TIME TO FOCUS Dear Friend of the Foundation, This year has been one that the Lima community, and the world, will not soon forget. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we all interact. It has also brought heightened attention to the expertise, compassion and courage of Lima Memorialâ€™s frontline healthcare workers in providing outstanding care to our community, no matter the circumstances. In the midst of a global pandemic, our community chose to invest in local health care to bring significant advancements to our region. In this edition of Focus, I am pleased to share highlights of the great work of our Foundation, fueled by our donor community. Because of the tremendous generosity of Foundation friends like you, the new, state-of-the-art Inpatient Rehabilitation Center opened for the first patients in November. Gifts to the area of greatest need provided for two additional Tru-D disinfecting robots. And our community united around our funding priority to raise more than $750,000 in support of oncology advancements. Patients will benefit from advanced resources and technology that detect and diagnose cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. Your unwavering support is literally saving lives. GERM-KILLING ROBOTS ADDED TO OUR FLEET DONOR DOLLARS IN ACTION

When the communityâ€™s safety was in question, our Foundation acted swiftly to purchase two additional Tru-D disinfecting robots to provide maximum protection for our patients and associates, all thanks to past gifts to the area of greatest need. Gifts like these allow Lima Memorial the flexibility to respond quickly to critical needs as they may arise. With our dedicated Environmental Services team at the helm, our four Tru-D disinfecting robots are working around the clock to destroy 99.9% of all germs. Community members can take pride in knowing the far-reaching impact their support is having on the health and safety of our patients and associates.

MALHOTRA ENDOWMENT TO BENEFIT AT-RISK WOMEN & CHILDREN The Lima Memorial Foundation is grateful to be entrusted with the newly established Varsha & Praveen K. Malhotra, MD, Women & Children’s Healthcare Endowment. The $250,000 endowment was created to break down barriers, provide support and advocate for women and children who are in need, underserved or afflicted. Given the Malhotra’s longstanding relationship with Lima Memorial, they turned to our Foundation to safeguard and appropriately fulfill their charitable intent. Meet the Malhotras Dr. Malhotra began his career at Lima Memorial in 1978 as an interventional radiologist and held various leadership positions throughout his tenure at the hospital. Varsha joined the Lima Memorial Auxiliary in 2002 and has provided hundreds of volunteer service hours. In 2005, Dr. Malhotra opened the Vein Care Center, where he worked until his retirement in 2014. Throughout the years, the Malhotras remained actively involved with Lima Memorial. Dr. Malhotra is currently a member of both the Lima Memorial Health System and Lima Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, and Varsha remains a member of the LMH Auxiliary. They both proudly serve as Foundation Ambassadors.

What inspired you to create an endowment to benefit women and children? Whether abroad or in the U.S., it is hard to ignore the fact that women and children continue to be the most vulnerable among us. Because of structural inequalities and harmful social attitudes, women and children, especially the poor and those of color, often don’t have a voice in their communities. They are almost always the first to suffer from society’s failure to protect them and provide essential services, particularly health care. This gift is a small step in fulfilling our desire to help the most vulnerable women and children in our community. We hope this will help draw much-needed attention to the healthcare crisis and encourage other members of the Lima and Allen County community to join us in working for a better and more just system where barriers can be removed.

Why did you choose the Lima Memorial Foundation to be the steward of your gift? We came to Lima as immigrants from India. The Lima Memorial family welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like real and valued members of the community. We raised our family here and made lifelong friendships. We feel a responsibility toward our community. Giving back like this is the least we can do. Being associated with Lima Memorial for many years, we have become familiar with its Foundation and the great philanthropic work they do. We have full confidence they will fulfill our goals.

BRINGING A NEW LEVEL OF REHABILITATIVE CARE TO OUR REGION

Transforming SPACES Transforming LIVES

Our Foundation united with the community to raise $2.5 million to completely transform the way inpatient rehabilitation is delivered for our region. In November, we welcomed the first of many patients into the newly transformed center.

It’s been remarkable to see the team’s vision come to life. Physicians, therapists, nurses and former patients and their families provided valuable input to create this state-of-the-art center for our region. Features within the family-centered, community-based environment include home-like patient rooms, a therapy gymnasium, salon, community dining center, family room, kitchen and garage, complete with a car transfer simulator. We are profoundly grateful to our community for supporting this new level of care, ensuring patients from in and around our region will have local access to the highest quality of rehabilitative care during a most vulnerable time in their life. The activity hub of the center is a therapy gymnasium, which is fully equipped with a wide range of innovative technology unique to the region, including a ZeroG® Gait and Balance System, designed to help patients take their new first step sooner.

