The comedian Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying — Let’s Party!” I think it sums up perfectly the feeling we have when the days are warmer, the sun stays out a bit later and the trees and flowers begin to spring to life again. We have more energy, and it seems much easier to accomplish those things on our “to-do” lists. We clean out closets and dig deep to do some spring-cleaning. Spring is also a time for rebirth and change. While the New Year is often a time to vow to make certain changes in our lives, spring can inspire the same resolutions. It’s a good time to sit back and reflect on just what you want to change in this time of rebirth. Possibly you want to breathe new life into your relationships by setting aside more time to spend with those who are important to you. Or how about spending more time in nature, whether it is hiking, gardening or taking up a new outdoor activity. Many of us look forward to the farmers markets that come to life with fresh fruits and vegetables.

A Celebration of Excellence Honoring those who make a difference. By Heather Alexander, Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest.
On March 12, 490 people from across North Idaho and eastern Washington gathered at the Spokane Convention Center to celebrate a year of excellence and achievements at Goodwill’s annual Award & Recognition Night.

Goodwill honored 28 individuals and organizations with awards, recognizing their excellence in 2014. “Tonight we celebrate you, your excellence, your successes and your partnerships,” Clark Brekke, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest told attendees. Several individuals and organizations from the communities of Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint and Ponderay were honored at this year’s ceremony.
In 2014, Newby-ginnings helped over 150 veterans in SSVF obtain furniture for their new homes. Many times, when a veteran gets housed with the help of SSVF, they have little more than the clothes on their backs. This is where partners such as Newby-ginnings are such a crucial piece of the success puzzle for these individuals and families. “The furniture and household items she so graciously assists with allow veterans to have their own space that is comfortable and inviting,” said Fawn Schott, General Manager of Grant Funded Programs for Goodwill. “This is a huge boost to their independence.”

For decades, Goodwill has sought out partnerships with other organizations and businesses, working together and sharing resources as we offer a hand up to individuals who are facing barriers in their lives. Newbyginnings, located in Coeur d’Alene, began partnering with Goodwill’s Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) program in early 2014, providing support to previously homeless veterans who are securing stable housing. Theresa Hart founded Newby-ginnings in memory of her son, U.S. Army Specialist Nick
Community employment opportunities are an important part of Goodwill’s mission to help people become independent. Many businesses throughout eastern Washington and North Idaho partner with Goodwill each year, opening job opportunities to men and women who need the chance for a hand up.

In 2014, Coeur d’Alene School District provided opportunities for job seekers enrolled in Goodwill’s Working Solutions program. Working Solutions helps individuals transition

from public assistance to self-sufficiency through job search assistance, interview training and other services. Bryan Martin, maintenance director for Coeur d’Alene School District, was inspired to be part of the solution when he learned about the services Goodwill’s Working Solutions program offers. Bryan and several colleagues partnered with Goodwill and opened new doors to employment. “Customers and employees alike left in awe of their professionalism, knowledge and guidance,” praised Briana Richardson, Working Solutions regional manager in Coeur d’Alene. “The school district has offered to come to Job Club again when need be, work with our customers and keep us up to date on open positions. Together, we were able to better help our people feel more confident and prepared for long-term employment in the district.” 2014 Achiever of the Year: Christi Mosier The Achiever of the Year Award recognizes the accomplishments of a Goodwill participant who becomes employed by Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest. 2014 Award of Excellence: Chris Schilling, Ponderay Goodwill Store Manager Chris Schilling joined the Goodwill family in 2009, starting first collecting and sorting donations at the Ponderay Goodwill store. Staff describe Schilling as constantly striving to improve his skills. He was constantly looking to learn more and grow. In the last several years, Schilling has been promoted several times. In early 2013, he was promoted to facility manager. “Chris is one of those individuals who seeks to help other people, to do things well, and make a difference,” said Heather Alexander, director of marketing. Schilling is frequently seen helping at events in other regions for Goodwill. In 2014, Schilling was promoted to a regional manager role, which enables him to share his passion, energy and skills with other facilities as needed. Schilling’s facility leadership team in Ponderay praised him, saying, “Chris provides a great example of a positive and optimistic work attitude, willingness to listen and answer questions, and outstanding customer service.” Goodwill’s employees and programs are spurred on by the challenge that Goodwill’s founder, Edgar J. Helms, gave shortly before he passed away. Helms said, “Remain unsatisfied until each person in your community has an opportunity to achieve their fullest potential.”

