The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Supporting Kids th rough th e Holidays When a loss occurs, it can hit extra hard during the holidays. There might be expectations that the holiday season brings feelings of joy, thankfulness, appreciation, and wishes come true however, for some families the holidays can also mean loss. As a teen therapist who works with teenagers struggling with grief, the holiday season can be confusing. Kids might observe the joy around them and not understand why they feel sadness due to the loss of a loved one, missing friendships, or the change in the family dynamics. FEEL YOUR EMOTIONS One of the most helpful ways to support your kids during this time is to allow them to feel their emotions, whatever those may be. Each child might grieve differently and it’s important for you, as the parent, to allow them space to grieve and feel happy on their terms. EMBRACE THE CHANGES The holiday season might look different than most years and that’s okay. Lean into the idea that this holiday season might have a mix of new and old traditions and involve different activities or different people. Another way to support your kid would be to ask them what new tradition or activity they would like to take part in this holiday season. HONOR THE LOSS When suffering a loss, pretending that everything is fine can set you and your child up for stress and disappointment.

The intentions are good, but your child may feel that there is something missing or the family has changed. A helpful tip would be for you to take the time to honor the loss. This may look like doing an activity in remembrance of the loved one. Explore with your kid what would be a good activity, volunteer opportunity, craft, or fundraiser they would like to do in honor of their special person. KEEP NORMAL ROUTINES Kids thrive off routine and structured schedules. Keeping their normal routines and schedule during the holidays can provide them with stability and security while they weather their grief. It is important for parents to have a flexible mindset where they try to keep the normal schedule of bedtime and meal routines, however, are also cognizant of what their kid needs. SUPPORT AND ALLOW SPACE Lastly, your kid needs you during this holiday season. Supporting and allowing space for your child to grieve is sacrificial and emotionally draining at times. While your child is looking to you to be their anchor and provide stability, parents must take moments for themselves to grieve and get support. “I understand how lonely and difficult it can be as a mother,” says Emily, who became a single mom and moved to a new state after her children’s diagnoses. “It is our goal and mission to work with the whole family by supporting and educating parents, offering counseling within our scope of ability, and referring them to familiar resources when needed,” she says. Through hard work and perseverance, Emily’s children continue to flourish, and she credits them with helping her so much in return. “The clinic was formed by their hands from the very beginning. They helped me build, paint, clean, and celebrate each year,” she says. “Without them, I never would have been able to see the need for such a valuable resource in this community.” Emily and her staff ensure that every child, from newborn to young adult, has a happy, comfortable experience in the clinic—especially during the holidays when the clinic is decked out with festive sights and activities to keep kids engaged. “We decorate A LOT!” says Emily. “We always have a fun scavenger hunt available for the kids to find various themed items while they’re waiting, or to use as a part of their therapy sessions,” she says. “We love using props from the seasonal celebrations to bring more meaning and relationship into our clients’ lives.” Everyone is welcome—even Emily’s menagerie of pets, which come in to visit her young clients. “I’ve brought in several of my chickens, a cat, a bunny, and three of my golden retrievers. Our bearded dragon, Eliza, lives at the clinic. Animals are such healers and connect our empathy to a being. The holidays are magical for many reasons. As a special season for reflecting on life’s many blessings, the students and staff of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School are committed to making a lasting impact in the Yorba Linda community. “All are encouraged to model the school’s patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi, through their servants’ hearts. We believe it is through gratitude for our blessings and a ‘calling’ to serve that we live out our purpose,” explains Allyson Grant, Ministry Chair.

Kindness Campaign

For nearly 25 years, St. Francis of Assisi School has welcomed children of all faiths, from preschool to eighth grade. St. Francis is a tri-parish school, serving Santa Clara de Asis and St. Martin de Porres Catholic Churches in Yorba Linda, and San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Anaheim Hills. St. Francis prioritizes a “whole child” educational approach, in which a child’s spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth are all equally important in developing and inspiring students. Clergy are frequently present on campus, engaging with the students and adding to the inclusive atmosphere. “Forming well-rounded students, excited to embrace each phase of learning, remain important priorities for St. Francis staff,” says Principal Jeannette Lambert. “We consider our parents as partners and pride ourselves on this partnership to ensure each student’s individual goals are met.” Thanks to a diverse, challenging curriculum, eighth-grade students leave St. Francis School fully prepared to flourish in high school and beyond. The majority of St. Francis graduates matriculate into top-tier high schools and universities. A strong, close-knit bond reverberates throughout the campus, ensuring that everyone feels confident they truly belong at St. Francis—and that sentiment is one student and staff work diligently to spread throughout the greater community. The St. Francis family works with several local charitable organizations, including Grandma’s House of Hope, Project Linus, and Ronald McDonald House. Students and their families host a Thanksgiving Food Drive, make cards with messages of hope and encouragement for locally incarcerated individuals, and are organizing a clothing drive for youths released from juvenile hall. On campus, the schoolwide “SFA Kindness Campaign” rewards students for acts of kindness and consideration, allowing them to recognize good deeds amongst their peers.
