FEATURING SMILE DOCTORS OF WOODSTOCK, ECOLOGIE VINTAGE, AND JAZZ MUSICIAN PETER PONZOL

LIFESTYLE LETTER

This month's issue includes exciting pieces on the theme of style featuring Ecologie Vintage, Smile Doctors of Woodstock, and jazz musician Peter Ponzol. Style is constantly evolving. In an era where new fashions cycle in and out of stores on a weekly basis, it is more important now than ever to define our individual styles. Do you gravitate towards light and airy neutrals or colorful eclectic pieces or somewhere in between? The more we define our style, the more we can avoid trendy pieces that last a couple of months and end up buried in our closets, waiting to be decluttered. Just as important as defining our style is determining which fabric will last the longest and feel the best. Commonly used textiles like polyester, rayon, nylon, and acrylic are cheap to make and never last longer than a few years. While they may be cheaper, it's best to buy a piece that is well-made and will last a lifetime. Fabrics to look for: 100% cotton, linen, hemp, and thick denim.

Dr. Farah Kar and Dr. Sunya Sweeney are the orthodontists behind Smile Doctors of Woodstock and nationally recognized for their innovative approach to patient care. They are not only female doctors in a male-dominated specialty, but they are bringing vital technology and patient care practices to Cherokee County.
Dr. Kar and Dr. Sweeney take great care to customize patient outcomes as opposed to a cookie cutter approach to orthodontic care. One of Dr. Kar’s and Dr. Sweeney’s biggest passions are customizing and “designing smiles.” Where most orthodontists come from a science background, Dr. Kar’s background is in fine arts and architecture, which she integrates into every aspect of her practice and patient care. This results in a personalized orthodontic treatment taken to another level.
"We really focus on all the principles that come with form and function to make sure that the design of your smile is unique to you and your face. The nuances of a smile are about more than just alignment and how teeth fit together. Designing a smile that is unique to each patient is a core part of their practice.”
Another way Smile Doctors of Woodstock personalize care for their patients is by utilizing advanced technology. Engagement is a vital factor in any orthodontic practice and technology allows for a predictable and convenient experience. Smile Doctors of Woodstock use the newest technology to make checking in and
assessing progress a breeze. Any ambiguity that comes with the typical treatment duration is eliminated with the use of an exciting piece of technology called a “scanbox.” Scanboxes allow patients to take detailed pictures of their teeth using an intraoral smartphone attachment which is easy and comfortable for patients. Dr. Kar and Dr. Sweeney receive the scans on a weekly basis and provide patients with feedback and any answers to questions they may have. Prioritizing doctor-patient communication makes the entire process smoother and more enjoyable, especially for young patients.
If someone needs a break for a vacation, for example, Dr. Kar builds that into the treatment plan. This technology and level of remote care also allows them to treat their patients out of the state or country for situations such as traveling abroad or college. This level of customization for each patient’s needs makes Smile Doctors of Woodstock an unparalleled resource.
Pain and discomfort are common worries for anyone pursuing orthodontic treatment. Most orthodontists today still use appliances that are outdated instead of prioritizing comfort and efficiency that is backed by research. Smile Doctors of Woodstock focus on creating a transformative experience by ensuring patients are receiving effective care while considering comfort. Dr. Kar and Dr. Sweeney stand out not only locally, but nationally as leaders in advanced orthodontic treatment. Dr. Kar is an Align Technology faculty member and teaches fellow orthodontists in the community how to use Invisalign accurately.
For patients with sensitivities to light, smell, volume, etc., Smile Doctors of Woodstock offer unique in-office experience to ensure comfort and accessibility. Dr. Kar and Dr. Sweeney have patients who drive hours to see a doctor committed to truly accommodating every patient. Dr. Kar explains the issue with most orthodontist offices: “They have one long bay. It's loud, it's bright. There's no option to do anything different. Having that flexibility here in Woodstock has made a huge difference for some of our patients who require special accommodations.”
Much of Smile Doctor’s daily planning goes into how they can create a positive patient experience. “How are we going to make sure our patients feel seen, they feel supported, they feel loved in that short time that we have with them in our practice?” Dr. Kar explains. There’s never a patient that is just another name on a schedule.
Smile Doctors of Woodstock philosophy is that patients shouldn’t have to decide on a treatment plan based on cost. It should be about what tool is best for each patient’s needs and CONTINUED >

providing the best outcome. By specializing in Invisalign for children and adults and other advanced technologies, Smile Doctors of Woodstock set themselves apart not only in the scope of their offerings, but in the cost of treatment. By accepting numerous dental insurance plans and flexible payment options, their focus is to make treatment affordable and accessible for all.
Dr. Kar and Dr. Sweeney understand how our smiles affect all aspects of our lives, from school to work to relationships. They get messages from former patients often, highlighting how their treatment changed their confidence and allowed them to achieve their goals.