Does anyone really have the kind of house we see on Pinterest? You know, neat and tidy, lots of windows streaming in rays of natural light and perfect pillow placement on their beds and sofas? I guess it’s possible — if they have shipped their kids and dogs to the grandparents for a week, hired a cleaning crew and pulled out the pristine linens from their new packaging. If you’re like me, you are tired after working all day, and the last thing you want to do when you come home is cook, clean and “Pinterest” your house. I’m feeling pretty on top of the world if I can squeeze a workout in there sometime too. I recently read an article about how to keep your house “company ready.” It listed things that people with clean houses do habitually. Here are some of their — not so realistic — suggestions:

Make your bed before you leave in the morning or at least pull the comforter up and smooth it out if you’re in a rush. I’m imagining the confused look of my dogs when they jump on the bed to assume their napping positions as soon as I’m out the door. Do a load of laundry every day. I didn’t know this was optional. Don’t procrastinate. Pick up messes immediately — the longer you wait, the harder they are to deal with. Last week I found a caramel container stuck to one of the back seats in my Suburban. Trying to pull it off, I quickly realized two things. One, it was going to be “hard to deal with,” and two, the

plastic part covered up most of the sticky caramel anyway. Yup. It’s still there. Never go to bed with a dirty kitchen. Right. Where am I going with all this? I’m saying that none of us should be apologizing for what some might consider a dirty house. We should consider it “lived in.” Instead of cleaning up while we’re cooking, we are going to be helping our kids with homework, we should be dancing around when a good song comes on, and yes, do leave those dishes for another time. Whenever I go to someone’s house for an interior design consultation, more often than not, I hear apologies for the mess or remarks of embarrassment about how their house looks. Some even apologize for not knowing how to decorate. Just to be clear, interior design is not about creating a space that you have to keep clean, can’t touch and are nervous when your kids are dribbling a ball through the house. Interior design is about developing the spaces we have and making them warm, inviting, useable and comfortable. We live in houses, not museums. Believe it or not, those of us who work in the interior design industry have houses, kids, dogs and messes too. Don’t apologize or be nervous about asking us for help — it’s what we are fortunate to be able to do for work. We are happy to have a job that allows us to be a part of your lifestyle!

While some of us hear the word umbrella and instantly think of the necessary accessory for the wet weather, those in the insurance industry see an “umbrella” as a way to protect clients, businesses and families every day. What is umbrella insurance? An umbrella insurance policy is a separate policy - really an extra layer of protection for things a policyholder does that may cause injury to someone else or their property. An umbrella policy responds when a significant claim occurs, providing additional money above the money available in a homeowner or auto insurance policy. Often times, the most significant claims come from car accidents, dog bites, boating accidents, rental properties or even slippery driveways. A home or auto insurance policy can generally provide up to $500,000 for damages a policyholder does to someone else. While that may sound like a lot of insurance, the increased cost of medical treatments is very real. It is no longer uncommon to see first day emergency transport, surgeries and treatments totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. These costs diminish the protection available within a homeowner or auto policy. Basic Communication UNDERSTANDING YOUR PET’S BEHAVIOR IS THE KEY TO HARMONY.

As the human population increases, so too do the number of household pets. Cats, dogs and others are all learning how to live with their “human-folk” while keeping peace in the household. To complicate things is the sometimes contradictory behavior that different species exhibit under normal circumstances or in response to stress. For example, a cat that wags its tail is in attack mode whereas a dog’s wagging is considered a gregarious, friendly signal. When human owners confuse these signs, bad things happen! The key to developing a good relationship with companion pets is for owners to have solid knowledge of their innate, instinctual behavior and, of course, their basic needs. Animals communicate their social status in various ways, and it’s the pet owner’s responsibility to learn the cues of a particular species. What makes them tick usually revolves around their evolutionary background. What signs and gestures helped them survive as a species? What do barking, digging, chewing, chasing and begging all have in common? Annoying and often dangerous, unless owners are running a cattle ranch or raising sheep, these behaviors are mostly undesirable. At

first they are cute (when they are pups), but it doesn’t take long for any of the above to become tiresome. Dogs just don’t understand that the dinner table does not hold a seat for them! Some of the above can be downright dangerous. Especially if a pet whose instinct is to herd mistakes a car for a sheep. Most of these inappropriate behaviors are easily avoided but even when discovered late can be treated. Owners must first understand “where the dog is coming from.” A general rule is to ignore the bad and reward the good behavior. Cats most often present with problems that tend to either stink or cause irreparable damage to furniture! Inappropriate elimination, scratching and various aggressions are the most common undesirable cat behaviors. Again, understanding the pet’s ancestral nature is of paramount concern when dealing with behavior issues. For example, cats are often thought of as solitary, independent beings.

Many people don’t realize how much love and affection they really need. Not to mention their obsession with cleanliness; if boxes aren’t kept clean, cats will often eliminate outside of them. Play is super important, along with mind-stimulating toys and accessibility to heights. When the basics are missing, the trouble often begins. So, humans, do your husbandry homework, sometimes a small change can establish harmony quickly.

Understanding pet behavior is the glue for the human-pet bond. When pets’ basic needs conflict with those in the home, it’s usually due to lack of knowledge or a misunderstanding in the house. Bonner General Health RESPONDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY.