YOUNG ARTIST BRINGS COMMUNITY TO INPATIENT REHABILITATION CENTER Where Art and Therapy Unite Lima Memorial united art and therapy in its new Inpatient Rehabilitation Center through the work of Ethan Jordan, an aspiring, young artist and Lima resident. Ethan’s work is bringing the community to patients undergoing intense therapy to regain their independence. The subjects of Ethan’s art are 17 familiar buildings, landmarks and scenes from around the Lima region, each chosen to evoke a sense of community and remind patients of their end goal – a return home. Earlier this year, Ethan came to Lima Memorial to paint one of his masterpieces. Patients undergoing inpatient therapy had the opportunity to watch a community piece come alive. DONOR IMPACT

ONCOLOGY ADVANCEMENTS CANCER CAN’T HIDE. WE WON’T LET IT. Every cancer journey starts with an image. Whether a nodule is found through testing or incidentally, having the clearest image possible is vital. Early studies are showing new rates of discovering cancer have dropped as our nation paused and important screenings were postponed. This, unfortunately, leads to a secondary crisis of a delayed diagnosis of cancer. The devastating impact will go on long after the coronavirus pandemic tempers down. Our Lima Memorial Foundation was determined to make a positive impact.

Earlier this year, our Foundation embarked on a mission to elevate our fight against the top cancers impacting our region – breast, colorectal, lung and prostate. We pledged to unite our community to bring advanced resources and the latest in imaging and diagnostic technology to our region. The community came through and helped us exceed our $750,000 goal.

SUSAN ALTHAUSER Susan was alarmed when doctors discovered a nodule on her lung in January of 2020 during an unrelated visit to the Emergency Center. Subsequent biopsy results showed she had what she feared — lung cancer. But Lima Memorial Pulmonologist Jason Stienecker, DO, was optimistic about Susan’s prognosis. Why? Because the nodule had been discovered early. Within a very short time, Susan underwent surgery to remove the nodule. Now, she is completely cancer free. Just months after her life-altering diagnosis, her life is back to normal. “I know I had the best outcome,” Susan shared. “I think about other people who don’t even have a chance because it wasn’t detected early enough.” Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women. More than half of those diagnosed with lung cancer will die within one year because they will be diagnosed in a later, often untreatable stage. Because of donors like you, we are investing in advanced resources and technology to detect and diagnose cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. For patients like Susan, that literally means lives will be saved.

OUR FIGHT AGAINST LUNG CANCER Our fight against lung cancer made a giant leap forward in 2016. Thanks to community support, our Foundation brought the most sophisticated lung cancer diagnostic capabilities to our region with the purchase of the superDimension™ Navigation System and endobronchial ultrasound technology to locate cancer in often difficult to reach locations. Just three years later, you can see how this investment is literally saving lives.

ADVANCING THE FIGHT AGAINST LUNG CANCER Because of donors like you, Lima Memorial will build upon its established Care Continuum Center of Excellence for Lung Cancer. As technology continues to rapidly evolve, significant advancements have been made in diagnostic capabilities for lung abnormalities. We will introduce state-of-the-art cone beam CT technology, enabling our physicians to precisely access the most challenging tumor locations. Equally significant, many lung nodules are found incidentally, or coincidentally, during imaging studies conducted to evaluate another concern. Current statistics show only 30% of incidental findings receive appropriate follow up. Thanks to community support, we will invest in an innovative system to reliably identify and ensure follow up for all incidental findings, including lung nodules. This will enable physicians to systematically track and evaluate nodules to detect any changes that may suggest cancer. FOUNDATION FUNDING PRIORITY

Quality of imaging is very important for what I do as a radiologist. Enhancing the images to the maximum amount allows us to detect cancer in its earlier stage. It was important for me to financially invest in this project to bring the most advanced imaging to our patients in Lima and the surrounding area.

