Before everything gets crazy and we start shopping for all of the people on our gift list, we want to take this time to pause and reflect. This year has been an incredible journey with all of you, and we are grateful that we get to create this magazine every month and connect with you and your family. Thank you for reading Lifestyle, and I hope you enjoy our articles about family, food, health, fitness, charities, community, local businesses, and business leaders. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community, for this magazine would not be possible without them. Thank you for the community service you do, and for every time you recycle something or play a small part in keeping our city clean and thriving. We are so proud of where we live, and we know it wouldn’t be the same without each and every one of you.

and personal life begin to get blurred. From accidentally answering personal phone calls from family and friends with our business greeting of "Thank you for calling Car Medic," to trying to find other things to talk about other than business at family dinners. Being owners of small businesses is something to be thankful for regardless of the challenges that appear before us. It has definitely tested our family bond while bringing us closer at the same time.” Through the lens of a business owner, this year has sure been a bumpy ride. From COVID to civil unrest and beyond, it seems as if the year 2020 could only have been created in a science fiction novel! Car Medic pushed past challenges to end 2020 with class, by leaping into a new location, hiring more team members, and offering custom paint jobs using House of Kolors paint, which really stands out from typical automotive finishes, always with fair pricing to help out-of-pocket paying customers. “We find so much to be thankful for,” says Devinn. “The moral support of family has been critical, and of course we are also thankful to still be in business. Finally, we are thankful for our loyal customers in the community who have continued to bring us business and referrals. We love being in Yorba Linda and to build relationships here. We are going to keep looking forward.” Car Medic is located in the Savi Ranch shopping center at 22911 Savi Ranch Parkway, Yorba Linda. 714-984-3795. carmedicautobody.com

Feeling Good About Yourself

WHAT BETTER GIFT TO GIVE YOURSELF THIS HOLIDAY SEASON THAN TO FEEL GOOD IN YOUR SKIN.

Tis’ the season to be thankful. As we plan our Thanksgiving dinners and admire the changing leaves, it is customary that we express our gratitude for the wonderful people and things in our lives. As you reflect on these blessings, take the time to look inward and ask yourself: When was the last time I showed myself how thankful I am? Practicing gratefulness is one of the easiest forms of selfcare. As we show our bodies just how thankful we are, we

“You know you have done a good job when people state that you look great but have no idea that anything was done to you.”

contribute to feelings of well-being and self-worth which have long-term effects. It’s time we start viewing our skin-care as self-care by visiting Skin Nirvana Med Spa. At this top-notch facility, you will receive treatments and products your skin will be thankful for. Skin Nirvana is a physician-led cosmetic center in Anaheim Hills that has been in operation since 2005. Dr. Richard Han, the medical director at Skin Nirvana, and his staff will develop a comprehensive skin care plan to provide more beautiful, and blemish-free skin. They offer the full gamut of medical-grade skin care products you can’t buy at retail stores and the latest laser technology to treat sun spots, age spots, and freckles. They offer a variety of solutions for skin laxity, pores, texture, cellulite, and even extreme wrinkles and acne scarring with total skin resurfacing. Patients travel from all over for the oneand-only artistry of the placement of Botox and dermal fillers by Dr. Han. "You are not paying for the filler or Botox,” says Dr. Han. “You are paying for the artistry. You know you have done a good job when people state that you look great but have no idea that anything was done to you." At the center, you will receive a personalized skin analysis and a plan for what you want to improve in yourself. Whether you are looking for a relaxing facial, skin tightening, Botox, or dermal fillers, Skin Nirvana has a treatment you will love without the hard up-sell. Beyond treatments and products, Skin Nirvana presents a serene, spa-like environment. The staff goes above and beyond to offer outstanding customer service and attention to detail which extends to the safety and cleanliness of the center. At Skin Nirvana, you can receive treatments that leave your skin smooth and supple all while relaxing at their peaceful, clean, and inviting facility. As you sit around the table this Thanksgiving, remember to show yourself how grateful you are for the skin you are in. Make Thanksgiving a state of mind this season by visiting Skin Nirvana to receive treatments and products your skin will be thankful for. 14

“I am so thankful for everything at Park Vista," says Skilled Nursing Resident Anna Fulmer. "The service is excellent. It’s very clean. And the staff is efficient; if I press the call light, I always get a timely response.” Park Vista is always kept fresh, comfortable, and relevant. The Assisted Living Center, for example, is currently undergoing a face-lift. Private apartments are receiving a crisp coat of paint and new carpet. The activity center, library, theater, and lounge have already been redesigned and redecorated with all new furniture and artwork. The living room, which was underused by residents, is being repurposed into a new bistro and bar where they can socialize or just hang out. “I am so grateful to the staff here for taking such good care of me and my dog, Teddy," says Dorothy Carter, an Assisted Living Resident. "I can’t single out any particular staff member since they all greet us both so warmly. They always say hello and ask about our day. Teddy enjoys the extra attention.” For three years in a row, Park Vista has been certified as a “Great Place to Work.” In their surveys, employees cited the company’s strong commitment to helping them be successful – supporting them with all CONTINUED >

necessary supplies, equipment, technology, and training. Whatever role they play in the community, the employees know they’re valued. “I’m thankful for my supportive and understanding supervisors – especially during these difficult times," says Seth Castillo of the Food and Beverage Team. Park Vista staff members say they feel good about their contributions and often go beyond their stated caretaker roles. They’ve found that small investments in time and effort always earn double-digit returns – in joy and gratitude. “When the beauty salons were closed, I told Jessica Todd that I was embarrassed of my hair color, so she colored and washed my hair and helped me style it really pretty," shares Suja Kim, an Assisted Living Resident." Jessica and I would talk and it made me so happy to have her.” Residents and their families have expressed their heartfelt trust in Park Vista. They’re especially grateful for the extra measures the staff is taking to ensure that COVID-19 remains outside the community. Well-versed in CDC and local government guidelines, the team is hyper-vigilant,

adhering to safety standards that exceed government recommendations. Though all agree that staying distant from loved ones is challenging, a good dose of gratitude helps lighten the load – and there’s plenty to go around! Dr. Fred Nelson, a Skilled Nursing Resident, offered high praise for all the community has done for the residents. “Park Vista has done a great job keeping residents safe from the virus and keeping families informed of the facts. The team is truly doing the best they can."

