As spring settles in and the days grow a little longer, May is a reminder to pause and appreciate the women who have shaped our lives and communities. From mothers and mentors to friends, neighbors, and colleagues, their impact is felt in unforgettable ways every day.

With Mother’s Day arriving this month, I’ve been reflecting on the women who shape who I am. The greatest influence in my life has been my mother. She has always led with courage, patience, wisdom, and a deep sense of empathy. Watching the way she supports our family and the people in her life has taught me what love truly looks like. The older I get, the more I appreciate how much those quiet lessons have influenced me.
This month, as we celebrate the extraordinary women in our lives, I would like to encourage you to engage with the women-owned local businesses in our community. One of the most rewarding parts of being involved in this publication is having the opportunity to uplift and highlight the astonishing women here in Yorba Linda and N. Orange County. From entrepreneurs, business owners, artists, and community leaders, it is important to shine the light on these remarkable women whose contributions keep our communities vibrant and special.
Be sure to check out the Business Monthly pages; we are highlighting 16 incredible women who are making a meaningful impact as business and community leaders in our cities.
This month’s feature articles include Good Shepards Dog Training, the Good Shepard Foundation, CS Painting, a special Mother’s Day feature, The Duchess by NM Designs, and Riverdance 30 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts
This month, take time to recognize and appreciate the women who have made an impact in your life. A simple thank you, a thoughtful message, or spending time with them goes a long way.
A huge thank you to all the women who lead, create, support, and uplift those in our community. And to the mothers and mother figures who sacrifice so much for the people they love, we celebrate you this month and always.

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

The Duchess has long been a cherished part of the Old Towne Orange community, and for Nicole McFayden and Kate Aukerman, stepping into its next chapter felt both meaningful and personal. As mothers and business owners, the opportunity to carry on the legacy of such a beloved space was about more than business. It was about creating something lasting for both their families and their community.
Set inside a charming 1920s historic home, The Duchess offers an experience that feels warm, inviting, and lived in. Each room is thoughtfully designed to inspire, allowing customers to move through the space as if they are walking through a beautifully curated home.
Nicole’s background as the owner of NM Designs shapes every detail of the shop. Each piece is personally selected by Nicole, with a focus on timeless design, layered textures, and helping clients create spaces that are both beautiful and functional. This perspective is rooted in her life as a mother, where home is not just about how it looks, but how it lives.
For Nicole and Kate, balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship is both a challenge and a privilege. Their shared experience as moms influences the intention behind The Duchess, creating a space that feels welcoming, inspiring, and grounded in real life.
Looking ahead, their vision is to continue growing The Duchess as a destination for design, community, and connection. Through curated interiors, seasonal experiences, and meaningful moments, they hope to create a place that not only inspires homes but also celebrates the women who shape them. https://www.theduchessoc.com/

“CHEERS TO THE LATE NIGHTS, THE EARLY MORNINGS, AND THE IMMEASURABLE LOVE THAT COMES WITH BEING A MOM.”
Mother’s Day is a moment to celebrate the women whose nurturing presence and steady guidance help shape our families, communities, and our world.
Observed annually on the second Sunday of May in the United States, the holiday offers a chance to show appreciation for the lifetime of love that mothers give.
While we often associate the day with flowers, brunches, and heartfelt cards, its origins lie in a deeper history of social activism and remembrance.
CONTINUED >
DISCOVER THE HISTORY, ORIGINS, AND CHERISHED WAYS AMERICANS HONOR MOTHERS ON THIS MEANINGFUL SPRING HOLIDAY