PINPOINTING PROSTATE CANCER Approximately one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, and 1 in 41 will die. Diagnosing prostate cancer early allows for more treatment options and will ultimately save lives. Because of your help, we will expand diagnostic capabilities for prostate cancer by adding advanced surface coil technology to our new next-generation MRI. The sophistication of this technology provides our physicians with sharper images, allowing for improved detection and localization rates. This pinpointing of true prostate cancer will also reduce the frequency of unnecessary prostate biopsies. We will change the trajectory of prostate cancer and safely diagnosis it in its earliest stage â€“ saving lives.

STOPPING COLORECTAL CANCER IN ITS TRACKS Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and in women. An early, accurate diagnosis provides the best opportunity to turn these statistics around and save lives. Thanks to outstanding community support, we will introduce sophisticated surface coil technology to supplement our new next-generation MRI. This technology will provide infinite clarity to enable Lima Memorial physicians to best diagnose and stage colorectal cancer. What this means for patients is an individualized treatment plan that provides the best chance to stop cancer in its tracks, dramatically impacting our fight against colorectal cancer in our community.

INCREASING ACCESS TO BREAST CARE Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. In fact, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

GEOGRAPHY SHOULD NOT DETERMINE A LIFE SAVED. Studies show women living in rural areas are screened for breast cancer less often than women living in urban areas. Even more, rural areas report higher breast cancer death rates. Differences in cancer death rates are, in part, related to disparities in access to lifesaving breast cancer screening services. 3D mammography is the gold standard for breast imaging and has been clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancer. Thanks to community support, we will establish advanced 3D mammography services in a rural community to remove a critical barrier to care. Early screenings and diagnostics can lead to improved treatment, better outcomes and ultimately lives saved.

The Lima Memorial Foundation Journey gala has become a premier event for our region. And while COVID-19 impacted our ability to unite together for an event, it didn’t impact our ability to unite together for a cause. This year, we invited guests to experience A Journey Like No Other as we took on the top cancers impacting our region – breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancer.

Where Art and Therapy Unite The Lima Memorial Foundation began its Journey at ArtSpace/Lima, presenting the Where Art and Therapy Unite collection by local artist Ethan Jordan. Prints of Ethan’s exquisite oil paintings of familiar buildings and landmarks adorn our new, state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation center. These masterpieces were created to inspire, motivate and bring comfort to our patients who are undergoing intense therapy within the center. The original oil paintings launched the annual Journey auction.

Silent Auction Soars to Success More than 300 individuals participated in the much-anticipated Lima Memorial Foundation Journey silent auction. Bidding was competitive on the more than 70 items and 17 paintings. The auction raised more than $58,000 to support oncology advancements.

Lima Memorial Foundation Unites Community to Create Interactive Mural Cancer survivors, their families, caregivers and community champions painted messages of hope, inspiration and remembrance on an interactive Journey Mural. These sentiments will be forever embedded in the mural as layers of paint covered them to create a public message of hope and encouragement. The Journey Mural is adorned on the brick building just north of Lima Memorialâ€™s Medical Park, 525 N. Eastown Road. It has become a destination for our community and passersby to stop, reflect and capture that dayâ€™s Journey.

A Voice for Putnam County An Ambassador for Lima Memorial From an early age, Jan von der Embse learned from her parents what it means to be generous. Her parents worked selflessly and tirelessly to raise nine children and make ends meet. Yet, they always had something to give others, an example that Jan has followed. A lifelong Putnam County resident, Jan was looking for a way to share her time, talent and treasure with an organization that would care about the residents of Putnam County. She found that match with the Lima Memorial Foundation. Why did you choose to become involved with the Lima Memorial Foundation? When I met with the Foundation team, I felt the energy and desire to bring good things into our community through philanthropy. I was impressed with Lima Memorial Hospital, the doctors, nurses and volunteers! I learned so much about what they had to offer, and I wanted to spread that information throughout our community. It is incredible to be part of uniting individuals to advance health care in our region. What does quality local health care mean to you? Quality health care is unbelievably important to me and I’m sure most people. It is vital to have someone and someplace you can trust and feel comfortable with. I believe Lima Memorial offers those qualities to all of us. My husband, Dan, and I had the opportunity to go on a tour of the hospital and speak with the doctors personally. It was easy to see their commitment to the hospital and health care, in general. But their commitment to the community was also evident. When you hear Lima Memorial is the “Lima hospital,” it is true. Lima Memorial makes the decisions for the individuals it serves.