The year was 1949, and it was an exciting time for healthcare in our community. A hospital was coming to Sandpoint. What would become the first home for Bonner General Hospital was transported 25 miles along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille via a barge. The original building, a small single story infirmary from Farragut Naval Training Station, has transformed into what we know today as Bonner General Health. While the name and appearance have changed, the commitment to quality health care in North Idaho has been a constant. In an effort to keep pace with the change and growth taking place in the community, Bonner General Hospital recently took a new look at their brand, image and overall community presence as it relates to the services it

provides. In doing so, they surveyed their staff, physicians, board members and members of the community. A health needs assessment was performed and considered along with that of two other assessments that had been completed - one by the Idaho Public Health Districts 1 and 2 (Panhandle and North Central) and the other from Bonner County EMS. “Both of their assessments were completed by conducting meetings, issuing surveys, examining health data and underlying community issues and consulting with health professionals in the communities,� said Terri Fortner, Community Development and Foundation Executive Director for Bonner General Health. Bonner General utilized its Community

Advisory Council to review and prioritize the data collected. The result was a list of four primary health needs: obesity, mental health/suicide prevention, teen births and child abuse and neglect. So just what did Bonner General decide to do with this new information? They quickly went into action. “As a result of the identification of the primary health needs and a desire to leverage our community sponsorships and benefit dollars, we began meeting with local program leaders to identify how we can best plug into current programs and not reinvent the wheel,” said Fortner. “As a result of our discussions, we are participating with Panhandle Alliance for Education, Community Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention, Bonner Partners in Care, the Suicide Prevention Hotline, the Chamber’s Annual Health and Safety Fair as well as numerous other health and wellness activities in the communities we serve.” They have also hired a psychiatrist to assist them in meeting the needs of those in need of mental health assessment and treatment. According to Fortner, the data they gathered provided valuable information, specifically that many were not necessarily aware of the many services provided by Bonner General. They also became convinced that it was time to rebrand themselves so that people in the community could gain a better understanding of what specifically was Bonner General’s role. Thus the change from Bonner General
Hospital to Bonner General Health. While Bonner General Health is a full-service, acute care, 25-bed critical access hospital, it offers so much more. “Bonner General provides many medical services including a 24-hour emergency department, rehabilitation services, cancer treatment through the Kootenai Cancer Center located on the campus, wound care, psychiatry, OB/GYN, Sandpoint Women’s Health, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, diabetes education and counseling and home health and hospice care,” shared Fortner. When it comes to statistics, one may be quite surprised at just how busy things are at Bonner General Health. In 2014 the hospital delivered 343 babies; provided more than 30,000 rehabilitation treatments; performed nearly 24,000 diagnostic imaging tests; and more than 4,000 hospice visits, just to name a few. Bonner General Health’s contribution to the community extends far beyond providing services; it is also a great contributor to the economic health in the Sandpoint community. In 2014, they paid $24,700,00 in wages and benefits and received $200,000 in contributions. It also provided charity care including bad debt - of $3.1 million.

But at Curves in Ponderay, it is not only easy but also fun. There they provide women with the tools necessary to empower them to live more fulfilling lives. And it begins with the first visit. Owned by Barbara and JP Carver, who purchased the franchise in 2011, Curves has transformed the lives of many women. “We are famous for the 30-minute circuit with a coach,” explained Barbara. “The circuit works every major muscle group with strength training, cardio and stretching.” Because an exercise routine benefits those of all ages and abilities, Curves provides a complete workout model that allows each woman to work at her own level while building strength and endurance, and it’s all done in a 30-minute workout. “Our members range in age from 18 to 90 years old,” said Barbara. “There is always a coach available to monitor and assist members.” There are various programs, including some that include a weight loss plan, such as Curves Complete. “With Curves Complete, women have a fully integrated personalized weight loss and weight management solution,” said Barbara. In addition to a fitness program, it also comes with a customizable meal plan and one-
on-one coaching and support. “Each Curves Complete Coach has completed a certification program developed with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the most respected hospitals in the country,” shared Barbara. The Curves Workouts with Jillian Michaels, who is best known for her work on the hit television show “The Biggest Loser,” offer cutting-edge total body workouts. These workouts feature the Curves strength training machines in conjunction with bodyweightbased exercises developed by Michaels. Each month there is a new workout, and the best part is that the exercises are for all fitness levels with a goal to ramp-up metabolism and transform one’s figure. They are offered at specific class times in addition to the circuit. “Recently we have added classes concentrating on body basics, including core strength and balance,” said Barbara. They have also incorporated the increasingly popular zumba to their workouts. There is a circuit class with zumba each Wednesday afternoon as well as one to two Saturdays each month. The staff at Curves has helped many women help regain confidence and improve their health. Beverly is the manager at Curves and the coaches are Kristy, Connie and Crista. “They all provide great support and training for our members as well as contributing to a

fun atmosphere!” said Barbara. Eager to give back to the community, the team members at Curves participate in many volunteer activities including Relay for Life and conducting an annual food drive to benefit Bonner Community Food Bank. They have also raised funds for breast cancer research and ALS, as well as donating funds through their members for local nonprofits. Barbara currently serves on the Kinderhaven Board and volunteers at Bizarre Bazaar with the Community Assistance League, as well as supporting other Bonner County nonprofits. Curves also proudly sponsors the Festival at Sandpoint and gives to the Ponderay Centennial Rotary Scholarship Fund. Helping many women improve their quality of life is extremely rewarding for Barbara and her staff, and they are grateful for the friends they have made along the way. “Our success is due directly to the fantastic women who are our members. They show up regularly, work to increase and maintain their health and strength and serve as a great support group to others,” said Barbara.