In the early 1900s, Anna Jarvis of West Virginia set out to honor her late mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, a community organizer who championed public health and mothers’ causes.
What started as a personal tribute soon grew into a national tradition celebrating the sacrifices and devotion of mothers everywhere.
In 1908, Anna organized the first official Mother’s Day observance at a church in Grafton, West Virginia.
The event was solemn and heartfelt, with participants wearing white carnations, Jarvis’s mother’s favorite flower, as a symbol of purity and enduring love.
The idea caught on quickly, and within a few years, Mother’s Day was being celebrated nationwide.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it official, declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
Today, Mother’s Day blends tradition with personal touches. Families might start the morning with breakfast in bed or a leisurely brunch, while children of all ages show their love through cards, flowers, or small gifts— whether store-bought or homemade.
Spring blooms, from carnations to roses, still brighten Mother’s Day, honoring a tradition that spans generations.
The day is as much about togetherness as it is about gifts. Families share meals, take strolls, or simply enjoy one another’s company.
Even from afar, calls and video chats carry love across the miles, keeping gratitude close at heart.
The day also encourages reflection on the profound role mothers play in our lives.
As beloved poet Maya Angelou once wrote, “My mother was my first country, the first place I ever lived. Her love was the ground beneath my feet and the shelter above my head.”
Her words remind us of the everyday courage and care mothers give, the comforting presence that stays with us long after childhood.
Mother’s Day is a celebration of the love, guidance, and energy that mothers bring into our lives. It’s a time to cherish shared moments, honor their influence, and recognize the ways they inspire us to care for others.
Whether through laughter, conversation, or simple acts of support, mothers leave a lasting impression on our hearts.
This day reminds us to express our gratitude, embrace the lessons they teach, and carry forward the generosity and strength mothers share so freely.

From training dogs to building a nonprofit, The Good Shepards showcase the strength of female vision

At the heart of The Good Shepards is a mother-daughter duo who turned passion into purpose.
From hands-on dog training to a nonprofit foundation based in Orange County, Stacie and Isabella Shepard’s work celebrates women’s ability to nurture, lead, and build a strong sense of community.
Now known as Yorba Linda’s “go to” dog training team, The Good Shepards help clients create a balanced, fulfilled life with their dogs.
Let’s take a closer look at the story behind both the business and the foundation.
“Our balanced, real-world training focuses on more than just obedience—it’s about building a relationship you and your dog can feel proud of.”
The dog training business began in 2020 with a simple but powerful idea.
“We didn’t come from corporate backgrounds or formal business training. What we did know was how to be a family, how to build trust with people, and how to create nurturing spaces where both dogs and humans could grow together.”
From the beginning, the goal was to build something more personal than a traditional business.
“Cofounder Stacie Shepard brings a professional background as a Registered Nurse. Her experience in healthcare shaped the way they approach both people and animals—with patience, observation, empathy, and calm leadership. The skills developed in nursing—careful observation, reading behavior and body language, responding under pressure, and creating safe environments—naturally translated into the way our team works with dogs and supports owners.”
As their work gained attention, trust grew through a relationship-driven method centered on connection and support.
“The idea of the pack shaped everything we did. Dogs thrive when they have structure, leadership, and social balance. But the pack extended beyond the dogs. It included owners, families, and the larger community that trusted us with their companions.”
This philosophy also guided their training environments.
“As our programs grew, something unique began to take shape. We focused on building bonded packs of trained dogs that could work, socialize, and coexist together in structured environments. By integrating trained dogs into stable packs, we demonstrate how well-structured groups of trained dogs can help each other build confidence, neutrality, and social balance.”
One of their most memorable success stories is Pippa, a rescue dog who became a symbol of resilience and transformation.
“Her story reinforced what we always believed: with patience, structure, and leadership, dogs can grow into confident, balanced companions.”
Pippa’s journey reflects how even dogs with difficult pasts can flourish with the right guidance.
This same approach guides everything they do, from training programs to therapy initiatives and their growing network of supporters.
“Clients became long-term members of our training family. Dogs learned to coexist, socialize, and build confidence within structured pack environments. Over time, services expanded to include training programs, pack walks, daycare, boarding, agility, and enrichment opportunities.”
Women-owned businesses have also played an important role in their journey.
“Watching other women build strong, purpose-driven businesses gave us the courage to continue growing even when the path felt uncertain.”
Those relationships became a steadfast source of encouragement.
“Their leadership and support helped shape our vision and reminded us that collaboration and community can build something truly meaningful.”
“A spark of hope can change everything.”
As their work expanded, the team saw an opportunity for dogs to make an even broader impact—leading to the creation of The Good Shepards Foundation as an extension of their training business.

