SHARING HOPE IN RACHEL’S MEMORY

Woodstock couple Larry and Donna Aber recently celebrated their daughter with a big family dinner, just as they do each year in honor of her birthday. She would have turned 41 years old in October. In 2008, the Abers lost their daughter, Rachel, after a valiant fight against ovarian cancer, but her legacy still thrives today throughout the community and beyond as the family tirelessly works to spread awareness - and give HOPE - to others who might face this devastating disease. “Rachel was always a healthy, active child and young woman. She excelled in school and loved to dance,” says Larry and Donna Aber. “We were so proud of the life she was building. A devoted Bulldogs fan, she graduated from the University of Georgia in 2005 and found a fulfilling job she was passionate about soon after.” Despite having a regular exercise routine, a healthy diet, and no previous warning signs or history, Rachel’s doctor discovered a 10cm ovarian mass after a routine gynecologic exam. She was 24 years old. After surgery and the shocking

news that the mass was a malignant ovarian tumor, Rachel needed a word to help her get through the unknown lying ahead. “Rachel chose the word "HOPE," a word family and friends still use today to remember her,” says her parents. “Rachel stayed strong through 14 months of intense chemotherapy. Through the pain and complications, she never lost her giving heart, sense of humor, contagious energy, will to win, and beautiful smile.” Her story has inspired a 15-year tradition first started by her childhood best friend, who wanted to do something in Rachel's memory. After hearing about the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) annual Teal Trot 5K, the Abers joined with family and friends to create Team Rachel's HOPE in September 2009. The group, including Rachel's brother Derek Aber, along with his wife Crystal and three children Ansley, Noah, and Hudson, walk each September in her memory for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. “We can’t say enough about the positive impact Team Rachel’s HOPE makes in the community,” says Doug Barron, executive director of GOCA. “Over the years, the group has raised more than $250,000 in donations to help with ovarian cancer awareness, education, and patient outreach efforts throughout the state. Rachel’s story is a constant source of inspiration, and we’re so grateful to partner with the Abers in her honor.”

Awareness is especially important with ovarian cancer because many of the symptoms are silent and no single screening test exists to identify it at the earlier stages when diagnosis and treatment are critical. “Rachel wanted to be an inspiration and help women fighting this disease,” says the Abers. “We HOPE people hearing her story take note if they have any potential ovarian cancer symptoms and get checked out because early detection and treatment can save lives.” RachelsHOPE.net provides links to education and research on ovarian cancer. The mission of GOCA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is to increase awareness and educate Georgia’s women of all ages and their families, as well as the healthcare community about the risks and symptoms leading to early detection. As the holiday season descends upon the State of Georgia, there's a longstanding tradition that brings the many flavors of our state to the forefront of our holiday tables. "Georgia Grown" is not just a marketing catchphrase, it's a celebration of the state's rich agricultural heritage and our combined commitment to supporting local businesses. A delicious Riverview Farm crown roast of pork was served with carrot soufflé, green bean bundles wrapped with bacon and creamy grits with a ragú made from Ellijay mushrooms. And, to top off the holiday meal, a praline pecan cheesecake with caramel sauce. The Governor’s, Mansion holiday table was artfully decorated by Le Jardin Francais and included antique state silver candelabras, the official state china and a beautiful collection of seasonal flowers, magnolia branches, and rustic grape vines. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Fig Jelly Honey Variety of Cheeses Salami or meat of choice Olives (provide a variety)

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. Christmas Jubilee & Parade of Lights

MA I N ST R E E T Kick off the holiday season with the traditional Christmas Jubilee. The parade starts at 5:30 pm at Woodstock Elementary School at 230 Rope Mill Road and travels down Rope Mill Road to Main Street. There it heads south on Main Street and ends at Sam’s Club just before Highway 92. The parade is approximately 1.3 miles long.