IN FOCUS ARE YOU CONNECTED?
Chamber Chick Connection unites all women in the community. By Patty Hutchens. Over the years it has been misunderstood and seen as an exclusive group, open to only women who owned or conducted business in Sandpoint. But nothing could have been further from the truth. Nonetheless, the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce’s Women In Business group experienced a decline in attendance at its monthly luncheons over the past few years, bringing its very existence into question. But the women who were passionate about women connecting with women would not let the group die. It was simply time for a change. It was with great determination that the Women In Business group decided to rebrand themselves. “It was important to us that whatever name we chose, we eliminated the implication that you had to be in business to participate,” said the group’s president, Judy Baird. The committee gave the rebranding much thought, surveying the Chamber members to uncover what they sought from involvement in the group. The answers had a common theme – connecting with other women in the community. “We are dedicated to providing an outlet for the sharing of ideas, education, support and a means to connect with other women,” said Baird. Those who attend the monthly luncheons look forward to not only the camaraderie but also learning more about their community through guest speakers. In brainstorming for a new name, the committee members knew one thing – they wanted to celebrate and connect. The name Chamber Chick Connection was at last decided upon and announced at the April 2014 luncheon. While it has received criticism from some, overall has been embraced. “It was the rebranding of this organization to the Chamber Chick Connection that made me want to get involved,” shared committee member Patricia Geesaman. “Once I heard the mission was all about connection, collaboration and celebration, I was hooked.” The good news is that the number of people getting involved has increased. From the luncheons to casual after hours gatherings to the annual conference, more women are not only networking with one another but forming new friendships as well. “The monthly luncheons never fail to deliver an engaging speaker, opportunity to meet new people and an environment to simply enjoy the company of some great women in our community,” said Gessaman. The annual Empowering Women in Business Conference, held each November, is a highlight for many. It includes featured speakers who inspire attendees both professionally and personally and bring tears, laughter and cheers from those in attendance. But there is more to the annual conference than just speakers, the committee has incorporated fashion shows, Zumba lessons and opportunities for self-promotion through vendor booths or the donation of a raffle item. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom, a retiree, a “professional volunteer” or a woman in the workforce, the Chamber Chick Connection would love to see you at one of their events! Sky Blue Pink
For Pam Lippi, authoring a novel was never on her list of things to do. “I am the least likely person to write a book,” said Lippi, who adds she is a slow reader and never was confident when it came to spelling. But when she woke up continuously at night for several months at a time, she knew she had to literally follow her dreams. “I finally got to a place where I could no longer ignore it,” said Lippi of the urge to write a book - a story of her travels through Europe following her high school graduation in the 1970s.
A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME.
And so her journey began. Her book, “Sky Blue Pink,” which she dedicated to her granddaughter Nina Tajan, was published in 2014. It was over the course of six years that Pam carved out time to sit down with her legal pad and record her story. “Six years with a whole lot of living in between,” said Pam. One reason she chose to write it out longhand is so some of her thoughts would not get erased. If you delete on a computer, it is gone forever.

An avid gardener, Lippi likens the process of writing to that of creating a beautiful garden. “If you don’t like a plant where it is, you just dig it up and move it,” she said. “And you can weed it out too.”
Don’t Stop Believing “Do not ever stop believing in your children. The belief my parents instilled in me my whole life is what I pulled from.”
She learned that parents were reading it aloud to their children. “It opens up the dialogue for those tender questions,” said Lippi of the innocent love story captured in the pages of “Sky Blue Pink.” Lippi has already begun her second book and said the biggest lesson she has learned from the entire process does not relate to the writing process at all; it is about believing in your children. “Do not ever stop believing in your children. The belief my parents instilled in me my whole life is what I pulled from,” said Pam of her accomplishment. She also has advice for the younger generation. “Journal as much as you can. Get your ideas down. Remember it’s only for you and not for anyone else to look at. And above all, it’s okay to make mistakes,” said Lippi, who adds in the words of her father, “And remember – every journey starts with a first step.” Mark your calendars for April 25 from 1-5pm. While much of the book is based on actual events, one that is not is the love story that takes place in the book. It was her husband, Jim, who suggested she incorporate that into the story. “Jim always had great suggestions,” said Pam of the support he provided to her. The book nostalgically brings one back to bellbottomed jeans, Volkswagen busses and rotary phones, but it also contains some serious points, such as visiting the concentration camp of Dachau and witnessing the poverty on the outskirts of Rome. A teacher of physical education as well as health education for grades kindergarten through sixth, Lippi was surprised when her students took an interest in her newly published book.