“The foundation focuses on therapy dogs, community wellness, and bringing the healing presence of animals to people who need it most.”
While the training business strengthens bonds between dogs and owners, the nonprofit expands that mission by connecting trained dogs with schools, organizations, and individuals seeking emotional support.
The idea builds on the same principle behind the training programs: well-balanced dogs can help people regulate emotions, reduce stress, and feel less alone.
The growth of both the company and the foundation has been supported by a wide network of women-owned businesses, mentors, and organizations, including Aloha Veterinary Hospital, YogaSol, Nikki’s Kitchen, and Pet Supplies Plus.
Mentorship and nonprofit guidance came from Yorba Linda Women’s Club, Yorba Linda Country Riders, and Eastwood Ranch Foundation, while corporate sponsor Sand + Fog Candles has contributed to their outreach efforts.
“Today, The Good Shepards continues to grow, but our foundation remains the same: family, community, and the belief that dogs can change lives.”
As The Good Shepards continue to evolve, their work remains guided by their intentional motto:
“We Listen. We Learn. We Lead.”

CS PAINTING DELIVERS EXPERIENCE, QUALITY, AND A PERSONAL FAMILY
For over 25 years, CS Painting has brought fresh color and warmth to homes across greater Orange County.
Our team delivers durable, high-quality finishes tailored to each customer's unique needs, combining long-standing expertise with personalized service. What began as a small handyman service run by husband-and-wife team Chris Saris and Mike Kinney soon evolved into a full-fledged painting business.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
Inspired by a family legacy—her father and brothers were all painting contractors—Chris obtained her painting contractor’s license and built a company that has become a trusted name in the community.

Running a successful business takes more than hard work; for Chris and Mike, it’s a true labor of love.
“This business means everything to me,” says Chris. “One day, I hope to pass it down to my kids and grandkids, just as my father passed his skills to me.”
That sense of dedication shines through in every project CS Painting takes on, whether it’s a cozy interior refresh or a full exterior makeover.
At the center of their work is transformation.
Homeowners often seek a fresh look that modernizes their space or brings it up to date with current color trends.
A new coat of paint can breathe new life into a home. Exterior painting not only enhances curb appeal but also protects against the sun and weather, a crucial factor in California’s climate.
Inside, fresh paint can brighten dark corners, renew aging walls, and create a welcoming atmosphere that makes a house feel like home.
Before the brushes ever touch a wall, preparation is key. Taking the proper steps ensures a smooth and uniform finish.
Exterior prep often involves power washing, repairing surfaces, sanding, and priming, while interior preparation may include patching drywall, sanding, and protecting floors and furniture.
“The final result isn’t just about color; it’s about doing it right. Good preparation makes all the difference in a durable, professional-looking finish.”
CS Painting works closely with clients to select colors that fit their vision and lifestyle.
Many homeowners are drawn to earthy tones and creamy beige, while neutral palettes like soft whites, warm grays, and natural shades remain timeless choices.

Still, the duo encourages clients to take their time and choose the colors that feel right for them.
“Our suggestions are just that—suggestions. It’s important our clients love the colors since they’re the ones living with them.”
Choosing the right painting company is as much about trust as it is about expertise.
Homeowners should look for licensed and insured contractors with a proven track record, reasonable rates, and clear communication.
CS Painting prides itself on combining professionalism with a personal touch. Every estimate is detailed, every step explained, and every project completed efficiently.
From smaller interior rooms to larger exteriors, CS Painting consistently delivers unmatched quality and a sense of signature style to homes across Orange County.
With decades of experience, a commitment to excellence, and a genuine love for their craft, Chris and Mike help homeowners refresh and revitalize their personal spaces—shaping homes into beautiful, lasting reflections of the people who live in them.
