LIFESTYLE LETTER
Local Love
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Brian Patchett | brian.patchett@citylifestyle.com AD DESIGNER
Evan Deuvall
Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local businesses, makers, and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents, and special interests fall by the wayside. We have to be deliberate allowing ourselves time to explore and enjoy the interests that we love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. We hope you enjoy reading and show love to our local businesses, including Black Gold Golf Course/Derricks Grille Restaurant, Towne & Country Designs, and JCA Insurance Services. Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something that resonates with us. Read about Shilpa Hardas, an art teacher and professional artist, Brian Cronkrite's crocheting skills, and Julie Cruz, a potter artist. We have two local 5th graders who qualified out of thousands of candidates and are competing in the junior Kids Baking Championships. Check the girls out on The Food Network on Monday nights. We are proud of you! Turn to the “business monthly” section to read about Disneyland’s After Dark-Sweetheart Nites in February and learn about a great Yorba Linda florist & gift shop for that special person on Valentine's Day. Remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local businesses and artists right here in our community. Thank you for reading Lifestyle, and I hope to see you around town.

FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME ALL OVE R AGA I N TOWNE & COUNTRY DESIGNS HAS BEEN A FIXTURE ON MAIN STREET FOR MANY YEARS.
“HERE WE ARE, 16 YEARS LATER, STILL IN OPERATION AND SUCCEEDING IN OUR LOVELY CITY,” SAYS ROSE. “THE CHARM OF MAIN STREET STILL EXISTS AND OFFERS MANY TALENTED PEOPLE PROVIDING GOODS AND SERVICES TO THE [COMMUNITY],” SAYS ROSE EDWARDS, OWNER OF TOWNE & COUNTRY DESIGN, INC. Home is where the heart is, and for Towne & Country Design’s owner, Rose Edwards, helping people fall in love with their surroundings all over again is what it is all about. This is our commitment to each and every client. Towne & Country Design, Inc. specializes in kitchen & bath design and offers complete management services throughout the installation of home remodeling projects. Since opening Towne & Country’s showroom doors in 2006, Rose has been driven to provide clients with a totally unique experience. The first step was choosing the right location. Rather than settling in a strip mall or warehouse, Rose knew that a central spot was key to creating the atmosphere she envisioned for her business, Main Street, The heart of a City. After scouring locations in nearby Tustin and Orange, it became clear that Yorba Linda was the perfect place to call “home.”

“Here we are, 16 years later, still in operation and succeeding in our lovely city, where the charm of Main Street still exists,” says Rose. Towne & Country Design provides high-quality home improvement, fixtures, and finishes, something sought by the most discerning customer eye. The result? Reinvigorated, tastefully remodeled homes with enviable style to spare—and drastically increased value. “Many of the homes we have remodeled in the past have sold much faster and well over asking price,” says Rose. Realtors have described our designs as well-planned and well-thought-out kitchens. That unmistakable attention to detail and eye for choosing the finest products and materials includes the beautiful custom cabinetry, sourced directly from U.S. factories, and backed by a lifetime warranty. “Our favorite line is made by Wood-Mode in Pennsylvania. Cabinetry or wood flooring made from hardwood where the climate freezes and thaws typically result in the very best quality of wood,” says Rose. “The proteins & sugars which occur naturally in the wood become hardened in a colder climate and will hold up much better. It is simply good logic to find quality products since an expensive countertop and tiles will be going in at the same time. You would not want your base underneath all of that investment to fail.” Towne & Country also pride themselves on being environmentally conscious. “We use manufacturers who build well-crafted cabinetry that is safe for your home and our planet. Our product lines are rigorously tested—not only for durability but for all environmental regulations, to deliver customers products dedicated to health-conscious living for the rest of their lives and generations to come,” says Rose. All clients who enter the showroom are treated to an immersive experience that immediately puts you at ease, complete with all the comforts of a well-designed home. “What you will experience in our relaxing and beautiful showroom is a 3D design presentation of your kitchen or bath. After visiting your home and taking measurements, we provide a mutually agreed-upon working budget. You will view your custom design on a large monitor and are given the opportunity to make any desired changes until you see the room of your dreams come to fruition,” says Rose. From there, we work closely with our clients throughout product selections, color combinations, and the creation of a custom installation guide for the installer of your choice. The Towne & Country team also offers installation services through their longtime working relationships with several local general contractors and engineers, all of whom are experts when it comes to the detail-driven process involved in creating a beautifully remodeled home. No matter what challenges the pandemic presents, Towne & Country Design, Inc. remains committed to providing an unwavering level of superior service. “While there have been some ‘lean’ years due to variances in the economy [with the pandemic and now supply chain issues], we believe we survive through our personalized service and high-quality products provided at reasonable prices, “says Rose. https://towneandcountrydesign.com/

