THANKSGIVING, COAST TO COAST

In this season of giving thanks, we find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages us to express gratitude, spend time with loved ones, and give back in meaningful ways. While ambition, competition, and achieving goals are important, focusing solely on them can make us miss what truly matters: being present and appreciating those who have helped us along the way. True contentment comes from within, not from possessions or titles.
Our November issue highlights stories of family, community, and gratitude, featuring Pat’s Carpet, Yorba Linda Water District, Thanksgiving Traditions, and The Cookie Element. Each of these businesses shares thanks with their families, teams, and communities. Be sure to check out the Business Monthly section and our events calendar for happenings this November.
Personally, I am thankful for my four children and the joy they bring each day. I am grateful for the residents and businesses in our communities who support countless organizations, helping make our cities vibrant and connected. I am thankful for the Lifestyle partners who help bring this magazine to your doorstep each month—they are part of our vision of sharing inspiring stories, supporting local businesses, and highlighting the good news in our communities.
As we gather with loved ones this holiday season, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly makes life meaningful and celebrate the blessings around us.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for reading Lifestyle, and I hope to see you around town.

Committed to excellence, Pat’s Carpet combines craftsmanship, trust, and care to serve generations of customers.

As the season of gratitude brings people together to reflect on life’s greatest gifts, one local business stands as a reminder that success built on integrity leaves a lasting footprint in the community it serves.
What began as Jack Petruzzelli’s vision to bring quality flooring and personalized service to his neighbors has grown into a thriving, multigenerational company built on trust, solid craftsmanship, and stellar customer care.
“My father was a wholesale carpet mill representative for 16 years, calling on flooring companies in both the retail and the interior design side of the business. After seeing and sharing in several companies’ success stories, he decided it was time to start his own carpet & flooring company in 1976,” says Pat Petruzzelli, owner of Pat’s Carpet.
His father’s vision was shaped by the desire to offer only the finest flooring products to his customers at discounted prices, with top-notch service and expert sales associates always eager to help.
“The business has followed his vision by adding more of the finest product lines the world has to offer—at deep discounts. In so doing, we bring what everyone wants at a price they can afford.”
Although their time working together was short-lived due to his father’s unexpected passing, he stood strong with the values his parents taught him.
“My parents instilled a good work ethic and a desire to succeed in me. My father was very well respected by everyone he met, whether it was in his work environment, church, or his social circles. This was easily recognizable as a kid, and even more apparent as a young adult, which I experienced firsthand by the overwhelming moral support I received in my early days of running the company,” he recalls.
Pat’s Carpet offers all types of flooring products, including residential & commercial carpet, custom area rugs, hardwood, waterproof luxury vinyl plank, and luxury vinyl tile (LVP/ LVT), laminate, and tile. All of their products include professionally backed installation by their own licensed and bonded crews.
“We have an incredible staff of sales associates who are trained to work within the parameters of your budget while still offering you many options. We are experts in color and texture, finding you just the right look to fit your home.”
When it comes to the competition, Pat’s Carpet has made a name for itself by never shying away from going the extra mile for its customers, from better prices to superior products.
“We measure more accurately, we install more precisely, and it’s all handled here, by us, with our own staff,” he says. “We respond more quickly, and we treat you as if we’ve known you your whole life. On top of that, we want you back, along with your friends and family.”
At the end of the day, it’s all about taking good care of their neighbors, who feel more like family when they walk through the doors at Pat’s.
“We take pride in being able to run into someone whose home we’ve done and say hello, knowing we always do the right thing. We treat all our customers this way.”
In addition to their commitment to providing trustworthy and reliable customer service, the team at Pat’s Carpet readily lends support to several worthy causes across Orange County.
We give to several organizations in our community, including our church, local schools, and youth sports. We’re also supporters of the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, sponsoring their annual golf tournament in memory of a friend’s son who passed at 8 months old.
In the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, Pat reflects with gratitude as he passes the torch to his daughter, keeping the business in the family.

“My daughter, Amber, once a golf professional and former coach at Canyon High School and Rosary Catholic High School, is now in charge of every facet of the business,” he says proudly.
“Her knowledge of the ‘behind the scenes’ operational issues is dialed in, and her product knowledge is unsurpassed. She’s a great leader and very well respected by her co-workers, the suppliers we deal with, and, most importantly, by our customers.”
Under her leadership, the business continues to grow and evolve, securing Pat’s Carpet’s place as a valued cornerstone of the community for generations to come.
“We plan on continuing to offer the best flooring options for our customers at discount prices, backed by a ‘full retail price’ level of service. Times change, but ultimately, the relationships we’ve continued to develop with our customer base have remained strong because we care about them. I’ve always felt that if we continue to do this, our future is bright.”

