Summertime

The photo is of my daughter in the military and my son at a military barbecue in San Diego.

Summertime is here! Time for some favorite activities, trips, local exploration, or lazy days by the pool soaking up some sun.

The days grow longer, and the weather gets warmer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure.

Summertime is a magical season. Fond memories of childhood sleepovers, family vacations, and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes. In our community, we can hang out with horses in the cooler mornings and watch a summer flick in the evening at the park with neighbors and friends.

Some of the best times can be a backyard barbecue with family and friends, riding a bike on a beautiful trail, a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky.

In addition, we want to thank our military and the veterans in our communities for their service in honor of the 4th of July. We have immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation.

I hope you can enjoy these hot days of summer, and make new memories with family and friends.

Just like summertime has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of N Orange County and the areas and places you make plans to visit.

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s the perfect time to travel.

At Churon Winery in Temecula, guests can relax while drinking in breathtaking panoramic views of wine country that are reminiscent of Tuscany.

Since 2001, guests of the winery have enjoyed the gorgeous views, top-tier service, and opulent amenities.

As one of the few wineries in the area with a hotel, planning a visit to Churon doesn’t have to be a quick day trip—guests can extend their stay overnight or longer.

“We’re located in the heart of wine country, right next to several other great wineries. Upon checking in, our front desk staff is happy to share recommendations of the best ones to visit. Guests can book a wine tour with one of several companies that will pick them up right here at Churon.”

Other nearby activities include hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, and tours at several neighboring wineries.

Visit Planes of Fame Air Museum

Let your inner history buff take flight at the unbelievable Planes of Fame Air Museum.

Now in its 66th year, Planes of Fame is one of the largest aviation-themed museums in the world, located at the Chino Airport since 1974.

“Planes of Fame Air Museum is like a step back in time,” says Brian Finnegan, Director of Education Programs and Museum Development.

“You’ll see aircraft from the earliest days of aviation (including a replica of the 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer) through aircraft of the First World War, the Golden Age of aviation, the Second World War plus early jets from the 1950s and 1960s,” he says.

“Guests can see these aircraft up-close and learn about them through graphics, displays, and our team of Museum Guides.”

Planes of Fame is primarily a volunteer-driven business. Guests interact with knowledgeable, friendly volunteers who fill roles from Tour Guides and Education Guides to restoration teams and detailers. Prepare to be amazed at artifacts that have come to life straight from the history books.

“We are a ‘flying museum’ in that several of the aircraft in our collection have been restored to flight,” says Brian. “These aircraft are featured in monthly museum events and air shows throughout the west, as well in movies and television shows.

THE PLANES OF FAME AIR MUSEUM TAKES VISITORS ON AN ACTION-PACKED RIDE THROUGH AVIATION HISTORY.

Planes of Fame boasts some of the rarest aircraft from our aviation past, including the world’s only authentic flying Japanese Zero, several that are the last surviving examples of their kind, and dozens of aircraft that served with air forces around the world.”

The museum was founded by lifelong aviation enthusiast Edward T. Maloney of Pomona.

“At the end of World War II, Ed observed the destruction of aircraft from that war that were now deemed obsolete,” notes Brian.

“Pledging to save as many aircraft as he could, he spent the next sixty plus years in that endeavor.  When he passed away in 2016, it was estimated that Ed had saved over 250 aircraft of varying types – some the last or near last of their kind. These aircraft are in the Planes of Fame Air Museum collection as well as in Museums throughout the world.”

According to Brian, Ed’s dream lives on, thanks to the museum’s many efforts.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

“The museum has also embarked upon an expansion program in the Central Coast region of California,” says Brian. “At the Santa Maria Airport, a new facility is being constructed that will give the Museum two locations for visitors to experience aviation history through flying demos, airshows, displays, and restoration work.

Phase One of the Santa Maria Expansion is expected to open in 2025.

Carbon Canyon NatureTrail

Considered a beginner route, this 3.1-mile trail takes about an hour to trek.

Carbon Canyon is a popular spot for hiking, running, walking, and exploring, so you’re bound to encounter other outdoor enthusiasts.

Want to bring your furry friend along? Dogs are allowed on a leash.

Redwoods Grove

Another beginner-friendly route that’s popular with the public, this trail extends 1.5 miles.

During your approximately 29-minute hike, be sure to soak up your beautiful surroundings on this dog-friendly trail.

Gilman Peak

For a more challenging hike, this 4.1-mile trail takes about 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete.

While this hotspot for hiking, running, and other outdoor exploits offers lots of lovely scenery that you can visit anytime, you’ll need to leave your four-legged friends at home.

Weir Canyon Trail

This 3-mile trail is perfect for beginner-level hikers looking for a leisurely stroll. Expect to spend about 2 hours hiking this trail, where you’ll feel miles away the second you step foot onto the walking path.

Natural beauty blooms all around Weir Canyon, which is one of the best places to see wildflowers, including the California poppy. Leashed dogs are allowed on this trail.

Jump in the saddle and gain a new perspective at picturesque Irvine Park.

The expansive park covers more than 500 acres of protected wilderness to roam.

Known as Orange County’s go-to spot for horseback adventures and English and Western riding lessons, Country Trails and Riding School sits in a spectacular setting. Lessons are available for beginner-intermediate levels, and summer camps are also offered.

Groves of Live Oaks and Sycamore trees frame the gorgeous backdrop, where you’re sure to spot creatures like deer, hawks, and peacocks on your visit.

4. THE OC FAIR

What says “sweet summertime” more than a fair? At the OC Fair, which runs from July 14-August 13 in Costa Mesa, attendees of all ages can immerse themselves in plenty of food and fun.
