“M

att’s Place Foundation was born out of a deeply personal journey,” shares Theresa Witlock-Wild, co-founder and Communications Director at Matt’s Place. “My husband, Matthew Wild, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was diagnosed with ALS in February of 2015. He was 41 years old, and like many families, we had no idea what ALS was or what it would mean receiving a diagnosis like this.” ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. As no cure or significant drug has been found to reduce the progressive nature of the disease, it is 100% terminal. “Individuals affected by ALS progress at different rates, but the end result is always the same: losing the ability to move and becoming trapped inside their bodies, with no ability to walk, talk, eat or breathe,” Theresa shares. “Facing the immense challenges and the financial, emotional, and accessibilityrelated burdens that come with the disease, we knew we had to do something to help other families going through the same struggles.”

Matt’s Place began with a vision to provide fully accessible, technology-driven housing for ALS families, helping patients live with dignity and independence despite the progression of the disease, Theresa says. "Since our first home was built in Coeur d'Alene in 2017, then a second in Spokane, our work has expanded to offer partnerships, resources, and grants for mortgage/rental assistance, ramp and bathroom accessibility." Families live in the Matt's Place homes free of charge to help offset the tremendous financial burden that is brought about by an ALS diagnosis. "Our goal has always been more than just providing housing— we aim to create a network of support, ensuring no family faces ALS alone," Theresa says. “We believe that quality of life for the entire family should be the priority until there is a cure." Since Matt's Place was founded, it has helped hundreds of ALS families by providing accessible housing equipped with cutting-edge technology. This technology allows patients to control their home's lighting, security, temperature, and more using their voice, tablet, or eye gaze, supporting enhanced independence and quality of life. summer 2025 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

Matt's Place also provides grant funding and direct support to assist families struggling with the financial strain of ALS. "This disease is incredibly expensive," Theresa explains. "Families need accessible housing, an accessible vehicle, a wide range of durable medical and respiratory equipment, various medications, and additional caregiving support." Creating a sense of community for ALS patients and families is another important focus of Matt's Place. "Through our outreach, events, and partnerships, we are trying to create a shared sense of responsibility," Theresa says. "This disease and others like it (such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's) are expected to increase by 70% by 2040, and will be considered the second leading cause of death. The impact on families, communities, and our healthcare system will be stretched beyond capacity soon, and we need to find better solutions in helping families navigate these challenges." Theresa shares there is often no support or insurance coverage to help cover out-of-pocket expenses associated with ALS, leaving the responsibility to the family to navigate care costs and accessible housing. “2025 will be a big year for Matt’s Place as we continue to expand our reach and impact to ensure more families receive the support they desperately need,” Theresa says, as they look to expand their housing nationwide. “Our vision is to have ALS-supportive housing in all 50 states. Imagine creating housing for families using better sustainability practices, including supporting better forestry management, solar, and energy-efficient design." Matt's Place is currently working on its 3.0 multi-family housing complex in Spokane to showcase the creation of truly accessible housing for people of all disabilities. "This innovative design is scalable and can be manufactured and shipped anywhere in the country, " she says. "By looking at challenges affecting our housing developments, we hope to be game changers in building community for our most vulnerable citizens."

For Matt's Place, the goal is to lighten the burden for families, ensuring that no one has to fight ALS alone. "ALS is a devastating disease, but it also brings out incredible resilience, love, and community support," shares Theresa. "We encourage everyone to take action—whether by donating, volunteering, or simply spreading the word—because every effort helps us create a better future for those living with ALS."

A Cry From the Kitchen Table It didn’t begin with a ministry plan, donor base, or strategic blueprint. It began with a mother’s prayers. In 1984, at her kitchen table in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Fern Nichols felt an ache that many mothers know too well—an ache for her children’s future. Her two oldest sons, Tyrone and Troy, were heading into junior high school, and her heart was heavy with fear. She saw a spiritual battlefield ahead and knew she couldn’t shield them from it alone. So she did what few dared to do in desperation—she looked up from her knees and prayed to God for insight, inspiration, and peace. And then she picked up the phone. “I called another mom,” Fern remembers. “I just said, ‘Will you pray with me for our children and their school?’ She said yes. That was all it took.” 52

Together, two moms began praying weekly—no coffee, no snacks, no small talk—just open Bibles, humble hearts, and the conviction that Jesus hears the prayers of mothers. John 14:13-14 (ESV): “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” They prayed for their children, teachers, principals, classmates, coaches, and especially the school bus driver. “We’re in a battle,” Fern said during our conversation, her voice still strong and resolute at 79. “So we pray with purpose— just like Jesus taught.” From that quiet beginning, the ripples began.

A Movement Was Born A former teacher and veteran of 15 years with Campus Crusade for Christ alongside her husband, Rle, Fern knew the Gospel's power. With four children—Tyrone, Troy, Travis, and Trisha—her mission turned personal. A single phone call between two moms soon became a global prayer movement. With Bibles open, they stormed heaven together. And from that one act of faith, a global movement was born: Moms in Prayer International. That movement is now active in every U.S. state and over 150 countries, under the leadership of President Sally Burke. When the Nichols family relocated to Poway, California, the following year, the prayers continued and began to spread. Fern invited more moms. The groups multiplied. The burden was universal. The solution remained simple: no plan, no fundraising, no goals, just purposeful prayer. Moms in Prayer is one hour weekly: praising God, confessing quietly, thanking Jesus, and praying for kids and schools—a beacon of hope turning fears to faith.