YLWD delivers safe, reliable water while supporting the community through education, innovation, and infrastructure improvements.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT

This season of gratitude offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the essential services that quietly support our everyday lives.
Yorba Linda Water District, an independent public agency, is one such service—ensuring the delivery of clean, safe, and reliable drinking water to approximately 81,000 residents.
Backed by a team of 82 highly skilled professionals, YLWD leads the water industry with a focus on superior customer service, fiscal responsibility, and dependable water and sewer service.
“Our water system is designed for maximum flexibility. This flexibility gives us tremendous reliability, ensuring that no matter what challenges arise, whether drought, emergencies, or changes in supply, YLWD can continue delivering safe and reliable water to our customers.”
The District also operates and maintains an extensive sewer system, overseeing nearly 270 miles of sewer lines and one sewer lift station.
YLWD is recognized as a dedicated community partner, working closely with experts and stakeholders to set and maintain a high standard in water management and service excellence.
A standout strategic investment of the YLWD is the state-ofthe-art J. Wayne Miller, Ph.D. Water Treatment Plant.
Here is an overview of the facility:
• “Commissioned in 2021 to address PFAS—man-made chemicals, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals.’
• These substances, used since the 1940s in everyday household items, have been found in water supplies across the country, including Orange County.
• “In partnership with the Orange County Water District, YLWD is home to the largest PFAS treatment plant of its kind in the nation.
• This facility allows YLWD to reduce reliance on costly imported water.
• “Over time, this investment not only protects your health—it protects your wallet! The plant includes a 1,000-kilowatt natural gas backup generator, ensuring uninterrupted service even during power outages.”
“THE YL WATER DISTRICT IS MORE THAN JUST A PROVIDER OF CLEAN, RELIABLE WATER—WE ARE AN ACTIVE PARTNER IN THE COMMUNITY.”

KEY STATS:
1. Cost: $27.7 million investment
2. Capacity: Treats up to 25 million gallons per day
3. Technology: 11 treatment trains, 22 resin vessels
“YLWD prioritizes infrastructure investments because not only are we planning for today, but for future generations to come.”
Giving back to the community is at the heart of the YLWD’s mission.
“The Yorba Linda Water District is more than just a provider of clean, reliable water—we are an active partner in the community. Our team is dedicated to building meaningful connections through outreach, education, and collaboration.”
Their community collaboration extends across a range of local events, from Wildfire Preparedness Meetings to City and Chamber of Commerce events, where they share resources and engage directly with residents.
“We also support local non-profits in our service area by providing bottled water for community events and invest in education by offering presentations and hands-on facility tours.”
“These tours give students, community members, and local stakeholders a unique,

behind-the-scenes look at how our water system works and the professionals who keep it running every day. The goal is to empower our community to become informed water ambassadors.”
YLWD focuses on fostering trust, collaboration, and connection.
“Partnership is at the heart of what we do. By working closely with local and regional agencies, including the Orange County Fire Authority, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Placentia Police

