Home & Design

Home. Just four letters, yet it holds so much meaning. It’s our sanctuary, our foundation, and the place where life unfolds. Home is where we begin and end each day, where our lives take shape, and where our hearts find rest. While the specifics of what “home” looks like vary for each of us, its significance is universal.

Author Wendy Wunder captured it perfectly: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” With that in mind, this month’s issue focuses on what makes home special—from the warmth of shared meals and thoughtfully designed spaces to the people who bring it all to life.

We had the privilege of connecting with local businesses and individuals who help shape this community every day, including The Edie Israel Team, Interior Exterior Designs, Inc., and Schuster Pools and Construction, along with a reflective look at how homeownership offers value far beyond the financial—creating stability, identity, and a lasting sense of belonging.

I am lucky that every day I get to learn about the local businesses and individuals who make up our cities and what makes North Orange County such a great place to live and grow.

Their stories highlight the creativity, resilience, and heart that make this area feel like home. We hope that as you turn these pages, you’ll be inspired to strengthen your connections—whether within your neighborhood, your city, or your own walls.

Many of our readers tell us they hold onto this magazine long after the month on its cover, treasuring it as a piece of home—whether as coffee table art or a source of inspiration. That’s a tradition we’re proud to uphold, and we remain committed to delivering the value you expect each month.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Here’s to making this March a celebration of the spaces and people vthat matter most.

THE EDIE ISRAEL TEAM DELIVERS

For over two decades, The Edie Israel Team has guided Orange County homeowners with industry-leading expertise, trust, and unmatched service

In Orange County, where your home is your sanctuary, real estate is much more than a transaction.

The business of buying and selling a home is personal, financially significant, and part of a constantly changing landscape.

Jim Allen, Edie Israel, John Israel

Few understand this better than The Edie Israel Team, a boutique real estate agency whose success spans more than two decades.

“How do we continue to be a strong and effective team? The beautiful reason is that we respect each other’s abilities and roles.”

The Edie Israel Team operates as a finely tuned machine, with each member lending their distinct expertise.

Edie Israel leads as “the rainmaker,” known for her superior marketing instincts and sales leadership.

Jim brings tremendous negotiating skills and knowledge of the lending market, allowing him to carefully vet buyers and protect sellers throughout the process.

John’s professional experience keeps the team financially responsible and protects their future interests. He’s also the in-house handyman, overseeing inspections and advising clients with clarity and confidence.

This savvy sense of shared accountability extends to every project. Everyone remains actively involved in regular team meetings designed to strategize next steps for each client.

Communication is central to their forwardthinking success.

Excellence in real estate is never easy, especially in a competitive market like Orange County.

“Real estate can be intense, and you must be a problem solver for your clients. Burnout comes from stress and, often, a lack of understanding of the role the Realtor plays.”

The Edie Israel Team believes that honesty is a professional obligation, even when it requires difficult conversations and straightforward guidance.

On top of that responsibility, technological advancements are constantly evolving.

Artificial intelligence, social media, market shifts, and global uncertainty continuously redefine how business is done.

The Edie Israel Team thrives on navigating those challenges. Lifelong learning is not a slogan but a practice—every team member holds a master’s degree.

“The ability to learn from historic events and trends and translate it to today is helpful and necessary.

CONTINUED >

“Real estate can be intense, and you must be a problem solver for your clients.”

While no two markets are identical, the knowledge gained from each cycle is applied to the new market, and changes are made. You have to embrace change, or you become a dinosaur.”

The team also approaches market forecasts thoughtfully, steering clear of hype or hysteria.

“As we enter 2026, we are confronted by market issues that are impacting real estate. High interest rates, compared to the recent past rates at 3% or lower. Less inventory on the market. High prices for real estate. World issues and uncertainties change what sellers and buyers think and the decisions they make.”

Despite these obstacles, there are reasons for cautious optimism as we look to what the new year may bring.

“Many prognosticators believe that 2026 will be a good year in real estate.

Why? Recent moves by the government will stimulate a downward move in interest rates to around 5%, and that would spur people to sell their existing home and move, and will encourage buyers to put in their offers. With inventory levels increasing in 2026, it will give the buyers more of a bargaining position.”

The team believes this will encourage builders to construct more homes.

First-time buyers are also poised to play a larger role, supported by savings and family financial assistance.

“There is a tremendous amount of wealth that will transfer to the younger generations, and that is beginning to take place. We see 2026 as a good year to be in real estate.”