But don’t be fooled by the name, the Shed Center also sell carports, portable log cabins and chicken coops. Joseph and his wife, Lora, moved to North Idaho last year from eastern Pennsylvania and they, along with four of their five sons, own and operate The Shed Center of Ponderay, each working in various capacities. The couple’s other son lives in Ellensburg, Wash., and they also have a daughter who resides in Tennessee.
Prior to moving to North Idaho, Joseph managed a large shed center in eastern Pennsylvania where he oversaw inventory that included 130 sheds, swing sets and both indoor and outdoor furniture. Joseph’s experience also includes 21 years of carpentry work. The sheds and carports they carry are built locally in Bonners Ferry. They showcase 15 different building designs in various sizes, but can create any custom shed to meet your needs. They offer 18 standard paint colors, 20 metal roofing colors and 11 architectural shingle colors. “Our standard building is built comparable to home construction,” explains Lora. The garages come standard with the floor pre-stained and capable of supporting any item you can fit in the door. “The stained floor repels mud, snow and water.” The sheds can be completely insulated and finished on the interior, and The Shed Center of Ponderay also offers a seven-year warranty, something you will not find in many places. “We can do that because of the attention to detail in the craftsmanship and the high quality of materials we use,” explained Joseph. There are also rent to own options. The Shed Center of Ponderay will help arrange for a gravel pad to be installed prior to their free delivery of your custom built shed. In

addition, the time from ordering to delivery is only a couple of weeks. Hard work, dedication and an ability to work together. That is what propelled the Sandpoint High School dance team to a third place finish at the state competition in March. Coach Alyssa Remsen is extremely proud of the 16 young women on her squad. “The biggest strength of the team is their ability to work with each other. If someone is struggling with a particular move or section of choreography, the rest of the team is extremely supportive and helpful,” said Remsen. “As a coach, it’s an incredible thing to see 16 teenage girls working together to be the best they can be in their sport.” While the girls were nervous to perform their four routines at state, Remsen said they were professional and never let their nerves show. “I could not be more proud of them,” she said. With a practice schedule that includes each weekday morning from 6:30am to 7:45am, two hours each Monday afternoon and a distance run three times each week, the team members

are also dedicated to their academics; their average GPA is an impressive 3.62. The dance team will be performing their annual show on April 24 at 7pm at the Sandpoint High School gym. It’s a performance you won’t want to miss! SHS Cheerleading “Going to state lets them shine with all their hard work,” said SHS cheer coach Lori Gedrose of her hardworking squad at Sandpoint High School. “This includes tumbling, stunting, jumps, dance and cheers.” And shine they did.
a bright future ahead of them. “They will still definitely accomplish many more skills before they graduate.” One important quality the team possesses is an ability to trust one another. With stunts and flips, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. But because of the level of trust they have in each other, they are able to perform and succeed. “Without everyone working together as a group, we couldn’t have such hard, impressive skills that everyone loves to watch,” said Gedrose.

At the state competition in Boise last month, the all-girl stunt team took fourth place and the coed routine also came in fourth. “This is a great accomplishment for SHS and the cheerleaders as there hasn’t been a co-ed group that has competed at state before,” said Gedrose.

The Mad Hatter Tea Party and Fashion Show GET READY TO KICK UP YOUR HEELS! BY MELODY VANHORN. Fun, fashion and tea isn’t what normally comes to mind when you think of cancer, but if you’re part of the The Mad Hatter Tea Party and Fashion Show that’s exactly what you’re in for! In its third year, this whimsical tea party is mimicked after the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party from “Alice in Wonderland” and was created by then board president, Michelle Anderson, to help benefit Community Cancer Services (CCS). CCS is a local nonprofit agency that helps those affected by cancer. The agency was started in 2002 thanks to Heather Gibson, a Sandpoint resident whose personal battle with cancer ended in 2006. Gibson saw a great need in our community to help support the family, friends and neighbors affected by the devastation cancer causes. Currently run by a volunteer board, there are three employees that spend their time in both Bonner and Boundary County providing information as well as emotional and financial support to community members affected by the diagnosis of cancer.

This year there will also be a special announcement of the Volunteer of the Year, along with the addition of two sponsor tables donated in honor of some special members who’ve passed.

Aerospace industry contributes to North Idaho’s growth. By Jani Gonzalez.
Businesses, industry representatives and economic developers are responding to increased airport traffic and the needs of the aerospace industry here in northern Idaho. The Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene airports have both experienced increased air traffic but for different clienteles. While the Sandpoint Airport sees more tourist and aerospace industry traffic, the Coeur d’Alene Airport sees more general business commercial traffic. But business looks good and both are maintaining and evaluating ways to respond to the demand. Coeur d’Alene Airport & Corporate Flyers At the Coeur d’Alene Airport, Greg Delavan, Airport Manager, has seen a change from single-engine flyers to more corporate style jets. “The guys like me, who love to fly, don’t do it as much anymore because of the price of fuel,” he said. “But there are more corporate flyers because it’s so difficult to travel through commercially.” There’s a draw to fly through smaller, general aviation airports such as the one in Coeur d’Alene because business members can pick up colleagues from Kalispell or Missoula, Montana, for example, and have a “moving meeting” while on the plane to their destination. They can have a completely productive day and be back home in time for dinner. Delavan said there’s still an increase in tourism in the summer, but the change to more

corporate flyers began in the early 2000’s with Harpers, a furniture manufacturer that was once in Post Falls, and also with Black Rock, a high-end golfing community. Now, businesses such as ATC Manufacturing and Empire Airlines, both of which are based at the airport, hold court. ATC Manufacturing makes aircraft components particularly for Boeing. Empire Airlines has a dispatch for FedEx packages being shipped to northern Idaho, Canada and Alaska. Empire Airlines also assists startup airlines in California, Colorado, Hawaii and even Europe, according to their website. Lastly, North Idaho College is considering reinstating a flight school at the airport.

