Limousin community and provided them a spotlight to promote the breed in a commercial setting.

Invest in Genetics to Maximize Your Profit Potential by Mark Z. Johnson Extension Beef Cattle Breeding Specialist Oklahoma State University
B
reeding season is upon us and it’s time to consider our investment in genetics to maximize the profit potential of the calves that will be born next year. With more genetic information and technology available than ever before, we address the process of determining what traits are economically important in your operation. There are three primary goals of any breeding season: 1. Get cows settled as early in the breeding season as possible. 2. Get cows bred to bulls with highest possible genetic values. 3. Achieve both as economically as possible by getting cows bred to fewest possible bulls. In this article, we look closer at number 2. This topic should be analyzed from your own unique perspective based upon characteristics of your operation such as: 1. How and when do you intend to market your calf crop? (at weaning, as yearlings, as fed cattle, as bred heifers or open replacement females) 2. To what type of females will you be mating the bull? (heifers, cows, size of cows) 3. Will you be selecting herd replacements from the resulting heifers? 4. What is your production environment? 5. What is your economic situation regarding production inputs and marketing endpoints? 6. What level of management can you provide? Most beef breed Sire Summaries currently include Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) for a variety of traits. These include
multiple genetic predictors of calving-ease, several traits that would be considered as maternal performance, growth at different ages, feed intake and feed efficiency. In addition, several traits indicating carcass merit such as marbling, ribeye size, external fat thickness and carcass weight. Various Bio-economic indexes are also reported. A Bio-economic index is a genetic value derived from assigning an economic weighting to several EPDs based on their anticipated value at a specific marketing endpoint. An example would be a Terminal Sire Index (TSI), which is the result of assigning a dollar value to units of post-weaning growth EPDs as well as the EPDs that indicate Quality Grades, Yield Grades and Carcass Weight. At some point, through the segmented chain of beef production, many (if not all) of these traits are economically important. Yet, depending on the unique characteristics of your operation, only a few of these traits are economically relevant to you. For example, the TSI mentioned above would be a useless selection tool for an operation that sells all their calves at weaning since it is based on genetic values for traits that occur post-weaning. Another example would be ignoring EPDs predicting maternal performance if you don’t intend to retain heifers as herd replacements and plan to market your entire calf crop as finished cattle. Bottom line: consider your own unique operation and marketing plan for calves when deciding how to invest your bull buying dollar. Select bulls offering strong genetic values for the traits that will pay off the most for your operation!

by Dr. Tonya Amen Geneticist for North American Limousin Foundation
I
nstead of covering current EPDs or Indexes or reporting on updates to the National Cattle Evaluation, this month I am writing to solicit data for a new EPD currently being researched by International Genetics Solutions (IGS) and its partners. Dry Matter Intake (DMI), measured in pounds, is an expression of feed intake on a dry matter basis, such that a higher value indicates more feed consumed and a lower value indicates the animal ate less feed. IGS has recently started research into developing a DMI EPD. Typically, heritability estimates for DMI are moderate, indicating that genetic selection for the trait is possible. Of course, DMI on its own is not terribly significant without a corresponding indication of animals’ genetic potential as growth. Animals who eat very little may not necessarily be more efficient than animals who eat more if the big eaters also express excellent growth potential. So, the utility of the DMI EPD will be for use in an index where genetic potential for growth and feed consumption can be properly weighted with appropriate economic weights.
It is important for Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle to be represented in this early research so the cattle can be most accurately characterized in the estimation of genomic marker effects and in the final EPD. Data needed includes: • On test date • Off test date • On test weight • Mid test weight • Off test weight • Feed intake test and pen • DMI • ADG It is important that DMI be reported on a dry-matter basis. If you are interested in contributing data or have questions, please contact that NALF office. Or, data can be sent directly to tonya@nalf.org.

JUNIOR SCENE We Survived 2020...Let’s Thrive in 2021! by Faith Spriggs, NALJA Director
I
hope everyone is healthy and safe. I don’t know about the weather in your area, but staying true to the phrase “if you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it will change” is yet again accurate! We have had really warm temperatures in the upper 60s with thunderstorms and tornadoes and the next day it is freezing cold with snow. Crazy as always! 2020 was certainly not a year we will forget and the year I am sure we would all like to redo. I never envisioned my senior year in high school being so complicated. Living life around COVID has become the new normal for all of us. I am still not used to the pesky mask but will not get discouraged by them. As it is just a small thing. Cattlemen’s Congress was a great show! It was great seeing everyone In Oklahoma City. Welcoming new members to the Limousin family
is special. We had a record-breaking year with Genetics On Ice, as well as the Corner Post raffle. The Limousin family just keeps on amazing me more and more every year. We have overcome many challenges and as a Limousin family, we have risen to the challenge each time. Thanks to all of you for making it unforgettable! With 2020 in the rearview mirror, we look forward with hope that 2021 will bring forth a new exciting vision for all of us. “We are not promised tomorrow so let us seize every moment, every opportunity afforded to us today with no regrets.” We won’t and don’t remember the exact days...we remember the moment! Go out and make your moments and SHINE BRIGHT!