Dan and Jan von der Embse What does being an Ambassador mean to you? An Ambassador, to me, is someone who is connected to a wonderful institution and excited to let everyone know about it. When someone asks me about health care, I talk about Lima Memorial Health System, and I always use the word “family” to describe the organization. I feel confident and comfortable referring family and friends to Lima Memorial because I know from personal experience they are going to be treated like family. That is so important when going through a vulnerable time. I am also quick to suggest a career with Lima Memorial because I know their employees are well cared for. Even more, I feel compelled to share the great work of the Lima Memorial Foundation. It has been the best investment of my time and treasure. I have seen firsthand the impact of gifts they have received. I’m grateful to know the most advanced technology and expert team are here for me, my family and our area, if needed.

THE WALSH FAMILY Quality local health care and family relationships – for Lima residents Jared and Shonda Walsh, these are synonymous with Lima Memorial.

Jared’s relationship with Lima Memorial literally began on day one of his life. And, when it was time for Jared and Shonda to begin their family, they placed their trust in Lima Memorial. “At the times when we’ve needed care, the entire medical team at Lima Memorial has always taken great care of us,” stated Shonda. “They truly treat us like we are a part of their family.” Generosity is a guiding principle for Jared and Shonda and is in the Walsh’s blood. Jared’s grandfather was a volunteer with the Lima Memorial Auxiliary for many years, and to this day, Jared’s father volunteers his time at the hospital. “Shonda and I believe in giving to organizations that we know will have a positive impact on our local community,” shared Jared. It was this valued principle that guided the Walshs to make annual financial contributions to the Lima Memorial Foundation. “We are grateful for the great care we’ve always received at Lima Memorial and wanted to give back,” shared Shonda. This conviction has been handed down to their three children, Jackson, Tatum and Kendall. When Shonda’s aunt, an avid seamstress, passed away, she left a large supply of material. In April, knowing of the dire need for cloth masks, 14-year-old Tatum wanted to help and began sewing. In true Walsh fashion, the whole family stepped in. In all, the family made 1,500 masks for healthcare workers.

ALAN & LINDA BURKHALTER Lima residents Alan and Linda Burkhalter are comforted knowing that quality health care is so close to home. When Linda’s ailing parents were in need of health care, traveling outside of the community was not only going to be a burden on her parents but a concern and stress on the family. Upon evaluating options, she was reassured to know her parents would be able to receive the quality care they needed at Lima Memorial. Last year, the couple had the opportunity to attend an Insight event hosted by the Lima Memorial Foundation. Along with having a candid conversation with Lima Memorial’s President and CEO Mike Swick, Alan and Linda observed a robotic surgery, learned about new diagnostic lung cancer technology and interacted with the hospital’s simulation mannequins in the education laboratory. The experience reaffirmed to the Burkhalters that Lima Memorial truly offers the very best care to our community from advanced technology to expert physicians. “I continue to be amazed with Lima Memorial’s technology and their ability to recruit the very best doctors,” stated Alan.

The Burkhalters live by the rule, “It pays to pay attention.” In early 2020 when both Alan and Linda had retired, they were ready to begin the traveling they had long been waiting for. New pandemic precautions caused them to change their plans. As was their nature, they paid close attention to the impact COVID-19 was not only having on the community now, but the predicted impact it would have down the road. They felt a desire to help. “We’ve both worked since we were 13 to create a good life for ourselves and our family,” Linda shared. “We are in a place in our lives where we can and want to share with others.” Alan and Linda chose to support the Lima Memorial Foundation. We are grateful to all of our friends, like the Burkhalters, who choose to make the health of our community a priority.

MEREDITH LEGACY WE ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT THE LIMA MEMORIAL FOUNDATION. WE TRUST THEY ARE DOING EXACTLY WHAT IS NEEDED TO HELP PATIENTS AND THE COMMUNITY. JIM AND JAN MEREDITH

The dictionary defines philanthropy as the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. We, on the other hand, look to Jim and Jan Meredith to define philanthropy. Married for more than 65 years, these newlyweds have a lot in common, including their love for Lima Memorial. Their history with us dates back decades. Jan’s earliest memory is of her Girl Scout troop coming to Lima Memorial to help package sanitary items for patients. This young girl dreamed of becoming a nurse and ultimately fulfilled that dream when she graduated from the Lima Memorial School of Nursing in 1953. Jim’s roots tie back even earlier to his birth. In his adult years, Jim’s law firm represented the hospital. And when the hospital determined the need to establish a foundation, Jim helped lead the charge and became a founding board member. His decision came from a sheer desire to make sure his community has access to the very best health care. Still today, Jim proudly serves on the Lima Memorial Foundation Board of Directors.