As busy moms, Dr. Kar and Dr. Sweeney understand the importance of efficiency and quality, both personally and professionally. Dr. Kar says, “I want to be the best doctor I can be so I can be the best mom I can be.” They serve their community and the families in their practice with the most respectful, thorough, and customized care so families can have one less thing to worry about. At Smile Doctors in Woodstock, patients can rest assured that they are receiving top-notch treatment.

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO REFRESH OLD ITEMS IN OUR CLOSETS?
Take your items to a sewist. Having something fitted to your shape can completely change your wardrobe and how you feel about your style. Clothing is made for the masses, but your shape is unique, and your clothing should show that off. We have a seamstress come to our store, and it has made the biggest difference for our customers.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STYLES OR TYPES OF GARMENTS THAT NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE?
Wearing what makes you feel at your best never goes out of style for me. Clothing has such a power to show who you are without saying a word. Some days, I feel girly and want to wear a dress from the

70s, and I feel like I have stepped back in time. Other days, I have on a band tee that their song has been on repeat for me, and it just makes me feel full of life. My current obsession is anything floral; it just feels right, and I am not going to second guess something that feels that way. I encourage everyone to find things that make you feel your best, no matter what.
HOW DO YOU SOURCE/CURATE YOUR SHOP’S ITEMS?
Our clothing is from everyone and everywhere! We buy from the public every day, so most of what you see is a significant reflection of our community. We also shop estate sales and source from many places around Atlanta. Our staff is amazing at picking items for our store; if it wasn’t for them and their diverse styles, we wouldn’t have as great a selection.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PIECES YOU OWN?

I have a closet full of things I will never let go of. My closet has my prom dress I wore to prom with my husband; it has my first vintage dress I ever bought, and concert t-shirts that I wore during some of the best nights of my life with my friends. One thing that I have learned through owning Ecologie Vintage is that clothing is very personal. It goes through life with you, and not everyone will know the story, but it will always keep that memory for you.

This book, considered a classic, follows 11-year-old Anne Shirley and her adventures after moving in with siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The Cuthberts had reached out to an orphanage in need of a boy who could work around the farm, and they would provide housing and food. In a shocking turn of events, they end up with Anne, who is adventurous, imaginative, and quick to share how she feels to whoever is listening. Although written in 1908

and regarded as a children’s story, it has elements that will always apply to being a girl regardless of what age you are. With so many characters and relationships, the story is relevant for readers of any age. Anne of Green Gables is a story about found family, female friendship, first love, and the importance of staying true to oneself. It truly deserves a high ranking. The dialogue flows seamlessly, enabling the reader to fully comprehend the characters through their words. The characters are well-rounded and realistic, even those that aren’t the main characters. Anne might be one of the most likable young women characters in literature. She’s imperfect and makes mistakes, but is quick to fix and learn from them. She encourages those around her to be creative, longs for more from life, and is quick to befriend
someone she considers “a kindred spirit.” The book falls short of a perfect five ranking because it leaves the reader wanting more. The good thing is that this book is the first in a series, so it doesn’t have to be over yet, with eight books in total. To see how the characters are portrayed on screen, you can check out a movie with the same name that came out in 1985 and a show on Netflix based on the series called Anne With An E, which comprises three seasons. I suggest that everyone grab this book and fall in love with Anne, The Cuthberts, and the rest of their stories. Parents of young kids can enjoy reading this book aloud to their children to work through the more difficult topics of death, religion, and societal expectations. Anne of Green Gables is a classic for a reason with lessons that everyone can gain wisdom from.

Braids to Keep You Chic All Year Long
Braids are a great way to add style and uniqueness to your hair style rotation and have been a staple in hair styles dating back to the 3500 B.C. This historical hairstyle is here to stay, so we wanted to share some go-to impressive looks.

Part hair down the center. Create pull-through braids on each side of the head. Tie elastic at the end of the braids to create a ponytail at the nape of the neck. For extra volume in the buns, tease the hair in the ponytail before twisting it into a bun. Secure with hair pins and... Voilà!

Place a bandana on the forehead and tie it in the back. Create as many braids as desired in the back of the head, teasing the ends to avoid using elastics.

Part the top half of the hair in two sections. Create fishtail braids (or braids of choice) and tie them together in the back of the hair. Add a fashion accessory around a ponytail for a little extra fun!