The Expanding Aerospace Industry
Quest Aircraft and Tamarack Aerospace are businesses that specifically focus on the aerospace industry. Quest Aircraft designed the KODIAK aircraft that addresses agility in its landing capabilities. Quest was recently acquired by Japanese company, Setouchi Holdings, Inc. Tamarack Aerospace designs aerodynamic and structural aircraft components.
Dye is currently director of Idaho PTECH (Pathways to Technology in Early College High School) where he assists in creating the workforce the aerospace industry needs with students preparing for the field. PTECH has an aerospace, technology and health care division.

To further prepare students for aerospace jobs, North Idaho College created an Aerospace Division in 2013 with a $2.97 million grant from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community and College and Career Training Initiative to attract students and future workers in the industry. The department is located at the Coeur d’Alene Airport and offers an associate degree and certificates in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.

“Those are good jobs–jobs for our kids. [It’s a] good clean industry to work with,” Delavan said. “We estimate $150 million economic benefit as a result of having this airport here, and a lot of that comes from these jobs.” Sandpoint Airport on the Industry Map
At the Sandpoint Airport, the tourism business was good until the recession hit in 2008 and 2009. It has steadily increased since, and its numbers have surpassed those from the recession, manager David Schuck said. “We saw a drop off in ’09, and it has picked up steadily in the last three years,” he said. “It increases on average 2 to 3 percent per year.” In addition to the return of tourism, there are a number of businesses in and around the airport generating revenue. Life Flight, an air ambulance service, and Timberline Helicopters, Inc., which provides services to the logging industry, are based at the airport. He estimated that Life Flight alone likely

Bonner County Economic Development Corporation, credits Quest Aircraft for creating more jobs and business growth in Sandpoint. “Quest Aircraft had such an investment in the community … because they were not only designing the KODIAK, they were also manufacturing,” he said. “From an employment point of view, they really put Sandpoint on the map.” Businesses in the industry not only create jobs but support other businesses by using their manufacturing services. “As far as the economic impact from our airport, we’re probably one of the leading airports in the state because there are so many jobs performed at the airport,” he said.
In response to the growing aerospace industry, the Idaho Aerospace Alliance was formed in 2011 to unite businesses in northern Idaho. Jim Glenn, president of Titan Spring, Inc. said the alliance was created with the help of Idaho’s Department of Labor which conducted a study back in 2011 to identify the presence of the aerospace industry and its needs. “As we discovered more and more companies statewide, it was obvious they were all operating independently of one another in most cases not knowing what the other did,” he said. He is also president of the alliance. As with many businesses and residents, the

industry is here likely because of the region’s beauty and natural friendliness. In addition, local industry and government representatives have enticed businesses to come or stay in northern Idaho with several financial programs such as tax incentives, a sales tax exemption and a tax reimbursement incentive as ways to create and expand good-paying jobs in the area. The Future of the Airports For the Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene airports, both are making preparations to meet the demands of their customers. Sandpoint Airport will refurbish its runway. It’s a temporary fix until it can be rebuilt in 2019 with impending funds from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “To rebuild the runway will cost $26 million, and those funds are ordinarily paid for by funding from the FAA, and they get that from passenger fees and aviation fuel taxes,” Schuck said. Similarly, the Coeur d’Alene Airport is planning their future. Delevan said there is property slated for acquisition when necessary. Right now, there’s a lot of potential, but they will proceed with caution. “I don’t want people to think that we’re going to attempt to compete with the Spokane Airport. That’s not viable–But there’s demand for a flight from Boise to Coeur d’Alene. We could have a commuter flight from Boise to Coeur d’Alene and maybe to Seattle,” he said. “That’s not entirely up to us, but someone with an airline that wants to do that.”

Setting New Habits IT’S MORE THAN WILLPOWER.

This column is dedicated to the middle-aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older,” acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. Did you know that with each repetition of an action, you deepen a little road in your brain? Your brain points to various roads (neuron paths) and says, “Here’s the road I follow to brush my teeth. Here’s the one to drive the car.” You don’t have to slow down and ponder every movement in these activities — they’re automatic, well-traveled brain paths. Every habit, both good and bad, is like that. That’s why habits are hard to “break.” But they don’t break — you must persevere with new paths until the old ones fade and the brain learns to take the new path.