For homeowners looking to increase their home’s value, seeking the guidance of industry experts is essential.

“With the growth of housing values, the homeowner is sitting on their most valuable asset, and when they sell, they want to maximize that benefit. That growth in home value and the desire to sell makes the choice of the real estate agent more important than ever.”

Seasoned agents are getting a higher percentage of the market due to their experience.

The Edie Israel Team predicts that trend will continue, as it greatly benefits the client to use those skills to their advantage.

“Real estate has always played a major role in wealth accumulation. That will continue to be the case.”

Persistent housing shortages nationwide, combined with rising construction costs, continue to support appreciation in both new and existing homes.

Other market updates include affordability, which is now driven more by wage growth and employment opportunities than by the likelihood of significant price declines.

Few real estate groups have observed the variations in the industry as closely as The Edie Israel Team.

“When we started out, the industry was very different from what it is today. The Thomas Guide is an antique; the computer is essential, and the internet is the driving force. Now, AI usage is the latest change agent in our industry. Social media is a necessity in a marketing program.”

What has remained constant is their dedication to service.

Long-standing mottos like, “We sell more because we do more” and “Driven to Deliver” continue to guide their professional approach.

“The biggest advantage for us is that our clients trust The Edie Israel Team.”

Combined with a deep commitment to the community and a reputation made evident by client referrals and reviews, that trust is the cornerstone of their work.

In a demanding, high-pressure industry that’s always shifting, The Edie Israel Team stands as proof that honesty and flexibility never go out of style.

LUXURIOUS OUTDOOR LIVING WITH SCHUSTER POOLS & CONSTRUCTION

ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT

Discover personalized design, meticulous craftsmanship, and serene outdoor spaces perfect for relaxing, entertaining, and connecting

There’s a sense of magic when stepping into a backyard that feels less like a yard and more like a private sanctuary, where the sun warms your skin, the water sparkles in a custom pool, and every detail evokes elegance.

For homeowners seeking that perfect balance of luxury and comfort, Schuster Pools & Construction elevates outdoor living for residents across Orange County.

Schuster Pools & Construction is a small, family-owned and operated boutique pool and landscape contractor in Yorba Linda.

With over 25 years of experience, owner Jarrod Schuster delivers unmatched craftsmanship in pools, patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens for every satisfied customer.

“I am personally involved in every job and on-site at every job. You deal directly with me throughout the entirety of the project,” he says.

For families seeking to revamp their backyard, Schuster Pools and Construction designs spaces that invite leisurely time spent soaking up the serenity of their surroundings.

The design and placement of every tile, stone, and detail is carefully considered to create an atmosphere of understated sophistication and classic comfort.

“For much of modern history, the residential backyard has reflected the way families live, gather, and relax. As social norms, economic conditions, and lifestyles have changed, so too has the purpose of this outdoor space. Once largely utilitarian, the backyard has evolved into a multifunctional extension of the home— serving as a place for connection, recreation, restoration, and personal expression.”

“The concept of ‘outdoor living’ expanded the backyard’s role. Advances in materials and technology made it possible to create outdoor kitchens, weather-resistant furniture, lighting systems, and even televisions. These enhancements blurred the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces, turning backyards into open-air living rooms. Families began using them for wellness activities such as yoga, gardening, and quiet reflection, recognizing the mental and physical health benefits of time spent outdoors.”

Jarrod’s approach readily embraces this philosophy, blending functionality with a level of leisure that makes every backyard feel like a private resort.

By incorporating lush landscaping, textured surfaces, and ambient lighting, your space becomes a warm, inviting retreat both day and night.

“Today, the residential backyard functions as a flexible, multifunctional hub. It supports family gatherings, personal relaxation, physical activity, and creative pursuits, often all within the same space. Growing awareness of environmental sustainability has also influenced backyard design, leading to the use of native plants, water-efficient landscaping, and eco-friendly features.”

“In essence, the backyard’s evolution mirrors broader changes in family life and societal priorities. What began as a space of necessity has become a place of meaning—one that fosters connection, supports well-being, and offers a retreat from increasingly fast-paced and digital lives. As families continue to redefine how they live and gather, the backyard remains a powerful reflection of those values.”

When you’re ready to transform your outdoor space into an oasis of timeless style and ambiance, Schuster Pools & Construction offers a personal, hands-on approach that ensures every vision comes to life with precision and care.

