As a teacher, and equally important, as a friend, Andy Cox has dedicated h is professionallife to instructing his students to love, appreciate, and enjoy art. During his many years at Limestone, Mr. Cox has held many positions, most notably advisor, Academic Council member, committee member, and professor of art. Yet carefully and pleasantly combined in that professional respon sibility, he shines most as being a true friend of the student. H is charm, wit, and most pleasing personality is exemplified with his friendship, and to some, it has expanded to a father-like image. Current students find themselves asking him for personal advice, and graduates, too, often return for the same. If one questions his teaching methods, they may, but if an accurate and true answer of his teaching abilities is sought, seek one of his students - past or present. Mr. Cox arrived here at Limestone in 1967. He has seen many students come and go, all of the changes that h ave occurred, and has been a integral part of the Limestone College that many of us love today, and will certainly tomorrow. Andy Cox, you are one of t he best things that Limestone has going for it, and with that having been stated b y many students, colleagues, administrators and graduates, it is our pleasure, as editors and members of the Class of 1988, to dedicate the CALCIID to you this year. Excitement at Limestone can be everywhere. Whether it be during class, extra curricular activities, the dorms, or just with a friend, t he HRock" always has some unexpected excitement. Some of the most exciting times of our lives are spent at Limestone.

Many students have participated in the Adventure Program. Shelley Ivey swings across the "Nitro Crossing" during an orientation event.

One of Limestone's newest additions is the Kanto program. The Japanese girls are always the center of media attention. What is xenolith? According to WEBSTER'S NEW WORLD DICTIONARY, a xenolith is a rock different from in kind from that which it is embedded. Limestone College has been referred to as the H Rock" for many years and it is very different from most colleges. New students at Limestone find the college quite different from other colleges, but Limestone has its own charm.

Perfection at Limestone is setting and accomplishing goals. Athletes, music majors, art majors, business majors, or education majors all reach perfection in one way or the other. Students at Limestone strive for perfection through grades, sports, talents and as individuals. Perfection may not be reached in every way at Limestone, but you can't say we didn't try.

Class at Limestone can be expressed in almost everything we do. Gestures, smiles, expressions and dress are just a few of the classy ways Limestone students express themselves. Even when things are not going exactly as we expected, we learn to accept these things and strive for that certain "Rock" class. Switchboard operator, Shirley Seay shows her class even away from the switchboard.

During Opening Convocation Bill Dorman receives a service award from President Payne. Many other faculty members received this award also. As a part of Orientation. freshmen are enabled to express their class at a drop-in held at President Payne's home.

L.e. GOLF TEAM

The 1988-89 L.C. Golf team has two key players, Senior Steve Hoke of Lancaster, S.C., and Peter Broderick of Albany, N.Y. The Second year newcomer to the team is local produce Todd Robertson of Gaffney. A graduate of Gaffney Senior High School, Robertson was a member of the region championship team which peacked at the right time. Christian Bauer of Blairstown, N.J., a walk-on from last year, will lend needed depth and internal competition. Freshman Dave Coleman also from Lancaster, S.C. will also be that extra added touch the team will need. Limestone College Golf team should indeed become a contender again in the immediate future. Keep you eyes on this hard working team.

With a new coach and several new players, the Limestone soccer program has taken a turn for the better. The Saints played a grueling 20-game schedule and won a couple tough games and lost a few that could have gone either way. Limestone's final record for the season was 4-16, but many positive things took place. The Saints fielded a very young team this year, having only one senior. Some of the new players that made an immediate impact included a pair of freshman, both from New Jersey, Peter Dourdoulakis and Dan Shuren. Tad Conner, a junior college transfer who came to Limestone to play basketball, helped a great deal on defense. Sophomore Mickey Purdy put in a strong effort as back-up goal keeper after Russ Cambron, the starting keeper, was knocked out for the season with an injury. Palmer Brown, a rising senior, was tied for scoring honors with Dourdoulakis. Brown had to serve double duty on defense and at a mid-field position. Altogether the season was a success in the minds of the players. Next year should be even better. The care of the team is young and willing to dedicate themselves to improving the Saints! Coach Bennice has the coaching experience and recruiting skills to bring in new talent to supplement the players gained this season. With a little fund- raising, the Saints have hopes of going to Florida for a tournament next season and are looking at a few others here in South Carolina. Judging from the fun they had on the road trips this season, these tournaments should be exciting. By Parker Taie

WOMENS SOFTBALL

Each year, for the pa t four years, the Lady Saints softball team has won 31 or more games. With the loss of only 2 starters, Coach Dennis Bloomer feels that his recruiting for the 1989 season should give the Lady Saints another strong season.