and Fire Departments, and CAL FIRE, we strengthen safety, preparedness, and resiliency across our region.”
YLWD values their customers’ water-saving efforts year-round.
Here are some no-cost, water-wise resources available to customers:
• Water Use Surveys: Our Team will check for leaks, inspect your irrigation system, and recommend ways to reduce water use at your home. Contact our Customer Service Team to schedule an appointment or to learn more (714) 701-3000.
• Free Landscape Designs: Need some water-wise inspiration? Download free landscape designs offered by the Municipal Water District of Orange County –www.ylwd.com/ landscapedesigns.
• Free toilet-dye tablets to check for toilet leaks. Visit YLWD’s headquarters to receive yours today!
• Turf Removal Program offers customers who plan to remove their grass and replace it with water-wise landscaping the opportunity to receive up to $3/sq. ft. of grass replaced. Commercial customers are eligible for up to $7/sq. ft.
• Residential and Commercial Rebates are also available, such as smart irrigation timers and home appliances, including high-efficiency clothes washers and toilets. Visit www.ylwd.com/rebates to learn more.
YLWD has numerous projects in the works. Here are the highlights of some ongoing developments:
• Construction of 300 feet of new water pipelines
• Rehabilitation of 2,700 feet of existing water pipelines
• Replacement of 3,000 feet of sewer pipelines and an existing sewer lift station
Other improvements include the rehabilitation of three of 10 wells to allow continued provision of reliable water service using treated groundwater.
Wildfire prevention and protection are also an area of focus for YLWD.
“Wildfires have left a lasting impact on Yorba Linda, affecting both our residents and our water system. That’s why wildfire preparedness has become one of the District’s top priorities— and our partnership with local fire departments plays a critical role in that effort.”
Over the past several years, YLWD has invested in major infrastructure upgrades to keep water flowing when it’s needed most. Projects include a 2-million-gallon reservoir in the Hidden Hills area that can gravity-feed water to homes during power outages, expanded booster pump station capacity, and investment in permanent and portable generators to strengthen reliability during emergencies. As a pioneer in fire protection, YLWD has also enhanced systemwide safeguards, including two Heli-Hydrants that support firefighting efforts across the region.
The Marc Marcantonio Heli-Hydrant, located in Yorba Linda, was the first of its kind in Orange County.
“We have a 3rd Heli-Hydrant coming soon to our community— the Robert B. Diemer Water Treatment Plant Helicopter Hydrant Facility! This third Heli-Hydrant will be owned and operated by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), further expanding regional aerial firefighting capability and protecting even more of our community and neighboring areas.”
“Every project, every upgrade, and every inspection is guided by one purpose: to ensure our firefighters and our community have the reliable water supply they need to stay wildfire ready.”
YLWD credits its success to the expertise and dedication of the people working behind the scenes.
“EVERY PROJECT, EVERY UPGRADE, AND EVERY INSPECTION IS GUIDED BY ONE PURPOSE: TO ENSURE OUR FIREFIGHTERS AND OUR COMMUNITY HAVE THE RELIABLE WATER SUPPLY THEY NEED TO STAY WILDFIRE READY.”
“We’re most proud of the incredible team of water professionals who make our mission and so much more possible every single day. Our team goes above and beyond to ensure safety, resiliency, and innovation in everything we do.”
Their commitment to the community means continual reinvestment in the local infrastructure.
“Some exciting projects on the horizon include constructing a new well, upgrading waterlines, rehabilitating booster stations, and improving reservoirs—all aimed at keeping our water system safe and reliable. Every dollar from your bill goes directly back into maintaining daily operations and funding long-term improvements.
“When you pay your bill, you’re not just paying for today’s water service—you’re investing in both the people and the systems that keep water safe, reliable, and flowing to your home every single day. Together, we’re building a stronger, more resilient future for our community.”

EXPLORING HOW FAMILIES EMBRACE REGIONAL FLAVORS, OUTDOOR TRADITIONS, AND CULTURAL CUSTOMS DURING THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to gather with your loved ones, reflecting on your blessings and feasting on delicious food.
Although Thanksgiving is celebrated nationwide, the different ways it’s observed often reflect the distinct features, flavors, and traditions of each region.
From sun-soaked West Coast beaches to snowy scenes in the Central and Eastern states, Thanksgiving festivities take on unique forms shaped by their diverse geography, climates, and rich cultures.
On the West Coast—especially in California, Oregon, and Washington—Thanksgiving brings radiant sunshine and pleasant temperatures.
West Coasters often take advantage of the weather with outdoor get-togethers, beachside bonfires, or meals
served al fresco alongside sweeping views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
The West Coast is also known for culinary creativity and cultural fusion. Traditional turkey, for example, might be paired with dishes such as miso-glazed vegetables, wild rice with cranberries, or a vegan pumpkin pie.
Here, holiday spreads often reflect the multicultural influences of their residents--Mexican, Asian, and Native American flavors all find their way onto the savory menu.
The warm weather is a perfect backdrop for outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, or playing beach volleyball before sitting down to dine. “Turkey Trot” organized run/ walk events help balance out the big meal ahead and usually benefit a good cause. For many, watching football or taking a well-deserved nap completes the holiday experience.

In Central regions like the Midwest and Great Plains, the Thanksgiving holiday often ushers in colder temperatures, with many areas already covered in a brilliant blanket of early-season snow.
The area embodies classic, hearty comfort food and close-knit family traditions during the holidays.
States like Illinois, Kansas, and Minnesota often include snow boots, roaring fires, and a focus on reflecting on life’s blessings with family and friends indoors.
On the Thanksgiving table, you’re likely to find serving platters loaded with traditional delectable dishes like green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
In some areas, you may be able to sample regional specialties like corn pudding or wild game.
Football takes center stage in many Central U.S. Thanksgiving gatherings, whether that means getting cozy on the couch to watch games on the big screen or organizing a backyard matchup.