FOR OVER FOUR DECADES, LEON WILLIAMS, INTERIOR EXTERIOR DESIGNS, HAS TRANSFORMED SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOMES THROUGH ARTISTRY, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND COMMITMENT.

CRAFTING HOMES WITH PRECISION

For Leon Williams, a home is much more than just a structure—it’s a blank canvas and the space where he perfects his lifelong craft.

As the owner and designer behind Interior Exterior Designs, Inc., Leon has spent more than four decades beautifying home interiors across Southern California with a level of precision and artistry that remains a cut above in today’s design landscape.

“It's been an incredible, rewarding journey, being able to bring our clients’ ideas and dreams to life.”

Founded in 1984, the company has built a reputation for design-build, furniture grade custom cabinetry that balances timeless design with superior craftsmanship.

To Leon, home is defined as much by how something is made as by how it looks once it’s finished.

“Our relentless efforts are related to not just higher-end designs we're able to come up with, but also the precision and pride with which we fabricate each and every project–one at a time.”

That pride was instilled early on. Leon trained for four years in the early 1980s at a custom shop called Supreme Cabinets in Santa Fe Springs, under the observant eye of the owner, Charlie Sanford.

“I was reminded by Charlie that there is only one way to do the trade, and that ‘it's either done right or wrong.’ There was no middle ground.”

As Charlie often told Leon, "If it's not installed tight, it's not right."

“Charlie was a good and patient teacher,” Leon recalls, “but there was not much grace, and he didn't sugarcoat it every time I fell short.”

That meaningful mentorship became the foundation of his business philosophy.

“With this stern method of teaching, along with what I believe is a God-given artistic talent, our relentless efforts to give our best in quality, integrity, and making sure our customers walk away feeling satisfied were successful."

From that foundation grew a love for the craft that guided his career.

“I fell in love with the trade because I was an artist and have always stayed true to the craft.”

Because of that devotion, it has become harder for Leon to witness how the cabinetry industry has transformed over time, including a dramatic shift from small, specialized shops to mass-produced options that seemingly value speed and cost over quality.

Today, consumers are inundated with choices from big-box retailers and global showrooms offering ready-made solutions.

“The production aspects and filling the lower pricing needs have somewhat taken over the industry. It's heartbreaking because it's not much of a craft anymore. It's more about who can put together a cabinet at the lowest price. Our trade is slowly becoming a dying artform.”

Though tempting to follow down that path, Leon has remained steadfast in his commitment to true custom work

“I just can't give in to the global push to give folks a box that is considered a cabinet to put your things in.”

Instead, his team focuses on oldworld techniques and furnituregrade construction.

“We have held true and never cut corners, giving our clients more of an old-world, precision-driven, furniture-grade joinery, meaning our projects last longer than the clients will even be in their freshly remodeled home.”

For Leon and his team, quality is non-negotiable, and the difference between custom craftsmanship and mass-produced materials is apparent.

“Our company slogan is ‘For those who know the difference.’ Most people really don't know the difference, but when you see or experience custom design, it's really tough to go backwards to lower quality options.”

In recent years, a growing number of clients have come to appreciate that difference.

“Over the last 5-6 years, our company has experienced a push toward higher caliber options.”

Many new clients arrive cautious, influenced by past disappointments or renovation horror stories.

A visit to the Interior Exterior Designs showroom often changes that narrative.

“We encourage our hopeful clients to come in with their sketches and or plans that they've already started. Here, they can

see the enormous amount of architectural detail, woods, and finish samples we have available.”

The consultation process with Leon’s team is collaborative and personal.

“Whether here or in their home, we spend time bouncing ideas off of each other. I like to hear all of the ideas and desires that the client is hoping for.”

From inspiration photos to hand-drawn plans, Leon guides clients step by step.

“Once we get a game plan penciled out, I usually will draw up a top view, showing what will be included, then bid that idea or other options.”

No project is too big or too small for Leon and crew.

“We do a lot of kitchens, but we’re often doing multi-room projects, like entertainment centers, home offices, bathroom cabinets, simple to luxury closets—pretty much anything that needs to be built. We are true craftsman-woodworkers and can build anything that is shown to us!”

That dedication has paid off.

“We strive for referrals and push hard to please every client. 80% of our yearly volume is from repeat clients.”

Still, Leon looks ahead with a mixture of pride and concern.

“I'm concerned with the art of custom cabinetry falling further into a long-lost craft. It is one that struggles to find qualified individuals with the ability to handle the precision it takes to build custom cabinets and furniture.”