OLD DOGS, NEW HOMES Diesel

Yorba Linda Lifestyle | November 2020

NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH. WE ARE CELEBRATING WITH FOUR OF LIVE LOVE ANIMAL RESCUE’S SENIOR DOGS.

WHY ADOPT A SENIOR DOG? Their personalities vary just as much as younger pups, but a lot of our seniors share a few traits that make them particularly good family pets. The rescued dogs of Live Love Animal Rescue are housed in loving foster homes. We can give you extensive information to find the right match for your household, which can take some uncertainty out of adopting the

laid-back senior dog of your dreams. We provide comprehensive medical care before placing dogs for adoption, so adopters can focus on enjoying their new furry family member. Here, four senior rescue dogs share their journeys along the way to adoption. When we met Diesel (left), he could barely walk, dragging one front leg behind him due to a large cancerous mass. Diesel’s family had surrendered him to our city’s animal shelter as they could not afford his medical care. They tearfully called him “the best dog ever” and hoped the shelter could help him. We answered the shelter staff’s request to rescue him and spoil him for a few days in a hospice home. Still, upon examining Diesel’s swollen leg, Live Love founder Emily said, “I think we can take this off!” and a life-saving leg amputation was performed, funded in part by the generosity of The Grey Muzzle Organization. Diesel now walks and trots with ease, and we hope to reunite Diesel with his former family.

MAXI AGE 11 Maxi (right) came to us when her owner passed away. A total lap dog, Maxi jumped right into the arms of the toddler in her foster home for some well-supervised cuddles and love. Next, Maxi went straight to the vet for a checkup. We are arranging to have several rotting teeth extracted, with her medical care sponsored in part by a Karen T. Hilburn Trust grant that benefits senior dogs in need. This spunky little diva will soon be getting cozy in an adoptive home where she can enjoy a carefree retirement.

WALDO AGE 8 Like Maxi, Waldo’s previous owner passed away. He had some medical issues that caused quite a bit of discomfort, including arthritis, rotting teeth, and skin problems. Our veterinarian removed 13 teeth, treated his skin with a medicated bath, and prescribed medication to treat the arthritic pain. Now that he is comfortable, his foster family is learning that he’s a kisser! Waldo loves showing the humans who saved him all the affection he has in his heart! Whoever adopts him will receive the love of a senior dog who is grateful for a second chance. THEY, WHO ARE SO FRESH FROM GOD, LOVE US.” We were fortunate to chat with

JULIAN AND JEREMIAH ARZOLA SHARE WHAT THEY ARE MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR.

Julian, 9, Jeremiah, 5, and their mom, Jennifer about what they are thankful for. However big or small your wishes are for the holidays and approaching New Year, we sincerely hope you can embrace simplicity and innocence like the thankful heart of a child.

THANKFULL KIDS

JULIAN & JEREMIAH’S THANKFUL LIST

Family. Both boys said mom and dad are the number one people to be thankful for because they are loved, make them food, and keep them safe.

Bike rides. Since Jeremiah got his training wheels off, he is thrilled to be riding free along with his mom, dad, and big brother.

Special birthday surprises. Getting a doughnut for breakfast in the shape of a number 5 was a special surprise for Jeremiah on his 5th birthday.

Books. Julian is thankful for the adventure and escape that books provide, especially his favorite, the “I Survived” non-fiction series.

Basketball and their teams. Both boys agreed they are thankful for their coaches and teams who show up to play together.

+ “WOMAN OF THE YEAR”

JULIE LIM OF OC WINE MART HAS A STRONG YEAR-END FINISH WITH AWARDS AND THE STRONG SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY.

HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THE

+ OWNER OC WINE MART

HOLIDAYS AT THE STORE?

+ “SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR”

tastings during the holidays with some popular brands

We hope to do some in-store as well as virtual wine like Caymus, Silver Oak, Grgich Hills, and Far Niente. We're stocking up on special holiday wines such as Pinot Noir for Thanksgiving and Magnum bottles for holiday gifting. We're gearing up for our same-day and overnight Gift Delivery Service through our website. TELL US ABOUT THE AWARDS OC WINE MART HAS WON THIS YEAR. We had a good run this year with awards. It started with "Small Business of the Month" for January by Aliso Viejo, "Small Business of the Year" for District 68 by Assemblyman Steven Choi, "Best Alcohol by the Taste of Orange," and "Best Wine Selection by LA Times OC Reader's Choice.” One that took me by surprise was being named "Woman of the Year" for the 46th District by Congressman Luis Correa. WHAT COMMUNITY OUTREACH ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? We're very involved with other local business owners in Yorba Linda. We must stick together and help each other in order to survive. We show our gratitude to first responders such as Firefighters and Law Enforcement by offering them free breakfast burritos or sandwiches on special days. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR RIGHT NOW? We're thankful for our family and our amazing team who have been troopers throughout this time. This year has been a great challenge for most businesses including ours. We're extremely grateful for the on-going support of our community. During the lock-down, they pivoted along with us as we moved to take-out, wine deliveries, and virtual tastings. It is only because of them that we are surviving the pandemic and are still in business today.