The Movement That Grew on Its Knees By 1986, Fern had introduced a clear, repeatable structure that continues to define today's movement: Praying the Four Steps of Prayer. • Praising God for who He is • Silent confession to cleanse hearts • Thanksgiving for what He’s done • Intercession—for children, teachers, staff, and schools This isn't a social hour or a parenting support group. It’s spiritual warfare. “There’s a reason we don’t have snacks,” Fern says. “This isn’t about small talk. It’s about going to war in prayer.” That spiritual clarity, combined with a reproducible format and deeply biblical roots, fueled the movement’s expansion. Word spread through churches and Christian radio. The breakthrough came when Fern was interviewed on Focus on the Family with Dr. James Dobson, introducing Moms in Prayer to a national audience. Suddenly, letters and phone calls poured in. Mothers across the country and around the world asked, “How can we start a group?” Every single inquiry was answered. Focus on the Family mailed out booklets after the broadcast, while Fern personally responded to every letter she received. 54

A Structure Modeled After Jesus Without an office, staff, or budget, she wrote resources, developed leader guides, and coached women across state and national borders. Her educational background and years serving with Campus Crusade for Christ gave her tools, but her faith fueled her. Initially called “Moms In Touch,” the organization later changed its name to “Moms in Prayer International.” A major part of Moms in Prayer’s lasting impact comes from its intentional structure, modeled after how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. Every meeting follows four clear, God-centered steps—designed to focus the heart and elevate faith. Moms learn to pray not merely about their anxieties but through the lens of who God is—His holiness, mercy, sovereignty, and love. This Christcentered approach anchors each prayer in truth, removes distractions, and strengthens purpose. “We’re not there for fellowship,” Fern says. “We’re there to bring our children before the throne of grace.”

God Will Take Us to a Place Over the years, Moms in Prayer faced resistance—skeptical school districts, financial strain, logistical obstacles—but Fern never thought of quitting. “When things were hard,” she says, “God would remind me: I will take you to a place where your only option is to look up.” And she did. She clung to the promise of Matthew 19:26: “With God, all things are possible.” And again and again, she saw God move—miraculous donations, divine connections, and moms finding each other in the most unexpected corners of the world.

“I just wanted my sons to know Jesus,” Fern says. “I never dreamed He would shake the world.” A Global Call to Christ Fern carried her cry worldwide, teaching moms to storm heaven. She recalls a Kenyan mother weeping, “Jesus heard me.” Fern’s books—Mom’s Little Book of Powerful Prayers and When Moms Pray Together: True Stories of God’s Power to Transform Your Child—share His answers. Her Bible study, Igniting a Passion to Pray, draws women to Him. “Moms want our kids in His love,” she writes. Today, Moms in Prayer groups meet in more than 150 countries, and their resources are translated into over 60 languages. The mission continues to grow from Kenya to Korea, Poland to Peru. At 79, Fern is still active in Moms in Prayer. She’s been married to her husband, Rle, for 58 years, and they have 10 grandchildren. Her life reflects the gentle humility and deep faith that started it all. “I never said ‘me,’’ she says. “It’s always God. And the amazing women He called to walk this with me.”

im and Kelley Hobart began the next exciting chapter in their lives 15 years ago. Inspired by the beauty of North Idaho, the abundance of outdoor opportunities, and the friendly people, they moved into their custom home in Hayden in 2010.

Croc Coatings provides a durable, beautiful, and long-lasting flooring system. It also has a lifetime warranty against fading and discoloration, which is perfect for outdoor areas. “Done in one day, it's one of the best home or business improvement projects ever!” Jim notes.

Everything was more beautiful than they had imagined, except the epoxy flooring in the garage; after only a few years, it had faded, chipped, and peeled up in the areas where they parked their cars. “I looked for solutions and was told I would need to have it professionally ground off, and then they would re-apply a new epoxy floor,” recalls Jim. “I didn’t want to repeat using epoxy only to get the same results a few years later.”

ThymeSpritz Ingredients ( Serves 2) - 2 ripe peaches, peeled and sliced - 1 tablespoon honey or agave (adjust to taste) - 3 sprigs fresh thyme (plus more for garnish)

Instructions

1. Combine ¼ cup water, honey/ agave, and thyme sprigs in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, let steep for another 10 minutes, then strain and cool. 2. In a blender, combine the sliced peaches and lemon juice. Blend until smooth.

It was kind of like a boat version of Airbnb.” What started as a side gig has grown into Beeracuda Boat Rentals, a thriving operation based out of Dover Bay Resort. Its fleet of 11 boats is built for every kind of lake day, from laid-back lounging to water-sport adventures. When their original partner retired in 2022, Jon and Tone took over the business entirely and expanded it to meet growing demand. “We pride ourselves on offering a diverse fleet of pontoon boats,” Jon says. The lineup includes high-performance tritoons with 150–200 HP Mercury engines, Bluetooth stereos, ski poles, Bimini tops, and

Bringing Your Perfect Landscape to Life “We’ve loved working with DreamScapes. After a major remodel, our front yard didn’t match the property, and we wanted a low-maintenance design for the front. Ira brought creative ideas to our planning meetings—many we hadn’t considered! A highlight was shopping with Ira for water features, a stone bridge, and “statement boulders.” His knowledge of stone yards was impressive, and he offered great preselected options while considering our preferences. The natural pillar and bowl water feature he designed now greets guests as they arrive. Ira also took us to nurseries, where his expertise made plant, grass, and tree decisions stress-free and enjoyable. Ira and his team were fantastic, staying with the project to completion and ensuring we were satisfied. They replaced a wall, created beautiful meandering paver walkways, handled lighting design and installation, and improved our irrigation system with individual drip sprinklers for every plant.