For homeowners who believe that their home should be built with intention and integrity, Interior Exterior Designs, Inc. delivers a lasting legacy of craftsmanship.

Not Just RETURNS ROOTS,

“HOME ISN’T JUST WHAT YOU BUY—IT’S WHERE MEMORIES GROW, NEIGHBORS BECOME FRIENDS, AND EVERYDAY MOMENTS QUIETLY SHAPE WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU BELONG.”

Many people understand the financial benefits of owning property. We hear about equity, appreciation, and long-term investment value from the moment we begin talking about “the American Dream.” In California, especially, homeownership is often viewed as a milestone of success—a benchmark of responsible adulthood and a path to building generational wealth. While all of that is true, owning a home or condo goes far beyond dollars and cents. It is about identity, belonging, and the life you build inside those walls.

EXPLORING HOW OWNING A HOME OR CONDO BUILDS IDENTITY, CONNECTION, STABILITY,AND BELONGING IN CALIFORNIA.

Home is more than a structure—it is a vessel for memories and a symbol of commitment to a place and a community. Whether it’s gathering around the kitchen table, celebrating milestones in the backyard, or simply settling into your favorite chair with a book, ownership creates emotional roots. There’s comfort in knowing that where you lay your head truly feels like home.

One of the greatest benefits of ownership is stability. Owning provides a sense of security that renting often cannot—no sudden lease changes, no fear of deciding to renew your lease. That stability supports family life, long-term friendships, and deeper community connections. Homeowners are likely to know their neighbors, participate in local events, and feel invested in their surroundings. Over time, neighborhoods become more than streets—they become extended families.

Ownership also brings freedom. You decide what color to paint the walls, how to landscape the yard, or how to design your space. You can create a home that reflects your style, supports your hobbies, welcomes your pets, and grows with your life. That ability to personalize your environment builds pride, confidence, and a stronger emotional attachment.

Condos offer many of these same benefits, often with a built-in sense of community. Shared amenities like pools, fitness centers, rooftop decks, parks, and social spaces encourage connection. Gated access and shared security features create peace of mind, while community events and common areas make it easy to meet neighbors. For many, a condo is a perfect starting point—an affordable step into ownership—or a long-term choice that supports a low-maintenance, vibrant lifestyle.

Single-story homes, condos, and traditional houses all serve different needs, but each offers a sense of place. Some people grow family roots in a home with a yard and extra space. Others thrive in the simplicity and social energy of condo living. Both provide personal space, privacy, and the chance to build meaningful routines.

There are even emotional and health benefits tied to ownership—reduced stress from stability, pride from accomplishment, and comfort from familiarity. In the end, owning in California isn’t just about investment. It’s about independence, belonging, and creating a place where life happens.

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.

Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.

“Tackling each space and room as its own story and concept is how to make a new space feel personal,” Manz explains. “But bringing it all together cohesively is always the challenge.”

Her solution? Warmth, intention, and a strong belief in the power of people. In new builds it can take years for a home to shed its newness. For this project, the goal was to fast-track that sense of belonging by layering in pieces with history and heart. Vintage market finds, local artists, and meaningful objects play a starring role throughout the home.

“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”

That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED

The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.

“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”

A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

In large rooms, architectural details like niches, built-ins, or material changes can create visual rhythm while giving meaningful objects a true home.

ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.

Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.

MATERIALS:

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

An entryway doesn’t need to be loud to be memorable. Combine tactile materials with one or two meaningful elements to create an instant emotional connection.

Santa and
Tekió Light, Vintage Rainer Draumiller Chairs, American Leather custom couch in Bison Butterscotch, Flos Bellhop lamp, BZippy Vase, Plush Moroccan rug
Luca split stone pavers, Vintage Turkish rug, Plants, Virginia Sin Wall hook

POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT

If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

MATERIALS:

Particular Tile in Satin Terracotta and Vanilla Bean, Arté Wallcovering Shards in Brick Red, Red travertine sink, Rachel Donath chunky mirror, Playful art work by Olivia Fields

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

Small spaces are ideal for experimentation. Mix patterns, finishes, and textures within a tight color family to create depth without overwhelm.

LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings. Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.

MATERIALS:

Virginia Sin pendant light, In Common With sconce, Arté Oblong wall covering in Ochre, Particular Tile in Vapor, Custom sage velvet sofa, Plush Vintage Moroccan rug

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

When a room serves many purposes, let texture and tone create cohesion. A restrained palette with varied finishes keeps the space flexible and serene.

At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.
