American Idol Slater Nalley shares from his heart
LIFE + CULTURE
WOODSTOCK CELEBRATES MUCH ABOUT COMMUNITY
LOCAL SERVICES
SPREADING SUNSHINE TO A WOODSTOCK FAMILY
FEBRUARY 2026

February is the perfect time to reflect on what it truly means to love where we live. For us, loving local means championing the small businesses, families, artists, and service providers who shape the heartbeat of Woodstock every single day.
You now have two deeply experienced local publishers leading Woodstock City Lifestyle We don’t just work here. We live here. We’re in your neighborhoods, walking the same downtown streets, and raising our families alongside yours.

Lisa Thibault brings over a decade of publishing excellence through owning Roswell, East Cobb, and Decatur City Lifestyle, where she’s built deep relationships and a legacy of storytelling that uplifts and unites. She’s joined by Chicka Elloy, who not only owns and produces Canton City Lifestyle into its third successful year but also lives right here in Woodstock. Together, we’re not just watching Cherokee County grow; we’re helping drive it forward with passion, care, and a deep love for this community.
Loving local goes beyond shopping or dining. It means calling your trusted local plumber, booking the landscaper who knows your yard, and choosing your favorite family-run orthodontist instead of a big-box brand. It means choosing with intention, investing in people, and giving with heart.
This issue celebrates those choices. It’s a thank you to the mom-and-pop shops, the early risers, the creators, and the community builders. If you are a business, nonprofit, or storyteller with something meaningful to share, we would love to talk. This publication is for Woodstock, by Woodstock, and your story matters here.
At the heart of this issue is a moving feature on Slater Alley, a Top 5 American Idol alumnus. His story begins in a Georgia classroom, where a poem for his teacher became a song honoring her late son. It’s a powerful reminder that love, creativity, and healing often intersect in the most unexpected ways.
Here’s to the storytelling of Woodstock. To loving locals with purpose. To pride, connection, and the stories that make us who we are.

A Voice That Heals, a Story That Resonates
ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALBRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Before he ever stepped onto the American Idol stage, Slater Nalley sat across from his teacher with a song that helped her grieve, remember, and breathe again. That moment changed everything.

“At the end of the day, I am thankful to be here.”—Slater Nalley
Music had always been part of Slater’s life, but it was never just a hobby. It was how he processed what it meant to be different, how he found purpose, and how he learned to stay grounded in who he was. While his peers were focused on sports, Slater was drawn to musicals, songwriting, and learning piano by ear. Being different was not always easy, but he kept showing up for the parts of himself that felt most true.
“I’ve had some really tough times that many of my peers don’t know about. Ones where I questioned a lot of things in life like what my purpose was and things no kid should really feel,” Slater admits. “I want my music to spread happiness, but have room for tears, too.” His goal is to put songs into the world that say, “Hey, you are not alone.”
Raised just outside of Atlanta with three younger sisters, Slater found comfort at his family’s property in South Georgia. That is where he would hunt, fish, ride horses, and talk about life with his dad. In those quiet moments surrounded by red clay and wide open sky, he could imagine a future that made sense, even if others could not see it yet.
When Slater’s high school English teacher, Roswell resident Michelle Davis, lost her son Carter and his friend Natalie Henderson, she wrote something deeply personal and shared it with him. “When I asked Slater how he takes a poem and turns it into a song, I never imagined he would have interest in working on it and make it his own...all honoring Carter.”
Slater did more than simply turn words into lyrics. He listened, felt, and crafted Traces of You.
CONTINUED >

“To have my son live on in song is a priceless gift, one that breathes such joy in a place that is so sad. My family is eternally grateful,” Michelle shares.
She believed the message could resonate with others. “I imagined that anyone who had lost someone…whether they’ve passed or not, but a person no longer in their life, could relate to this song because we often search for those little fingerprints our loved ones left behind.”
Michelle is part of a group called Warrior Moms, bonded by loss and strengthened by faith. Their message is simple. Grieve like a mother. Survive like a warrior.
Healing also happens in quiet spaces. At Roswell Area Park on Woodstock Road, there is a memorial bench created to honor Carter and Natalie.
Michelle says, “In these spaces, we connect to our kids and pray for comfort. And like Slater’s lyrics, anyone sitting on this bench or listening to ‘Traces of You’ hopefully believes this to be true: ‘everytime I see a bird fly by, I’m reminded that you’re answering our prayers’ and for me...it is everything.”
Moments like these shaped Slater’s understanding of what music can do. It is not just about performing. It is about connecting.
As he continued writing, Slater started sharing songs online. One of his videos reached more than five million views. That opened doors, but it is the people behind the songs that keep him grounded.
In 2024, he earned a Top 5 spot on American Idol. His sound, influenced by Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, and John Prine, felt familiar yet fresh. His voice, soulful and raspy, seemed older than his years. That authenticity captured national attention.
He is now signed with Warner Music Nashville and Play It Again Music, the label founded by hit songwriter Dallas Davidson.