Coast
The East Coast holds strong historical ties to the origin of Thanksgiving, especially in New England.
Towns like Plymouth celebrate with reenactments, parades, and feasts based on the origins of the holiday, complete with period-piece costumes and festive décor.
This time of year, East Coast weather ranges from crisp fall days with brightly colored leaves to a full-on wintry mix or mild coastal breezes.
East Coast Thanksgiving meals include comfort food similar to Central U.S. celebrations, but with a special regional twist—think oyster stuffing, clam chowder, and cranberry relish made with locally harvested berries.
Southeastern states often serve smoked ham or turkey, cornbread, sweet potato pie, macaroni and cheese, and pecan pie—and everyone’s invited, because Southern hospitality is key. The same is true in the East, where watching football or taking a well-deserved nap completes the holiday experience.
Whether you’re gathering with your family or connecting from afar, the spirit of Thanksgiving—togetherness— endures from coast to coast.

The Cookie Element blends family recipes, creativity, and gratitude to delight Yorba Linda’s close-knit community.
Since opening their doors in 2016, The Cookie Element, a family-owned bakery in Yorba Linda, has become much more than a place to satisfy a sweet tooth—it has become a cherished part of the close-knit community. Founded by Yorba Linda residents Mike and Amy Spillane, the bakery was born from a desire to share unique cookie experiences, blending age-old family recipes with modern flavors.
Today, The Cookie Element is a beloved local staple, offering everything from fresh cookies baked daily to specialty sugar cookies, French macarons, ice-cream cookie sandwiches, and seasonal baked delights. Customers can enjoy treats in the shop, through local delivery, or join one of the numerous classes or camps.
At the heart of The Cookie Element is gratitude. “We are incredibly grateful to have our cookies and desserts be part of our customers’ milestone celebrations,” Amy says. “It is truly special knowing our products create memories at birthdays, weddings, baby showers, holidays, and other significant life events.” This dedication to making moments sweeter extends beyond baked goods; it reflects The Cookie Element’s philosophy of nurturing community connection, care, and joy.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
The Cookie Element’s commitment to the community has earned recognition, including City Council Business of the Quarter, a testament to the bakery’s role in supporting local businesses and fostering a vibrant, close-knit environment. The Spillane’s consider their customers more than patrons—they are neighbors, friends, and part of their extended family. The bakery is deeply intertwined with the fabric of Yorba Linda, participating in local events, supporting youth programs, and celebrating milestones alongside their neighbors.
Equally important to their success is their incredibly dedicated staff. Mike says, “We could not do what we do without our team. Every member brings passion, care, and creativity to the bakery, ensuring that every cookie, macaron, and dessert is made to perfection and every event is a joyful experience.” The Spillanes’ appreciation for their team mirrors the gratitude they feel toward the community that has supported them from the very beginning.
Giving back is a core value at The Cookie Element. The bakery partners with Goodwill of OC, creating opportunities for employees with disabilities while strengthening the team through valued contributions. Education and youth programs are also a focus.

For eight consecutive years, the bakery has supported the Yorba Linda Public Library Summer Reading Program, providing over 5,000 free cookies annually to inspire young readers. They also support youth arts, leadership programs, and sports, from PYLUSD music and theater programs to East Hills Little League and high school athletic teams. Additionally, the bakery has long supported veteran initiatives, participating in local fundraisers like Folds of Honor at Black Gold Golf Club.
Every day, The Cookie Element produces 30 flavors of cookies from scratch, combining time-tested recipes passed down through generations with inventive, modern flavor twists. Their private event space hosts classes, celebrations, camps, and team-building events, while corporate

clients trust the bakery for gift-giving and special event desserts. These partnerships extend to some of Orange County’s most recognizable companies, reflecting a reputation for quality, creativity, and reliability.
For Mike and Amy Spillane, the bakery’s success is measured not only in delicious creations but also in connections, memories, and the joy their staff and community bring.
At The Cookie Element, every cookie is more than a treat—it’s a symbol of gratitude, tradition, and celebration, embodying the warmth of a close-knit community and the dedication of a team that truly cares. Visit https://www.thecookieelement.com/

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
