vani Bansal's nonprofit, Dream Dresses, connects underprivileged children in India with traditional Indian clothing that remains unused. A personal insight discovered in 2021 developed into a youthrun project covering 14 states across the United States. The group acquires second-hand Indian clothing from U.S. and U.K. households to provide disadvantaged Indian children with traditional festival outfits they couldn't otherwise afford. Avani was inspired while cleaning her closet, discovering beautiful but unworn Indian dresses that had outgrown their use. “Goodwill has no use for this kind of ethnic clothing,” she explained. That’s when she got the idea of Dream Dresses. The mission is to repurpose these outfits, instilling confidence in kids while preserving cultural identity. Since its inception, Dream Dresses has donated over 10,000 traditional outfits, an achievement rooted in the dedication of donors, volunteers, and local communities.

For Avani, who grew up in Washington after moving from India as a child, visiting her home country shed light on the realities of poverty. This perspective, combined with Washington’s thriving Indian population, became the foundation for the nonprofit. Collaborating with a supportive network of volunteers and donors, Dream Dresses has grown through grassroots efforts and creative initiatives. One of the organization’s significant challenges has been shipping costs. To address this, Dream Dresses launched its “Carry a Bag” initiative, encouraging travelers to India to check in a bag filled with donations. “It’s not a big time commitment, and the change we make feels very tangible when we see pictures of children receiving our donations,” shared Amuktha Nayudu, Washington State Lead. Behind the scenes, Dream Dresses operates with a structure divided into teams, including marketing, social media,

It was a donation of 60 beautiful outfits collected at an annual clothes drive conducted by a high school student. Dream Dresses also values its partnerships, particularly in Washington. Butternut Squash & Sage Pasta Servings: 4 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients For the Pasta • 12 oz pasta (such as fettuccine, rigatoni, or penne) • 3 cups butternut squash, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 small shallot, finely chopped • 8–10 fresh sage leaves • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese • ¼ cup pasta water (reserved from cooking) • Salt and pepper to taste Optional Toppings • ¼ cup toasted walnuts or pine nuts • Extra Parmesan for garnish • Freshly cracked black pepper

Method Roast the squash • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). • Toss diced butternut squash with 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, and pepper. • Spread on a baking sheet and roast for 20–25 minutes, or until tender and lightly caramelized. Cook the pasta • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente. • Before draining, reserve ¼ cup of the starchy pasta water. Set pasta aside. Prepare the sauce • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. • Add sage leaves and cook for 1–2 minutes until crispy. Remove and set aside on a paper towel. • Add garlic and shallot to the pan and sauté for 2–3 minutes until fragrant and softened.

Serve • Plate the pasta and top with crispy sage leaves, toasted nuts (if using), and extra Parmesan.
