Thirty years ago. the Oll<..'e rural toy, n of Gaffncy and small, female Limestone College wa, not prepared for y,hat would change the e. sence of i~ community and campus. A boy with dreams and inspiration b<x.<lIl1C a man that would upen:ede his Impeccable reputation around Limc tone's campus. Everyone knows or ha~ heard of "Dr. Tom;" however many do not know the journey he took from the big 'tate of ew York to the small. southern town of Gaffney. As a small boy. Thomas Thomson looked up to the ba.~ball legend, Mickey Mantle. He reminisoes about the particular game when MantJe hit the ball almost out of Yankee Stadium. "The tadiurn went crazy." remembers Dr. Tom. Hoy, ever, .'\1antJe y,as only Ie 01 Dr. Tom's idols. Evolving into a man. Dr. Tom attended the University of VIrginia, and with the help and inspiration of a professor. he was encouraged to get his mit ter's and doctorate in Rus,ian and Soviet history at Duke University. While studying Soviet hi,tory, Dr. Tom wa~ Inspired to become a teacher. The year 197 1 brought an interview that would change live, and the town of Gaffney forever. Dr. Tom was hired at Lime,tone College, and he began to pursue his dreams of teaching. "At that time. Limestone was changing with the rest of the world," he explains. "the school was becOming co-ed and it was also becoming racially integrated." The athletic program~ were non-exi~tent, and the day-student enrollment population was approximately 750 ,>tudent'>. He is not reluctant to admit that the College ha, undergone some drastic changes since he fIrst graced the campus with his presence. Dr. Tom revealed that one of his greatest awards and recognition ever received was being named Profe sor of History in the 1980-. However, unapparent to most students, Dr. Tom is very active in the community and organizations off-campus. He is a proud member of the Appalachian Trail Council, having hiked fiJ7 112 miles of the historically famous Appalachian Trail. He has also been president of the Rotary Club and an elder at a local church. Actively Involved in Kiwanis, Dr. Tom was the club's President in 1989. Last year, Dr. Tom participated in the 8th Annual Literacy Association Spelling Bee. He and his team brought home the winning trophy after pelling the word "sousaphone." Although Dr. Tom is very busy and involved off-campus, he is very focused and eager to teach. When a~ked about how he knew he was supposed to be a teacher, he began to tell about past student;,. He chuckled and said, "It's very cool when I teach the children of the students I taught in the 70s'" But the biggest thrill for Dr. Tom is for students, who later in life explain to hi m how he inspired them to teach and reach for their goals. In that sense, Dr. Tom has become just like the Soviet history professor that pushed him to reach his dreams. Any student that has had the privilege to be a part of Dr. Tom 's classe~ knows that by the end of the semester he or she will take something away from the class. WhetlJer it is learning historic fac~ or discovering one~lf, Dr. Tom's classes are everything but a waste. Through he has a reputation for being one of he toughe~t professors on campus, he sparks tIJe bonfire of thought in each and every student that walks through his classroom door. Dr. Tom is the energy that pumps through the heart of Limestone College. Without him, the life and ember of tIJe campus and his students may not reach their full potential. Thanks to Dr. Tom, many of tIJe students at Lime tone will be touched and will one day refer to him as their motivation. The Limestone College yearbook, The Cal did, was first published in 1904, with Eunice Temple Ford of that class serving as Editor-in-Chief. The derivation of the name is connected with limestone (Latin calx, calds), which was a natural choice for a college that was established with the financial base, as well as the physical base, of a large deposit of the mineral limestone. The -id is a suffix occurring in English derivatives of modern Latin names and denotes a noun pertaining to the Latin name, hence CaIciid.

Comm unity Chorus The Community Chorus is a group of vocalists from the campus and the community, including six Limestone College students. Participating students are Trisha Boyett, Jay Henderson, Phillip Martin, Troy McDowell, Jr., Sheldon Miller and TJ. Tyler. Dr. Scott Berry also participates. Under the directorship of Dr. Gena Poovey, the chorus per formed during Christmas on Campus (at right). The chorus also performed the Easter portion of Handel's Messiah In the spring.

Alpha Chi Honor Society Members of Limestone's chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor Society this year were Jennifer Brenner, Lacey Clark. Iva Naydenova, Elizabeth Oliver, April Price, Alenia Scism, Christina Smith, Jennifer Weaver, Ann Whiteside and Kerrie Williams. Limestone College students who are continumg members of Alpha Chi are TIlesa Earls Hamm, Kermin Henry and Lisa Putnam. Naydenova is pictured at right. Dr. Anne Lockwood is the faculty advisor. Alpha Chi is a coeducational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college students, and to honor those students who achieve such distinction.

Winter, summer, spring and fall, we have defimtely been through them all. We entered into thIS new year With the trees filled with different opportunities. We came In knowing what we wanted to make out of thls year and watched as our goals fell into place as wmter rolled around. The bad weather that we encountered tned to hinder our progress, but we put on our snow boots and trampled through. Spring brought about new adventures as the trees began to blossom, preparing us for the end of yet another year, allowing our mmds to retire as the summer settled m. Sigh of relief! We made it once again. We can tuck another year under our belts.