insurance, everyone treated like family INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENCY HANDLING ALL YOUR INSURANCE NEEDS. ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
Loving your work and your community means making sure everyone—and everything—you care about is properly protected. JCA Insurance Services, serving the local Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills communities, provide that safeguard with dependable personal insurance solutions for families (including Auto, Home, Life, Health, and Boat coverage), as well as small-to-medium-sized businesses. Business coverage options include Business Insurance, Workers’ Compensation, Group Health, Business Auto, Bonds, and more. To JCA Insurance Services’ owner, John Crawley, there’s something special about loving what you do and where you do it— especially when the two go hand-in-hand. John has been an integral part of the Yorba Linda/Anaheim Hills community for over 35 years, having lived and raised his children in the area while building his business. Even the name “JCA” is built on family ties. The name represents family members’ initials—those of founder John, son Chris, and daughter Arianna. Although many years have passed during his time living locally, John is particularly proud of an enduring component of the community—the sense of family and togetherness. “The communities have grown so much over that time, but its greatest strength is the family community. It is
where people come to raise their families. In addition, there has been so much growth of small businesses that [in turn] support the communities.” John is also grateful for the professional community in which he has learned so much and developed key relationships. “I am fortunate to be a part of a small network of insurance professionals from around the country. We share ideas and methods. It is exciting to see how involved Insurance professionals are in their business and communities,” he says. John cites his father as his greatest source of inspiration to make a positive impact in people’s lives. “He started in the insurance business when I was young,” John recalls. “I grew up in the industry. His approach to everyone was warm and welcoming. He worked so hard and raised nine children. His greatest joy was his family! He ran his business with that foundation.” Fueled by the support of his community, his father’s legacy, and his driven, dedicated JCA team, John is on a mission to deliver the best insurance coverage and options to yet another major source of his inspiration—small business owners. “We provide insurance to many small business owners. They are the hardest working people I have ever met!

Restaurant owners, engineers, architects, contractors, attorneys, and [many more],” says John. “All of these people have one thing in common—the desire to work hard and provide for their families and staff. I enjoy watching their businesses grow and seeing them achieve the success of their dreams.” Instead of worrying about what their insurance competitors are up to, JCA Services chooses to look within— by focusing on their business and their clients’ needs. Staying focused on what really matters starts by reiterating the core values the company was built upon— experience, family, and security. “Our agency is built around the client’s emotional experience,” notes John. “Do they trust our recommendations? Do they feel satisfied working with us and secure in our service? To ensure every client answers ‘yes,’ we must be knowledgeable and confident in the products we represent, providing the best technology to meet their needs,” he says. With the new year already underway, the company hopes to further strengthen its community ties throughout 2022. JCA plans to achieve this goal by immersing themselves in more local events, as well as kicking off their “No Texting and Driving” and “Safe Driving” Campaigns mid-year. To ensure clients have consistent, convenient access to their insurance professionals, JCA offers seven different modes of communication—phone, text messaging, email, fax, website, live chat, and a mobile app are all readily available. JCA Insurance Services is a company clients can clearly depend on while feeling confident that they’ll always be treated just like family. https://jcainsure.com/

members with educational scholarships, during a special golf tournament held in November 2021. This past year also marked the Club’s first annual Holiday Bash, benefitting the organization’s Operation Santa Claus and Senior Santa & Friends. Black Gold greatly appreciates the pivotal role fellow local businesses played in the collaborative success of the events by donating and supporting their time, products, and talents to such worthy causes. Looking ahead, the team hopes to continue this spirit of philanthropy and community togetherness, with a goal of growing to at least three or four annual charitable events, benefitting either local and/or national organizations in the years to come. That “giving back” mentality is something that Black Gold’s Tournament/ Marketing Director Brian Suk feels resonating throughout the entire Yorba Linda area. “One of my goals is to find a way to give back. We are truly grateful for everyone and