And as we all know, it’s much harder to break a habit that is always rewarded by a surge of dopamine, that addictive, feel-good chemical of reward bestowed by the brain. Did you know that drugs (bad) produce dopamine (whee!) and things like running (good) and sugar and sucrose (not so good) also cause its production? After all, there is a reason the tagline for See’s Candy is, “A happy habit.” Addiction isn’t necessarily bad; it depends on what you’re addicted to! Addiction can work for you (running) or against you (sugar). So when we blithely decide to

lose weight and get in shape and then wonder why we seem to resist our own selves at every turn, the cause isn’t weak willpower or lack of focus — it is most often our brain-path habits and dopamineproducing addictions! And those, my friend, aren’t overcome by good intentions. When you head toward the gym instead of driving to the local coffee haven for a tripleshot, something-sweet latte, you will find that you are trying to steer yourself out of a deeply ingrained brain rut. And let me tell you, it’s a reluctant ride. It feels like the power steering went on the fritz, and you’re trying to navigate with the wheel superglued in place. But before we succumb to complete despair or beat ourselves up because we’re “weak,” remember that just as a muscle will atrophy when not used, so will a brain-path. It will become shallower until it’s only a trace. And a raging, tantrum-throwing sugar-dopamine addiction fades when firmly replaced with an alternate dopamine source – preferably, exercise. “We can learn to recognize unhealthy patterns and stop them in their tracks. By increasing our awareness, we create new healthy pathways. This new awareness brings personal empowerment and creates greater freedom in our ability to choose new responses to old patterns.” (Referenced from the Earl Consulting Newsletter, Winter 2014). There is HOPE!! Your brain has an amazing capacity for change. Instead of pitting your body against your brain and suffering as collateral damage in their war, put some energy into uniting them. Double-Edged Dopamine “A surge of dopamine that thrills us also consolidates the neuronal connections responsible for the behaviors that lead us to accomplish our goal.”*
In other words, the dopamine rush helps create the brain paths that prompt the rush: it creates a habit. Did you know that sugar triggers the same dopamine brain results as cocaine and heroin? So yes, you can become “addicted” to sugar, and your brain will happily repeat any activity (habit) that repeats that lovely “high.” This is why addictions are also referred to as “habits.” The reason I mention this impressive but distressing fact, is that we are so hard on ourselves when we stumble in our efforts to become slim and trim. We underestimate the forces at work within us, and we don’t pause to consider how deeply ingrained our mental habits have become or how sugar has seduced us into dependence upon it in order to feel good. These are the reasons losing weight and getting fit are so hard to do and feel so “punishing.” All the sugar-induced dopamine rewards stop. All the familiar paths to happiness and peace via food are forbidden.

It will be very hard to jerk our wheels out of those deep mental habit-ruts and guide ourselves into new paths. And know that in the end, the same brain of yours that was once mapped one way will soon be mapped in a better way, and the addictions that drove you will not do so anymore. Fibromyalgia WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

Fibromyalgia is characterized by muscle inflammation, pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, poor concentration or memory, headache and depression. Because these symptoms are often similar to other medical issues and not visible to others, it can be very frustrating to diagnose and treat. Causes of fibromyalgia are not clear. Research is focusing on the role of diet, bowel health, leaky gut syndrome, viruses and environmental pollutants. Because the body may be thrown out of balance physically, nutritionally, hormonally and emotionally, it can be difficult to treat if only one area is addressed. To start, medical assessment is needed to identify any underlying conditions. Nutritional consultation with a professional familiar with fibromyalgia is important, especially when medications are being taken. Dealing with emotional and relationship issues is also important. From a therapy point of view, thorough assessment of posture, tissue tension, pain, swelling, range of motion, strength and endurance is important. Also it is critical to assess lifestyle and activity level to develop a plan that meets your goals.

However, if the exercise is too vigorous and resistive or the patient pushes too hard, it can increase symptoms. Sometimes patients experience a flare up and drop out of therapy, afraid to go any further. These ups and downs are part of the healing process. Understanding this and working through it with the guidance of an experienced therapist are the keys to progress. A home program can help you maintain and improve even after therapy.

