Senior Class Dedication: Four short years ago in the fall of nineteen ninety-four, Limestone College received one ofthe greatest additions to its faculty; Dr. Karen Gainey had arrived. The college not only gained an extremely intelligent English professor but a dedicated professional, an outstanding colleague, and a friend to one and all.

In her first year, Dr. Gainey became faculty advisor of the Calciid, Candelabra, and the Lantern. She took all three of these publications to their fullest potential and beyond. In her second year, Dr. Gainey created the Writing Lab. The Writing Lab was a place where students could receive help with papers, speeches, and other various writing assignments. The Writing Lab has been in operation for three years and continues to be very successful. This past year, Dr. Gainey has served as chairperson of the Division of Arts and Letters.

It has been and continues to be a privilege to know this wonderful woman. Dr. Gainey

not only teaches in her classes, but she also educates through examples from her everyday life. With her warm smile, consistent attitude, and everlasting dedication, Dr. Karen Gainey is easily recognizable as the "epitome" of what it means to be a part of Limestone.

Golden Treasure of Limestone

New Pieces to the Puzzle

Dr. William H. Baker has been appointed Vice President for Instutional Advancement at Limestone College. Baker officially joined the Limestone administration July 7 and will guide the College's fundraising, alumni development, and public relations efforts. Since 1986, Baker served as Director of Institutional Advancement and Government Relations at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida. At Seminole, he helped build a million dollar scholarship endowment fund, secured major gifts from corporations and individuals and created the institution's first endowed professorships. We are very grateful to have Dr. Baker here at Limestone.

Dr. Maura Gage is an Assistant Professor of English at Limestone. She received her B.A. in English from California State University of Pennsylvania in '84, her M.A. in English from Colorado State University in '87, and her Ph.D. in English from the University of South Florida in May, '97. Her dissertation was on the work of the poet Gary Snyder. She has taught at Colorado State U niversity, Pasco-Hernando Community College, the University of South Florida, and Hillsborough Community College. Her poems have appeared in Nostoc, Bogg, Image, and Angeljlesh. Her chapbooks include Jackets,(Krax, '91), Spunfrom the Gold in David 's Hair,(Alpha Beat, '94), On Edges: Country Visons Between Skyscrapers and Corner Dives, (Olive Branch, '96), Splintering Images and Dividing L ines (Olive Branch, '97).

Dr. Robert Funk is an Adjunct Professor of English at Limestone. He received his Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of South Florida in 1987, his Master's Degree in 1991, and his Doctoral Degree in 1997. He has taught at the University of South Florida and at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. Dr. Funk has published articles on a variety of subjects, including Theodore Dreiser, Christopher Marlowe, and John H. MacDonald. He has presented numerous papers at regional and national conferences. His dissertation subject was the poetry of Robert Browning.

Dr. Ann Carver has been named Montague McMillian Professor of Humanities at Limestone College. Dr. Carver grew up in North Carolina and has been familiar with Limestone since she was a small child. Dr. Carver graduated from Limestone in 1962. She received her Master of Arts at the University of Arkansas in 1963 and her Ph.D. at Emory University in 1968. Teaching for the past twenty-one years at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Carver retired in 1990 as Professor Emertis. Returning to Limestone has been a wonderful experience for Dr. Carver. She has high hopes to revive the rich theater heritage Limestone once possessed.

Dr. Craig Kubias attended Ohio University in Athens, OH for his Bachelors of General Studies. Originally, he was a Physics maj or and then a Civil Engineering major before he decided to study Humanities. He obtained h is Masters of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Church, USA. He moved to Colorado, primarily for the skiing and hiking. Along the way, he earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from the University of Denver in Denver, CO. He had been teaching Religion and Philosophy classes at Denver area colleges before coming to Limestone College.

Midterm Madness On Thursday, October 16, the third annual Midterm Madness celebration took place on the front campus. It was a glorious celebration with students relishing the fact that half of the semester was already over! There were games, friends, food, and fun! The purpose of the event was to let students take a break and catch their breath before attacking the rest of the semester. A great time was had by all, and the celebration was a huge success.