BASEBALL

By Terry Anton nte Limestone College Baseball Team recently finished a suc-

cessful fall season of practice and scrimmage games in preparation for its second season of District 6 competition to begin in February. The Saints will take a few weeks off to strengthen and heal themselves before beginning practice again later this winter. Practice for Limestone took on a more intense outlook: with a focus on the fundamentals, an aspect of the game which haunted the Saints in their inaugural season. With a demanding physical workout and continual repetition of the basics, the Saints were able to tum in several consistent perfoonances along with showing vast improvement. This improvement is evidenced by the attitudes of the players. Sophomore relief-pitcher "Goose" Gagliardo said "We played together and worked together as a team instead of individuals, like last year." Gagliardo also stated that "returning players know what it takes to win at this level, and they need to help the

freshman adjust." Just how hard is the adjustment to college baseball? Freshman infielder Tony Walker- from Shelby, N.C., felt it was "tough adjusting from being an everyday player in high school to struggling for playing time as a newcomer." Junior pitcher Mark Ford, who hails from Hickory N.C., thought that an attitude adjustment was necessary for his transition to Pfieffer College where Ford began his college career. "I found it wasn'taseasy to gethiuers o u t and I had to adjust my attitudes to face the tougher competition." Ford said. The most promising improvement came from Limestone's coach and future hall of fame, Gaylord Perry. "Coach PelTy's year of experience showed this fall in his ability to instill confidence in his players, and be has showed us that he can handle this team and that he knows his baseball," said Gagliardo. Many players are also pleased with Coach Perry's more aggressive style of baseball this year.

"He has taught the team to always hustle and to never qui~" said F<rd. Many players feel that the Saints can improve on their somewhat disappointing season a year ago. Although Limestone finished at 17-21 many players felt :hat they lost too many games the)' should have won and feel that experience will be a key factor next year. Ford said. "Thy biggest change is in attitude because we have experienced upper-classman with leadership qualities that they can use. Last year there were no leaders to take charge." Although the team has shown improvemen~ they still have a tough road ahead. District 6 contains several powerhouse schools that have proven records and experienced players. The Saints know they will have to continue to work hard and work together. This fall season was just the first step. and it was a confidence builder. But just how much confidence did it build? Gagliardo summed it up best when he said. "Bottom line is we're gorma win'"

Volleyball Makes a Strong Comeback

Meg Vassyand Mandy Smith, but it has taught them how to fight back and become a stronger team. In the two-week absence of Coach Angie Dewart, the team relied 00 each other and found exactly what it takes to win. The team had four games left on the season before the district playoffs. Playing the way they were, my personal prediction is that the team will be the next District 6 champioos. And even if they are not the district champs. they will always be winnen to each other and to the people associated with dIem for such a sttong comeback.

Returning to Limestone Tennis program is senior Cameron MacLean of Nova Scotia, and Junior Phil French of Marlton, ~ N.J. Freshman Richard Helmly from Pendleton, S.C. and Jamie Bell of St. George, S.C. make up the remainder of the Limestone (Saints) Tennis Team. Traditionally, Limestone has had strong tennis teams. What is a sophomore? The Greek root s-o-p-h means wisdom. The econd-year student, the sophomore, becomes wiser as the days pass - he is maturing academically and emotionally. Whenever someone heard a new saying, everyone else picked it up and there was the new word of the week. Some jargon lasted only a couple of weeks; others have been around for years. Weather you speak your own special jargon or have your own unique language, everyone means the same thing. They just say it differently.

MAY COURT '89

May Day is a gala celebration held on a Saturday near the first of May. During the afternoon, a May Day production is presented in honor of the May Queen and her court. The Queen is elected by the student body and the runner-up is the Maid of Honor. The Court is composed of three elected representatives from each class. The day ends with a dance that night.
