Happy anniversary to usl This is volume seventy-one of the Calciid. and pictured on the following pages are the sixty issues that have been published. That's right. sixty. In some years . the Calciid was not published; in other years. the volumes were not numbered. When we began researching this special issue. we discovered the problem. But who are we to tamper with history? So. we the Calciid staff hope you e njoy the celebration of our 1983 Calciid as you take a look at our glorious past.

1906 Dr. Madison Sarratt. who became Vice-Chancellor of Vanderbilt University. was the fi rst man to earn a degree from limestone. Theodore Roosevelt won the Alfred B. Nobel Peace Prize. The Great San Francisco earthquake killed more than 500 people.

1904 The inaugura l issue of the Calciid was published.

1909 The "Gold Book" for recording the student-government attainments was established.

1907 College cost at limestone was $160 for one year. Thirty-one students graduated from the College.

1905 The Board of Trustees approved President Lodge's suggestion that a new building be erected to accommodate the music and art departments of the College. Albert Einste in revealed his Theory of Relativity and other theories of physics.

1908 The Alumnae Associa tion ra ised sufficient funds for the purchase of a pipe organ for t he Curtis Auditorium. The most popular song of the year was "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

Henry Ford revealed the Model T.

1910 Beautiful daisies. the College flower. covered the back campus.

1911 Frank l. Eyer, Director of Music at limestone, wrote the comic operetta "A Vision of limestone," containing " limestone. Cherished Limestone," which became the "Alma Mater."

Seventy-one Years of Recording History 1916 The C ollege celebrated the tercentenary of the death of Shakespeare with a two-day festival on the "May Day G rounds," back of the main campus . Wood row Wilson was re-elected President of the U.S.

1917

1912 Dixie lodge was completed.

A library fee for students was established.

A school of Pedagogy, the precursor of the Education program, was added to the curriculum.

The United States declared war on Germany.

1913 President Wilson pressed an electric button in the White House, blowing up the Gamboa Dike and creating the Panama Canal.

1914 Domestic Science made its first appearance in the limestone curriculum.

Ratification of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution outlawed liquor for all U.S. citizens.

One of the nation's first "wireless" receivers was insta lle d at the College. The lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington. D.C.. before a crowd of IOO.cxx) people. The tomb of Egyp t ian King Tutanknhamen was discovered.

1925 The Hamrick Hall of Science, the Carroll School of Fine Arts, and the President's home were completed. The proposal of the South Carolina Baptist Convention to reduce limestone College to a junior college was rejected.

1920 Professional baseball was rocked by the Black Sox scandal; eight Chicago White Sox players were indicted for throwing the 1919 World Series.

The limestone College fountain. honoring President lodge. was constructed.

Dr. lee Davis lodge died; Dr. R.C. Granberry succeeded as President.

limestone College was accepted into the fold of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

Mrs. Susan Margaret W erts Eyer, Professor of English, was officially appointed the first College librarian.

1924 The catalogue first c arried the outline of work required for a Bachelor of Science Degree, a Bachelor of Arts Degree. and a Bachelor of Music Degree.

Seventy-One Years Of Recordi ng History 1926 A lyceum fee of four dollars was added to the student's expenses to guarantee five "Artists' Nights" during the year. The first woman to swim the English Channel was nineteen-year-old Gertrude Ederle of New York; her time was fourteen hours and thirty-one minutes.

Limestone College became a full member with Class A rating in the Southern Association of Colleges.

Male " co-eds" joined in the old College song, ''I'd Rather Be a Limestone Girl."

President Griffith died.

The p lanet Pluto was identified from a photograph made at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Arizona.

1927 The Granberry Gymnasium was built. The College library moved from a suite in the Curtis Administration Building to three rooms on the second floor of Hamrick.

1929 A Pre-Medical course was in troduced into the Limestone curriculum. The Stock Market crashed.

1931 The fi rs t Limestone College summer school session was held. Herber t Hoover signed the act making "The Star-Spangled Banner" our National Anthem.

Eunice Ford Hall was built. Additional space wa built into the open court between the two wings of the Hamrick Hall of Science for use as a library.

1938 The .Y. Y nkees was the first baseball team to win three world series in succession.

1937 An experimental Child ren's School was operated on the ground floor of Winnie Davis. A major in Commerce was added. Twelve states were represented in the enrollment of the College.

An oral comprehensive examination was held of each candidate for a degree. Griffith Apartments, a faculty apartment house, was erected. F.D.R. became the first President to appear on television. as he opened the World's Fair in New York.

1940 The Kate Montgomery Library was completed.

Gasoline rationing-three gallons a week-went into effect.

Act Num ber 578 of the General Assembly o f the State of South Carolina was passed and signed by the Governor on April 14. incorporating limestone College.

Nylons were placed on public sale throughout the country. In New York. the 72.~pair allotment was sold in eight hours with a limit of two pairs to a customer.

1943 The catalog for this year was the last to list the Winnie Davis School of History as a separate school.

1941

F.D. Roosevelt was the first U.S. President to fly in an airplane while in office.