His first release, Foolish Pride, a song he wrote at just 15, is raw, emotional, and honest. It explores what it means to face your own flaws, to understand the part you play in heartbreak, and to be brave enough to admit it.
“At the end of the day, I am thankful to be here,” Slater says. “I am thankful that God has put me here and I am thankful that I have been in such a fortunate situation to pursue what I love to do, and I’ve met the right people.”
His story is not about chasing fame. It is about choosing purpose. And sometimes, that starts with one song and the courage to share it.

How local nonprofits lead with love, uplift communities, and create lasting impact through generosity.
In the heart of downtown Woodstock, Georgia, Limitless Disability Services has become more than just a day program—it’s a welcoming community where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are seen, supported, and encouraged to grow. What began in 2021 as a small initiative to meet a clear need for meaningful day services quickly blossomed into a trusted resource for local families seeking inclusion, connection, and personal development for their loved ones.
At its core, Limitless is built on a belief that every individual deserves independence and a sense of belonging in a safe, loving environment. The organization’s thoughtful programs are designed to empower participants to build social and life skills through engaging activities, community outings, creative expression, and supportive group settings. From exploring art, music, and crafts to learning important practical skills like safe community navigation and shopping etiquette, the day programs are tailored to help each person flourish in their own way.
What truly sets Limitless apart is the way it honors the full humanity of every participant. Staff emphasize small group settings and individualized attention, ensuring that each person’s goals and strengths are recognized and celebrated. Weekly community outings—whether a nature walk, social event, or local excursion—create opportunities for meaningful inclusion and foster authentic connections that extend far beyond the program’s walls.

Family involvement and community support are woven into the fabric of Limitless’s success. By embracing those they serve as an extended family, the organization not only supports adults with special needs but also uplifts caregivers and loved ones who count on this vibrant program for connection, growth, and peace of mind. As Limitless continues to evolve, its heart remains the same: helping every participant live with dignity, joy, and a sense of possibility that truly feels, well, limitless

Residents of Benton House Senior Living communities including Woodstock across the country stepped up—literally—for a meaningful cause, collectively walking an impressive 31,923 miles throughout 2025. The total distance equals circling the globe more than once, transforming everyday walks into powerful support for local charities.
Sixteen Benton House communities participated in the annual Benton House Walking Club Challenge, with each location averaging more than 2,100 miles—the approximate distance from New York City to Las Vegas—demonstrating how consistent, small efforts can create extraordinary results.
Beyond the numbers, the challenge highlights the importance of staying active and connected at every age.

“Staying mobile and active as we age is incredibly important,” said Christian Stringfellow, Community Relations Director. “Our walking club keeps residents moving, laughing, and connecting. Knowing every mile helps others makes each step even more rewarding—and the annual check-presentation celebration is always a highlight.”
At Benton House of Woodstock Senior Living, the miles walked translated directly into local impact. This year’s donation was proudly presented to the Hope Foundation, reinforcing the community’s commitment to blending wellness, purpose, and generosity. For residents, the challenge offered more than physical benefits—it fostered camaraderie, motivation, and a shared sense of giving back.
The Walking Club Challenge exemplifies Benton House’s dedication to enriching senior life through meaningful experiences. By encouraging movement, connection, and charitable giving, the initiative proves that no matter the pace, every step has the power to make a difference.

Established by Circle of Friends, Inc., Flourish Café was created as “a place to gather and grow,” offering not just great food and drinks but meaningful opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. What began in The Circuit Woodstock is gained more space in Canton.

By connecting people over good food and conversation, the café helps build confidence, community ties, and a sense of pride in every step of the journey.
Generous support from local leaders and funding through the American Rescue Plan Act helped bring Flourish Café to life, providing the equipment and space needed to welcome visitors and staff alike.
Whether you’re stopping by for your morning coffee or lingering over lunch, a visit to Flourish Café means supporting a mission that goes far beyond the café counter—one cup at a time.

Refuge Rescue is a powerful example of how compassion and community can change lives—one dog at a time. Located in Woodstock and serving surrounding North Georgia communities, this volunteer-driven nonprofit is dedicated to rescuing dogs from overcrowded shelters and unsafe situations, giving them a second chance at life and love.
At its core, Refuge Rescue is about people helping animals, and neighbors helping neighbors. The organization operates through a foster-based model, meaning every dog is welcomed into a home environment where they receive individualized care, medical attention, and the patience needed to heal and thrive. This approach not only prepares dogs for adoption, but also helps ensure thoughtful, lasting matches with families in the community.

What makes Refuge Rescue especially meaningful is its reliance on local support. Foster families, volunteers, donors, and adopters all play vital roles in the rescue process. From transporting dogs and hosting adoption events to spreading awareness and opening their homes, community members come together to create a safety net for animals who need it most.
Refuge Rescue’s impact reaches far beyond adoption days. By educating the public, supporting responsible pet ownership, and building strong relationships with local partners, the organization strengthens the community as a whole. Every successful adoption represents not just a saved life, but a reminder of what’s possible when compassion leads the way.
In a world that often moves too fast, Refuge Rescue slows things down—choosing carconnection, and commitment. Their work embodies the true spirit of local love: giving back, lifting others up, and creating brighter futures for both animals and the people who welcome them home.

