Thisdesignresearchtakesasitspointofdepartureaspontaneouslyformedurban spectacleobservedatabridgeinTianjin,whereelderlyresidentsengageinwinter divingandcold-waterswimming.Originally,thisactivityfunctionedasalong-standinglocalpracticeofphysicalfitnessandacommunity-basedritualamongolder adults.Inrecentyears,however,thecirculationofimagesandvideosonsocialmedia hastransformedthesiteintoaperformativeandsymbolic“internet-famous”landmark.Thisshifthasattractedlargenumbersofyoungspectators,givingrisetoapronouncedgenerationaldividecharacterizedby“watchingwithoutparticipating.”

Throughoutthistransformation,thelogicofspatialusehasundergoneadualprocess ofalienation.Fortheelderlyparticipants,divinghasevolvedfromapurelyphysical exerciseintoaperformativeactthroughwhichsocialvisibility,collectiveidentity, andintergenerationaldignityaresustained.Foryoungeraudiences,bycontrast,spectatorshipisnotorientedtowardbodilyengagementbuttowarddigitallymediated presence—throughimagecapture,onlinesharing,andsocialcirculation.Inthis sense,theactofwatchingfunctionsasasymbolicreleasefromthepressuresofurban life,whilesimultaneouslyembeddingthespacewithinacontemporarysocialchain definedbyvirality,"check-in"culture,andplatform-basedattentioneconomies.

Usingthisphenomenonasacriticalentrypoint,theresearchseekstomovebeyond surface-leveldescriptiontoexaminethebroaderimplicationsofthiswaterfront spaceasareflectionofgenerationaldivides,divergentbodilypractices,andunderlyingsocialandpsychologicaldemands.Througharchitecturalandspatialdesignintervention,theprojectaimstoreorganizethephysicalstructureandbehavioralscenariosofthewaterfront,creatingahybridleisurezonethatbothrespectsandsustains theritualizedactivitiesoftheelderlyandprovidesyoungergenerationswithmultiplemodesofparticipation—includingembodiedexperience,casualsocialinteraction,andhistorical-culturalengagement.Ultimately,theprojectaspirestotransformatemporaryinternetspectacleintoapublicspaceendowedwithlong-term socialvitality.

AsChina'surbanizationgraduallybecomessaturated,smallscaleandincrementalrenewalhasreplacedlarge-scaledemolitionandreconstruction Thisdesignexploresthesecondlifeofurbanstreetsfromtheperspectiveofmicro-renewal.

ThesiteislocatedonSouthZhutangRoad,TianxinDistrict,Changsha,China.Itissurroundedbynumerousresidentialcommunities,creatinga vibrantstreetatmosphere,andisseparatedonlybyawallfromtheRailwayCampusofCentralSouthUniversity.

TheclosedmanagementmodeladoptedinChinainpreviousyearshasleftperipheralspaces,especiallytheareasconnectingtwoadministrativezones,inastateofdisuse.Thesefamiliar“leftoverspaces”—coldrailings,abandonedterraceswithelevationchanges,andsealedentrances—whichseemdifficulttorenovate,areactuallyfullofpotential.

Thevitalityofurbanlifeshouldpermeateeverycorner,fosteringwarmandgenuinesocialinteractionbetweenpeople.

Theformerjutemillistransformedintoamixed-use community,withacentralecologicalatrium connectingthree-dimensionalwatersystemsand privatecourtyards.Sawtoothroofsareupgradedto photovoltaicdaylightingroofs,andoldwarehousesare renovatedintocommercialofficesandjute-themed workshops.