1945 The Cen tennial of limestone College was celeb rated.

Ebert Dormitory was built. At the request of the College. the State Baptist Convention released all associations binding it to Limestone.

1946 The firs t electronic computer was complete d in Philadelphia.

The College gained admittance to the International Association of Schools of Music.

President Granberry announced his retirement.

1949 Eugene McPherson wa s the first bicycle rider to cross t he continent in less than three weeks.

The Reverend O. Norman Shands became President of limestone College.

The honor society Kalosophia. eventually to become Alpha Chi. was founded.

Tuition was $885 a year.

The Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ was insta lled in the Curtis Auditorium and later (1964) moved to Fullerton. Columbia Records introduced the BY3 r.p.m. long-playing record.

1955 Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" was a major factor in stimulating the popularity of rock-'n-roll.

1958 The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was authorized.

Elvis Presley's songs "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel" were the hit songs of the year.

Alaska was proclaimed the fortyninth state, and the Hawaii statehood bill was signed.

1961 All new limestone College students were required to take the College Entrance Examination Boards tests in English a nd mathematics.

1962 John Gle nn orbited the earth.

1963 The nation was stunned by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

1967

1965 President Johnson signed the law requiring cigarette packages and ads to be printed with health warnings.

Dr. Mc Collister was named President. The "Evening College" was begun. The College signed "Form No. 441. the Assurance of Compliance with the Department of Health. Education. and Welfare. under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

1964 Fullerton Auditorium was completed. An English Rock group. The Beatles. became so popular that the media coined the term "Beatlemania."

1966 President Eastwood died edly of a heart attack.

1968 Dr. S. Wallace Taylor was named Dean and Registrar. A new dorm. which eventually beca me the New Men's Dorm. was completed. A post-professional program for reg istered nurses was included in the academic offerings.

1969 Dr. John Hamilton served as Acting President for one year. after Dr. Mc Collister's resignation. Dr. Ivie L Smith. Associate Professor of Chemistry. developed the electroluminescent zinc sulfide phosphor which was used in lighting panels of the Apollo II spacecraft lunar excursion module.

1971 The Agnew-Thompson Observa tory was constructed. The Twenty-sixth Amendment. giving eighteen-year-olds the r ight to vote. took effect.

1973-1974 Presiden t Bell resigned to become Presiden t of Erskine College. Dr. Jack Early was named President of Limes tone College. The fir st official intercollegiate athletic p rogram was established. Hank Aa ron hit his 715th homerun. breakin g Babe Ruth's 47-year-old record. Streaking hit America. especially on college ca mpuses.

1972 Children went crazy o ver skateboards. and adults over jogg ing.

1970 Melvin Stanyarne Bell became President of Limestone College. For the first time. dorm space was provided for men wanting to reside on campus. The first floor of Dixie lodge was converted into infirmary quarters.

1975 The Ca mp-Swofford Chapel was completed. Stephenso n Dining Hall was built.

The Timken Physical Education Building was completed.

Americans were held hostage in Iran.

The Outdoor phase of the Timken l YFE Center was completed.

The United States bo ycotted the Summer Olympics.

Ground was broken for the second phase of the Timken l YFE Center. The Women's Education and Career Advancement Program was instituted.

1978 Disco music, followed by Punk rock, became popular.

1981 Sandra O'Connor became the first woman to be placed on the Supreme Court.

The limestone College Wind Ensemble participated in an exchange tour in Belgium. May 23-June 3. 1982. The concert tour included visits to Antwerp. Brussells. Bruges. Zeebrugge. Gerardsbergen. and Oudenaarde-cities that have nurtured musicians and painters since the Renaissance. The limestone group stayed in homes of students and patrons in Brakel and Horebeke. A music group composed of members of the Fanfare "St. Cecelia" and the Harmonie "Die Endracht" from Brakel and Horebeke will visit Gaffney in July 1983.

CHERI TERRAPIN (Senior): "The meaning of life is love. The purpose of life is to love. The fullness of life is from knowing love. The need of life is to be loved." Since her freshman year at limestone, Cheri has participated in pageants, sports, and student government. Her outgoing personality helped her capture the Miss Congeniality award in 1981. She helped build school spirit during the volleyball and softball seasons. BROADWAY PLAYWRIGHT ATTENDS DARK OF THE MOON "One of the best productions of my play that I've ever seen. Southerners do seem to do it best." So said Dr. Howard Richardson. a native of Spartanburg. South Carolina. the co-author of the Broadway hit. as he viewed the limestone production November 4-6. When a tape from the play was shown on Carolina Noon (Channel 7 television). Mrs. Carolyn Duell. the director. remarked that she was pleased to have the large cast made up of students representing almost every department.

Bump Dive The Lady Saints Volleyball Team ended the 198J season with a record of J3 wins a nd 9 losses. The team was ranked seventh in the NAIA District VI playoffs, in which only the top 8 of 22 college teams are picked to participate. Although the ladies lost in the playoffs, the squad is in excellent shape for the 1983 season and is assured of being a contender for the D istr ict VI title that it won in 1981.