Everyone goes to the gym for different reasons. Some want to lose weight, others train for an athletic event, or some go just to make sure they get their use out of a gym membership. And then there are those who go to build strength or to participate in cardiovascular exercises for a healthier heart. All of these are valid reasons to visit the gym, but what you may not know is that aerobic exercise is good for your brain!
pushups and countless crunches. But a good gym should provide many options which can be tailored both to what your body is capable of as well as an activity you might actually enjoy. Aerobic exercise includes walking, running, swimming, biking, yoga, dancing and rowing. The gym accommodates all ages, and going to the gym on a regular basis can combat brain shrinkage and increase cognitive capabilities.
“Aerobic exercise has been shown, in numerous studies, to provide brain benefits ranging from enhanced cognitive flexibility to better memory to new cell growth. In addition, because working out floods your body and brain with the hormones that affect mood, it can have a significant effect on your mental health,” explains Danielle Restucci in her article “How Aerobic Exercise Helps Your Brain.”
During exercise, the blood flow to your brain is increased, bringing oxygen and important nutrients to your brain resulting in better memory. Exercise is good for building muscles, but it also benefits the brain by slowing or even reversing the physical decay of the brain. Vigorous exercise is especially valuable for those with health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even cancer. As with any type of exercise, injuries can occur resulting in structural problems such as nerve interference and spinal misalignments that may interfere with benefits of exercise. Therefore, regular chiropractic care can detect and correct a problem in order for you to restore and maintain your nerve system so that your workouts in the gym give you the optimum benefits to both your body and brain.
It is sometimes difficult to fit a gym workout into an already full schedule of work and commitments. It is easy to procrastinate going to the gym and use the time for other activities or obligations. But most gym goers will say emphatically, “I feel so much better after my workout.” During exercise, the body releases the hormones endorphins, dopamine and serotonin, which can decrease stress and temporarily enhance your mood. Tradition states that bacon is typically a breakfast side. But what about other meals? No longer does bacon have to be cooked by itself on the stovetop or in the microwave. Bacon is fast becoming the unlikely go-to ingredient to pair with a variety of foods such as ice cream, chocolate and even alcohol. Instead, bring this savory trend to the grill this summer. Bring home the love affair of the south seas and Hawaii with inspired cuisine, such as teriyaki and pineapple, which offer island-inspired flavors. Bacon-Wrapped Grilled Corn Remove husks and silk from corn. Rinse corn; pat dry. Cut each of 15 wooden picks in half. Use 1 wooden pick to secure first piece bacon at top of 1 ear corn; wrap bacon in spiral to center of corn. Place end of second piece bacon on top of end of first piece; secure with wooden pick. Continue wrapping second piece bacon around corn; fasten end with wooden pick. Repeat with remaining bacon and corn. Prepare grill for medium-hot coals. Coat bacon-wrapped corn with cooking spray. Grill corn, turning frequently, 5 to 10 minutes or until corn is golden brown and bacon is crisp.

FETA, SPINACH AND MUSHROOM QUICHE Brought to you by Litehouse Foods. Servings: 6 Finished in: 50 minutes Gather Ingredients • 9” prepared pie crust • 4 eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream • 2 cups fresh spinach • 1 small shallot diced • 10 ounces sliced mushrooms • 4 ounces Litehouse Feta Cheese • 1 teaspoon Litehouse Instantly Fresh Poultry Seasoning • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Salt and Pepper Put it Together Lay out the pie crust in a 9” pie plate and bake for 10 minutes. In a large pan, heat olive oil. Add in the mushrooms, shallots and poultry seasoning and sauté until the mushrooms begin to dry out, 3-5 minutes. Add in the spinach and cook for 1-2 additional minutes until the spinach begins to wilt. While the mushrooms cook, combine the eggs, milk and cream in a large mixing bowl. Whisk until the ingredients are combined. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the spinach mixture into the bottom of the pie crust. Top the mixture with the feta cheese and then pour the egg mixture over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Cool and serve.

When you think of great American wines, California’s Sonoma and Napa Valleys are probably a couple that first come to mind and with good reason. Wines produced from these regions have gained notoriety around the world, winning awards when going up against centuries old wineries in France and Italy. But there is another region that’s beginning to earn that reputation, and it’s closer than you might think. The Walla Walla Valley is now home to more than 100 wineries and 1,800 acres of grapes. The first winery opened up in 1977 with several more in the early 1980s; and as word continues to spread about the unique growing conditions here, more and more vintners are taking root in Walla Walla. Walla Walla is the perfect backdrop for a romantic weekend, family reunion, girls’ trip or culinary exploration. The historic downtown is well-preserved with old-charm fused with fine dining and upscale shopping. Many of the regional wineries have also placed their tasting rooms in the downtown core, allowing you to sample many different vineyards without ever leaving downtown. For those who want to explore beyond the downtown, there are plenty of transportation services including private cars, shuttle buses and limos. And there are many options for wine tastings as well. You can find anything from small “mom and pop” outfits to waiting list only wine clubs. There are the come-asyou-are to appointment-only private tastings.

Most tasting rooms charge a $5 to $10 fee to sample several wines, and that fee is refundable with the purchase of a bottle. If you plan on stopping at more than a couple, hire a driver so you can enjoy the day and keep everybody safe. While tasting rooms are open year-round, there are a few big weekends where hotels and vacation rentals fill up fast. Spring Barrel release is May 1 to 3; Fall release is November 6 to 8 and Holiday Barrel tasting is December 4 to 6. Many visitors come just for the food and wine, but there is plenty else to offer in the way of outdoor activities. Blue Mountain Resort is a short drive away, offering skiing and tubing in the winter and great mountain biking, Frisbee golf and adventure courses in the summer. Cycling is big here, with miles of well-paved roads offering sweeping views of the valley. There are half a dozen golf courses within an hour drive, and both the Columbia and Snake River are close, offering fishing, boating and paddling opportunities. The historic Marcus Whitman Hotel is teeming with local history. There are also many galleries and museums to explore. Live music abounds with several local theaters and live music. This August, the Gentlemen of the Road Tour, featuring Foo Fighters and Mumford and Sons, makes a stop at Whitman College. If you’re into history, relaxation, good food and good wine, you’re bound to have a good time in Walla Walla. It’s a slower pace and most people
