MAYOR

Peggy Huang, an attorney, Taiwanese immigrant, and current Mayor of Yorba Linda didn’t grow up thinking about politics. In the elementary grades, she was learning to speak and understand a second language. Librarians were heroes who helped her pronounce words she didn’t understand, which, from her point of view, was a matter of survival. “When you come from another country there’s a pressure to learn English right away or you won’t be able to do anything,

or help yourself if there’s an emergency.” Peggy recalls her mother, who was a nurse in Taiwan, studying English and learning to drive when, at that time, there was no Taiwanese version of the DMV handbook or driver’s test, so she could work as a nurse in California. “My mother is amazing. She taught me the importance of assimilating and learning the language and culture, but to never forget where you came from and who you left behind [in Taiwan].” She admits that being Mayor during a pandemic has its own special challenges, but she admits that the new Yorba Linda Library and Cultural Arts Center is a great accomplishment. “It was a very personal project to me. And I am proud that our city has stayed fiscally sound and has a good foundation for the future.”

BETH HANEY CITY COUNCIL

Dr. Beth Haney navigated tremendous challenges as Mayor of Yorba Linda in 2020. Being a local leader during wildfires and political rallies, social justice protests, and housing issues was an enormously stressful position to be in. As health and safety mandates were rapidly changing, it was her job to disseminate timely and accurate information to residents and businesses and make important choices that would maintain a safe and fiscally strong city, such as city grants to small businesses, during that tumultuous year. Dr. Haney is a founding member and current Co-Chair of the California Mayors Coalition (CMC), a bipartisan group of elected officials making an impact on housing, health equity, and funding in their respective cities. The CMC achieved a major goal last year providing urgently needed direct relief payments to small businesses and is currently working on coordinating improved vaccine distribution. As more people get vaccinated and public health is restored, she is looking forward to fostering a stronger sense of community and connection with residents. “It is hard to predict the future behavior of the CV-19 virus but if it’s appropriate, we will be having our annual 4th of July celebration, Movies in the Park, Yorba Days, and other fun events.” Beth Haney-City Council CONTINUED >

TA R A C A M P B E L L CITY COUNCIL

Good leaders are ones we look up to for guidance, call on in times of trouble, and shine a light on the path ahead. During her tenure as Yorba Linda’s 2019 mayor, Tara Campbell pioneered several programs that are still growing today. Something she is most proud of is the Young Civic Leaders Academy, a six-week nonpartisan program for local high school students to learn more about city government, which she started in 2019 and is entering its 5th session in the spring. “I didn’t want our next generation growing up with disdain towards their local government,” Tara explained. “I wanted to demystify City Hall and show them they can be a part of making their community a better place. One student started a reading program through our library, others have become Ambassadors for our Chamber of Commerce, two created their own business in town, and one just became a City Commissioner!” As mayor Tara was warmly welcomed by residents and religious leaders as she toured every house of worship in the city and took part in many festivals and special events. This year she is really looking forward to ‘Love Yorba Linda,’ a city-wide service day she started to “remind us of the importance of helping one another and strengthening our community.”

TANYA SPENCER HAS SHOWN HERSELF TO BE A ROLE MODEL OF BRAVERY AND STEADFAST DETERMINATION, BUT SHE DIDN’T ALWAYS SEE HERSELF THAT WAY. Like anyone, she had her low points in life and was lifted up by women who made her feel that anything was possible when you believe in yourself. Tanya was born in Germany with a brother 18 months older than her and her twin sister. When Tanya was just four years old, her mother, Doreen, moved the family back to England from

Dilys taught me to look in the mirror every day and tell myself how beautiful I was and that I was capable of doing anything I so wished,” recalls Tanya. “I really didn't believe in myself very much back then, and Dilys taught me to do just that.” Lately, Tanya is working towards her pilot’s license. Last year, her husband Robbie showed his support and encouragement by finding the right plane for her, a little C-150, to resume taking flight lessons. “I’m pretty accomplished in the world of skydiving as an instructor, examiner, a safety and training advisor, and senior rigger.

Redefining “Success” as Business Owners CABOT & MAIN WALKS THE TALK THAT BUSINESS CONSULTING IS FOR MAKING A LIFE THAT YOU LOVE.

THE BEAUTY OF SUCCESS IS THAT IT CAN MEAN SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR EVERY SINGLE PERSON. For business partners and friends, Ashley Meripol and Katie Toscano, joining forces to start their business, Cabot & Main, was about more than just a goal of building a successful business together. They wanted to live a life that allows them to take joy in what they do, but also take joy in their time away from the job while continuing to grow as people every day. Growing

Stripes of a Warrior President: Mindy Mitchell Board Member: Tara Tobin Stripes of a Warrior President Mindy Mitchell, and Board Member, Tara Tobin, have been nominated as Women Leaders in our community for a good reason! According to one nominator of the pair, “They are amazing and help so many cancer warriors, including myself.” Stripes of a Warrior has successfully raised over $600,000 for families fighting cancer financially. Their board is full of women who have personally been affected by cancer, either themselves, their children, or other family members. The team is full of the “most caring and giving women, who know firsthand what it’s like to hear the words ‘you have cancer," commented another voter of the pair. Their goal is “to be examples to the youth of today and help empower them by teaching them how to give back and help others in need.” They are honored to be selected as women leaders, but their mission to pay cancer patients' bills could not be done without community support. Having the opportunity to use their personal cancer experiences to help others has been the biggest reward. They hope to continue to do this for a long time, and with the help of this community, they know they can help many more Cancer Warriors. Learn more at stripesofawarrior.org!

Cora’s Crafts Cora Davenport Seven year old Cora Davenport was nominated for her non-profit, Cora's Crafts, whose purpose is to spread cheer by sending a smile to people, one bracelet at a time. Cora is dedicated to raising awareness and support for anyone battling cancer or chronic illnesses. “Cora was a bright light during one of the darkest times in my life,” according to Alysa, who was one of the many who nominated her. Cora's Crafts involves local businesses and children who donate items to the packages she sends, to empower and inspire them to continue helping others. Recently, Cora completed a project enlisting a local kindergarten class who helped make 30 necklaces that were shipped to two children’s hospitals in Florida. Cora’s mom not only taught her the craft of bracelet-making but also “how to pass a smile on to someone who might be in need. Cora’s mom is always rooting for her, and that has helped Cora do the same for others.” Cora says she “feels powerful!” about being nominated. She is excited to continue to grow her non-profit, so grateful for all the people and friends she has made, and excited for all the future holds. Read more at corascrafts.org.