As part of Woodstock’s 150th Anniversary celebration, the historic Dean House welcomed the public for a rare and meaningful tour during the History Cherokee Holiday Tour of Homes. This special event invited residents and visitors alike to step inside some of Cherokee County’s most distinctive and historically significant homes, each thoughtfully decorated for the holiday season and rich with stories of the past.
For generations, the Dean House has stood as a symbol of Woodstock’s beginnings and enduring spirit. “The Dean House represents the very heart of our city’s history,” said Mayor Michael Caldwell. “It stands as a reminder that Woodstock’s story has always been one of resilience, community, and care. These values continue to ring true in our city 150 years later.”
In honor of this milestone, Mayor Caldwell formally recognized the Dean House’s 150th anniversary with an official proclamation. The proclamation celebrated not only the historic home itself, but also the generations of Woodstock residents whose dedication and stewardship have preserved the property as a treasured community landmark.
Opening the Dean House to the public offered a rare opportunity to connect with the city’s roots while celebrating the holiday season. As Woodstock reflects on 150 years of growth and community, the Dean House stands as a living reminder that honoring the past helps shape a stronger future.
Celebrating creativity, storytelling, and young filmmakers shaping the future of media through Film Festival

Follow students of today and tomorrow as Cherokee County celebrates the power of storytelling, creativity, and young filmmakers shaping the future of media.
The Cherokee Office of Economic Development is again partnering with Cherokee County School District to host the Cherokee Student Film Festival, a showcase of original films created by talented students from high schools across the county.
Last year, more than 23 student-made films were screened at Woodstock Arts, drawing over 200 attendees who came to cheer on the next generation of creators. The festival provides a unique opportunity for students to apply classroom learning to real-world projects, developing skills in creativity, collaboration, and technical filmmaking.
“We greatly appreciate the valuable partner we have in the COED and its collaboration with our Career Pathway film and video program teachers to make this festival happen,” said Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis. “Our students are learning, growing and achieving more in our classrooms than they could anywhere else through opportunities like this competition.”
Mark your calendars for March 24 at 6 p.m. and join the community in celebrating creativity, innovation, and the inspiring work of our local student filmmakers.

Blending the power of compassion, creativity, and community in children’s lives

Sunshine on a Ranney Day (SOARD) is a nonprofit, owned and operated buy local Woodstock resdients Holly and Peter Ranney. SOARD transforms the lives of children with special needs and longterm illnesses through thoughtfully designed home renovations, at no cost to the family. Each project focuses on creating wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, dream bedrooms, and in-home therapy spaces that offer functionality and inspiration. Last fall, Sunshine on a Ranney Day had a special renovation for eleven-year-old Woodstock resident Leland, a vibrant young boy with spina bifida. Despite his complex medical journey, Leland's joyful spirit and love for sports, especially golf, shine through. Last summer, Leland joined SOARD at their annual golf tournament, Sunshine on a Ranney Fairway, where he quickly became a favorite. Many players invited him to tee off on their behalf, and he happily rose to the occasion, bringing both heart and skill to the game. Leland's mom describes him as "in the middle," not quite able to join typical sports teams but always eager to participate. Leland approaches life with unwavering determination, remarkable resilience, and a strong desire to do things independently.

As Sunshine on a Ranney Day prepared to create a fully accessible bathroom for Leland that will meet his complex medical needs and reflect his bright spirit, his family is deeply grateful. His mother, Nicole, shares that this renovation is not only practical but profoundly meaningful, saying it is "truly life-changing for our family." Nicole continues, "Knowing our son will have a space that supports his independence and honors his dignity brings so much hope for the future. We're overwhelmed with gratitude for the kindness of our community and God's provision in this season of our lives."
Every Sunshine on a Ranney Day renovation is more than just a construction project. It is a powerful blend of compassion, creativity, and community. For the families SOARD serves, these transformations offer freedom, dignity, and the opportunity for their children to thrive in spaces designed specifically for their needs. When eight-year-old Emery received a custom therapy room, her father reflected on what it meant for their family, noting the space would give her a new level of independence; "She is going to love the level of independence that's going to come from this.”
The same sentiment was echoed by Hudson's parents, a young boy living with Gaucher Disease Type 2, who received a bathroom makeover that relocated the bathroom to the first floor of their home. With the new setup, Hudson's room, bathroom, and therapy play area are all on the same level, an intentional design that eliminates the strain of navigating

“I was just really relieved about how much easier this is going to make it for us and Hudson.”
stairs multiple times a day. "Instead of having to climb two flights of stairs to get him to a bathroom just for his regular needs and showering," they can now do it on one floor, his mother explained, "I was just really relieved about how much easier this is going to make it for us and Hudson."
For families like Hudson's, Emery's, and Leland's, these renovations don't just improve a home; they also enhance the quality of life, helping children live more independently, with comfort and joy built into every detail. Sunshine on a Ranney Day's mission is a testament to what is possible when compassion meets design, creating spaces that not only meet medical needs but also nurture confidence, joy, and a sense of belonging.

“Knowing our son will have a space that supports his independence and honors his dignity brings so much hope for the future.”