look forward to years and years of making a difference in our community,” he says. For the creative minds and hearts that comprise Black Gold’s professional staff, planning and executing these events with exquisite attention to detail are all part of a bigger mission—continuing to develop new and unique ways to make memorable experiences for all who visit Black Gold Golf Club, as well as the greater community. “We do things because we care. Being a part of this team isn’t a job—it’s a vision, a goal, and something we love to be a part of!” says Brian. Brian recalls the seemingly instantaneous transformation that occurred at Black Gold as soon as General Manager Rich Cessna joined the team a few years ago. “Rich has been in the golf industry for over 40 years and began putting his stamp on things the moment he stepped on the property,” says Brian. “From that very moment, things began to change. Brian Cronkrite started crocheting four years ago when his mom showed him how to use a pattern to create his own plush toy, Hubble the Squid. With great attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and talent for geometry, Hubble the Squid soon had some buddies with Atlas the Lion Cub, Jupiter the Rabbit, and a bevy of other plush animals Brian made without a pattern. Although he, his mom, and his sister still crochet from patterns as a family hobby (Projectarian is his favorite), Brian often freehands complex projects using only his imagination and mental math skills. He has created fantastical animals, toys, and playsets such as Minecraft and Among Us for himself, his family, and classmates. Julie Cruz pivoted away from a traditional job to become a full-time potter later in life. Just one semester of high school ceramics introduced her to the art she returned to when it was time for a career change. Her pottery studio occupies half the garage she shares with her husband, who does all the welding and carpentry for her art show displays. Every piece that comes out of the kiln is up for sale and photographed for her Cruzinart Instagram account. “I love what I do. My only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.” Not everyone has the ability to nurture their artistic side early, but the process is the point. Not how, or when, you finish. Shilpa Hardas started her art education early and has stayed with it to this day. “I knew by 8th grade I was

going to be an artist,” says Shilpa. It was the art table at her school’s Career Day that grabbed her attention and never let go. An Indian immigrant, Shilpa’s family wasn’t thrilled about a non-traditional career, but she says it was worth fighting for. “My stubbornness brought me here,” she says with a laugh. “If not for my determination I would have been pulled away from it. I don’t think I would be happy doing anything else.” As an art teacher and professional artist, Shilpa welcomes students of all ages to her Brea studio while manifesting a gallery space to display and sell her art. “The power of observation goes a long way in any field. I teach children the foundations, then graduate to three-dimensional shapes that form our world.” Shilpa’s collection of abstract art speaks to current ecological issues and aims to inspire young artists of diverse backgrounds to express their own ideas through painting with a message that makes a real impact.
“There’s something therapeutic about getting my hands into a blob of mud and making something useful out of it.” – Julie Cruz

TALENTED LOCAL CHEFS COOKING UP SUCCESS.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
KIDS BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP, YORBA LINDA PROUD
Summer Hague – 5th grader

Whipping up delectable dishes is second nature to local brilliant bakers Summer Haque and Ellora Martinez. These talented chefs are cooking up success as contestants on the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship.
SUMMER HAQUE Summer Haque loves baking delicious desserts—cake pops, pies, cookies, and cakes—as much as she enjoys teaching her peers to do the same. Summer, a 5th-grade GATE student at Golden Elementary, began hosting

weekly Zoom baking tutorials to share her talents with others—and Summer’s Sweet Show was a success! Science-minded Summer sees baking as one big experiment, testing out different ingredients and temperatures for a savory result. She’s gone from assisting her mom in the kitchen to taking on a starring role. Now, Summer’s skills are taking center stage on season 10 of Kids Baking Championship, as one of twelve contestants chosen from thousands to battle for the title of baker extraordinaire. Instagram @summers_sweet_show
ELLORA MARTINEZ From the very first Kids Baking Championship episode she watched, Ellora Martinez was hooked. Hailing from a family of self-professed non-bakers, Ellora was enamored with the sweet confections concocted by her peers alongside hosts Duff Goldman and Valerie Bertinelli. A baking competition with her dad cemented a newfound love for baking
dozens of sugary creations. Since her very first Oreo cake in 2020, Ellora embarked on a self-taught mission to hone her craft. Nine-year-old Ellora’s perseverance took her dreams from a vision board to a spot as one of twelve contenders on season 10 of the Kids Baking Championship, mixing and measuring with the best young bakers around. creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions.

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