We often hear the secret to happiness is in serving others. Just spend a little time with Jim and Jan, and you will quickly find this to be true. “We were each raised to be of service to our community and help those who need it most,” Jan stated. “It is important to us to give back to the community where we have lived and worked our whole lives,” Jim commented. “Without this community, where would we be?” As the Lima community has been a beneficiary of Jim and Jan’s tremendous support, they have planned for their legacy to continue well into the future. The couple made the thoughtful decision to establish a planned gift to advance the mission of the Lima Memorial Foundation beyond their lifetime. They join a very special community of planned giving for Lima Memorial, called the Heritage Society.

Each year, Lima Memorial associates come together to support Living the Spirit, an associate-driven campaign focused on supporting one another and the health of our community through gifts to the Foundation.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted associates at Lima Memorial in varying ways and presented many challenges and unforeseen needs. The enthusiasm and desire to move forward with the Living the Spirit campaign speaks to the kindness and caring spirit within the walls of Lima Memorial. And, while Living the Spirit helps Lima Memorialâ€™s patients, programs and services, it also allows associates to lift each other up in times of need through the Associate Relief Fund.

Sue Simpson, RN, was faced with a cancer diagnosis and brain aneurysm at the same time. The support from her fellow co-workers through the Associate Relief Fund meant so much to her. She was very touched to be thought of and cared for by her Lima Memorial family.

Ben Krouskop, RN, was grateful for the unexpected kindness his colleagues showed by referring him to the Associate Relief Fund after learning his daughter was diagnosed with a rare seizure disorder requiring him to spend unforeseen time away from work to care for his family.

We were just very grateful that my colleagues thought about us. They are like a second family to me.

More than $320,000 was pledged by our Lima Memorial Associates. For June Arnold, Surgical Technician, the sense of family and belonging she feels was solidified when her co-workers referred her to the Associate Relief Fund after her house was heavily damaged by an F3 tornado.

A MESSAGE FROM MIKE Dear Friends, Just three months into the year, our community, along with the nation, paused. Our attention turned to fighting an invisible, largely unknown enemy, COVID-19. As a health system, we established the best team and resources to care for patients impacted by COVID-19, while also protecting and treating patients who were presenting with heart attacks, strokes and other emergent conditions. I am proud of our entire healthcare team who is sacrificing and working tirelessly to face the pandemic and care for our community. Overwhelmingly, the community is also stepping forward to support our Healthcare Heroes by providing items, such as handmade face masks, personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies, meals and much-needed encouragement.

However, this report cannot be all about COVID-19. In our constant striving for excellence in care and service, there is much to celebrate from 2020. Our new Outpatient Diagnostic and Imaging Center opened, featuring a next-generation MRI imaging system, one of only five in the country. The Timmermeister Family Surgery Center saw the addition of sophisticated robotic technology for spine and brain surgery. Exclusively at Lima Memorial, these revolutionary robotic systems offer our region unmatched precision and superior outcomes. In November, we welcomed patients into the Lima Memorial Medical Center at Wapakoneta. This 16,000 square-foot facility was designed to accommodate the tremendous growth of our primary care services and the addition of specialty care and outpatient testing. In partnership with our Foundation, Lima Memorial opened a state-ofthe-art Inpatient Rehabilitation Center in November as well. Patients are now benefiting from a community-centered environment complete with innovative therapeutic technology, coupled with our outstanding care. Additionally, through the support of our Foundation, two Tru-D disinfecting robots were added to the hospitalâ€™s arsenal of infection-fighting tools. Finally, thanks to donors like you who answered the call to address a critical healthcare need, we will be introducing advanced resources and imaging technology to detect and diagnose cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. It is extraordinary to witness the determination and commitment of our Lima Memorial family to progress forward, despite unprecedented obstacles. I am proud to lead a community of dedicated healthcare professionals committed to persevering through all odds to compassionately care for our patients.
